Texas Volleyball Gets Hyped To Sexyy Red Before Defending National Title

The players on Texas’ women’s indoor volleyball team were caught getting hyped up to Sexyy Red’s “SkeeYee” after their national championship semifinal win over Wisconsin. The locker room video showed the assembled women going absolutely wild while singing along to one of the year’s biggest tracks. Released in June, “SkeeYee” became a cultural phenomenon despite only peaking at No. 62 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also referenced by the Troy Trojans football program after they scored a rivalry game win earlier this year.

A day later and Texas were once against NCAA champions. They swept title favorites Nebraska 2-0 in the national championship to defend their title from 2022. Furthermore, the title is the Longhorns’ fourth overall. They are the first team to win back to back titles since Stanford did so in 2018 and 2019. Additionally, the Longhorns overcame the odds to beat a one-loss Nebraska team seeking its first title since 2017. The Longhorns were a four-loss team but powered through their bracket, dropping just two sets on their way to the title.

Nebraska Volleyball Sets New World Attendance Record

It’s been a historic year for women’s collegiate volleyball. On August 30, Nebraska broke the record for the biggest crowd at a women’s sports event. After months of preparation, the Huskers hosted a volleyball doubleheader on a specially constructed court at Memorial Stadium. The stadium typically serves as the home of the school’s football team. The official attendance was announced at 92,003, breaking the record set by a Women’s Champions League soccer match in April 2022. The previous US record was the 1999 Women’s World Cup Final between the USA and China.

“It’s incredible. I don’t have enough words to describe it,” Nebraska middle blocker Andi Jackson said. “We were walking out of the tunnel after the second set, and we heard on the speaker we had just broken the world record. Everyone was trying to stay locked in, but we were also so excited. I can’t describe how grateful I am to be a part of it.”

LeBron James Proudly Posts Video Of Daughter’s Volleyball Game

LeBron James was a proud dad over the weekend as he posted a video of his daughter Zhuri playing volleyball. Granted, the competition wasn’t fantastic, however, LeBron’s daughter was seen scoring a few aces and playing some solid support and defense. “Another One in the making! Uh-Oh 😱!! Let’s Gooooooo Munchin!! @allthingszhuri got NEXT!! 🏐 VIBES!! #JamesGang👑 #ZTheWarriorPrincess👸🏾,” wrote as a caption for his proud post.

Of course, all of LeBron’s children are young sports stars in their own right. His eldest son, Bronny, is a freshman at USC and is viewed as a first-round draft pick in the NBA next year. His other son, Bryce, is a solid prospect in the 2025 recruiting class. Now it looks like Zhuri is a young volleyball star in the making. She’s only 8, so there’s plenty of time for her to follow in the family’s footsteps of basketball. But maybe she’ll stick with volleyball, a very well-regarded sport in its own right.

LeBron Voices Support For Israel

Elsewhere on Instagram, LeBron James has become the latest celebrity to voice his support for Israel amid their ongoing conflict with Palestine and the militant group Hamas. “The devastation in Israel is tragic and unacceptable. The murder and violence against innocent people by Hamas is terrorism. The SpringHill Company family sends our deepest condolences to Israel and the Jewish community. We pray for peace and reiterate our continued commitment to fight hate in all its forms. We all must work to ensure this tragedy does not spread hate, racism, and antisemitism,” LeBron wrote on Twitter.

Furthermore, he’s not the only athlete backing Israel. Floyd Mayweather has sent a private jet filled with supplies to Israel amid the nation’s ongoing conflict with Palestine. The plane landed over the weekend and delivered over 5000 lbs of supplies, everything from food to bulletproof vests. While Mayweather did not accompany the flight, it will be staffed by a four-man team of experienced pilots who have worked with Mayweather for a long time.

Kevin Durant And Jayson Tatum Invest In Women’s Volleyball League

Kevin Durant and Jayson Tatum are among the famous faces investing in a new women’s volleyball league. League One Volleyball, which is set to begin play in Fall 2024, received $35 million in its latest round of fundraising. Durant and Tatum were joined by celebrity backers such as Amy Schumer in more than doubling the league’s first funding round.

The league, which features a number of Olympians as players, will begin its first preseason in November 2024. It will then run its first regular season between January and April 2025. Six teams based in Atlanta, Houston, Madison, Omaha, Salt Lake City, and another location to be named later will compete in the league. It’s one of three new pro volleyball leagues that are set to begin playing next year. The Athletes Unlimited Volleyball league will be a more unique tournament format without set rosters. Meanwhile, the Pro Volleyball Federation will be a six-team league and main rival to the LOVB.

Nebraska Makes Volleyball History

Furthermore, the announcement of the major funding goal, and the support of famous athletes like Kevin Durant and Jayson Tatum comes weeks after one of the most impactful moments in the sport’s history. In late August, the University of Nebraska broke the record for the highest attendance at a women’s sporting event with their open-air “volleyball day”. After months of preparation, the Huskers hosted a volleyball doubleheader on a specially constructed court at Memorial Stadium. Additionally, the stadium typically serves as the home of the school’s football team. The official attendance was announced at 92,003. That broke the record set by a Women’s Champions League soccer match in April 2022.

I can’t describe how grateful I am to be a part of it.” Meanwhile, the Huskers have started the 2023 season 13-0. Furthermore, they are currently ranked #2 in the country behind Big Ten rivals Wisconsin.

Nebraska Volleyball Makes More History

The Nebraska Women’s Volleyball program has made history yet again. The #4 Huskers’ September 12 match against #5 Stanford set a new record for women’s volleyball viewership on ESPN. The network announced that 466,000 viewers tuned into the top-five match-up, setting a new benchmark for the sport on the platform. This milestone comes just a few weeks after Nebraska broke the record for the highest attendance at a women’s sporting event. The Huskers took a 3-1 win over the Cardinal to improve to 8-0 on the season. Their next match is a home game against #21 Kentucky on September 17. The 6-2 Cardinal will travel to #2 Louisville on Sunday for their next match.

A longtime powerhouse of the sport, Nebraska is having one of the best starts to a season in recent memory. Their win over Stanford was their first road win over a top-five team since 2017. That was also the year of the Husker’s last National Championship. Meanwhile, the team has opened the season 8-0 for the first time since 2016.

Huskers Riding Highs Of Historic Season

Regardless of the end result, this will be a historic season for the Huskers. That all began with the world record at Memorial Stadium last month. “It’s incredible. I don’t have enough words to describe it. We were walking out of the tunnel after the second set, and we heard on the speaker we had just broken the world record. Everyone was trying to stay locked in, but we were also so excited. I can’t describe how grateful I am to be a part of it,” middle blocker Andi Jackson said at the time. The Huskers were 4-0 after that open-air game against Omaha and have only continued to improve. They have dropped just two sets all season and are already putting their name in the contender status hat.

However, can the Huskers ride it to a National Championship? They are currently the only ranked team in the Big Ten. Furthermore, at the time of writing, they currently have no ranked opponents after #21 Kentucky this weekend. It feels like everything is set up to go the Huskers’ way this year. They last reached the National Championship game in 2021 but fell to Wisconsin. They missed out on a top-four finish with a home-court National Championship last year. Could 2023 be the season that they end their title drought? Only time will tell.

University Of Nebraska Breaks Record For Highest Attendance At A Women’s Sports Event

Volleyball is everything for the University of Nebraska. Long considered one of the sports powerhouses, the Huskers are five-time National Champions. While they haven’t won a title since 2017, the sport remains one of the biggest draws for the school. They once again proved that on August 30. The school broke the record for the biggest crowd at a women’s sports event. I can’t describe how grateful I am to be a part of it.” The Huskers have started the 2023 season 4-0 and are currently ranked #4 in the country.

Nebraska Record Shows Proof That Women’s Sport Is Growing

“There’s a great business case and strategy around women’s athletics long term that maybe college athletics hasn’t embraced,” Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts said. “And we think here in Nebraska, long before I became the athletic director, we’ve significantly invested in women’s athletics. You’re seeing the result of that by seeing the success of the volleyball program and the fan base surrounding it.” Meanwhile, head coach John Cook said going through the tunnel into a sea of red made him feel like a football coach. The event was also nationally televised.

“I’ve been saying it’s so huge for little girls to get to see a women’s sport and volleyball being played on this big of a stage and having so many people invest in it,” Nebraska junior Lexi Rodriguez said. “When you’re little, you have big dreams and big goals. Having this to look up to is something that a lot of little girls will keep in the back of their mind when they’re pursuing the sport of volleyball.”

Ice Spice’s High School Volleyball Pic Goes Viral

Screen Shot 2023 02 15 at 11.08.46 PM

An old high school photo of BX rap phenom Ice Spice on her HS volleyball team has gone viral, making even more fans curious as to what her life was like prior to her “Munch” fame.

In a pic with her teammates from Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers shows Spice posing with her signature ginger hair, rocking number “4”. Spice wasn’t a slouch on the volleyball court either, earning herself a full scholarship to SUNY Purchase, but dropped the sport after a year in college.

Ice also considered becoming an actress as well as enrolling in beauty school before deciding that rap would be her calling. Ice’s high school volleyball photo arrived a week after her yearbook photo also popped up online.

Ice Spice’s High School Volleyball Photo Surfaces Online

Now that Ice Spice has obviously made a name for herself, many are wondering about the New Yorkers’ humble beginnings. We recently learned that her dream before rapping fell into her life was to pursue a career in acting. Additionally, she’s revealed some of her biggest rap influences, and how she crafted her stage name.

The 23-year-old can obviously tell us all about her past. Still, we all know a picture is worth a thousand words. Thankfully, internet sleuths have been able to unearth photos from Spice’s time in high school, including her yearbook photo. When that began circulating social media some weeks ago, users were quick to point out the resemblance between the rising artist and Lauren London.

Of course, not everyone agreed. However, many couldn’t deny that seeing the “Bikini Bottom” hitmaker sporting straight black hair rather than her usual tight red curls made them look incredibly alike. On her “In Ha Mood” single, Spice even seemingly referenced the comparisons, rapping, “Pretty face like Lauren and a big ass butt.”

On Tuesday (February 14), yet another throwback photo of the Bronx native appeared online. This one proves that she previously spent some time dabbling in athletics. The slightly blurry image sees a much younger Isis Gaston sporting her usual curly hair. She offers the camera a closed-mouth smile while seemingly kneeling in her high school volleyball uniform.

During her time on the team, Spice proudly repped number four. According to a TikTok posted earlier this year, she went on to play for Purchase College Athletics Women’s Volleyball after graduating. Thanks to a scholarship, she was also allegedly able to study Biology while playing the sport she loves.

Fans are clearly eating up the older images of the redhead. Thankfully, there have been plenty of new ones surfacing lately too. Less than a year ago, hardly anyone had heard of Spice, and now she’s sitting front row during runways and performing at New York Fashion Week parties. Read all about the starlet’s latest adventures here, and check back later for more pop culture news updates.
