Grimes Disappointed By Cancelation Of The Weeknd’s “The Idol” Show

Grimes is no stranger to using her social media and various interviews to express her thoughts on all kinds of issues. One of those is The Idol. During the controversial run of The Weeknd and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson’s show on HBO, Grimes often tweeted in favor of it. That’s why she was one of the first people that came to mind for many after a recent announcement. The future of the show had been speculated on for months after it received decent commercial success but took an unbelievable critical beating. Earlier this week, HBO officially confirmed that the show would not be returning for a second season.

Grimes took to Twitter to react to the defacto cancelation. “Call me crazy but I rly loved the idol. I feel like they didn’t have time to finish it but it reminded me of perfect blue meets basic instinct kinda? I wish they could have another season to rly get into the Machiavellian femme fatale arc w Depp.” She continued to compare the show to cult classic Perfect Blue and muse on where the show could have gone. “When I saw perfect blue my main thought was it would have been better if she was the villain. I feel like the idol was gonna go there but it felt like they didn’t have enough time to get there.” Check out the entire post below.

Grimes Shares Where She Hoped “The Idol” Would Go

This is far from the only time Grimes has shared controversial views online. Earlier this month she took to Twitter to defend Doja Cat and Lizzo, who were both going through their own kinds of controversies. She defended Doja after the “Paint The Town Red” singer picked a fight with her own fanbase over their support.

Perhaps more controversially, Grimes spoke out in support of Lizzo. The “About Damn Time” singer is facing some serious allegations of workplace harassment in a lawsuit brought on by three former dancers. Grimes Has A Lot Of Thoughts About The Weeknd’s ‘The Idol’ Getting Canceled: ‘It Had Its Flaws But I Am So Tired Of Everything Being Perfect’

After months of doubt about whether The Weeknd’s controversial HBO series The Idol would return for a second season, it was made official yesterday (August 28): No, the show is not continuing. Grimes, a fan of The Idol, was bummed about the cancellation news, as she revealed on X (formerly Twitter).

In a series of tweets, Grimes discussed what she liked about the show, what she wanted to see from it next, and some other things she noticed. She wrote:

“Call me crazy but I rly loved the idol. I feel like they didn’t have time to finish it but it reminded me of perfect blue meets basic instinct kinda? I wish they could have another season to rly get into the Machiavellian femme fatale arc w Depp.

When I saw perfect blue my main thought was it would have been better if she was the villain. I feel like the idol was gonna go there but it felt like they didn’t have enough time to get there. The music is also p good in it honestly – I wasn’t expecting that.

I liked the over the top dialogue – it felt like an homage to a lot of things I miss, it also reminded me of anime the way Brit Marling’s the OA feels like irk anime. If u imagine it animated it rly works – tho depp is totally magnetic on screen I wouldn’t trade the casting

Nina mcneelys choreo is also just astoundingly good especially depps solo near the end of the season. Jennie did suchhh a good job w those dance sequences too- it was mimicking something more basic but actually rly elevated and gorgeous.

I wanted so much more of the red hair journalist arc. Idk, it had it flaws but I am so tired of everything being perfect. I loved the messiness and the humanity and the self indulgence. U could tell everyone was loving filming it. I ride for the idol haha idk.”

The Weeknd’s ‘The Idol’ HBO Show Has Been Canceled, And The Official Statement Acknowledged One Of Its Only Notable Qualities

Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, may be a massive star, breaking streaming statistics and Guinness World Records. Unfortunately, his musical success hasn’t yet translated into his budding television career. According to Deadline, HBO has officially canceled his original series The Idol.

A spokesperson for the network released a statement regarding the decisions, saying, “The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers, have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”

Before the show’s release, rumors surrounding it quickly turned many fans off. The Weeknd spoke out against the criticism and even clapped back at people online who shared negative opinions on the series. But, it was all in vain, as The Idol went on to earn the lowest rating on Rotten Tomatoes for any HBO series ever.

The Weeknd later opened up about the “bumpy journey” it took to arrive at the show’s finale. The series’ other featured actors, including Blackpink’s Jennie, Troye Sivan, and Lily-Rose Depp, have not yet released any public statements.

“The Idol” From The Weeknd Officially Canceled By HBO After One Season

The Weeknd’s HBO series with “Euphoria” head Sam Levinson this year, “The Idol,” was certainly an event. It was far from a beloved, perfect, and praised one, but it was still one of the most dominant and divisive cultural conversations of 2023 so far. Amid criticisms of the show’s quality itself, its themes and graphic depictions of them, and reports on the series’ behind the scenes wrongdoing and chaos, there was a lot to unpack and pick apart with the story of Jocelyn and Tedros. Rumors already spread that HBO wouldn’t renew it for another run, bolstered by its conclusion that came an episode early. Now, we officially know that “The Idol” is over.

“‘The Idol’ was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response,” a network representative reportedly stated to The Hollywood Reporter. “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.” While this news isn’t exactly surprising, it’s also quite sad to see this potential go to waste, regardless of whether you liked it or not.

“The Idol” Is No More

Furthermore, The Weeknd’s spoken out a lot about this negative reception to the show and defended their original vision for it, however misguided or poorly executed. “My goal was for people to feel that way when they watch it, you know, and that they’ll reassess (fame),” he told Variety in an interview. “It’s almost educational that this is what comes with being incredibly famous. You’re surrounded by people who you’re not sure what their true intentions are, even if it seems like they’re good. You just never know. I’ve been very fortunate to have people around me that I’ve known almost my entire life, which is important and is a gift.”

“I’m loving it,” the Canadian star told GQ of the divisive fan reception. “It’s definitely shaken up the culture for sure. We knew we were making something dark and controversial but true to what we want to say.” Let us know what you thought of “The Idol” and how you feel about its cancellation down in the comments below. Selena Gomez Says “Single Soon” Isn’t About The Weeknd

This isn’t the only time that Selena Gomez’s relationship with The Weeknd has been brought up recently. Earlier this year the R&B star’s HBO show The Idol turned heads for pretty much its entire season-long run. During that rush of attention. Selena mentioned publicly that she believed the main character was based on her own life.

Earlier this year Selena Gomez had a brush with Beyonce’s security while trying to attend the fellow singer’s concert. Selena Gomez Speaks Up About Rumors That ‘Single Soon’ Is About A Certain Famous Ex Of Hers

Selena Gomez’s new song “Single Soon” is about preparing for a breakup, so naturally, there’s been tons of speculation and theorizing about whether the song is inspired by one of Gomez’s famous exes. Some believe the track is about The Weeknd and the song’s opening verse certainly helps fuel that speculation: “Should I do it on the phone? / Should I leave a little note / In the pocket of his coat? Yeah / Maybe I’ll just disappear / I don’t wanna see a tear / And the weekend’s almost here.”

Gomez is putting all that to rest, though. Over the weekend, Hollywood Life shared an Instagram post that made note of the speculation about The Weeknd, and Gomez commented, “Couldn’t be more false.”

The Weeknd was on Gomez’s radar recently for a different reason: She caught wind of an AI-generated recording that made it sound like she was singing “Starboy.” She commented simply, “Scary.”

She also recently spoke about her classic hit “Who Says,” saying, “I was working with Disney at the time, and they were actually giving the song to another artist. I cried — I remember I was with my mom — because I loved the song so much. […] And so maybe it just didn’t work out with the other artist, but that was a gift to me that I did not know I needed. I love that song, and it has carried with me through my whole career, and I fought for it. So to be honest, I, to this day, need to hear it.”

The Weeknd Posts Studio Pics With Metro Boomin & Mike Dean, Fuels Release Rumors

Abel Tesfaye will soon hang up The Weeknd moniker, but not before he finishes his trilogy (and discography) with its last installment. Moreover, his most recent social media post hinted to fans that his last era is in development, and that he has some big and familiar names helping him out. The Canadian superstar recently uploaded some studio session pictures to his Twitter account featuring none other than Metro Boomin and Mike Dean. Considering both legendary producers’ extensive collaborative history with Abel, it’s no wonder that fans are expecting more heat from this link-up. All they can hope for is that something drops soon, and that this post isn’t just a tease that won’t come to fruition for a while longer.

However, since the After Hours creative is still on tour, maybe he takes a while before diving into another project full-on. That being said, he did keep up with the rollout and release of his HBO series “The Idol” during these tours, in addition to dropping new music for it. Sure, the show was far from the most universally praised piece of content this year, but it was certainly one of the most talked-about. As such, all this anticipation and these extracurricular have fans thirsting for The Weeknd’s grand finale.

The Weeknd, Mike Dean & Metro Boomin Are Cooking Something Up

Furthermore, the most likely scenario is that his next album will complete the trilogy established by the aforementioned 2020 LP and Dawn FM. Still, there are other avenues that The Weeknd could take to wrap up this phase of his career, and they might involve some names in these studio snaps. For example, Mike Dean said that he and the 33-year-old are working on a joint project. Given their appearances on each other’s previous work, this wouldn’t be surprising, but no less welcome for die-hards.

Meanwhile, we’ll see if the XO mogul returns to R&B and trap-flavored sounds or if he keeps the club party going with more dance inspiration. Either way, it should make for a monumental, grandiose, and fitting end to one of the most influential and successful artistic runs of the 21st century. One thing’s for sure, though: maybe the name behind House Of Balloons will be no more, but Abel Tesfaye’s not going anywhere. A Stagehand For The Weeknd Is Suing Live Nation, Claiming He Was Run Over By Forklift

About a year ago, The Weeknd was on his After Hours Til Dawn Tour. It kicked off at the beginning of July and ended at the start of September, although he’s now continuing overseas. However, there was an incident at The Weeknd’s concert at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

On August 14, 2022, a stagehand by the name of Steve Genovese was allegedly run over by a forklift while working on The Weeknd’s elaborate stage setup. Now he is suing Live Nation for five counts of civil liability including negligence, negligent hiring, and gross negligence.

“While marking the floor for the stage dimensions, [Genovese] was run over by a forklift which was being operated by another worker on site,” the complaint says, according to Pitchfork. “As a result, [he] suffered severe, excruciatingly painful, and permanently disabling injuries to his leg. The flesh and muscle were torn away from [his] leg and were detached from the bones.”

“Defendants had the knowledge, ability, and duty to prevent the severe and life-altering injuries inflicted on [Genovese],” it continues. “Instead, [they] placed more value on their own financial gain than on the safety of the workers who helped put on The Weeknd concert.”

It argues that Live Nation “failed and refused to provide qualified forklift drivers and adequate staff as agreed in their respective contracts.”

The Weeknd Hilariously Regretted Letting A Fan Sing Into The Microphone During His Recent Show

The Weeknd is currently continuing his international stops of his After Hours ‘Til Dawn Tour. At a recent show, according to HipHopDX, the Canadian performer was singing “Out Of Time” when he decided to let a fan in the audience briefly take the reigns.

He passed the mic to a woman in the front row and instantly regretted it, as documented in a hilarious video. Her scream was so loud and wild singing along that The Weeknd made a telling face and then took the mic right back, moving instead further down the crowd.

Overall, though, he’s been having a pretty good tour. According to Live Nation UK, he “broke Wembley Stadium’s record for sales with their traditional concert set up with the stage at one end of the stadium with 87,000 tickets sold.”

Last month, The Weeknd also broke the attendance record during his two shows at London Stadium, which reportedly drew in 160,000 fans.

“It’s incredible to see the Weeknd hit this milestone less than halfway through his massive sold-out European run,” Live Nation’s touring president, Omar Al-joulani, praised. “This historic moment in London shows the global fan base he has cultivated over the years.”

Still, with all of those fans flooding to his concerts, something wild was bound to happen eventually.

The Weeknd Gives Mic To A Fan, It Goes Horribly

The Weeknd is wrapping up the European leg of his massively successful tour called After Hours Til Dawn. It is his worldwide expedition to celebrate to share his two commercial smash records, After Hours (2020) and his most recent pop endeavor, Dawn FM (2022). Both have some of his biggest hit songs. After Hours contains the globally popular “Blinding Lights,” as well as “Save Your Tears” and the title track “After Hours.” With Dawn FM, there might not have been many radio-ready songs, but you have amazing 80s synth-pop cuts. “Sacrifice,” “Take My Breath,” “Less Than Zero,” and more.

Both respective albums have brought so much to the table in terms of the soundscapes and a new direction for The Weeknd. So much so, that these projects have led to a record-shattering tour. It is the highest-grossing tour of the last decade pulling in over 350 million dollars. It also holds the achievement for the highest attendance for a single show and back-to-back shows. 80,000 fans filled the seats twice at London Stadium.
