Midwxst & DC The Don Reunite For Reflective Single “FIRE”

If we had to name artists that impressed us thoroughly in 2023, it would be a pretty long list. One of them we would have to include would be midwxst. He is not necessarily a new kid on the block, but he definitely snuck up on us. Last year, the Indiana multi-hyphenate went and dropped his debut album E3 and it saw him operate in the lanes of hyper pop, R&B, hip-hop, and etc. He really went for it all and it paid off. Fairly soon, he will be following that up with another project sometime this year and to promote it, midwxst is back with a new single “FIRE.”

This is not the first track that is rumored to be on BACK IN ACTION 4.0. In late February, midwxst dropped “mistakes” with 9lives, which was a cut about toxic relationships. Similarly, “FIRE” explores those themes, but also sees him reflect on how he has been struggling to feel happy with himself. He is also having a hard time admitting his faults, especially when he says, “I’ve had problems since I was a youngin’ / Need to cut out the lies and the frontin’.”

Like “mistakes,” midwxst has decided to tap a guest. This time fellow emo rapper and singer DC The Don is joining him. These two have a solid work history together, featuring on a couple of songs for each other. While their voices do sound similar back to back, DC does pen a solid verse. “My ex-b**** just wanna be famous / ‘Cause she a crash-out, hit ninety while she lane switch / Afraid to die, but she don’t wanna die nameless (Ooh).”

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single “FIRE” by midwxst and DC The Don? Is this the best track from either rapper as of late, why or why not? Does this get you excited for midwxst’s upcoming project BACK IN ACTION 4.0? Is this their best collaboration after hearing this? Quotable Lyrics:

You know what they say, “Play with fire, you get burned”
Come away with nothin’ from the lessons that I learn
I been runnin’ ’round in circles, I been stuck at every turn
If you don’t wan’ tell the truth, then you can happily be adjourned
Ruin everything I touch, sometimes, I feel like I’m a germ
I’m not good at listenin’, no, I don’t like to come to terms

DC The Don Releases Coveted Throwaways On New Mixtape “SACRED HEART 2 (+)”

A few days ago we compiled a list of five artists who we expect to really blow up in 2024. We went for names that were starting to garner some attention but have not reached the maximum potential just yet. After sitting with it for the past week or so, there might have been someone who should have made the cut. DC The Don, a Wisconsin native, was grossly underlooked.

He can sing and rap and floats around the trap and melodic rap subgenres. DC shares similarities with other artists in these lanes, but is developing a unique sound. Last year he impressed us with some singles such as “Tell Shyanne” and his deluxe version of FUNERAL. DC The Don is back now to deliver a sequel to his SACRED HEART mixtape series.

I know the mixing is s*** on some songs most of these are lost records from when my car was robbed & they took my hard drive/laptop. so I couldn’t mix these but I wanted you to have them.”

DC The Don Has A Late Night Jam With “Tell Shyanne”

The loyal fans are already aware that DC The Don has a unique style that not many others can mimic. He proves that once again on his brand new track “Tell Shyanne.” It brings immaculate vibes and a laid-back type of energy that is sure to be a song to cruise to late at night. Furthermore, when the track begins it feels like an early 2000s R&B jam that brings the same intention of singing your heart out when you are in the feels.

A really enjoyable theme in this single is when you finally make it in an ultra-competitive industry, like music. Moreover, rap is taking over the world as one of the most listened-to genres. DC The Don expresses that in the quotable lyrics section below. Now that he has found success, people that might not have been paying much attention now want to be a part of DC’s lavish lifestyle.

DC The Don: A Rising Force In Emo Rap

With a new fleet of rappers bursting on the scene, it’s no easy feat selecting those that stand out. However, one listen to DC the Don, and it’s clear why the young rapper has blown up. With a unique blend of Hip Hop and rock music, he’s very much in a league of his own. Day after day, the fast rising star welcomes in a hoard of new fans.

Through an unconventional and dynamic rap style, DC the Don has carved out a specially designed path. A multitalented star, he’s also garnered much attention for his basketball playing skills. The six foot seven rapper has been active musically since 2017, but he shot to higher fame in 2020. DC the Don further made headlines after nabbing a spot on XXL’s coveted Freshman list for the Class of 2023 set. His third album, FUNERAL, showed a simultaneously more vulnerable and versatile side to the rapper.

Early Days

Born Daijon Cotty Davis, DC the Don knew for a long time that his life would go either one out of two ways.  The “Worst Day” rapper was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on August 3, 1999. Growing up, he was interested in music and basketball, with a promising career in either of the two ventures. As a teenager, he moved from Milwaukee to Long Beach, California, to wax his basketball skills.

He eventually met and played basketball with the Ball Brothers under the Amateur Athletic Union. He forged a strong friendship with the basketball trio, and they have reportedly remained close. Sometime in 2017, Lonzo Ball’s Big Baller Brand shoe, the ZO2, was released. In the announcement video, DC the Don’s “Everything 1K” was the accompanying track. This opened the door to the rapper accessing the mainstream market. After the rise to fame, he continued to make more music.

DC The Don’s Breakthrough

By the 2020s, DC the Don had begun to reap the fruits of his labor. Between 2017 and 2019, he released five EPs and two mixtapes, which gained buzz in the underground space. He signed to Rostrum Records, known for their roster of alternative Hip Hop stars, in 2020. He released his debut album, Come as You Are, in the same year.

In 2022, his sophomore album My Own Worst Enemy was released to critical praise. The album showcased a great progression in the artist’s writing, offering a more mature sound. On My Own Worst Enemy, DC famously battled his alter ego, which made for a rap-rage fest. His third album, FUNERAL, was released on May 5, 2023. He further explained that the title of the project signified a brand new version of himself.

“A lot of sh*t in my life has been changing…From a personal standpoint, it’s a ‘FUNERAL’ and death to a lot of things that could be better [for me] moving forward,” he said. “From a music standpoint, it’s like a death of everything that came before – and I’m not saying f**k all my other music because it’s what led up to this – but it’s kind of like a whole new chapter instead of just turning the page.”

After leaving a basketball career for music, DC the Don is showing his decision was no fluke. With tracks like “12AM” and “Hate Being Lonely” on his latest project, switching lanes is clearly no difficult task for him. Infusing even more genres to his previously identifiable sound has also kept his music fresh. After being put in a box musically, he has quickly ended all doubts. Through his knack for experimentation, DC the Don creates a genre bending cascade of emotions.

DC The Don Continues His Drop Spree With New Album “Funeral”

If you are a fan of multiple sounds from one artist maybe you have heard of DC The Don. Perhaps his half-red half black hairstyle and 6″7 tall frames catch your eye. The Wisconsin rap artist has released a new album called Funeral. Earlier this year, he rereleased a project called Sacred Heart (+) to all platforms. This project was only exclusive to SoundCloud prior to its rerelease. In contrast, DC The Don delivers a brand new melodic project will all new songs. He initially teased the project’s release earlier this year with the single “Hate Being Lonely.” The single’s melodic feel is the perfect entry to his artistry. He also released a music video for the song.

DC The Don’s catchy approach carries on to Funeral. Although he is still emerging from the underground, his ability to experiment with different sounds catches fans in a whirlwind. His genre-bending style can be divided into the categories of Hip- Hop, Pop, and Rock. The second single from Funeral called “12AM” further depict’s his melodic approach. Additionally, the song is accompanied by a music video.

DC The Don’s Melodic New Album “Funeral”

DC demands the ears of listeners as his project contains 16 songs. Immediately, the album’s title track is listed as the first song. The album cover includes his head emerging from the soil. This seemingly symbolizes the funeral concept perfectly. Last Month, he uploaded a Tik Tok showing the creation hand. Despite its length, the album is only 44 minutes long. Each track blends into each other seamlessly. This project also has no features. DC stands alone with the delivery of this project. The 23-year-old ‘s underground following continues to push his name into virality as his videos have high numbers on Tik Tok.

DC has put out enough music this year for anyone to become acquainted with his artistry. Have you heard his latest album Funeral? Let us know what you think about the project in the comments down below.

Hooper Turned Rapper DC The Don Rates NBA Stars’ Rap Bars

The rapper-hooper comparison might be a cliche, but cliches are cliches for a reason. It remains as true as ever: Rappers all want to be ballers and ballers all want to rap. Now, more than ever, the crossover (heh) has gotten ridiculous, blurring the lines between the two as former high school hoop stars like NLE Choppa and Quavo pen Billboard hits, and rap’s upper echelon guys get pro hoops co-signs from LeBron James like Lil Durk, sign pro contracts like J. Cole, or host their own in-home rec leagues like Drake.

Intriguingly enough, as more NBA stars dip their toes into rap careers, following in the footsteps of Shaq, Kobe, and Allen Iverson, it’s a little rarer to see ball players get serious about their rhymes. Of course, there’s Damian Lillard, who’s three albums deep into his career as Dame D.O.L.L.A., but for the most part, the current generation of NBA talent has yet to commit. Maybe they just need a little encouragement, and that’s where Milwaukee native/LA transplant DC The Don steps in.

The 6’7 rising rap star is best known for viral tracks like “Worst Day” and “Walk Thru,” but he’s probably just as well-known for his first song “Everything 1K” appearing in Big Baller Brand’s first sneaker commercial. That’s because he was a former Chino Hills High teammate of Lonzo Ball — another aspiring rhyme purveyor currently playing in the NBA — and his brothers LiAngelo and LaMelo. Obviously, DC went the other way, and so he’s willing to lend some of his expertise to rating NBA stars’ rap bars. Check out the video above.

DC The Don Performs His Chaotic Single ‘Enemies’ For ‘UPROXX Sessions’

Milwaukee rapper DC The Don looks more like a basketball player than a rising music star. That’s due to his height — he’s 6’7″ — as well as the fact that he actually did play AAU hoops alongside a few future NBA stars in Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo Ball. However, he chose rap over ball, combining punk and pop sensibilities to create a unique, chaotic style that has been garnering attention since 2017. His career’s truly taken off in the past few years thanks to a recording contract with Rostrum Records and viral hits like 2020’s “Worst Day.”

Performing his new song “Enemies” from his February album My Own Worst Enemy, DC brings all that chaotic energy to the UPROXX Sessions stage. Don’t let his laconic demeanor fool you; this song is designed to make crowds go crazy at a festival near you.
