Cardi B’s Friend Star Brim Sentenced In RICO Case

Star Brim was previously arrested on RICO charges for allegedly strong involvement in gang activity, and Cardi B’s best friend just received her sentence for it. Moreover, she will serve one year and one day in prison, which will precede three years of supervised release. For those unaware, Brim pled guilty to criminal acts committed by the 5-9 Brims gang, an offshoot of the Bloods. Through the RICO Act, authorities charged her and 17 other individuals and alleged that she was deeply involved in most matters relating to the organization. For example, prosecutors called her the “Godmother” of the group that orchestrated various crimes such as fraud, assault, and much more.

Furthermore, the 5-9 Brims became a target for many law enforcement authorities in New York attempting to squash out gang-related crimes in the area. Cardi B’s colleague will not specifically undergo house arrest again, from what reports indicate. But Judge George B. Daniels did name a few ways in which Star Brim will not be able to return to her violent past or further gang-related plots. Strict orders will surface to not associate with the Bloods or any of its subdivisions, both in the online sense and in the physical sense by avoiding known Blood areas.

In addition, the conditions behind Star Brim’s release indicate that she must fulfill an outpatient mental health treatment program and comply with routine drug testing. She must also pay a special assessment of $100 immediately in addition to her sentence and release terms. Regardless, Judge Daniels suggested Brim complete her sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, and that her schedule of surrender will be before 2PM on July 1 of this year. It’s unclear whether she will maintain communication with the likes of Cardi B.

Meanwhile, this is not the only legal battle that Brim has been a part of over the past few years. Authorities also charged her over an alleged beat-down at a strip club a couple of years ago. We’ll see if this is the true end of the line for Star Brim’s involvement with the 5-9. For more news on her and the latest updates on Cardi B, come back to HNHH.

Today In Hip Hop History: Former Bad Boy Artist Craig Mack Passed Away 16 Years Ago

tumblr poa0rsEMns1t1yehoo1 640

In 2008, Craig Mack, whose 1994 hit single “Flava In Ya Ear” thrilled the era of 90’s hip-hop, died from heart failure near his home in Walterboro, South Carolina. He was 47 years old.

Produced by Easy Mo Bee, “Flava In Ya Ear” audibly captured the exactitude of one of hip-hop’s most celebrated eras. In the early 90’s, a time east coast rap was faint in hype, the coming of Craig Mack sparked its resurgence. The remix of “Flava In Ya Ear” featuring Puff Daddy (Diddy), LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, and Rampage pushed one of the most iconic rappers to the forefront, The Notorious B.I.G, creating a timeless hip-hop melody.

Mack was signed to Diddy’s Bad Boy Entertainment when he dropped his 1994 debut Project: Funk da World, making him a Bad Boy Records pioneer. He is the first artist to release an album off of Bad Boy records, which would become the mecca for east coast rap of the 1990s, and its resurgence.

The distinctive rhymes and flows of Craig Mack are essential to the rutty and sensationally groggy sound of 1990s rap. Prior to his dawning with Bad Boy, as a young teen under the moniker MC EZ, he released one single “Just Rhymin’” in 1988, followed by “Get Retarded” with his group MC EZ & Troup.

Native to Long Island, which at the time was one of New York’s maturing hip-hop epicenters, Mack was close friends with Parrish Smith and Erick Sermon of EPMD prior to the golden era duo’s debut, and eventually went on tour with them. He helped DJ Scratch, EPMD’s DJ, amass his turntables for performances.

DJ Scratch revealed how Mack disclosed the making of his documentary a couple of years ago, The Roots’ Questlove describes “Flava In Ya Ear” as “one of the greatest hip hop single debuts in the culture,” while Foxy Brown recalls Mack’s sincerity, “Your grace and humility spoke volumes…,” and Diddy declares the late icon as “very important to the Bad Boy legacy.”

Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign Showcase Violent Imagery In CGI Music Video For “CARNIVAL”

Since VULTURES 1 by Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign was beginning to be rolled out, we have received four sets of visuals. The first of which was revealed to us on Instagram for “TALKING” featuring Ye’s oldest child, North West. Following that, two versions of “VULTURES,” “Havoc Version” and “Juice Version,” got unique imagery. Now, after going number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, “CARNIVAL” gets the music video treatment.

Of course, this cut features Playboi Carti and Rich The Kid, and they have helped turn this record into a fan favorite. Its wild chanting backup vocalists paired with the EDM/trap beat is certainly a unique mix of textures and sonics. But it has won fans over in a hurry, being out for just over a month now. Additionally, like most things Kanye does, this video is anything but orthodox.

It takes the single cover art and turns it into a scroller-esque set of violent and raging CGI imagery. You will catch a shot of the artwork for “CARNIVAL” near the 20 second mark. Clearly a lot of time and energy was put into this as all of the shots really emulate the vibe of the cut. The song has been an utter success for Kanye, making it his fifth number one track and his first in about 13 years. Additionally, Ty Dolla $ign can say this is number two, while Carti and Rich nabbed their first.
