Saweetie is a woman of many talents. Over the weekend, she joined the women of the San Diego State University Diamonds dance squad during the homecoming game as they performed a routine to “My Type.”
Last month, Saweetie delivered her latest single, “IS IT THE WAY,” released via Warner Records. The track, which samples Jill Scott’s classic “The Way,” highlights Saweetie’s signature empowering verses, celebrating individuality and strength. Dedicated to women around the globe, “IS IT THE WAY” embraces the ICY Girl mentality that Saweetie has become known for.
The accompanying music video, directed by Tajana Tokyo, takes fans on a cinematic journey through the streets of London. With a sleek, icy-blue aesthetic, the visuals capture Saweetie’s bold fashion choices and unapologetic energy. Every scene exudes confidence, making it clear that this release begins an exciting new chapter for the artist.
Saweetie’s return comes after a whirlwind summer, and with “IS IT THE WAY,” she invites listeners into her world, blending personal style with a message of empowerment.
The last few years have seen a rise in rappers making more direct interpolations of older songs. Saweetie’s latest single, “Is It The Way,” samples Jill Scott’s classic neo-soul track “The Way,” from her 2001 debut album Who Is Jill Scott? She flips it drastically, turning it from a mid-tempo flirty love letter to a much more overtly raunchy track with a trap beat. She talks about her authenticity, her physical attractiveness, and sex. That is Saweetie’s M.O., and it has been since she debuted.
LL Cool J recently tapped Saweetie for his Q-Tip-produced comeback album, The FORCE. The track, “Proclivities,” is another raunchy cut that does not deal much in innuendo. Generally speaking, Saweetie is not one for metaphors, which is clear on this new single as well. In August, Saweetie made headlines for her roller-coaster relationship with YG. The two of them reportedly got into an altercation that necessitated police involvement to break up. Soon after, YG heavily implied that Saweetie cheated on him in an Instagram post (posting a lion and a cheetah emoji on his story, seemingly referring to her as a “lying cheater”), though the Compton rapper denied that was the case. The status of their relationship at this point is unclear. Based on their history, it does not seem that this song is about YG, to say the least. Perhaps they could both stand to learn something from Jill Scott’s music. Stream “Is It The Way” below.
Is it the way I handle business? (My business) Authentic with no gimmicks (Ooh) They talkin’, but I live it (Yeah) I get up back and flip it (Uh-huh) Singapore, Dubai, the only time you catch me trippin’, yeah (Pew) Ain’t no way (Yeah) Just ’cause I’m a player, baby, that don’t mean I play (Play) I know you a hater, see it written on your face (Face)
Say what you want to about Saweetie’s stop-and-start album rollout, but the Bay Area bombshell has been on a roll lately. After the UGK-inspired “Richtivities” rebooted the rollout, “Nani” has become a sleeper hit, landing placement in a number of high-profile syncs, while her feature on LL Cool J’s “Proclivities” gave her the co-sign from a hip-hop legend. She returns to her 808s-and-soul-samples bag — her most effective mode, in this writer’s opinion — for “Is It The Way.” Pairing a trunk-rattling Texas beat with a loop from Jill Scott’s 2001 hit “The Way,” Saweetie contemplates all the attention she gets while combining the best parts of her last two singles.
In the video accompanying the song, Saweetie struts the streets of London, causing all the British boys’ heads to turn in her haute couture looks, which include a truly stupendous pair of heels and Union Jack-bearing short shorts that just scream “Spice Girls.” The whole video is a throwback to the British R&B invasion of the early 2000s (think Craig David’s “Fill Me In”), which could provide a fruitful new avenue for the particular form of millennial nostalgia that Saweetie has embraced throughout her career. The trendsetter has been making a solid push for a comeback, and with a few more tracks like this, the turnaround could truly be just around the corner.
310babii is continuing to build on the success of his viral single “soak city”. The Inglewood, California native has definitely put any and all one-hit wonder claims to shame, especially since dropping other tracks like “pink whitney”, the “soak city” remix with OhGeesy & BlueBucksClan, and now “rock your hips”. The latter is one of his 2024 singles, as well as one of the lead off tracks for his February 23 LP, nights and weekends. The project went on to feature multiple California natives such as Kalan.FrFr, 03 Greedo, Tyga, Blueface, and more. Now, that West Coast collaboration portfolio is growing for 310babii with the release of the “rock your hips” remake with Saweetie.
The 18-year-old didn’t stop there, though. He dropped this track with several other renditions of this remix. You can also bump “sped up”, “slowed down”, “instrumental”, and a clean version. The “rock your hips” collab also has a fun and quirky music video, with 310babii learning how to play golf. His coach instructs that he needs to “rock your hips like Shakira” to get a good swing off the tee box. When he does this, he gets a hole and one immediately. There’s some choreography during Saweetie’s part which could led to a dance craze on TikTok. If you’re looking for fun summer song to bump in the whip or at outdoor parties, then “rock your hips” is for you. You can check out the remix with Saweetie with the music video link below.

After police were called to the rappers’ home over a loud argument, fans were convinced Saweetie cheated when YG shared a cryptic post on Instagram. Early this week, TMZ reported that YG and Saweetie’s neighbors called the police on them over worries of a domestic dispute, which was supposedly caused by “cell phone drama.” A day later, YG posted an Instagram Story slide consisting of two emoji: A lion and a cheetah.
Fans ran with the theory that the emoji represented homonyms for “lyin’ cheater” (get it?), assuming that this meant Saweetie had been caught stepping out on her man. However, YG told fans to “stop the kap” on Twitter, explaining, “I was at the zoo with my kids.” Backing up his claim were more slides capturing his kids enjoying a day at the Los Angeles Zoo (a delightful day out, although I wouldn’t recommend it in 90-degree weather). YG later deleted his tweet, but it was screencapped by multiple fan accounts.
This past Saturday, August 10, YG and Saweetie were causing a massive ruckus in their Los Angeles-area home. TMZ Hip Hop got information on their fight on Monday, and it had to do with some sort of cell phone drama. Police officers disclosed that information to the source thanks to them being called to the scene by a neighbor presumably. It never got into a physical altercation, but it was clearly a nasty situation for the recently rekindled couple. Authorities did remain on the premises until everything between YG and Saweetie settled down.
So, yes, the exact details of the shouting match were pretty scant. However, according to some new developments from HipHopDX, we may know even more. Yesterday, August 13, YG posted a cryptic series of emojis on an Instagram Story that has since been deleted. However, they snapped a screenshot of it and it includes a lion “” and a cheetah “”.
Given the recent debacle, some fans were able to piece together that the JUST RE’D UP 3 MC is suggesting that Saweetie has not been faithful. Specifically, she’s been lying and cheating on him. Fans were giving him props in the comments section under the repost from The Shade Room. “Ngl that’s kind of clever ”, one user admits. “Somebody be lying & cheatin “, another recognizes. Other were making quick-witted puns. “He moving on to cougars only.” Obviously, this more so gossip right now, but fans might be on to something here.
What are your thoughts on YG suggesting that Saweetie has been cheating and lying to him? Do you think this is what caused their domestic fight the other day, why or why not? Who do you think Saweetie was getting with? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Over the weekend, YG and Saweetie showed that there is trouble in paradise when the couple had a vicious verbal altercation, causing the authorities to be called to their Los Angeles home.
The L.A. Sheriff’s Dept. reported that an argument between the two rappers got so loud Saturday afternoon that someone called them “out of concern”. Deputies arrived on the scene and separated YG and Saweetie just to find out that the couple got into a spat over cell phone drama.
The deputies determined that there was no physical violence, but there was obviously a very loud, boisterous argument. A noncriminal report was taken to document the incident, but no crimes were committed.
These two were originally confirmed as a dynamic duo back in April 2023 after being spotted hugged up at Coachella.
Neither YG or Saweetie have commented on the skirmish at their residence.
Former President Obama has shared his latest summer playlist, and of course, he’s all-in on Brat Summer too. This year’s list includes new fan favorites from the likes of Billie Eilish, Shaboozey, and of course, Charli XCX, but it also has quite a few throwbacks, as well. “No Diggity” from Blackstreet makes an appearance, as does “Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting” from jazz great Charles Mingus and “How Do U Want It” from the late, great Tupac Shakur.
But, a big part of Obama’s appeal has been that he’s an older guy who keeps up with the times, and as per usual, he certainly does seem to have his ear to the streets — or at least, the algorithms. From Billie Eilish’s new album, Hit Me Hard And Soft, he’s got “Chihiro”; from Charli XCX’s unlikely political favorite, “365.” Shaboozey’s J-Kwon-sampling “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” is a no-brainer, as is Tommy Richman’s “Million Dollar Baby.”
However, there are also some surprises here. Rising British rapper Enny appears with her 2023 single “Charge It,” as does Saweetie’s newest single, “My Best.” R&B stars H.E.R. and Cleo Sol both appear (both songs are throwbacks from their catalogs, with “Process” and “Why Don’t You” representing their respective artists). But lest you think that golden ear is turning to tin, Tems’ “Love Me Jeje” also appears to keep things up to date.
You can see Mr. Obama’s full summer playlist below.
With summer winding down, I wanted to share some songs that I’ve been listening to lately – and it wouldn’t be my playlist if it didn’t include an eclectic mix. I hope you find something new to listen to! pic.twitter.com/aL400Ctpde
California rap royalty Saweetie and YG could be experiencing trouble in paradise. According to TMZ, the couple’s neighbors called the police on them over worries of a domestic dispute on Saturday (August 10). The officers who arrived determined that their argument never got physical, despite being loud enough to worry the neighbors, and an incident report was filed after the couple had calmed down. According to that report, the fight had started over “phone drama.”
The couple was rumored to have broken up in January, when the Instagram gossip account TheShadeRoom reported that a source with knowledge of the situation had confirmed they agreed to part ways. However, they appeared to put that speculation to rest in March, when Saweetie popped out during YG and Tyga’s set at Rolling Loud California, exchanging some flirty words and gestures that suggested that they were either back together, or never broken up to begin with. Saweetie’s name also appears on the tracklist for YG’s upcoming album, Just Re’d Up 3, so they certainly appear to be on good enough terms to work together.
The two West Coast rappers had been dating for about a year; they were first linked in March 2023, when they were photographed on vacation getting fairly cozy. Since then, they’ve collaborated on multiple songs and even went on tour together with Tyga last fall.
YG and Saweetie, two California rappers and lovebirds, were reportedly getting into it recently. According to TMZ Hip Hop, authorities were called, presumably by a neighbor, due to hearing very audible screaming and shouting. It occurred inside their Los Angeles-area household this past Saturday, August 10. As soon as local police walked through the doors to their place, they immediately got involved, separating YG and Saweetie. The exact details of why they were fighting with each other are unknown. However, what we do know is that it had something to do with each other’s cell phones.
Obviously, that could mean anything, so we will leave it up to you to debate what it was in relation to. Thankfully, though, police say that there was zero physical contact between them. Of course, loud shouting matches are never fun, but at least it was verbal only. After learning what they could, the authorities stayed with the MC couple until things settled down entirely.
YG & Saweetie’s Rocky Relationship Hits Another Bump In The Road
In addition, the cops cited this as a noncriminal report, but they did so just to have something on file to go off of if things continue to get worse. Furthermore, no crimes were charged to each of them. This nasty fight comes in the middle of some big musical accomplishments for 2024. YG is getting ready to release is new album, JUST RE’D UP 3, a long-awaited sequel project in his longstanding mixtape series. It will arrive August 16. As for Saweetie, she is coming off a pretty stellar guest spot on LL COOL J’s recent “Proclivities” single which will land on the New Yorker’s September 6 LP, The FORCE.
