Drake Becomes First Artist To Hit 100 Billion Streams On Spotify

Drake has made history on Spotify by becoming the first artist to achieve 100 billion streams on the platform. He has amassed the figure with 78,140,542 monthly listeners after a highly publicized feud with Kendrick Lamar that saw him drop several popular diss tracks. They include “Family Matters,” “The Heart Part 6,” and more. Additionally, he recently teamed up with Sexyy Red for the single, “U My Everything.”

When Kurrco shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), plenty of his fans brought up the feud with Lamar. One user wrote: “Lmao [laughing emoji] man diss Spotify for now giving artist what they deserved, still couldn’t stop him from getting a billi [fire emojis] haters going hate.” Another added: “Drake gave a career to Kanye and Kendrick, metro and future and is too much above the Rap Game and it will never change until he retires, even these worst sounds are better than some of your favorite rappers here he just the goat  I don’t even need to justify myself anymore.”

Drake Accepts Billboard Music Award

As for the beef with Lamar, it began when the Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers rapper dissed Drake on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That,” earlier this year. In the following weeks the two each fired off several diss tracks aimed at one another. “Family Matters” alone notched Drake 75 million streams. Lamar made waves when he went back to back with the releases of “Meet The Grahams” and “Not Like Us.”

When Will Normani’s New Album ‘Dopamine’ Be On Spotify?

normani

Dopamine, the solo debut from former Fifth Harmony member Normani, is due to release soon, after months — years, really — of buildup. The New Orleans native has had a long, winding road to get to this point, and now that it’s here, fans can’t wait for the opportunity to stream her first complete body of work as a solo artist. But, when will the album, which has 13 tracks featuring Cardi B, Gunna, and James Blake, be available to stream on DSPs like Apple Music and Spotify?

With a due date of June 14, Dopamine should be streaming at midnight, Eastern time (9 PM Pacific). There’s no reason to believe that the album will be pushed back, and after a rollout that has included an airtight rollout with a short film, singles like “1:59” and “Candy Paint,” and striking art direction that no doubt took months to pull off, you can bet Normani won’t fumble at the one-yard line.

In a recent interview, Normani reflected on her time in the now-defunct girl group Fifth Harmony, likening it to a jail sentence. “We just continued to do shows, and I was fearing for my life,” she said, recalling a period after an interview when crazed fans of her bandmate Camila Cabello sent her death threats over a misperceived interview quote. “But they continued to put me out there on the stage. It was pretty much like, ‘The show goes on’.” Now that she’s on her own, though, she’s free to say what she wants — and make the music that makes her happy.

Dopamine is out on 6/14 via RCA.

Kendrick Lamar Continues To Break Spotify Records As “Not Like Us” Hits Monumental Milestone

Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” is barely a month old, and yet it already feels like it’s broken every Spotify rap song record under the sun as far as streaming numbers go. Moreover, you’ve probably seen this headline a lot, and it’s because people can’t get enough of this Drake diss and are looking forward to more moments with it. After all, K.Dot will likely premiere this song live in Los Angeles for his “Pop Out” Juneteenth concert, and we’re sure that if he plays it, the energy will be astounding. Anticipation for it, plus it being such a catchy song despite its subject matter, are some factors as to why it became the fastest rap song in Spotify history to surpass 300 million streams on the platform (35 days).

Of course, this might paint this rap battle as a clear victory, but both Drake and Kendrick Lamar fans have arguments for it being much closer than some folks give it credit for. Even though some people think that The Boy is acting deludedly by calling K.Dot a “one-trick pony” with his latest IG troll, his disses did contain more sharp writing than some expected. Regardless, it’s clear that numbers-wise, there is definitely a first place finish with “Not Like Us.” But as rap beef, discussion, and the genre’s artistry proves time and time again, numbers don’t really matter at the end of the day.

Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” Is Still A Nonstop Record-Breaker

Well, unless Kendrick Lamar is your GOAT, in which case you’ve never cared more about numbers. But light hypocrisy and confirmation bias aside, the acclaim and success behind “Not Like Us” is one of the most astonishing and unlikely hits of hip-hop’s 2024. In fact, it’s the principal driving factor behind this year in particular perhaps going down as Kendrick’s biggest streaming year of his career so far. We’ll see if this ends up being the case by the time December rolls around.

Actually, the new album rumors are rampant, and while it’s tough to call how fans will perceive this move after the Drake beef, they will likely celebrate its purely hypothetical announcement regardless. Maybe Kendrick Lamar really did just want to pop out and will use his Juneteenth show to wrap things up and leave us waiting for his next project. Or he’s about to have one of the most dominant and eventful years any rapper has ever had. Ever! And so could Drizzy if he drops something long-form, so we’ll see whether or not this dead horse is one we’ll be beating all the way to New Year’s.

Eminem’s “Houdini” Massive First Week Streaming Numbers Revealed

Earlier this year, Eminem appeared at the NFL Draft in his home town of Detroit. He took the stage alongside song Detroit Lions football legends and used the opportunity to make a big announcement. He revealed that he had a new album dropping later this year. Long time fans of the rapper were thrilled to find out that it was called The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace). To further promote the album he even took out an obituary for his notorious alter-ego in a Detroit newspaper last month.

Last week, Em shared the lead single to the new album “Houdini.” The song came in on a wave of hype and left fans pretty divided. While some appreciated Em’s return to the antics of his Slim Shady character, others felt his rhymes and punchlines were more dated than ever. Regardless of the song’s reception, plenty of people were streaming it. First week numbers on the song just came in and they’re massive. “Houdini” racked up more than 56 million streams in its first week alone, which is the second most for a rap song in the platform’s history. Unsurprisingly, the one song it lags behind is “Not Like Us.” The Kendrick Lamar’s Drake diss track took over the rap world earlier this year. Check out the impressive streaming numbers on “Houdini” below.

Eminem’s “Houdini” Piling Up Streams

Unsurprisingly, the song is also expected to make a splash on the Hot 100. It’s debut on the charts will be revealed next week and projections have it debuting as high as #2. Post Malone and Morgan Wallen’s “I Had Some Help,” the song that also kept “Not Like Us” off the top spot for the past two weeks, is expected to remain at number one.

What do you think of Eminem’s new song totaling more than 56 million streams in its first week on Spotify alone? Do you think the song is closer to a return to form, or a dated imitation of Em’s classic work? Let us know in the comment section below.

Billionaire Spotify CEO Claims the Cost of Making “Content” Is “Close to Zero” and Sparks Immediate Backlash

Billionaire Spotify CEO Claims the Cost of Making “Content” Is “Close to Zero” and Sparks Immediate Backlash

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek faced significant backlash after claiming on X (formerly Twitter) that the cost of creating content is “close to zero.” Let’s take a moment to think about that. This guy is a billionaire who built an empire primarily from a streaming platform that pays most artists pennies, and he dares to…. Okay, let’s get on with what he said:

“Today, with the cost of creating content being close to zero, people can share an incredible amount of content. This has sparked my curiosity about the concept of long shelf life versus short shelf life. While much of what we see and hear quickly becomes obsolete, there are timeless ideas or even pieces of music that can remain relevant for decades or even centuries.”

Ek continued reflecting on enduring ideas: “For example, we’re witnessing a resurgence of Stoicism, with many of Marcus Aurelius’s insights still resonating thousands of years later. This makes me wonder: what are the most unintuitive, yet enduring ideas that aren’t frequently discussed today but might have a long shelf life? Also, what are we creating now that will still be valued and discussed hundreds or thousands of years from today?”

Musicians and music fans quickly criticized Ek’s remarks. Composer Tim Prebble responded, “Music will still be valued in a hundred years. Spotify won’t. It will only be remembered as a bad example of a parasitic tool for extracting value from other peoples music. (or ‘content’ as some grifters like to call it).”

Other users echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the low payouts Spotify provides to artists per stream. Primal Scream bassist Simone Marie Butler bluntly commented, “Fuck off you out of touch billionaire.” The Future of Music Coalition added, “It actually can still be expensive to make records, especially if you care about paying your collaborators fairly. Many musicians are skilled at cutting corners to accomplish their creative goals within limited budgets.”

For the record, he has since clarified his statements in a follow-up post on X, but what do you think? Is the damage done, or not?

Drake’s “Push-Ups” Hits Impressive New Streaming Milestone

The beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar has been a massive commercial pull. The back and forth spawned multiple top 10 hits, numerous 20 hits, and even a few number ones. The two songs that kicked things off, “First Person Shooter” last year and “Like That” earlier this year both debuted at the top spot on the Hot 100. The former spent multiple weeks at the top spot and is still just outside the top 10 on this week’s edition. “Euphoria,” “meet the grahams,” “Family Matters,” and “Push-Ups” are all also still included on this weeks Hot 100.

It’s that final track “Push-Ups” that has reached a new milestone this week. The song peaked at number 17 on the Hot 100 and currently sits at number 74 in its 5th week. In the meantime, it’s also racked up tons of streams on Spotify. The song just became Drake’s most recent to hit 100 million streams. While the incredible achievement is rare for most artists, Drizzy has an astonishingly large collection of them. “Push-Ups” is his 248th song to reach 100 million streams, which is more than double any other rapper has on the platform. Unsurprisingly, Drizzy currently sits as the #7 most-streamed artist on Spotify this month.

Drake’s Incredible Streaming Achievements

The achievements of nearly every other song in the beef are dwarfed by Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” It became yet another song to debut at the top spot on the Hot 100 last month. It’s stuck around in the top 5 ever since and is expected to remain there for at least the next two weeks. It also broke multiple records, even ones held by Drake, for its Spotify streams in the first 24 hours.

What do you think of “Push-Ups” hitting 100 million streams on Spotify in the wake of Drake’s beef with Kendrick Lamar? Do you think it’s impressive that he has more than twice as many songs hitting that milestone as any of his contemporaries? Let us know in the comment section below.

When Will Eminem’s New Song ‘Houdini’ Be On Spotify?

eminem

Earlier this week, Eminem announced “Houdini,” the first single from Eminem’s upcoming album, The Death Of Slim Shady, with the help of illusionist David Blaine. The single will be his second of the year, following his appearance on the Lyrical Lemonade standout, “Doomsday 2.” So, when will fans be able to hear the self-declared Rap God’s latest?

With a due date of May 31, “Houdini” will available to stream on DSPs like Spotify at midnight ET, 9 PM PT. While some artists have been inconsistent with getting their streams up on time, Eminem certainly is not one of them.

Em’s been teasing The Death Of Slim Shady for a bit, trolling fans with a phony album announcement on April Fools’ Day. Then, earlier this month, he put out an obituary for his controversial alter ego in his local newspaper. “His complex and tortured existence has come to a close,” it read. “And the legacy he leaves behind is no closer to resolution than the manner in which this character departed this world.”

The album will be Eminem’s first since Music To Be Murdered By from 2020, so anticipation is certainly high for The Death Of Slim Shady, even if the character will be missed.

“Houdini” is due on 5/31 through Shady Records, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope Records.

When Will Shaboozey’s ‘Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going’ Be On Spotify?

In Shaboozey’s two-minute album trailer for Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going, a man is all alone in the country, except, try as he might, he can’t comically escape Shaboozey’s omnipresence. Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” is on every radio. A flyer for a Shaboozey tour is on the post. There’s Shaboozey again, photographed in the newspaper. Finally, Shaboozey shows up in the flesh and politely waves at the man, who is likely the only person not looking forward to a Shaboozey album.

Kendrick Lamar’s “euphoria” Has Sold Over 1 Million Units in the U.S.

Kendrick Lamar Headlines Lollapalooza's 2023 Lineup

Kendrick Lamar continues to have a good few months in sales. His “Euphoria” disco track has officially sold one million units. According to ChartData, this is Lamar’s third song in 2024 to be platinum eligible, following “Like That” and “Not Like Us.”

In recent news, Spotify has unveiled the 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs of the streaming era, from 2015 to the present, as part of its Spotify CLASSICS catalog program. Topping the list is Kendrick Lamar’s influential track “Alright.”

The newest iteration of Spotify CLASSICS, a celebration of catalog music chosen by Spotify’s North American editorial team, highlights major hits such as Drake’s “God’s Plan,” Future’s “Mask Off,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble,” and “WAP” by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion.

Spotify’s hip-hop editorial team undertook the ambitious task of reviewing thousands of songs to compile this definitive list. Unlike other rankings, Spotify CLASSICS is entirely qualitative, focusing on the quality, impact, replay value, influence, and cultural significance of each track. The list reflects the editors’ music and cultural expertise, rather than being driven by streaming data, meaning that massive streaming numbers were not a prerequisite for inclusion.
