Fresh off of the Parish Fashion Week runway, Kodak Black is back with new heat.
This morning, Kodak Black shared a brand new single titled, “Maui Woop” — his first official drop of 2023. The new single takes inspiration from a recent trip to Hawaii, as seen in the music video, where he reflects on his early beginnings, how far life’s taken him, and his brush with death.
The rapper’s new single also serves as an homage to XXXTENTACION. Released right before X’s 25th birthday, Kodak Black opens up by referencing the death of his “Roll In Peace” collaborator. “I was in Hawaii/ Thinking about XXXTENTACION, when a n***a shot me,” he raps on the first verse. Later on, he raps, “Thinkin’ ’bout XXX, if a n***a get ups on me, then I’ll let him take it.”
Yak had a huge weekend that included massive contributions at Paris Fashion Week. Not only did he walk the runway, but he also collaborated with Doni Nahmias for NAHMIAS’s FW23 California Poetry collection.
“He has a hit single called ‘Super Gremlin,’ so he gave me his notebook and we took the handwritten lyrics and turned it into an artwork, and then made a faux fur fabric and created this oversize hoodie with it,” Nahmias told Hypebeast of his collaboration with Kodak. “He then wrote NAHMIAS throughout, so it’s all his handwriting in the print.”
Quotable Lyrics I’m in Maui Maui, thinkin’ ’bout you and all my n***as For everybody who lost they fuckin’ life to that pistol And for everybody on that slab right now, my n***a, I’m with you Behind these Jim Maui shades on, you don’t see my vision
The trial for the three co-defendants accused of killing XXXTENTACION begins this week, five years after the rapper died.
Per AllHipHop, the jury selection process in the XXTENTACION murder trial began on Wednesday. Michael Boatwright, 28, Dedrick Williams, 26, and Trayvon Newsome, 24. Prosecutors claim Boatwright shot XXXTENTACION while Williams and Newsome served as accomplices. All three face a life sentence if convicted. Police arrested the three on murder and robbery charges, though they pleaded not guilty to all counts.
The fourth suspect, Robert Allen, agreed to cooperate and testify against the other three as part of his plea deal.
In the pre-trial hearing, the attorneys for the murder suspects suggested that there could be other individuals with motives who could’ve killed XXXTENTACION. They previously shared a potential witness list that included names like Quavo and Offset, though one of the attorneys pressed the judge to order Drake to sit down for a deposition. They claimed that personal and financial motives could’ve led to X’s death, such as X’s feud with the Canadian artist. A judge told the attorneys that they needed substantial evidence beyond online feuds linking rap artists to XXXTENTACION’s death.
Still, it appears that Williams’ attorney is hopeful of the outcome of the trial.
“It’s been over four long years in the making. We are excited to take this first step to bringing Dedrick home,” Mauricio Padilla told the Associated Press.
The three suspects allegedly demanded money from X before shooting him and leaving with $50K in cash.
Following jury selection, the judge confirmed that opening statements in the trial will begin in Febuary. We’ll keep you posted on further updates surrounding the trial.
After more than four years, the trial of the three men accused of killing up-and-coming Hip-Hop star XXXTentacion will begin on January 18 in Fort Lauderdale.
Michael Boatwright, Dedrick Williams, and Treyvon Newsome all face armed robbery and first-degree murder charges, as well as the possibility of a life sentence if they are convicted. They have pleaded not guilty. XXXTentacion, whose real name is Jahseh Onfroy, was killed in Fort Lauderdale on June 18, 2018, when masked gunmen shot his car after leaving a motorcycle shop. After shooting him, the gunmen took a bag containing $50,000 that he had just withdrawn from the bank.
The defendants’ attorneys have suggested in arguments made to the court that there were third parties who had motives for killing XXXTentacion. However, reports have indicated significant evidence linking the accused to the crime. It was reported that investigators found Boatwright’s fingerprints on the door of XXXTentacion’s BMW and that Williams’ girlfriend told investigators that he was one of the gunmen. Additionally, investigators have stated that mobile phone data places the defendants at the murder scene. Boatwright and Newsome’s phones were found to contain pictures showing large amounts of $100 bills taken on the night of the murder.
Additionally, a fourth man implicated in the murder, Robert Allen, previously pled guilty to second-degree murder and is expected to testify against the other three men at the trial.
The defendants’ attorneys seemingly have their work cut out for them at this trial. Under Florida law, first-degree murder is committed when a person commits a “premeditated murder” – meaning pursuant to a pre-planned act or scheme – or “felony murder,” meaning committed while also engaged in committing a felony, such as robbery. From a sentencing standpoint, the difference between first-degree murder and second-degree murder is that first-degree murder requires a mandatory life sentence without parole. In contrast, second-degree murder requires a minimum 16.75-year sentence. Still, it may be increased up to a life sentence (if a person uses a firearm to commit second-degree murder, then their mandatory minimum is raised to 25 years). Although first-degree murder may carry a death sentence, it is not pursued by the prosecution in these cases.
The jury is expected to take three weeks, and the trial will last into March.

It’s been nearly five years since XXXTENTACION’s tragic murder. Ever since, authorities have been working tirelessly to solve the case.
There were originally three arrest warrants out for alleged suspects. However, one of them, Dedrick D. Williams, pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. This was not even two weeks after the murder took place.
Although there are a few other people of interest in the case, it certainly seems as though authorities believe Williams really is responsible. A new update from AllHipHop indicates that a new piece of evidence may solidify this.
Prosecutors allegedly believe that they are connecting the murder weapon to the discovery of a live round in Williams’ home. Additionally, they’re reportedly saying his phone pinged at the murder scene a mere one minute prior to the fatal shooting. Of course, this would be RIVA Motorsports in Florida.
The prosecutors also claim to have video footage of the suspect carelessly tossing around $100 bills just a couple of days after the murder. The “SAD!” artist was robbed of about $50,000 in cash at the scene.
This obviously doesn’t look good for Williams and his defence. His legal team is pulling out all of the stops in an attempt to free him though. Just a few weeks ago, his attorneys listed a number of high-profile names as potential witnesses. Among them are 6ix9ine, Joe Budden and Drake.
Furthermore, they really want the latter to testify in the case, alleging that he may somehow be responsible for X’s murder. Of course, the pair of artists were involved in a beef for a number of years. The Florida artist was responsible for accusing the Toronto star of stealing his flow. This was famously on his 2017 track, “KMT” with Giggs.
The murder trial will begin later this month. Finally, make sure to stay tuned to HNHH for all of the latest updates surrounding the case and any other pop culture news.
