Earl Sweatshirt Will Perform His ‘Doris’ Album In Full For Its Upcoming Tenth Anniversary

Earl Sweatshirt most recently released Sick! at the top of 2022, an album that Joe Budden didn’t particularly like. But given its No. 80 debut on the Billboard 200, it looks like most everyone else did.

“Even though he’s grown up, though, there remains an element of inscrutability in his music, a chip on his shoulder that has been reduced in size but is no less embedded in the fabric of his being,” Uproxx‘s Aaron Williams wrote in his Sick! review, later noting, “You won’t be hearing many requests for Earl’s new music at any clubs or parties anytime soon (none you’d want to go to, anyway). But what feels more important is that Earl is in a good place, mentally and emotionally, and that’s translated to art that is proportionately more enjoyable.”

You can hear Earl’s music at The Novo in Los Angeles soon enough, however. He announced on Wednesday, June 28, that he will be performing a one-off 10-year anniversary show at the venue on August 19 to commemorate the August 20, 2013 release of Doris.

“He’ll perform Doris in full for the first time ever,” Stereogum relayed. “Domo Genesis is also on the bill, and it would not be a surprise if some of the album’s other featured guests made appearances as well.”

Doris‘ other featured artists were Casey Veggies, Frank Ocean, the late Mac Miller, RZA, SK Laflare, Tyler The Creator, and Vince Staples.

DC The Don: A Rising Force In Emo Rap

With a new fleet of rappers bursting on the scene, it’s no easy feat selecting those that stand out. However, one listen to DC the Don, and it’s clear why the young rapper has blown up. With a unique blend of Hip Hop and rock music, he’s very much in a league of his own. Day after day, the fast rising star welcomes in a hoard of new fans.

Through an unconventional and dynamic rap style, DC the Don has carved out a specially designed path. A multitalented star, he’s also garnered much attention for his basketball playing skills. The six foot seven rapper has been active musically since 2017, but he shot to higher fame in 2020. DC the Don further made headlines after nabbing a spot on XXL’s coveted Freshman list for the Class of 2023 set. His third album, FUNERAL, showed a simultaneously more vulnerable and versatile side to the rapper.

Early Days

Born Daijon Cotty Davis, DC the Don knew for a long time that his life would go either one out of two ways.  The “Worst Day” rapper was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on August 3, 1999. Growing up, he was interested in music and basketball, with a promising career in either of the two ventures. As a teenager, he moved from Milwaukee to Long Beach, California, to wax his basketball skills.

He eventually met and played basketball with the Ball Brothers under the Amateur Athletic Union. He forged a strong friendship with the basketball trio, and they have reportedly remained close. Sometime in 2017, Lonzo Ball’s Big Baller Brand shoe, the ZO2, was released. In the announcement video, DC the Don’s “Everything 1K” was the accompanying track. This opened the door to the rapper accessing the mainstream market. After the rise to fame, he continued to make more music.

DC The Don’s Breakthrough

By the 2020s, DC the Don had begun to reap the fruits of his labor. Between 2017 and 2019, he released five EPs and two mixtapes, which gained buzz in the underground space. He signed to Rostrum Records, known for their roster of alternative Hip Hop stars, in 2020. He released his debut album, Come as You Are, in the same year.

In 2022, his sophomore album My Own Worst Enemy was released to critical praise. The album showcased a great progression in the artist’s writing, offering a more mature sound. On My Own Worst Enemy, DC famously battled his alter ego, which made for a rap-rage fest. His third album, FUNERAL, was released on May 5, 2023. He further explained that the title of the project signified a brand new version of himself.

“A lot of sh*t in my life has been changing…From a personal standpoint, it’s a ‘FUNERAL’ and death to a lot of things that could be better [for me] moving forward,” he said. “From a music standpoint, it’s like a death of everything that came before – and I’m not saying f**k all my other music because it’s what led up to this – but it’s kind of like a whole new chapter instead of just turning the page.”

After leaving a basketball career for music, DC the Don is showing his decision was no fluke. With tracks like “12AM” and “Hate Being Lonely” on his latest project, switching lanes is clearly no difficult task for him. Infusing even more genres to his previously identifiable sound has also kept his music fresh. After being put in a box musically, he has quickly ended all doubts. Through his knack for experimentation, DC the Don creates a genre bending cascade of emotions.

Erica Banks Claims 1501 Owes Her Money In New Snippet

Erica Banks is the next in a long line of artists to take issue with her label. A new unreleased snippet of her music emerged where she called out the label. “And they owe me some money, they greedy,” the song’s lyrics read. She followed up the snippet by saying that she is no longer with the record label. Each of her 3 most recent projects were released on 1501 Certified including her breakout 2020 mixtape Erica Banks. Her debut studio album 2022’s Diary Of The Flow Queen was also released on the label, but it could be her last.

In the comments under the post, many pointed out Megan Thee Stallion’s similar issues with 1501 certified. “Meg tried to tell it but she was so pressed to be the new head female of that label she ignored it..well a lesson learned,” one comment read. “Megan Pete baby add this to your court docket and y’all team up to take his a*s straight to the bank because everybody need to see this label for what it really is and you can tell they have absolutely no respect for women!!” another comment says.

Erica Banks Takes Shots At Her Label

Erica Banks recently received some praise from high places when Ice Spice gave her her flowers. In response to the praise Banks’ called Ice Spice “everything.” The interaction started when it was announced that Banks’ would be joining Love & Hip-Hop Atlanta.

The biggest story of the year so far for Erica Banks has been her ongoing beef with recent XXL freshman Finesse2Tymes. After the pair had a short-lived relationship they started a beef. The conflict saw the pair exchanging increasingly NSFW shots back and forth publicly. While the beef ultimately didn’t lead to anything particularly dramatic Banks seems to have had no problem moving on. She was recently on Twitter flirting with fellow rapper Sukihana. What do you think of Erica Banks calling out her label? Let us know in the comment section below.

Nicki Minaj’s Husband Dropped Lawsuit Against NY DCJS, Remains On Sex Offender Registry

Nicki Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty, dropped a lawsuit against the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services earlier this year, according to reports. He reportedly filed a lawsuit against the NY DCJS in 2021, claiming that he wasn’t notified about a 2004 hearing that would have allowed him to contest his sex offender status. The government fired back, providing a transcript of the hearing, which Petty was present at.

“[Kenneth Petty] was present at the SORA hearing and represented by counsel, who stated that [Petty] did not object to his designation as a level 2 sex offender – the Court need not even reach this issue,” they claimed. “[Petty] acknowledged his identity on the record, and his counsel stated that [Petty] did not contest his designation as a level 2 sex offender.” Petty’s team told New York Daily News they “were just going according to his statement.” “He still says that he wasn’t there and maybe someone is putting this together just to get him,” they continued. “I don’t think that he purposely lied to us. I just believe maybe he forgot.”

Petty was convicted of first-degree attempted rape of a minor in 1995. He served four years in prison for the offense. The alleged victim, Jennifer Hough, came forward again in 2021, alleging that Petty and Minaj had tried to “intimidate” her into recanting her claims. Hough accused the couple of offering her $500,000 to go back on the rape allegations. She dropped the lawsuit in January of 2022, according to PEOPLE.

Earlier this month, a petition thought to be started by neighbors of the couple began to circulate. The petition highlighted Petty’s sex offender status, further calling for the couple to removed from their neighborhood of Hidden Hills. Last week, it was reported that the petition was allegedly started by a Cardi B superfan. The fan allegedly created it in an attempt to Hurt Minaj’s assets. The account had referenced a mission to “end” Minaj “from the inside out.”
