Tara VanDerveer Ties All-Time NCAA Coaching Wins Record

Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer has tied the all-time NCAA coaching wins mark set by legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. Win No. 1202 for VanDerveer came against Oregon, with the No. 8 Cardinal prevailing 88-63 despite losing star senior Cameron Brink in the first quarter. VanDerveer, who took over at Stanford in 1985, can make history and take the record for herself on January 21 against Oregon State. VanDerveer began her coaching career in 1978 at Idaho. She earned her 100th win in 1983 while coaching Ohio State. She hit 1000 wins in 2017.

“It’s a tribute to the great teams I’ve had, the great places I’ve worked. It’s been really exciting because so many people have reached out to me. It’s great for women’s basketball that there’s a lot of attention. I work at a great place, and I have so much support,” VanDerveer told the Pac-12 Network after the win. “Sometimes I can take it for granted because I see her every day. But she’s really been someone who’s changed the game. So it’s an honor to play for her. Every day, I learn something from her,” junior Kiki Iriafen told ESPN.

Caitlin Clark Continues To Make History

The 2023/24 season is shaping up to be a truly historic season for women’s collegiate basketball. Caitlin Clark, a star senior at Iowa, is barreling towards the all-time career scoring record for women’s basketball. At the time of writing, Clark sits in fourth in all-time scoring, with 3306 points. That puts her 222 points away from breaking the record set by Washington’s Kelsey Plum in 2017. Currently averaging 31 points a game, Clark will beat the record during a road game at Indiana on February 22.

However, will Clark declare for the WNBA, where she is the presumptive No. 1 draft pick? That remains to be seen. “I’m going to know when I need to know. I think it’s very similar to my college decision. It’s like I’m in the recruiting process again. It’s really not something I think about every day or let weigh on me. I’m focused on helping this team be the best they can be. The biggest thing is I’m just going to trust my gut. I’m not going to do a lot of research on what’s better. I’m going to trust my gut and go with that,” Clark before the season.

Robert Griffin III Recalls Being Warned By “ESPN” About NSFW Jokes On Air

Robert Griffin III revealed that a particularly bawdy joke told on an ESPN broadcast last year got him in a great deal of trouble with the network. “We had this game for Oregon State. I’m calling the game, and it’s Oregon State against Stanford. Early in the game, I’m like, ‘Let’s see how much wood these Beavers can take. I had like six other borderline things that I said in that game. I got a call after that game because it was way too much. It was egregious. It wasn’t like ‘Hey, you’re gonna get fired if you keep doing this.’ But it was like, ‘Hey, you probably shouldn’t keep doing this’,” Griffin told Kay Adams of FanDuel.

ESPN has tried to walk the line between entertainment and professionalism for many years. Stephen A. Smith has often blended this line, especially in recent months as his podcast, which is not an ESPN product, has grown more and more bawdy. Similarly, the ManningCast has seen its hosts push the boundary of what ESPN will and will not allow on its platforms.

Desmond Howard Has Hilarious Slip-Up On “ESPN”

Of course, there is nothing that can be done about unintentional lewdity. Back in October, Desmond Howard went viral for a misheard chant while covering the Border War rivalry game. As then-#7 Washington and then-#8 Oregon prepared to face off in their first-ever top-ten clash, Howard was working the crowd alongside Harry the Husky, Washington’s mascot. “He got the Big Penix Energy! I said, he got that Big Penix Energy!” Howard chanted in reference to Washington QB and Heisman front-runner Michael Penix Jr.. However, as Penix’s surname is pronounced “Pee-nix”, Howard’s energy chanting definitely made it sound like he was saying “Big Penis Energy” instead.

As for the game itself, it was a true instant classic. The two PNW schools engaged a thrilling shootout that saw Washington survive and stay undefeated as Oregon’s kicker shanked a game-tying field goal as time expired. The Dawg faithful stormed the field to celebrate Washington’s 36-33 win. Penix Jr. had another stellar game, throwing for 302 yards and four touchdowns. Meanwhile, running back Dillon Johnson added another score on the ground along with a 100-yard game. Cooking the secondary all game long, two Washington receivers surpassed 100 yards on the day.

Deion Sanders Stunned As Colorado Blows 29-0 Lead Against Stanford

Deion Sanders was almost left speechless after his Colorado Buffaloes blew a 29-0 halftime lead to lose in double overtime to Stanford. “From youth on, I don’t remember being up 29-0 and losing a football game, I really don’t. This is a little tough for me,” Sanders admitted in his post-game press conference. Furthermore, Sanders chalked the loss up to complacency. “I talked to them about the old cliche people say — it’s 0-0 but that’s not true. It’s not 0-0, it’s 29-0. I felt complacency going into the half because we stalled offensively, gave up some yardage as well. Just didn’t like how I felt going in at halftime. We come back out and here comes complacency. Here comes that team that I can’t stand, that you can’t stand it. You can’t understand how in the world that happens to us. But it did.”

With famous faces Cedric the Entertainer in attendance, Colorado raced out to a 29-0 lead and early in the third quarter, had a 99.8% probability of winning the Pac-12 matchup. However, the Cardinal preserved, outscoring the Buffs 46-14 across the second half and overtime. It became the biggest comeback in Stanford history, as well as the biggest blown lead in Colorado history. After barely escaping 1-win Arizona State last week thanks to a field goal, Colorado had to watch as a game-ending field goal sealed their loss to 1-win Stanford.

Colorado Eye Brutal Stretch To End Season

Sitting at 4-3, Colorado will need to bounce back in a serious way to secure bowl eligibility. However, that is easier said than done given how the rest of their season looks. Four of their five remaining opponents are currently ranked, with all four ranked in the top 20. Meanwhile, their only unranked opponent, Arizona, recently pushed USC to triple overtime. It is by no means an easy feat for Colorado to reach 6-6, let alone a winning record.

Despite this, they will have a week to recover. Next weekend is Colorado’s bye, where they will look to shore up a defense that ranks 7th worst in the country in terms of points allowed. After that, the first game of their season-ending gauntlet is a road game against #18 UCLA. Colorado will have two more home games this season (#15 Oregon State, Arizona). However, they will finish the season with back-to-back road games (#19 Washington State, #16 Utah).

Deion Sanders On Travis Hunter Suiting Up Against Stanford: “There’s A Tremendous Chance He Plays”

Deion Sanders is cautiously confident that he will have two-way star Travis Hunter back in the Colorado lineup when the Buffaloes take on Stanford this Friday. “There’s a tremendous chance he could play. It goes by how he looks, how he performs in practice, how his wind is. He has to be in shape. “I don’t want him to be a liability, I want him to always be a tremendous asset. Travis came to me [Monday] morning, saying, ‘What more can I do to help us get to the point that we need to get to?’ I love the team aspect of Travis 100 percent. I hope he can play,” Sanders told reporters this week.

Hunter has been out since suffering a lacerated liver against Colorado State on September 16. Since then, Colorado has dropped from 3-0 to 4-2. They opened Pac-12 play with back-to-back losses against Oregon and USC. However, they were able to survive 1-4 Arizona State to escape with a win and snap an eight-game conference losing streak.

Colorado Eye Bounce Back Against Ailing Cardinal

Colorado may have gotten the win last weekend, but it wasn’t clean and it didn’t leave Sanders in the best mood. “Wonderful win, but we played like hot garbage and I’m trying to figure it out. I’m sick of this. We’re better than this,” Sanders said following the 27-24 win. He also alluded to the team’s reliance on his son, starting quarterback Shedeur, bailing them out of bad performances. “It’s like we’re waiting on him to put on his cape and do what he does. That’s what he does every week.” Arizona State had Colorado’s for most of the game. However, a 43-yard pass in the final minutes allowed the Buffs to kick the game-winning field goal

Next up on the docket is 1-4 Stanford. It’s been a terrible year for the Cardinal, with their sole win coming against Hawai’i in Week 1. Their subsequent four-game losing streak included a 30-23 loss to FCS side Sacramento State. It’s the perfect game for Colorado to reset ahead of a tough second half of the season. Colorado’s final five games of the season feature four ranked opponents (UCLA, Oregon State, Washington State, and Utah). It also features a game against Arizona, who pushed USC to triple overtime last weekend.

Nebraska Volleyball Makes More History

The Nebraska Women’s Volleyball program has made history yet again. The #4 Huskers’ September 12 match against #5 Stanford set a new record for women’s volleyball viewership on ESPN. The network announced that 466,000 viewers tuned into the top-five match-up, setting a new benchmark for the sport on the platform. This milestone comes just a few weeks after Nebraska broke the record for the highest attendance at a women’s sporting event. The Huskers took a 3-1 win over the Cardinal to improve to 8-0 on the season. Their next match is a home game against #21 Kentucky on September 17. The 6-2 Cardinal will travel to #2 Louisville on Sunday for their next match.

A longtime powerhouse of the sport, Nebraska is having one of the best starts to a season in recent memory. Their win over Stanford was their first road win over a top-five team since 2017. That was also the year of the Husker’s last National Championship. Meanwhile, the team has opened the season 8-0 for the first time since 2016.

Huskers Riding Highs Of Historic Season

Regardless of the end result, this will be a historic season for the Huskers. That all began with the world record at Memorial Stadium last month. “It’s incredible. I don’t have enough words to describe it. We were walking out of the tunnel after the second set, and we heard on the speaker we had just broken the world record. Everyone was trying to stay locked in, but we were also so excited. I can’t describe how grateful I am to be a part of it,” middle blocker Andi Jackson said at the time. The Huskers were 4-0 after that open-air game against Omaha and have only continued to improve. They have dropped just two sets all season and are already putting their name in the contender status hat.

However, can the Huskers ride it to a National Championship? They are currently the only ranked team in the Big Ten. Furthermore, at the time of writing, they currently have no ranked opponents after #21 Kentucky this weekend. It feels like everything is set up to go the Huskers’ way this year. They last reached the National Championship game in 2021 but fell to Wisconsin. They missed out on a top-four finish with a home-court National Championship last year. Could 2023 be the season that they end their title drought? Only time will tell.

ACC Adds Stanford And Cal, Officially Killing Pac-12

The presidents and chancellors of schools in the ACC voted Friday (September 1) to admit Stanford, Cal, and SMU to the conference in 2024. This brings the east coast powerhouse to 18 full members, with 17 participating in football. However, the move also officially kills any hope that the Pac-12 brand would live on. Stanford and Cal were two of the four remaining Pac-12 members following a mass exodus earlier in the summer. While some discussions were had about rebuilding the Pac-12, it appears that the two prestigious colleges had other ideas. Previous votes had failed. However, NC State flipped their vote to support the move.

“We are thrilled to welcome three world-class institutions to the ACC, and we look forward to having them compete as part of our amazing league. Throughout the evaluation process, the ACC Board of Directors, led by [University of Virginia] President [James] Ryan, was deliberate in prioritizing the best possible athletic and academic experience for our student-athletes and in ensuring that the three universities would strengthen the league in all possible ways. Cal, SMU and Stanford will be terrific members of the ACC and we are proud to welcome their student-athletes, coaches, staff and entire campus community, alumni and fans,” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips said in a statement.

Pac-12 Dies As ACC Grows

As mentioned, the move leaves the Pac-12 as the Pac-2 heading into 2024. The only teams left in the conference at the time of writing are Oregon State and Washington State. Those schools had been in talks with the AAC, also known as The American. However, per ESPN‘s Pete Thamel, those talks have broken down as a result of the news coming out of the ACC.

It’s the latest move towards collegiate football adopting a superconference model. The Big 10 and ACC will have 18 schools apiece in 2024. Meanwhile, the SEC and Big 12 will each have 16 schools from next year. If the two remaining Pac-12 schools join the nearest conference, the Mountain West, they will push league membership. All this comes as the collegiate football season kicks off in earnest over the next few days.
