Ticketmaster & Live Nation Sued By Justice Department For Exploitative Monopoly

News broke earlier this year of a massive antitrust lawsuit from the Justice Department against Ticketmaster and, by extension, its parent company Live Nation. On Thursday (May 23), the governmental organization officially filed its suit against the entertainment conglomerates, accusing them of an illegal monopoly over live events in the U.S. that aggressively stifles competition and inflates fees and ticket prices. Moreover, authorities comprising 30 state and district attorneys general filed the lawsuit in Manhattan federal court. It aims to dismantle the alleged monopoly for the benefit of artists and promoters suffering at its hands.

“We allege that Live Nation relies on unlawful, anticompetitive conduct to exercise its monopolistic control over the live events industry in the United States at the cost of fans, artists, smaller promoters, and venue operators,” a statement from Attorney General Merrick Garland read. “The result is that fans pay more in fees, artists have fewer opportunities to play concerts, smaller promoters get squeezed out, and venues have fewer real choices for ticketing services. It is time to break up Live Nation-Ticketmaster.” This is not the only legal move that Live Nation is reckoning with right now, considering other debacles like the Astroworld tragedy.

The Justice Department Sues Live Nation & Ticketmaster

Nevertheless, the Justice Department pointed to long-term venue contracts, blocking venues from using other sellers, and threatening venues to use their service as ways in which Ticketmaster unrightfully exerted or held their power over live U.S. events. Live Nation has continually denied any violations of antitrust laws. They cited “the large gap that exists between the quality of the Ticketmaster system and the next best primary ticketing system” as the explanation for its dominance in the market back when federal investigations bubbled up in 2022. However, the service’s competition claimed that they make market disruption impossible through, for example, threatening to withhold performers if venues don’t partner with Ticketmaster.

“Today’s action is a step forward in making this era of live music more accessible for the fans, the artists, and the industry that supports them,” Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco. This joins other antitrust initiatives amid the Biden administration, including lawsuits and legal action against Apple, Google, Amazon, and more. Ticketmaster accounts for 70% of major venue ticket sales in the U.S., according to a 2022 federal lawsuit data. In 2019, the Justice Department found Live Nation liable for violating an agreement to not retaliate against venues using other ticketing services, which was established when it merged with Ticketmaster in 2010.

Bronny has gone from an outside chance of being selected at all to being projected as a second-round pick. What a difference a week can make. Now, Bronny has just participated in his pro day at the Lakers facility, where scouts watched as he worked out. LeBron and Savanah James were in attendance and gave a special message to Bronny after the big day. 

On Wednesday, Bronny James participated in the Klutch Pro Day at the Los Angeles Lakers facility in front of NBA stars, league officials, and his father, LeBron James, the Lakers superstar. After the special day for the James family, Lebron sent out a special message to Bronny on Instagram. Lebron seems to really be taking in the process as a father, enjoying watching his son’s NBA journey. Overall, James is over the moon for the work his son is putting in.

LeBron James said of Bronny’s big day on Instagram, “Can’t even explain how @mrs_savannahrj & I were feeling today watching our boy continue on his journey! We’re all So so proud of you @bronny!” Bron posted a video of some major highlights of Bronny, such as seeing him drain shots from outside the arc, showing his physicality, and off-the-dribble pull-ups. The Lakers are still the most likely team to draft Bronny. Bronny is projected to be a late second-round pick, and the Lakers do possess a late second-round pick, so it might make sense. Unless another team tries to poach him to lure LeBron to their franchise.

Lebron is enjoying the process for Bronny. He recently praised his son’s mindset and maturity, which he has shown at the draft combine on his Mind The Game podcast with JJ Redick. Out of all the people who are commenting on the Diddy scandal, especially after the Cassie footage, there is one name who hasn’t been as outspoken as some folks may have assumed: Mase. The former Bad Boy artist has voiced his fair share of disagreements, critiques, and outright animosity with the label’s boss in the past over business and personal matters. Of course, it’s not like he particularly held back when it comes to this recent wave of abuse, sexual assault, and sex trafficking claims against Sean Combs. But the It Is What It Is cohost hasn’t said much about that new hotel video, and explained why on Tuesday (May 21) on his show.

“I’m saving my takes for the documentary. If y’all wondering how I feel, it’s coming soon, pause,” Mase said on It Is What It Is. Previoulsy, he had reacted to a lot of the Diddy developments with about the same level of shock, intrigue, and side-eye as everyone else. However, the Jacksonville native might have more particular things to say about this new footage in question, or just recently signed onto a long-form project on the Puff case. Either way, it’s a curious choice.

Mase Refrains From Speaking On Diddy & Cassie Footage

Meanwhile, Cassie recently shared an appreciative yet heavy message following the response to the footage of her and Diddy. “Thank you for all of the love and support from my family, friends, strangers and those I have yet to meet,” it started. “The outpouring of love has created a place for my younger self to settle and feel safe now, but this is only the beginning. Domestic Violence is THE issue. It broke me down to someone I never thought I would become. With a lot of hard work, I am better today, but I will always be recovering from my past.

Chaka Khan’s daughter, Indira Khan, posted on Instagram that she is “singing and dancing” while watching Diddy’s demise.

What caused this? According to her, Diddy screamed in the legend’s face, and when her son attempted to intervene, the mogul’s security jumped him.

In other news, Diddy is the subject of yet another lawsuit from a woman. According to TMZ, model Crystal McKinney met Diddy at Men’s Fashion Week in 2003 when she was 22.

According to McKinney, Diddy invited her to the studio, where she engaged in drinking and smoking weed, which she believes was laced with narcotics, leading to her being disorientated.

That moment was followed by being forced into a bathroom, where she was then forced to perform oral sex, eventually losing consciousness and waking up in a taxi.

McKinney stated she was subjected to a modeling industry blackball and attempted suicide in 2004.

McKinney says her suit was inspired by Cassie’s and the feeling of having “a moral obligation to speak up.”

Palm Springs' Displacement of Black and Brown Neighborhood Spurs Call for Justice

In the 1950s and 1960s, the City of Palm Springs orchestrated the demolition of a predominantly Black and Brown neighborhood, displacing over 1,000 residents. This historic injustice, involving the razing of homes in the Section 14 area, has come under renewed scrutiny as survivors and their supporters demand long overdue compensation.

The Section 14 Survivors have been working tirelessly to raise awareness about this little-known chapter of Palm Springs’ history. They are calling for recognition and reparations for the destruction of their homes and personal property. Their efforts have highlighted the emotional and financial toll the displacement had on the affected families.

Areva Martin, a Los Angeles civil rights attorney who represents the Survivors of Section 14, said to The New York Times, “These people who were upended, who watched their parents suffer, lose jobs, lose their home, people who suffered psychological trauma… We want Section 14 to be restored to this community’s memory.”

After months of intense negotiations in April, Palm Springs offered a settlement of approximately $4.3 million for up to 145 properties. However, this offer is only a fraction of the survivors’ proposed. Ms. Martin, a representative for the survivors, criticized the city’s proposal, stating it “relies on flawed data and improper analyses.” Survivors believe a more accurate assessment of their damages ranges from $187 to $366 million.

As negotiations continue, the survivors remain steadfast in their pursuit of a settlement that truly reflects the magnitude of their losses and the profound impact of their displacement.

Ralfy The Plug and Remble seem to be at odds right now. For those who may not know, Ralfy The Plug is the brother of Drakeo The Ruler. Overall, the two have had numerous collaborations in the past. Furthermore, with Drakeo’s passing, Ralfy has been quick to call out any disrespect against his brother. As for Remble, he has also collaborated with Drakeo, and it seems like he never really had many good things to say about Ralfy.

Earlier this week, Remble dropped off a “Not Like Us” freestyle that was over four minutes long. This was a comeback track for Remble who hadn’t dropped in quite some time. Immediately, it became clear that this song was addressing a few people, with both Ralfy and Drakeo mentioned by name. Not long after this song came out, Ralfy The Plug came through with a response of his own. You can listen to the track below, which is called “Jada Pinkett.”
