Latto “Sugar Honey Iced Tea” Album Review

Music industry pundits have long lamented that artist development has become a lost cause. The era of the overnight celebrity is the status quo when social media has cut out the middleman between art and the consumer. But for Latto, archival footage of her come-up dates back to when she was 13 years old with the bubblegum swag. Then came her appearance on The Rap Game, where she competed against other teenagers for a deal with Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def. In the years that followed, she grew into her own as an artist and an adult, sharing her wins and losses on a highly publicized stage.

The release of her latest album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea, proves how critical albums like Queen Of Da Souf and 777 were for shaping her trajectory. The former proved that she could make her mark as one of rap’s leading ladies. Add to the fact that earned a platinum and gold plaque off that album, she also had bragging rights as the first woman in hip-hop from Atlanta to reach such a feat. The arrival of 777 proved how well she could overcome the sophomore slump while facing pressure to rebrand in the face of controversy. Through this, she earned her first #1 hit with “Big Energy” and expanded her base through more pop-friendly bops, such as Jung Kook’s “Seven.”

On Sugar Honey Iced Tea, there’s a newfound sense of confidence in her sound and assurance of her spot in rap. Perhaps, it’s partially because the work she’s released over the past few years has seen her digging deeper into her potential. Her rapping abilities are unquestionable; songs like “Big Energy” showed her pop prowess; and recent releases, such as “Sunday Service” and “Put It On Da Floor” had the type of Southern swag to dominate the clubs and TikTok without feeling contrived.

Ultimately, Sugar Honey Iced Tea finds all of these elements of her artistry form into one, to various results. In many instances, the outcome leans into a Drake-esque sound, where the rap-sing delivery meets plaintive and icy trap production that opens up moments of surface-level introspection. Frankly, it seems less coincidental considering just days before, she appeared on Drake’s “Housekeeping Knows” records from the 100 Gigs leak. But, paired with her rendition of T.I.’s “24’s” on “Chicken Grease,” the same interpolation that Drake used on “Rich Flex,” it speaks to the undeniable musical lineage that’s been carried through decades and how Latto embodies these influences authentically.

More importantly, this album provides a vivid portrait of Latto as a woman, one who embodies the “Big Mama” persona to a tee. She can bring aggression on songs like the infectious bell-laden “Brokey” and “There You Go,” where she places a bullseye on her detractors. Then, she slips into decadent R&B vibes on records like “Copper Cove” ft. Hunxho and “Ear Candy” ft. Coco Jones, where embraces her femininity and shines as a vocalist. However, the moments where her bravado and feminity clash yield uneven results, such as “H&M” or the Playboi Carti-inspired, “Blicky.”

But for an album with as much ambition as Sugar Honey Iced Tea, it does sometimes feel like there’s more fluff than needed. The pressure to follow up the success of “Big Energy” results in a string of comparative sleepers in “Liquor,” the Megan Thee Stallion-assisted “Squeeze,” and “Good 2 You” ft. Ciara. Though both features are solid, with Megan delivering a particularly great verse, they sound less organic and break the fluidity of the sequence. However, these are simply a few flubs in an otherwise properly curated album that sees her reconnecting with Young Nudy on the uber-nasty “Shrimp & Grits” and showcasing her vocal range alongside Mariah The Scientist on “Look What You Did.”

Sugar Honey Iced Tea is an excellent display of Latto’s artistic prowess, from production choices to the vocal inflections that bring character to each record. But, she holds off the vulnerability for the closing record, “S/O To Me.” While the album as a whole feels like a celebration of everything Latto’s accomplished, the final song highlights her resilience, from manifesting her rap dreams as a young girl to navigating the predatory behavior of the music industry and knocking off her competitors in the rap game in a way that’s reminiscent of Drake’s timestamp records. “S/O To Me” is a reflection of her journey to date, the highs and lows, and the long road she took to claim her spot in hip-hop.

Latto Takes Heat From Ice Spice Fans Amid Disappointing Sales Projections

Latto’s new album Sugar Honey Iced Tea got a lot of love from her fanbase and from the wider hip-hop sphere… But comparison is the thief of joy. Moreover, some of her rival fanbases online, including that of Nicki Minaj and her big beef opponent Ice Spice, clowned the project’s first week sales projections, which point to a number 17 debut on the Billboard 200 chart with around 27,000 in album-equivalent units sold. Of course, this isn’t the worst chart debut of all time for an artist of the Atlanta femcee’s visibility, but it certainly isn’t making the big commercial splash that she and many others likely hoped for.

Numbers aren’t everything, but the fact that Latto has these feuds with other female rappers makes her (and them) an easy target for ridicule and clowning when things don’t go perfectly. But everyone would benefit from remembering that, beyond the very tip-top of the game which is still seeing diminishing returns compared to years past, pretty much every artist in the mainstream is finding it more and more difficult to get their sales numbers up without a massive and calculated backing campaign from the industry. For example, Ice Spice’s Y2K! debuted with 28,000 in first-week sales at number 18 on the Billboard chart, and despite it being about half the runtime of Sugar Honey Iced Tea, it still puts both LPs at pretty much the same level of commercial success for now.

Instead, what will really differentiate a lot of these albums and narratives is longevity and how these femcees and other artists across the industry will maintain their momentum or squander it. In Latto’s case, she’s got a tour coming up very soon that could help in this regard. Find more reactions to Sugar Honey Iced Tea‘s sales projections down below.

More Fan Reactions

Meanwhile, this is what Ice Spice had to say about her and Latto’s beef. “I feel like if we ever spoke and I asked her ‘What’s the issue?’ it’d be like a blank stare,” she expressed during a recent interview. “It’d really be no issue whatsoever. Especially from me. I can understand a friendly competition, but I just feel like at this point it’s a joke that she’s just dragged out, and it’s just not even funny. Like, bro, ‘Think U The S**t’ is from January. You’re going to post a piece of s**t cake to announce something that’s good news for you? But it is kind of a compliment because you’re talking about something that’s supposed to be a fun moment for you and you’re making it about me… again.”

Latto Adds “Chicken Grease” To Her New Album After A Boatload Of Fan Requests

Latto finally dropped off her third studio album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea, this past Friday, August 9. So far, the record has been doing fairly well in terms of sales and reviews are positive for the most part. As it stands, it should move around 27,000 units, which is good enough for a top 20 debut on the Billboard Hot 200. Fans have really been messing with album; however, they were slightly disappointed. When she teased the project with the trailer a little bit ago, there was a snippet that everyone was digging heavily.

It includes a sample of T.I.’s 2003 smash record, “24’s”. So, when Sugar Honey Iced Tea hit streaming and they saw it wasn’t there, fans were quite upset. However, the mob is now subdued because Latto put out the track now known as “Chicken Grease”. The song is on the newest version of the album, which is now discs. Now, instead of 17 cuts, there are 22 records. Joining “Chicken Grease” are “Put It On Da Floor”, its remix, as well as “Sunday Service” and its additional version. You can check out Latto’s spin of this trap classic with the audio link down below.

Latto dropped Sugar Honey Iced Tea on Friday, featuring collaborations with Young Nudy, Hunxho, Coco Jones, Megan Thee Stallion, Ciara, Mariah the Scientist, Teezo Touchdown, Cardi B, and Flo Milli. “I feel like what I’m doing has not been done before, so let’s start there. [Aesthetically], I’ve been pulling from Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, and Lil’ Kim,” she explained of the album, as caught by VIBE. “[Musically], I’ve been pulling from Kelis, but obviously with a Southern hip-hop twist. They have very feminine energy, but masculine in the sense of confidence. I feel like they was boss bi**hes. It just gave ‘I’m that girl.’ When you hear and see them in that prime era, it gave ‘I’m here to stay.’”

Latto Revealed When She’s Releasing The T.I.-Sampling Song She Teased Ahead Of Her New Album

In the trailer for her new album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea, Latto shared a snippet of a song sampling hometown hero T.I.’s 2003 breakout hit “24’s,” but when the album actually dropped last Friday (August 9), fans were disappointed to learn that the song wasn’t actually on the album. And while the album as a whole turned out to be delightful, garnering critical praise and impressive streaming numbers, there were still plenty of listeners who wanted to know where Latto’s “24’s” remake actually went.

Well, it sounds like Latto has seen their messages — actually, there’s a guarantee she’s seen at least one — and finally responded with a release date for the song, which is called “Chicken Grease.” It’s actually been added to the album, appearing on the “disc two” segment that contains the street anthems “Put It On Da Floor” and “Sunday Service” and their respective remixes. Fans are rejoicing that the song — which appeared as though it might have been held back for some reason — is finally out.

Some fans, however, are reading into the new lyrics, trying to determine if it contains more shots at Ice Spice, with whom Latto had a short-lived and uneventful feud ahead of their albums’ releases.

You can listen to “Chicken Grease” below.

Latto Hilariously Curves Fan During “Sugar Honey Iced Tea” Release Party

Latto hilariously curved a hopeful fan who called her “bae” at her album release party for Sugar Honey Iced Tea over the weekend. In a clip going viral on social media, the man attempts to get the rapper’s attention to her dismay. “Bae??” she remarks back at him before going on about her business. When Hollywood Unlocked posted the video on Instagram, fans shared plenty of jokes at the fan’s expense.

“My boy turned the camera around and looked like Nick Cannon in Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” one user wrote. Another added: “He look like the 1 black video game character in the 90s.” One more fan wrote: “Feel like harassment when you not attracted to them.”

Latto’s Giant Inflatable Booty Greets Guests At Album Release Party

Last week, Latto finally dropped her eagerly anticipated third studio LP, Sugar Honey Iced Tea. So far, the project has been a tremendous success. It’s even earned the Atlanta MC her very first No. 1 on the Apple Music album chart. Listeners agree that it was worth the wait, and puts her growth as an artist on full display. Evidently, however, bars aren’t the only thing Latto’s shown off as of late.

To celebrate the arrival of her new album, Latto hosted a release party in her hometown on Friday night. Before attendees even walked into Cascade, they were greeted by a huge inflatable version of her backside, cheetah print panties and all. She shared various photos and clips from the evening on Instagram last night, leaving her followers in awe.

Inside the event, Latto rocked a pair of Apple Bottom jeans with a bright red halter top and sneakers, inspired by New New from ATL. She even paid tribute to the iconic character by recreating some of her most memorable moments. The “Big Mama” performer was joined by countless supporters and peers, including Yung Miami, Saucy Santana, Mariah The Scientist, and more. Of course, fans are praising Latto for her creativity, and for leaning into things haters have clowned her for in the past.

“I like how she takes the weird ish haters say about her and put it on wax and in her looks,” one fan writes. “I know leopard print hates to see Latto coming,” another jokes. Uproxx cover star Latto’s celebration of Atlanta is on full display. Yesterday (August 9), the “Big Mama” rapper invited fans to attend her Sugar Honey Iced Tea album release party at an Atlanta cultural staple.

While attendees were forming special moments inside of Cascade, it is the skating rink’s entryway that truly stole the show. Just as guests made their way into the space, a giant inflatable of Latto’s butt was seen towering over all who dared to walk by. Supporters immediately took to social media to share clips of the blow-up (view on example here).

The creation was impressively accurate as far as replicas go. It even included a modified version of Latto’s infamous leopard panties (that nearly racked in six figures on eBay). However, there was one notable adjustment to the inflatable—two hard to miss tattoos. As to not get the figure confused with anyone else, the maker embroidered Latto’s name on each cheek.

Inside the party, Latto kept it modest, dressed in a red halter top, Apple Bottoms jeans, and sneakers as she pulled inspiration from Lauren London’s ATL character New New.

There are infinite ways to promote an album, but an inflatable of your Georgia peach by far takes the cake.

Latto Celebrates Earning Her First Apple Music No. 1 With “Sugar Honey Iced Tea”

Yesterday, Latto unleashed her third studio album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea. So far, the project has been well-received, with many calling it her best work yet. She’s even been dubbed the “female Drake,” as fans note similarities between their sounds. As fans continue to sound off about the project on social media, Latto has taken to X to celebrate her success.

The Atlanta hitmaker replied to a post by Chart Data, which announced that the album has earned her a No. 1 spot on the Apple Music album chart for the first time in her career. “Number one, we did it yo!” she shouts in a clip, popping a bottle of champagne. Fans certainly can’t blame Latto for being excited, especially considering all the praise she’s receiving online.

Latto Pops A Bottle Amid New Album Success

Amid the flood of compliments, however, some listeners have taken the opportunity to point out some apparent jabs on the album. Fans think she took a shot at Ice Spice on “S/O To Me,” for example, with the line “Ice is just water when it melts.” This is no surprise considering the two femcees have been dissing each other for a while. Nicki Minaj, Coi Leray, and more are also suspected to be on the receiving end of some shade.

While listeners still have plenty to digest following the release of Latto’s album, it’s not the only new music they’ve heard from her as of late. Drake also took fans by surprise by delivering 100 gigabytes of previously unreleased material earlier this week. This included a track featuring Latto, “Housekeeping Knows,” which is part of a 100 GIGS three-pack that just hit streaming services today. What do you think of Latto’s new album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea? What about her going No. 1 on the Apple Music album chart for the first time in her career?
