SZA Drops ‘CTRL’ Deluxe To Celebrate Album’s 5th Anniversary

SZA

SZA fans have been patiently waiting, just as long as Kendrick fans, for SZA to drop her next album. Her critically acclaimed debut album, CTRL, dropped in 2017 and was hailed as an instant classic. Rumors and reports have been spreading about SZA being finished with her sophomore album that is slated to drop sometime this year. The only question is when?

But, today, June 7, SZA decided to bless her fans with a deluxe version of her classic debut. The deluxe comes just a couple of days after she teased the deluxe on Twitter.

“Unreleased songs from 2017 to celebrate 5 .. me thinks,” SZA tweeted. She followed it up with “What isn’t on deluxe maybe on SoundCloud as well tomorrow? Deciding . Spring cleaning old thoughts,” she added in another Tweet. SZA added, in another tweet. “Everything made in 2014-2016/17… not new lol to be absolutely clear

The deluxe features seven more songs including “2AM,” “Miles,” “Percolator,” “Tread Carefully,” “Awkward,” and “Jodie.” The deluxe also features an alternative version of her hit song “Love Galore.”

You can stream the deluxe from Spotify here

Pharrell’s Something In The Water Festival Special Guests Include Clipse, Justin Timberlake, And More

When Pharrell Williams announced the lineup for his upcoming Something In The Water Festival back in April, the flyer touted that he’d be joined by some “phriends” and “some people we can’t announce.” Now, with the festival’s Juneteenth weekend dates looming on the calendar, Pharrell apparently can announce just who his “phriends” are — and while they’re certainly exciting, they’re hardly surprising. Pharrell will be joined by a who’s-who of his former (and current) collaborators, including Clipse, Justin Timberlake, NORE, Q-Tip, SZA, and more.

Of course, Clipse, JT, and NORE are obvious picks. As part of The Neptunes with Chad Hugo, Pharrell had a hand in some of those acts’ biggest hits of the 2000s, including Clipse’s breakout single “Grindin’” and their first album, Lord Willin’, Justin Timberlake’s solo debut Justified, which included bangers like “Senorita,” “Rock Your Body” and “Like I Love You,” and NORE’s “Superthug” and “Nothin’.” Meanwhile, Q-Tip was always a production mentor of Pharrell’s, and Pharrell was even in an A Tribe Called Quest-inspired rap trio with Timbaland and Magoo in 1991 called Surrounded By Idiots (some of their demos are floating around the internet to this day and are worth a listen). And of course, Pharrell produced SZA’s fan-favorite CTRL cut “Supermodel.”

The rest of the festival’s roster is absolutely stacked as well; you can check that out below and get more info on Something In The Water here.

SZA Shares The Deluxe Edition Of ‘Ctrl’ And Even More Unreleased Songs Might Be On The Way

Earlier this week, SZA said she would be releasing unreleased songs from 2017 to celebrate the five-year anniversary of her instant-classic LP Ctrl. Today, she unveiled those tracks: “2AM,” “Miles,” “Percolator,” “Tread Carefully,” “Awkward,” “Jodie,” and a new version of the album’s Travis Scott collaboration “Love Galore.”

SZA also made a tweet today teasing even more music. She wrote: “What isn’t on deluxe maybe on SoundCloud as well tomorrow? Deciding . Spring cleaning old thoughts .” She then made a clarifying tweet after: “Everything made in 2014-2016 /17… not new lol to be absolutely clear .”

She also quote-tweeted a tweet from the Twitter account Chart Data, which reported that Ctrl has “spent 5 full years on the Billboard 200. It has never left the chart.” She wrote: “Thank y’all and thank GOD .”

Meanwhile, the singer also confirmed at the Met Gala that her new album is finished. When speaking with Vogue, she said, “The album’s finally ready to go — more than I’ve ever felt before. So this summer, it’ll be a SZA summer.” She also recently opened up about her relationship with social media: “Get off the internet. The internet is demonic,” she wrote on her Instagram Story. “I deleted my TikTok for mental health awareness month. I encourage everyone to delete anything anyone and everything that doesn’t serve you. Bless.”

SZA Hints That She’ll Be Dropping Multiple Unreleased Songs From The ‘Ctrl’ Sessions This Week

Now that Kendrick Lamar has ended his five-year album hiatus with the release of Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, we can devote our thirst and full attention to another TDE Records artist who is approaching the five-year mark: SZA. This Thursday, June 9th, will mark the five-year anniversary of when the “Love Galore” singer dropped her breakthrough album, Ctrl, and SZA has hinted that she’s ready to share a batch of unreleased tunes from that era to celebrate the occasion.

In a Monday tweet, SZA posted simply, “Unreleased songs from 2017 to celebrate 5 .. me thinks .” Hmm…ok. This would be a nice little precursor to a supposed new album this summer. At the Met Gala in early May, SZA told Vogue that, “The album’s finally ready to go — more than I’ve ever felt before. So this summer, it’ll be a SZA summer.” A drop of tracks from the Ctrl sessions would be like putting on a fresh coat of sunscreen before it gets really hot.

Meanwhile, SZA is set to make a slew of festival appearances this summer. Earlier today, she was just announced as a headliner for the Day N Vegas festival in September with J Cole and Travis Scott. She’s also atop the bill at San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival in August with Green Day and Post Malone.

J. Cole, SZA, And Travis Scott Will Headline Day N Vegas 2022

Day N Vegas is returning in 2022 with J. Cole, SZA, and Travis Scott as headliners. Scheduled for September 2-4 at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds, this will be the third iteration of the festival since 2019, as well as Travis Scott’s return since being removed as a headliner of the 2021 edition. Intriguingly enough, Travis also canceled his 2019 performance and was replaced at the last minute by Young Thug, so if he does perform this year, it’ll be the first time since the festival was started, even though he’s been on the lineup all three years. Weird, right?

In addition to the above-mentioned performers, Day N Vegas 2022 will include a who’s-who of hip-hop and R&B stars. 21 Savage, Baby Keem, H.E.R., Jhene Aiko, Playboi Carti, and Summer Walker fill out the top line of performers alongside Blxst, Don Toliver, Joji, Jorja Smith, Pusha T, and Trippie Redd, while the rest of the roster has rising stars and longtime genre mainstays like Amine, Babyface Ray, Chloe, City Girls, Doechii, Earthgang, JID, Jay Rock, Smino, Tobe Nwigwe, T-Pain, Vince Staples, and more.

Registration for presale passes is now open and passes will be available starting Friday, June 10 at 10 AM PT. You can find more information at Daynvegas2022.com.
