Ab-Soul Demands Some Attention For His New Mixtape, Saying Overlooking Him Is ‘Unbecoming Of The Culture’

For all the attention that has been lavished on Top Dawg Entertainment products Doechii, Schoolboy Q, and SZA this year (not to mention former TDE signee Kendrick Lamar), there’s one member of the South LA crew who feels that his work hasn’t gotten the love it deserves. Ab-Soul’s new mixtape, Soul Burger, dropped in November, just ahead of the unofficial annual entertainment industry shutdown for the holidays, but he’s still given it impressive support, with videos for “All That” and “California Dream” promoting the project before and after its release.

But he wants more, as he wrote on Twitter, sharing his disappointment with rap fans for not talking it up more — especially since it includes some historical moments for longtime participants, such as the collaboration between Lupe Fiasco and TDE after Lupe’s less-than-favorable commentary about Kendrick Lamar.

“THIS MAY BE DISTASTEFUL FOR ME TO SAY ON MY OWN, GIVEN THE INSATIABLE STATE OF SOCIAL MEDIA,” he wrote. “BUT, F*CC IT. “SOUL BURGER” IS A PHENOMENAL BODY OF WORK. I PUT IT ALL ON THE TABLE. STOP PRETENDING TO OVERLOOK ME. ITS UNBECOMING OF THE CULTURE.”

Soul was one of the many TDE artists and special guests who took the stage during the label’s annual holiday concert in Watts this year, where he reminded attendees that there’s more to TDE than the big hitmakers. Ab-Soul may not have the accolades, but he certainly has the artistry, and it’s high time (heh) he gets some credit for his work.

Ab-Soul And Vince Staples Grab A Real Soul Burger In Their ‘California Dream’ Video

Ab-Soul’s new mixtape is called Soul Burger, so it’s fitting that he, Vince Staples, and Kamm Carson linked up at Los Angeles burger joint Love Hour to shoot the video for “California Dream.” Love Hour has become a fixture of LA nightlife; the bar has become one of Koreatown’s hottest event spots, while the food service window sees booming business slanging burgers and fries. The video is simple: the three rappers and their crew post up in the parking lot and rap their verses, which include a reminder from Staples that “I’m in the trenches, but I grew up walkin’ distance from the beach.”

Meanwhile, Soul’s wordplay-packed verse sees him reminiscing about his come-up alongside the TDE family: “Me and D was in the doghouse on top of the VIP / So it’s no coincidence my insignia in TDE.” Kamm Carson closes out the song with an acapella verse, elaborating on the trio’s shared South LA upbringing and nodding to the inspiration behind Soul’s new mixtape. “Age thirteen, used to think murder was make-believe / Role models Crippin’ like DoeBurger and Killa Dee / Play football or you bangin’, you signed to the streets.”

Hottest Hip-Hop Albums & Songs Of November 2024

Overall, November 2024 was a great month of hip-hop albums, and it was also a month that contained some phenomenal singles. Of course, Ab-Soul, FERG, and many others came through with some projects that fans were certainly expecting. However, it was Kendrick Lamar who completely shook things up when he decided to drop the album GNX out of nowhere. It is a project that has subsequently given way to a tour, which is set to begin in April. Meanwhile, on the singles front, we got some incredible stuff from a plethora of artists, including MIKE, Hi-Tech, and many others. So without further ado, here are our favorites from the last 30 days.

Kendrick Lamar Shouts Out Ab-Soul’s New Album On Social Media

Kendrick Lamar returned to his burner Instagram account, @jojoruski, to shout out his Black Hippy partner Ab-Soul’s new album, Soul Burger. This took a lot of fans by surprise thanks to K.Dot’s not-so-active social media presence, and because of the conversation around his support of other artists. If you weren’t already aware, the whole Drake battle situation caused many to criticize how Kendrick seemingly doesn’t do much to promote the music and moves of his peers. There’s a whole debate around that which we don’t need to get into here, as you probably already know what’s up. Still, to make a long story short, it depends on how much stock you put into social media activity to begin with.

Nevertheless, Kendrick Lamar actually fought back against these narratives thanks to his shoutout of Doechii’s new album, Alligator Bites Never Heal. As such, this marks the second TDE-affiliated nod on his social media as of late, although that album appeared on his main page rather than his Finsta. That opened up a conversation as well, but its exhausting nature made both sides land on pretty much the same conclusion.

Kendrick Lamar Salutes Ab-Soul’s Soul Burger

Regardless of all that Kendrick Lamar discussion, you shouldn’t need him to tell you that you should listen to the new Ab-Soul album, Soul Burger. It’s a very solid and compelling effort from the veteran lyricist, pairing dizzying rhymes and melodic curiosities with stark, varied, and engaging production across various hip-hop styles. In fact, the aforementioned Doechii makes an appearance on the cut “I, Myself & Me,” which is a surefire highlight on the project. If you need a superstar to determine your listening habits, that’s on you. But if you want these artists to get the most attention they can, then it’s understandable to want more from the pgLang creative.

Of course, Kendrick Lamar barely has to do anything to get praise of his own. Two of his Drake diss tracks from this year, “Not Like Us” and the Future and Metro Boomin collab “Like That,” made for seven Grammy nominations for next year. But some folks hope the Compton legend would open his mouth more for his other colleagues, so this Ab-Soul shoutout is a welcome practice.

Ab-Soul Muses About Self-Confidence, Fame, & Expectations On Powerful Doechii Collab “I, Myself & Me”

Ab-Soul’s whole mission was to embody the spirit of his late friend “Doe Burger,” who tragically lost his life in 2021 on Soul Burger. It’s the latest album from one of the longest tenured TDE members and in speaking with Billboard, he explains just how important Doe was and still is to him and this tape. “We were yin and yang in a lot of ways. I just really wanted to channel him the best I could to keep him with me. I say this often, but I don’t know how I’m doing this without him. My only logical explanation is that he must be with me,” Ab-Soul said. “This is an album I feel like he wanted me to make. He was a true tastemaker. I valued his opinion. A real artist in his own right. I just really hope he would be proud of it.”

We think “Doe” would be ecstatic if he heard this, especially because Ab-Soul crushes it on his collaboration with Doechii, “I, Myself & Me.” His non-related brother always wanted him to create more danceable tunes, which there are on Soul Burger. However, it still sticks true to Ab’s roots with thought-provoking and detailed listening experiences. “I, Myself & Me” is one of those, with the California native spilling his pain and thoughts onto this powerful and emotional cut. He expresses a lot of self-doubt, stresses about the industry and its vices, and wrestles with the expectations laid upon him. However, perhaps through the spirit of “Doe Burger” he shows some signs of resiliency. It’s maybe the best track of the week and one of the best of the year, so please spin it below.

TDE’s Ab-Soul has returned with Soul Burger, his first album since 2022’s Herbert. This project is a tribute to his childhood friend DoeBurger, who passed in 2021 and encouraged Ab-Soul to make upbeat music for fans to enjoy live. Throughout the album, Doe narrates, inspiring Ab-Soul to push forward.

The 15-track album features a lineup of high-profile collaborators, including Vince Staples, JID, Lupe Fiasco, Doechii, Ty Dolla $ign, and Thirsty P. Production comes from 9th Wonder, Kal Banx, TaeBeast, Terrace Martin, and ScHoolboy Q, among others. Soul Burger blends Ab-Soul’s lyrical depth with dynamic beats, promising a celebratory experience that reflects Doe’s influence.

Ab-Soul Slices And Dices His “On The Radar” Freestyle Ahead Of “Soul Burger”

Ab-Soul is just two full days away from releasing his sixth LP titled Soul Burger. The project will carry 15 songs and will arrive on November 8 to be exact. The feature list is one to behold as well with Vince Staples, fellow TDE signee Doechii, Ty Dolla $ign, JID, and Lupe Fiasco, leading the way. Those are just a few of them though, so prepare yourself for sure. The 2013 XXL Freshman will be following up his comeback album HERBERT from 2022, which came after a six-year drought. Overall, TDE has been having an unbelievable year with the aforementioned Doechii, ScHoolboy Q, Zacari, and SiR also delivering some memorable releases.

It’s going to difficult for Ab-Soul due to the sheer artistry of those projects. But he’s definitely got more than enough talent in the tank to compete with his counterparts. The singles have been highly desirable with “Crazier” probably being our favorite out of the bunch. They are all a great refresher of what Soul brings to the table, so we are incredibly pumped for what’s possibly in store. Speaking of staying ready, the veteran MC has been popping up on a couple of freestyles lately.

Ab-Soul Has Fans Amped For His Next Album

One of his most recent came in the form of his respective verse on second-ever XXL‘s Cypher Lab. Him, A$AP Ferg, and Sauce Walka all brought their A game and also talked about the lack of respect for lyricism in hip-hop. The latter is something that Ab-Soul has in great supply, and he displayed that on his first “On The Radar” freestyle. He makes light work of JAY-Z’s “Squeeze 1st,” which he perhaps selected on purpose. He raps over an interpolation of that instrumental on the lead single for Soul Burger, “Squeeze 1St 2.” The lyrics are much different on this off-the-dome performance as he namedrops the album, Doechii’s new mixtape, and labels himself as “Marshall Mathers with melanin.” Check out the fire appearance above.

What are your thoughts on Ab-Soul’s “On The Radar” freestyle? Does this have you more excited for Soul Burger, why or why not? Where do you rank him amongst the rest of the TDE lineup? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Ab-Soul. Finally, stay with us for everything else going on in the music world.

Ab-Soul Enlists Doechii, Vince Staples, & Blxst On “Soul Burger”

Ab-Soul released the official tracklist to his anticipated new album, Soul Burger, on Tuesday morning (Nov.5) across his social media accounts, ahead of its release on Friday (Nov. 8). The TDE rap star revealed the 15-song tracklist will include labelmates Doechii and Punch, L.A.’s finest Ty Dolla $ign, Blxst, and Vince Staples, the real spitters Lupe Fiasco and JID, and surprise guests Fre$h, Asia Holiday, Khamm Carson, and Notorious N.I.Q. Previously released singles “Crazier” and “All That” feature JID and JasonMartin, formerly Problem. Soul shared the cover art for the upcoming album alongside its release date back on October 17.

Soul Burger ends the 37-year-old Carson native’s two-year hiatus following 2022’s critically acclaimed HERBERT, which includes the hit song “Do Better.” Souloho began promoting the upcoming album last month with studio clips posted on Instagram featuring well-known L.A. radio personality DJ Hed. As he captioned his recent post, “Sumthins in da water,” Soul hints at award-winning bars. On Halloween, Soul crowned himself the “B.O.A.T.” (Best Of All Time) in a newly released Sauce Walka and FERG-featured interview and Cypher for XXL.

Ab-Soul’s Soul Burger: Features & Artwork

Soul Burger is the third album released on Top Dawg Entertainment in 2024. Punch, TDE’s co-president, collaborated with Soul on the upcoming song “Peace” for the first time in a decade after frequently working together from 2008 to 2015. Occasionally, Punch’s introspective style has appeared on TDE albums. Before the album, Soul reunited with rap group Black Hippy (Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q) in July to perform at Kendrick Lamar’s iconic Pop-Out event. In the Big 3 beef between J.Cole, Drake, and Kendrick, fans believed Soul aligned himself with K.Dot and caused a rift between him and Cole.

Soul addressed the J. Cole beef rumors in October. He focused on his friendship with the Dreamville creator and what really happened with their collaborative 2024 song “Pi.“ “Cole is really the homie,” Soul tells DJ Hed and Gina Views.  “Everybody be saying we use the word ‘friend’ and ‘homie’ loosely… but Cole’s a good dude. He’s been concerned about my eyes, my diet.” Share your thoughts on Souloho’s upcoming album in the comments section down below. Additionally, keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Ab-Soul Shared The Tracklist For ‘Soul Burger,’ Which Features Doechii, Lupe Fiasco, Vince Staples, And More

Ab-Soul’s new mixtape Soul Burger is dropping this Friday, November 8, and today, the Carson rapper has revealed the tracklist, which contains some real surprises and treats for rap fans. Soul — who’s been embroiled in some minor J. Cole-related controversy, but quickly dispelled rumors of any beef between the two — has already released two songs from the project. While “All That” sees Soul teaming up with a different Compton rapper from the one he’s usually associated with, “Crazier” further undermines the belief in friction between Dreamville and TDE.

While some of the guests on Soul Burger seem like no-brainers — specifically, labelmate and current heir apparent to rap’s women’s division crown, Doechii, and fellow West Coasters Blxst, Ty Dolla Sign, and Vince Staples — one that’s sure to raise a few eyebrows is Lupe Fiasco. Now, if there’s anyone rap fans think actually has a disagreement with Soul’s Black Hippy bandmate Kendrick Lamar, it’s Lupe, who notoriously shaded the Compton-bred Pulitzer winner on Twitter in 2018, apparently in a bout of jealousy over the attention K. Dot’s received for his pen in the past few years. Of course, from a “bars only” standpoint, the combo of Ab-Soul and Lupe Fiasco only makes sense, as very few rappers in the world can keep up with either of them when they start really digging into their wordplay bags (and/or conspiracy theories). TDE President Punch is also featured on that song, which should help balance things out (and continue to remind fans that Punch is a very, very skilled wordsmith in his own right).

You can see the tracklist below.

Ab-Soul And JasonMartin Give A Lesson In LA Politics In Their Menacing ‘All That’ Video

It’s been remarked by both visitors and residents of Los Angeles that South LA is like a completely different country. The language, the customs, and the people are miles away — socially and geographically — from the glitz of Hollywood. As such, Ab-Soul and JasonMartin give a quick lesson in LA politics (with some help from Thirsty P) in their new video for “All That,” explaining the ins and outs of the culture. If you get it, you get it, and if you don’t… stay north of Pico.

Produced by frequent TDE collaborators Rascal and TaeBeast, “All That” features a rumbling beat and some head-spinning examples of LA slang and the two rappers’ always excellent wordplay. “All That” is the first single from Ab-Soul’s recently announced mixtape, Soul Burger, which has a November 8 release date. Soul Burger is a tribute to Soul’s childhood best friend, Doe Burger, who died in 2021. While Soul was normally known for introspective concepts and murky, slow-paced beats, Burger pushed Soul to make more upbeat music for fans to dance to at his shows.

Soul Burger will be Ab-Soul’s first full-length project since 2022’s Herbert, which itself was a return from a nearly six-year hiatus. It’s due on 11/8 via TDE.

You can watch Ab-Soul’s “All That” video featuring JasonMartin above.
