Kamasi Washington And André 3000 Enter A ‘Dream State’ On Their Collaboration From Washington’s Upcoming Album

It was likely only a matter of time until Kamasi Washington and André 3000 teamed up. After all, André has spent the last half-decade wandering around playing woodwinds and Washington is one of the foremost big-band jazz revivalists working in music today. Sure enough, they’ve released their first collaboration, “Dream State,” complete with a well-suited, avant-garde music video. The track’s actually long enough that YouTube imposes its obnoxious ads on it before the first movement is even over, but the conversation between the two artists’ chosen instruments — sax and flute — is hypnotically engaging enough to make it worth sitting through a Fiji tourism commercial. Hell, I’d even pay for Premium (if I didn’t already have it and write it off on my taxes).

The song is from Washington’s upcoming album, Fearless Movement, which is out on May 3. In the album announcement press release, Kamasi calls it his “dance album,” elaborating, “It’s not literal. Dance is movement and expression, and in a way it’s the same thing as music—expressing your spirit through your body. That’s what this album is pushing.” The project was partially inspired by the birth of his daughter, and will also feature appearances from BJ The Chicago Kid, Coast Contra, DJ Battlecat, D-Smoke, George Clinton, and of course, frequent collaborators Terrace Martin and Thundercat.

Check out the video for “Dream State” above.

GloRilla Cried Real Tears When Surprised With A Touching Video Of Her Dad Expressing Pride For His ‘Baby’

GloRilla recently visited Club Shay Shay and reacted to LeBron James rapping along to “Yeah Glo!” At the time, GloRilla said, “My whole family, they big on sports. My dad and my brothers, and so it felt like a family trophy to me because they love this sh*t. Like, they watch this sh*t all day, and so all them was like, ‘You got LeBron singing your song?!’” The Memphis rapper added, “Nobody could tell me sh*t. I got LeBron’s co-sign. LeBron don’t co-sign [just] anybody.”

But nobody’s co-sign means more to GloRilla than her father’s.

Also this week, GloRilla stopped by the Tamron Hall Show and was brought to tears when Hall surprised her with a video from her father, Edwin C. Woods Sr.

“I’m the father of GloRilla, otherwise known as my baby, Gloria Woods,” he said. “I am very proud of my daughter. She has risen from humble beginnings to going to The White House. I am extremely proud of Gloria and may she have many, many more days of success.”

Meanwhile, GloRilla was crying real tears in the studio. “I love my dad so much,” she said. “He’s like one of the closest people to my heart. I love my dad.”

Glo touched on several other topics with Hall, including her collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion, the origin of her birth name (Gloria Hallelujah Woods), her gospel roots, and her recent trip to The White House, which resulted in a viral video with President Joe Biden.

Megan Thee Stallion’s New Album Might Not Have As Much “Pop That A** Music”

Female rappers have to fight twice as hard to be taken as seriously as their male counterparts. This seems largely due to their often-salacious material. Despite having all eyes on them while their booties are bouncing and bodies are bodying, hip-hop heads tend to forget the power behind people like Megan Thee Stallion’s pen. Her bars on tracks like “Freak Nasty,” “Cash S**t,” and “WAP” are in the caption under countless NSFW Instagram posts, but for her upcoming album, it sounds like the Houston native is thinking about switching things up.

“How many songs do y’all feel like y’all wanna hear on this album?” Thee Stallion asked her Instagram followers during a Live session this week. “In my mind, I was thinking 14, but I keep recording songs that’s so good!” According to the brunette beauty, her moods have been consistently changing lately, causing her to create a lot of different vibes throughout her music. “The first 20 songs I had, I’m just straight rapping. And then I started being in a better mood, so it’s like feel-good songs, and then I got in a ratchet mood ‘cuz you know it’s about to be summertime!” she shared.

Though it’s in her nature to make twerk-worthy anthems, Thee Stallion is feeling somewhat reluctant due to the hate she received in the past. “I just remember how y’all used to really whack me for making pop that a** music,” the multi-talent teased. “I really wanted to get on y’all’s a**es and show y’all how bad I can rap, so I really haven’t been in touch with my roots. I’m tryna see if y’all wanna pop that a**, what it’s giving?” The fashionista promised that her rappity rap tracks are coming through no matter what. Still, she’s curious to know how much people are planning on being outside and acting bad over the coming months.

Megan Thee Stallion isn’t the only femcee who’s excited about what she’s cooking up in the studio lately. Her tourmate, GloRilla, also has some new fire on the way, which she’s been teasing on social media ahead of Hot Girl Summer. Cardi B & Ice Spice’s Dominican Heritage Brings Them Together Amid Former’s Twitter Beef With Raymonte

No matter how often Cardi B reminds haters and trolls that she has no Mexican roots, they continue to insist that she doesn’t meet their definition of Black. This has become increasingly frustrating for the mother of two, who takes great pride in her Dominican heritage. Earlier this week, Bardi and a male content creator, Raymonte, found themselves trading shots. The latter compared himself to the former while trying to make a point about BIPOC creatives, causing some confusion. “It’s [wild] because when I became famous people said I’m ghetto, talked s**t about my accent, called me d*mb because [of] the way I speak. Said I got no couth, talk about my teeth, my braids, my two buns, and to this day, no matter what I accomplish I still get called a stripper,” the Grammy award winner ranted.

Raymonte didn’t initially understand Cardi’s anger, but she was quick to provide him with an explanation. “You know why I’m at where I’m at right now? Because I took all those no’s and recognized what I had to CHANGE. I had to change the way I talk, the way I act and the way I respond,” she shared in one tweet. In another, the Hustlers actress name-dropped a few other stars from the Dominican who aren’t treated as unfairly as she’s been.

Cardi B Responds to Raymonte’s Comparison Video

Among them was Ice Spice, who joined in on the conversation. “No offense Bardi, it’s ‘cus I have a Dominican parent and a Black one 😭🖤,” the younger New Yorker wrote on Twitter amid all the drama. “I think there might be some confusion on what was said,” Cardi B responded. “I asked why he feels so comfortable calling me Mexican [when] I have no Mexican parents, my mom is Trini… She came out of a whole Black woman.”

Ice Spice and Other Social Media Users Weigh In

“My father is Dominican, I’m Dominican just like you. I  also used other Dominicans as an example because as you should know a lot of times we get clustered into one because of the language,” the rap diva added before requesting Ice send her a photo of them together. Today in Hip Hop History: Big Pun’s Posthumous Sophomore LP ‘Yeeeah Baby’ Dropped 24 Years Ago

tumblr 035e6b930eb9db1dedd55ceac691cfaa 92a9de77 640

On this day in 2000, the first posthumous L.P. to be released by the first “Latin to go platinum” entitled Yeeeah Baby was released on the Loud/Terror Squad imprint.

Christopher “Big Pun” Rios passed away just shy of two months before his sophomore L.P.’s release and anticipated success, which came on the heels of his debut album, Capital Punishment. With appearances from the entire Terror Squad and executive production by the T.S. general Fat Joe, the 16-track album showed Pun’s acute diversity in his lyricism and approach to song-making, which yielded some of the most memorable songs of his career. The album took longer to record because of Pun’s extreme obesity since his breathing problems couldn’t permit him to spit his custom, rapid-fire flow freely.

Some of the L.P.’s favorites are the Puerto Rican anthem “100%” with Terror Squad crooner Tony Sunshine on the hook, “New York Giants” featuring M.O.P., “Ms. Martin,” an ode to his protege Remy Ma and the touching single “It’s So Hard” featuring Donnell Jones.

Salute to Big Pun, Pun Jr., and the entire Terror Squad for this remarkable piece of Hip Hop History!

Diddy’s Sons Retain El Chapo’s Lawyer Amid Homeland Security Raid Fallout

Screen Shot 2024 04 04 at 10.48.07 AM

The aftermath of the recent raid on Bad Boy Entertainment CEO Sean “Diddy” Combs’ mansion by Homeland Security has taken a new turn as his sons, Christian and Justin Combs, have retained high-profile legal representation. The raid, which occurred earlier this week, saw the two brothers being handcuffed and escorted out by federal investigators, sparking outrage from their mother, Misa Hylton, and others.

According to reports from The Daily Mail, the Combs brothers have enlisted the services of attorney Jeffrey Lichtman, known for his representation of high-profile clients, including drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and former mobster John Gotti Junior. Lichtman’s involvement comes as the family seeks to address what they perceive as the “excessive use of force” during the Homeland Security raid.

In an Instagram post, Lichtman expressed his concerns about the tactics used by law enforcement, describing the searches as “over the top.” He also hinted at representing at least one of the Combs brothers in the legal proceedings. “The government rarely fights fair when they have a major target in its sights, and they certainly haven’t played fair in Diddy’s case thus far,” Lichtman wrote.

The decision to bring in such a prominent attorney shows the seriousness with which the Combs family is approaching the situation.
