Larry June And The Alchemist’s Hazy ’89 Earthquake’ Video Basks In The Glory Of Their Riches

An exciting new collaboration is underway. Today (March 3), rapper Larry June and producer The Alchemist have announced their upcoming joint album, The Great Escape, which is coming later this month.

In addition to the album announcement, the two have shared a new single, “89 Earthquake,” as well as its accompanying visual.

Over a breezy, piano-driven beat, June basks in his riches while reflecting on the journey that led him there. At this point in his career, his earned the reaping of what he’s sown.

“Real millionaire sh*t, might put it in the Benz / Write the sh*t off on taxes, have a five-star dinner / Tell it how it is, mane, livin’ how I live, mane / Rolls gold piеce just to complement thе drip, mane / Stay up on your toes, make sure the money straight,” he raps.

In the accompanying visual, June and The Alchemist, are seen in luxurious scenarios, like playing chess on a private jet, and driving through the city in vintage rides. These scenes are juxtaposed with clips of June in a bodega, and near other San Francisco neighborhoods, reminding fans where he came from.

You can watch the video for “89 Earthquake” above.

The Great Escape album is out 3/31 via Empire.

Larry June And The Alchemist’s ’60 Days’ Video Is A Dream World

Larry June and The Alchemist are up to something. Before “60 Days,” their collaborative single out today (February 15) begins, an enticing message displays across the screen: “Larry June x The Alchemist THE GREAT ESCAPE MMXXIII.”

It stands to reason that “60 Days” is kicking off a larger rollout between the Bay Area rapper and the Grammy-nominated producer, and if this Sean Kelly-directed video is any indication of their vibe for 2023, sign me up.

“60 Days” finds June and The Alchemist sequestered in a mansion up on the hill. June takes in his scenic surroundings from an exercise bike, relishes in his luxurious cars and reflects on his road to riches.

“First game, touchdown, played for four seasons,” June raps with a content, relaxed delivery over even smoother instrumentals. “She made a thousand first night, I told her she can keep it / Two days in Napa Valley, I’m eating Saganaki / I’m riding dirty through the traffic, took the matte Ducati / I get impulsive, if I want it, then I go and cop it.”

The Alchemist even dropped a few bars — calling himself “a big bowl of macaroni” and referencing former NFL wide receiver Plaxico Burress’ 2008 incident when he accidentally shot himself in the leg. “Stick shift Aston, I’m diggin’ in my trick basket / Fixin’ plays, cut up the pot and split the change,” Alchemist spits. “A lot of sh*t could happen in 60 days.”

June and The Alchemist have separately made a lot happen over the last year. June released his Spaceships On The Blade album last August. The Alchemist produced on Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy-nominated Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. More recently, Uproxx’s October cover star Freddie Gibbs told XXL that he’s working on four joint albums and hinted that Alchemist is one of the producers involved.

So, who knows what will have happened 60 days from now.

Freddie Gibbs Says He’s Now Working On Not One, Not Two But Four Albums At Once

Uproxx cover star Freddie Gibbs has been more prolific than ever in recent years, releasing no fewer than five projects over the past five years. Beginning with Freddie in June 2018, he’s released at least an album a year since (if you count October 2018’s Fetti with Curren$y as his 2019 project). That number is about to rise drastically according to a new interview with XXL in which he boasts he’s now working on not just one but four joint projects with different producers, including ones with past collaborators Madlib and The Alchemist and his long-awaited R&B album.

“I’ma hit y’all with some sh*t that y’all thought y’all was ready for, but you really ain’t ready for,” he promises in the interview. Alchemist and Madlib ain’t going nowhere, so keep that in mind. And me and Boi-1da in the studio now real, real, real heavy. I’m making the best music of my life, so it’s no reason to stop. And I’m the king of R&B, so I gotta do that album as well.”

Gibbs first teased an R&B album in 2021, telling Revolt that Soul Sold Separately, his Warner Records major label debut from last year, “might be” one of his final rap albums. “I ain’t gotta rap no more, man,” he said. “After SSS, I’ma show y’all … I’m ’bout to bust out with an R&B album. R&B is what I started out doing before all the rap sh*t. Now, all you n****s just wanna make me rap all day, and I don’t wanna rap.” Given Fred’s sense of humor, he could well have just been joking, but considering he’s earnestly moving into movies and television and proving equally adept at acting, I wouldn’t put it past him to follow through and become just as accomplished while singing instead.

Freddie Gibbs Has Four Albums In The Works

Freddie Gibbs is proving to have an overwhelmingly successful career in the rap game. As he ventures off into other creative endeavors such as acting, music has always been his main focus.

He’s apparently working on four different projects right now. The Indiana native made the announcement in a recent lengthy interview with XXL.

Alchemist & Madlib ain’t goin’ nowhere, keep that in mind. Me and Boi-1da in the studio now, real heavy. I’m making the best music of my life, so it’s no reason to stop. And I’m the king of R&B, so I gotta do that [too],” he says in a part of the interview.

Of course, the “Crime Pays” rapper has full-length collaborations with both The Alchemist and Madlib in his discography. In 2014, he linked up with the Madvillain producer for Piñata. Five years later, the duo blessed fans with its follow-up, the 15-track Bandana.

In 2018, The Alchemist and Freddie linked up with Curren$y for a short, collaborative album, Fetti. The Indiana native and the decorated producer re-united in 2020 for a full-length release between just the two of them, Alfredo. They saw a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 2021 Grammy awards for their effort. However, Nas and Hit-Boy took the award home for the first album of their collaborative trilogy, King’s Disease.

Furthermore, the 40-year-old is still fresh off the release of his latest album, $oul $old $eperately. Serving as his fifth solo studio album, the project finds Gibbs making music with both his past and more recent sounds in one place.

Although he’s yet to make a full-length project with Boi-1da, the pair have collaborated in the past. Most recently, the Canadian producer has a production credit on “Space Rabbit”, off of $$$.

After implying that his 2022 album would be his final one, it’s certainly surprising to hear this news. “As of right now, I feel like I gave the world what it needed with $$$. I just wanna sit down and live life with my people…” he said during an AMA session on Twitter in October.

The Alchemist Is Combining His EPs ‘Bread’ And ‘Lunch Meat’ To Make An ‘Alchemist Sandwich’

Back in 2018, LA hip-hop producer The Alchemist released a pair of well-received EPs, Bread and Lunch Meat. Supported by singles like the Earl Sweatshirt-featuring “E. Coli,” the two EPs kickstarted a multi-year run in which the resurgent beatmaker dropped a string of successful collaborative projects with rappers like Conway The Machine, Armand Hammer, Boldy James, and of course, the Grammy-nominated Alfredo with Freddie Gibbs.

The prolific producer has been busy since dropping Bread and Lunch Meat, but that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten his past work. Today, he teased a new project, The Alchemist Sandwich, which will combine the previously released EPs with a pair of new songs to form a more complete whole. Names listed in the credits include Action Bronson, Benny The Butcher, Black Thought, Boldy James, Conway The Machine, Earl Sweatshirt, Meyhem Lauren, Roc Marciano, Schoolboy Q, Styles P, and Westside Gunn. What a lineup. He hasn’t given a release date, but it’s probably sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, fans are still wondering about the status of a pair of projects that were teased recently, yet have yet to surface. Last year, Vince Staples said that he had recorded enough verses for a full project with Alchemist and Earl, yet was waiting on them to put it out. Alchemist said that the Staples project was more or less complete. Alc also revealed he’d hidden a full Sweatshirt project on YouTube under a fake name. For now, though, his Alchemist Sandwich will have to be enough to keep fans … ahem … fed until his next body of work.
