Uproxx Music 20: Bairi Emerged From The Darkness As A ‘Fire Siren’ To Reckon With

Bairi Uproxx Music 20
Zammarroo/Merle Cooper

Bairi (pronounced bye-ree) makes the kind of music that forces you to sit still and absorb everything that comes out of it. It’s captivating in the best ways and heightens the senses all before seizing them for the duration needed. It’s a conclusion I came to one of the first times I heard the Pennsylvania-born singer back in 2021 with her “Paraíso” single. With an enchanting violin and scintillating piano keys as the background for the captivating record, Bairi takes command with vocals that are both dominating and alluring, a perfect recipe to draw you into a front-row seat for her show.

If “Paraíso” lies on one end of the spectrum for Bairi artistry, her latest single “Come My Way” is on the other end. Where “Paraíso” is sweet and soothing, “Come My Way” seeks refuge on the dancefloor. The upbeat number is filled to the brim with sensuality and anticipation as the fulfillment her body craves is within reach. Both songs are expected to appear on Bairi’s upcoming debut EP Fire Siren which is due April 22.

“This project represents the darkness and events leading up to my finally committing to my purpose (music) and really deciding to love myself; or at least it set me on the path of learning how to,” Bairi tells Uproxx. “It was a very dark and confusing time during which all I knew was pain and distraction — until the suffering of my choices opened my eyes to the truth of who I really am. I hope that by the end of the project, the listener understands that while it heavily touches on toxic themes, it is not a story about the conscious decision to be toxic; rather, it’s about breaking the matrix that kept me in those toxic cycles.”

Together with the arrival of “Come My Way” and the announcement of Fire Siren, Uproxx placed the spotlight on Bairi for an Uproxx Music 20 conversation that dives into her inspiration, interests, and the unique moments that make Bairi the artist she is today.

What is your earliest memory of music?

I’m overwhelmed thinking about all of the backseat revelations in my parents’ cars when hearing a song for the first time (i.e., my first time hearing “The Thong Song” in the McDonald’s drive-through or dramatically staring out of the window while Mike Shinoda’s remix of “Crawlin” by Linkin Park made me fall in love with orchestral arrangements). Still, the two memories that stand out to me the most are when I heard “When You Believe” by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston in the credits of my favorite movie Prince Of Egypt, and when I heard “Journey to the Past” by Aaliyah in the credits of Anastasia. There’s something about being completely enamored with a movie and then hearing your favorite singers drive it home. It’s the same reason I almost cried hearing Jhené Aiko in the credits of Creed. It’s probably the reason I’m very dynamic in my compositions.

Who inspired you to take music seriously?

My grade school choir director, Mr. Joseph Farrell, really helped me believe in the power of my voice and the importance of being hard-working and disciplined to nurture my gift, even though it was just recently all of those lessons hit me. When it came to actually pursuing music as a career though, the first person that shifted my perspective into becoming an artist was my friend Dave Langston. When I first got to New York in 2015, I was majoring in English literature when I met him in a Psych class. One day we sat in my car as he played me his music and when I told him I sang he very seriously told me I needed to pursue it. He got me in a studio doing vocals for him and then eventually it was in that studio I recorded my first EP that released in 2016. Will always be soooo grateful for him.

Do you know how to play an instrument? If so, which one? If not, which instrument do you want to learn how to play?

When I was a kid, my grandmother gave me a Casio and I taught myself how to play a lot of the music in the video games I was playing (Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 8, 9, X, X-2). I took a few piano lessons, but got really nervous and never finished. I do plan on mastering the piano one day to honor my inner child.

What was your first job?

I worked at Chocolate World in Hershey at 15 years old as a food service worker at this little dessert creation studio.

What is your most prized possession?

My bear Dodi that my dad got me I wanna say around 2003 before he got deployed. Everyone makes fun of him, but that’s really my rider!

What is your biggest fear?

I read this question and got a little nervous to answer it. I think it changes based on the season in my life. Right now, I have an irrational fear that my dreams of being a superstar and performing on all of the stages I’ve dreamt of aren’t going to happen. Anybody can tell you I love singing and my career more than anything else. But with that being said, fear is just a lack of faith. I’m being shown that I need to let go and just let it all happen to me versus trying to do too much and control everything. Whoever is reading this, you can too. Don’t be scared of the unknown. Don’t be scared to be the biggest version of yourself.

Who is on your R&B/rap/afrobeats Mt. Rushmore?

Beyoncé, Aaliyah, Usher, and Justin Timberlake.

You get 24 hours to yourself to do anything you want, with unlimited resources: What are you doing? And spare no details!

I would hire someone to organize my business/administration/finances, hire a tour manager to set up a tour for my project, pay everyone I’m working with now the money they deserve, fly my team, family, and all of my favorite creatives to Camp Bairi: a remote location by the beach to finish up my project and do all visuals, production of all of my merch ideas, create and finish music, feed them amazing food, have intimate convos, etc. I know that sounds like a lot for 24 hours but generally, a perfect day for me involves loving on my loved ones, journaling, making music, dancing, performing, eating sushi, sharing my art with others, improving however I can, and creating stability and inspiration for myself and everyone around me.

What are your three most used emojis?

❤️‍🔥 (my preferred heart emoji cause I’m fiery), 🥹 (when I’m feeling sentimental, which is VERY often *laughs*), and 😭 (because I be crying laughing)

What’s a feature you need to secure before you die?

6lack!! I have actually had one for him in the tuck for years, I’m just waiting for the right time. In addition, I NEED to work with Ludwig Göransson on a movie soundtrack.

If you could appear in a future season of a current TV show, which one would it be and why?

Hot Ones, anything that Issa Rae does, Abbott Elementary (I’m from Pennsylvania, Quinta!), Dave, Grammys, Oscars, Tonys, Emmys, People’s Choice Awards (hope these count). There are soooo many podcasts I want to be on too. I love chatting.

Which celebrity do you admire or respect for their personality and why?

Beyoncé. She’s incredibly hardworking and courageous and advocates for herself and her ideas. A very clear example of purpose and alchemy.

Share your opinion on something no one could ever change your mind about.

This is sooo random, but I’m completely convinced that Kanye West’s “Say You Will” production is inspired by Kingdom Hearts’ “Dive Into The Heart”. There’s absolutely nooo evidence to prove this, like none at all, but I don’t care *laughs*. Listen to both and tell me I’m lying (and I won’t care).

What is the best song you’ve ever heard in your life and what do you love about it?

Again, “When You Believe” by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Two of the best voices in music, a choir, incredibly profound production and message, and the fact that it will make me cry no matter what I’m doing when I hear it. I’m listening to it right now to test the theory and it’s not failing *laughs*. There are a lot of perfect songs to me, but this is always the first one that comes to me.

What’s your favorite city in the world to perform, and what’s a city you’re excited to perform in for the first time?

It’s a toss-up between New York and Atlanta for my favorite city to perform in. Two of my favorite, most lit performances were in either and the energy was unmatched. I’m excited to perform in a church in Italy. When I was in 11th grade I passed up the opportunity to do this because a lot was going on in my home life and I was just so scared and lacking confidence that I couldn’t show up how I needed to. I can’t wait to redeem this moment for myself.

You are throwing a music festival. Give us the dream lineup of 5 artists that will perform with you and the location where it would be held.

I tried to realistically and tastefully answer this question at first, but truthfully, what I really want is Doja Cat, Billie Eilish, RAYE, Chloe x Halle, Doechii, and myself. I think all of us are extremely dynamic, cinematic, and immersive, with some similarities but different enough for it to feel like a full spectrum of music. I’m the opener I don’t even care *laughs*. Either Madison Square Garden, which is one of my lifetime goals, or somewhere that feels like a wonder of the world, like an oasis in the desert or hot springs in the mountains. I know this all sounds ridiculous; I’m tired of trying to make sense of everything *laughs*.

What would you be doing now if it weren’t for music?

A counselor/therapist or teacher of writing/music, most likely counseling. At some point, after I get into a comfortable position within my music career, I want to get a counseling certificate and extend my services to creatives already in the space and young kids as well.

If you could see five years into the future or go five years into the past, which one would you pick and why?

I’m struggling with this question! I know we aren’t supposed to have regrets, but there’s definitely sooooo much wisdom I would share with myself 5 years ago that would save me from a lot of unnecessary suffering. While a vision of the future would be amazing, I can’t promise that I wouldn’t hold onto that vision too tightly and let it get in the way of my present. I have to plead the fifth here. I’m grateful to be able to reflect on my past and have a good enough relationship with God to get insight into the future and have enough faith to see it through even when it’s dark.

What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?

Seek respect for who you are instead of love for who you’re not. You are naturally kind and a natural light, you don’t need to prove yourself or lessen yourself for the right people. You belong without trying.

It’s 2050. The world hasn’t ended, and people are still listening to your music. How would you like it to be remembered?

I would like my music to be remembered as an experience, as a key to unlocking revelation within people’s spirits, something that gave language in the natural to the truth within, whether good or bad. I’m not perfect, and I hope that the honesty and journey that I take throughout my music/career/life teach a lot of lessons on how to know and heal oneself.

Fire Siren is out 4/22. Stay tuned for more information.

Will Madvillainy 2 Ever Come Out?

Few albums have achieved the cult status and enigmatic allure of Madvillainy. Likewise, not many albums are as anticipated as the long-awaited follow-up album, Madvillainy 2. The brainchild of Madlib and the late MF DOOM, the first album is a collaborative masterpiece that defied convention and continues to inspire. It’s no surprise fans have patiently waited, hoping and praying for Madvillainy 2 to drop. However, so far, the sequel album has eluded listeners even though its creators have said it exists.

Madvillainy turns 20 on March 18th, 2024, so evidently, fans have been waiting quite a while for Madvillainy 2. Following the unfortunate passing of MF DOOM in 2020, however, the optimism is slowly waning. Since Doom’s death, more and more fans have been left wondering if the album will ever be released. While some have completely lost hope, there is still a slight chance that listeners will get to experience Madvillainy 2 sometime in the future. Here are the updates the duo has given us about the album over the years.

2009: Exciting News Of A Sequel

On March 24, 2004, the supergroup Madvillain released their critically acclaimed debut album Madvillainy. It remains their sole album and it is widely regarded as a classic in Hip Hop circles. Fans have clamored for a continuation of the musical gem, and for a while, they were met with silence. However, in 2009, they finally received some very exciting news about Madvillainy 2. Stones Throw, the label that released Madvillainy, announced that the duo would reunite on the sequel album. Although no timeline for release was given, this news was enough to keep fans going.

2011: MF DOOM’s Interview With The Red Bull Music Academy

Subsequently, in late 2011, fans got another update about the possible release of Madvillainy 2. During an interview with the Red Bull Music Academy in November 2011, MF DOOM spilled the tea. The rapper shared that he and Madlib had been working on the album for a while and that it has been nearly done for about two years. Although he didn’t give a specific date for the album’s release, he did say that it should be out “soon.” According to DOOM, he wasn’t done with his part on the album, at the time. However, he disclosed that he would probably finish his part on Madvillainy 2 sometime in January 2012.

2012: MF DOOM Spills On BBC Radio 1

January 2012 went by, and fans hoped that meant that DOOM had finished with his part on Madvillainy 2. Many diehard fans who had seen the Red Bull interview were confident that a release date would finally be announced sometime soon. However, that was unfortunately not the case. After hearing nothing from Madvillain, fans finally got the next update about Madvillainy 2 in September 2012. During an appearance on Benji B’s late-night BBC Radio 1 show, which he co-hosted, DOOM shared that he only had to “touch up a couple of tracks” on the album. The rapper then said that there was still a possibility that the album would drop in late 2012. According to him, it depended on when Madvillain’s label, Stones Throw, would choose to release the project.

2014: Madlib’s Interview With Dazed

On January 9, 2014, Dazed published their interview with Madlib. Among the many things the DJ and producer spoke about, Madvillainy 2 was arguably the most exciting for fans. However, the news he shared about the album was not exactly what fans had hoped they would hear. When Madlib was asked about the album, he admitted that it was yet to be completed.

“I’m not forcing him to do it. He doesn’t even have to do it,” Madlib said referring to DOOM. “I just want to know where we are at with it because we recorded like, 10, 13 songs, but out of those we probably only used 4, so I want to see how the recordings are going. It’s not close to finished because it has to be a continuation of the last one. It doesn’t have to be better or worse but it has to be a continuation,” he added.

2021: Peanut Butter Wolf Spills The Beans

Apparently, the album was 85% done, according to Stones Throw Records founder, Peanut Butter Wolf. In a 2021 interview with Pete Rosenberg and Cipha Sounds on the Juan Ep Is Dead podcast, Wolf explained that DOOM submitted 11 songs for Madvillainy 2, though he wanted to add a few more records. “DOOM was always telling me ‘It’s 85% done, it’s 85% done.’ That was the magic number,” Wolf said, though he eventually began growing impatient. “I got a little frustrated, and I was just like, you know, ‘It’s gonna happen when it’s gonna happen.’ I don’t wanna be the guy to force creativity or anything.” However, he admitted that he wasn’t sure if those songs would ever see the light of day.

2023: Madlib’s Appearance On Hot 97

In March 2023, Madlib made an appearance on Hot 97 with Talib Kweli to promote their joint album, Liberation 2. While the aforementioned project was the primary reason for the interview, Madlib did give fans a new update on Madvillainy 2. This was several years after DOOM’s passing, and many fans had lost hope that the project would be released. However, Madlib successfully revived the excitement in the hearts of some fans.

“It’s more like a demo to me because we didn’t piece it together or anything and some of them it sounds like he just did one take and that’s it. [But] I’m gonna finish it. I gotta change a lot of the beats because some of the beats were used also,” he said. While there still is no release timeline or specific date, that’s a very clear confirmation from Madlib that Madvillainy 2 is still on the way. It may arrive later than we’d hoped it would, but according to Madlib, the album will come out sometime.

Lions Release Cornerback Wanted By Police

The Detroit Lions have released cornerback Cameron Sutton, who is the subject of an active police search in Florida. An arrest warrant was issued for Sutton on March 7. He is wanted on a charge of domestic battery by strangulation, which carries a five-year prison sentence. However, police have been unable to locate Sutton, nor contact his attorney. Sutton fled the scene of the alleged battery, a house in Lutz, on the morning of March 7. Furthermore, a police source told ESPN that there was “evidence of wounds” on the alleged victim’s body.

Sutton joined the Lions as a free agent in 2023 after six years with the Steelers. Furthermore, he started all 17 regular-season games for the Lions last season, registering 60 tackles. Additionally, Sutton played his college ball at Tennessee before being drafted in the third round in 2017. Carlton Davis III and Emmanuel Moseley are currently listed as the Lions’ starting cornerbacks. This remains a developing story at the time of writing.

I promise you I WILL get us to the super bowl!!! 😄,” Eminem wrote on X.

For the second year in a row, Johnson was widely considered one of the hottest head coaching prospects in the NFL. However, despite being a leading candidate for the vacancies in both Seattle and Washington, Johnson once again chose to remain part of Dan Campbell’s staff at Ford Field. Furthermore, per ESPN, several teams were reportedly put off by Johnson’s asking price. As a result, Johnson will return to the team with the third-most per-game yardage and fifth-highest-scoring offense in the league this season.

Ray J Reacts To Princess Love & John Boyega Dating Rumors, Apologizes To Monica

It’s been an undoubtedly busy few weeks for Ray J, and it doesn’t look like the performer’s life will be getting any less hectic anytime soon. Last month, for one, it was revealed that Princess Love filed for a divorce. In a joint statement, the former couple suggested the split was a mutual but “difficult” decision. Fortunately for Princess Love, however, it doesn’t look like she’ll be single for long. Recently, she was spotted out and about with actor John Boyega, and their body language left fans speculating that they’re an item.

While one might expect Ray J to feel some type of way about Princess Love’s alleged new man, he seems to be nothing but supportive. During a recent appearance on Way Up With Angela Yee, he reacted to the dating rumors, appearing fond of his ex’s possible next partner. “Oh that’s cool. I like him,” he said. “You don’t want to be with that dude. He seems like a good dude.”

He made it clear that he didn’t mean any harm by his tour suggestion and instead was simply trying to give them an idea.

“Monica, if I said anything wrong I apologize,” he said. “You are a great artist, you and Brandy have made history together, and all I want to do is just kind of like shake it up a little bit to get y’all to see that.” What do you think of Ray J’s response to rumors that Princess Love is dating John Boyega? On March 17th  and 18th, Investigation Discovery released the long-awaited documentary, Quiet On Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, which exposes the once-secret conducts of Dan Schneider, creator and producer at Nickelodeon. Schneider’s name is slapped across many ultra-successful kids TV shows, including  Zoey 101, All That, and The Amanda Show. He is also responsible for bringing many child actors into the limelight, some of whom remain celebrities to this day. However, beneath the surface of laughter, Schneider was an alleged terror. He was also reportedly behind several heinous crimes, which have long since remained rumors. Now, with the documentary out to the world, here are some of the inappropriate, disgusting things that took place in Schneider’s studio as a result of his actions and inactions. While Schneider has denied the allegations, the people are not buying it one bit.

Sexism And Discrimination

According to Quiet On Set, Dan Schneider went well out of his way to torture the women who worked with him, both young and old. Katrina Johnson, the original child actress from All That, worked with him from age 10 to 16. Soon after, all his attention and mentorship were suddenly directed toward the younger Amanda Bynes. Despite just reaching puberty and feeling very self-conscious, Johnson was repeatedly made to wear leotards on set. Worse yet, she was phased out of Nickelodeon once she hit puberty and gained weight. During her interview, she recalled a phone call to her parents where the producers allegedly told them, “She can’t be the fat one. We already have a fat one.”

Another round of allegations came from two female writers who worked with Dan Schneider on The Amanda Show. Christy Stratton and Jenny Kilgen shared one salary and subjected them to sexist remarks. They alleged he made comments like “women can’t be funny,” or referred to them as “the girls.” Stratton was asked to leave the show after an incident where Schneider ordered her to tell a childhood story while she mimed being sodomized, as the entire room watched. Meanwhile, Kilgen left after he asked her in a room full of her male writer colleagues if she had ever worked as a phone sex worker. Moreover, she worked a 16-week contract for a 27-week show. She worked without a salary for 11 weeks. Kilgen would later sue the company for discrimination, and settle out of court.

Racism

The producer was also remarkably racist with his show ideas. Former child actor Leon Frierson, who was on two seasons of All That recalled the time he was embarrassed by Schneider’s sudden request to take on the role of “Nose Boy,” a character that had Frierson, a Black actor, wearing an enlarged prosthetic nose. The costume also featured black “nose” shoulder pads. Frierson did not speak on how racist the costume was but he did touch on how inappropriately sexual it was. He also spoke about how the costume was immediately recognizable as a giant black penis and testicles. True to Frierson’s claims, “Nose Boy” was a character who liked to sneeze a clear white snot-like substance all over people.

A second racist caricature from Dan Schneider’s time is “Little Fetus,” “the youngest rapper of all time.” This role was given to a younger Bryan Christopher Hearne. Unsurprisingly, this character also required a costume: a flesh-colored skin suit and prosthetics for an extra large head. Hearne also mentioned that someone on the set commented how his skin suit ought to be “charcoal.” During an interview with GMA, Giovonnie Samuels and Bryan Hearne both explained how they felt subject to discrimination and racist jokes during their time working with Schneider.

Hearne’s mother, Tracey Brown was also invited to corroborate the claim that Schneider had signed off on racist sketches and stories. Brown continued that she complained so much she began to feel like the odd one out. On a certain occasion, she had to raise an alarm about a scene involving a “young lady” massaging a producer in a scene. There was also a sketch featuring a Black child selling cookies by the side of the road that suggested the apparent innuendo of a Black person peddling drugs.

A Caucus Of Predators

An insane fact about Nickelodeon is that the network employed several convicted child sex offenders. Quiet On Set focused primarily on the victims of the abuses committed by Dan Schneider, as well as Jason Handy and Brian Peck. Handy was found out after he emailed a picture of himself masturbating to a child actor. Furthermore, when he was arrested in 2003, Handy was found in possession of several forms of child pornography: images, videos, and CDs. He also had journal entries where he confessed to being a “pedophile, full-blown.” Disappointingly, Handy was sentenced to only six years in prison after pleading no-contest to his charges.

Brian Peck was embroiled in more shocking confessions from the interviewees. It was revealed that he was a huge-time fan of serial killer clown, John Wayne Gacy, who preyed on men. Peck had a painting, as well as a stash of fan letters and correspondence with the imprisoned Gacy, which he proudly showed off to the children. In 2003, Peck was subsequently arrested on 11 charges of child sexual abuse. He had also victimized a child actor whose identity was concealed as John Doe.

The Drake Bell Reveal

Near the tail end of the documentary, Joe Doe is revealed to be Drake Bell. Peck used his position as Bell’s acting and dialogue coach to detain him at his home and repeatedly assaulted him. He also managed to get Bell to fire his manager and father, Joe Bell. This was so he could have unsupervised access to the actor. Even more disappointingly, however, Peck was sentenced to only 16 months in prison on 2 of the 11 charges. After serving time for his repeated assault of Drake Bell, Brian Peck would go on to work at Disney Channel on The Suite Life Of Zack And Cody.

Conclusion

All of the allegations against Dan Schneider in the Quiet On Set documentary have been very serious. This has led to many wondering how he managed to escape punishment for so long. However, these allegations have been bubbling up for a while. For example, it is important to recall that Schneider only left Nickelodeon in 2018, after he was accused of repeated verbal abuse, which was also underscored by rumors of child abuse and sexploitation. Also, in 2022 former child star Jeanette McCurdy all but confirmed that the rumors were true. In her acclaimed memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, she recalled her dealings with  “The Creator.” It didn’t take too long to figure out that the persona was, in fact, Dan Schneider.

In the days after the documentary was aired, Schneider released a 19-minute-long apology video. In it, he claimed all allegations were false. However, he offered little explanation as to how they were untrue. Needless to say, nobody bought it.

Third Man Charged With Murder Over Chiefs Super Bowl Shooting

A third man has been charged with second-degree murder over the death of a woman at the Chiefs‘ Super Bowl parade last month. The 20-year-old from Kansas City was also charged with unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action. He is currently jailed on a $1 million bond and doesn’t have an attorney. “Everyone we’ve identified who discharged a firearm in response to the verbal altercation detailed here has been taken into custody,” Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney Jean Peters Baker said in a statement.

The charges follow two others already handed down. Lyndell Mays and Dominic Miller were both charged with second-degree murder. Authorities determined that it was a round from Miller’s gun that killed local radio host Lisa Lopez-Galvan. She had been in a nearby crowd of people watching the rally. Lopez-Galvn, also known as DJ Lisa, hosted a food program on a local radio station.
