Tyler, The Creator Links Up With Sampha

Tyler, The Creator is an influential voice in rap music in pretty much every way someone can be. He’s loved by nearly every everyone else in the genre and is often seen handing out with fellow artists. Last month during Paris Fashion Week he showed up to perform for Pharrell’s debut as Head of Menswear at Louis Vuitton. That show was also attended by rappers like Jay-Z, Offset, Pusha T, and more. Just a few days ago Lil Yachty clarified that it was Tyler who inspired him to try a new sound on his psychedelic rock album Let’s Start Here earlier this year.

Now Tyler, The Creator is handing out with one of the most acclaimed and also most mysterious singers in R&B. Sampha isn’t one of the genre’s most popular voices necessarily but those in the know understand that his unique vocals have been used to soundtrack so many brilliant songs. Rappers like Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and Stormzy as well as fellow R&B singers like Solange and Alicia Keys have called on Sampha’s talents before. Yesterday, pictures hit the internet of Tyler and Sampha hanging out together. While they aren’t in a studio and there’s no official confirmation of new music it would certainly be a meeting of heavy-hitters.

Tyler, The Creator And Sampha Hanging Out

Tyler, The Creator has also had an eventful year musically. In March he released The Estate Sale a deluxe edition of his album Call me If You Get Lost from 2021. The new extended tracklist includes songs with A$AP Rocky, YG, and Vince Staples.

Tyler, The Creator hasn’t just been making waves with new music either. His Flower Boy single “See You Again” with Kali Uchis has long been a fan favored. Recently the song blew up on TikTok. That buzz caused it to soar to a new peak on the Hot 100 6 years after it was released. Last week Tyler celebrated the song reaching one billion streams on Spotify. Sampha Answered Repeated Requests For New Music By Returning With ‘Spirit 2.0,’ His First Single In Six Years

At long last, Sampha is back with new music of his own. While he’s made appearances on various hip-hop and R&B songs in recent years, notably by artists like Drake and Kendrick Lamar, today (June 28), Sampha has shared “Spirit 2.0,” his first solo single in six years.

On “Spirit 2.0,” Sampha delivers his signature melancholy vocals over a trippy, harpsichord-infused track.

“Waves will catch you / Light will catch you / Love will catch you / Spirit gon’ catch you,” he sings in the song’s chorus, reassuring the listener that whatever difficulties they’re facing will pass — even if those around you don’t know what exactly to say.

“It’s about the importance of connection to both myself and others, and the beauty and harsh realities of just existing,” said Sampha of the song in a statement. “It’s about acknowledging those moments when you need help – that requires real strength. I hope people can enjoy that feeling of someone being there for you, even if that person doesn’t have the answers. Just calling someone up without overthinking… letting go and just dancing.. wanting to see past the mundanity of things and appreciating the magic of it all, from birds’ nests to spaceships.”

Issa Rae Includes Thundercat, Raphael Saadiq, SiR, And Others In Her Favorite NPR Tiny Desk Concerts

Surely, we’ve all gone down the NPR Tiny Desk Concert rabbit hole. There’s something about seeing favorite artists (and new discoveries) in a highly intimate setting that feels special, even if we’re not there and just watching from our screens at home. The series has become a ubiquitous part of pop culture and lately, NPR has been asking celebrities to list out their favorite performances. Today, Insecure star, writer, and creator Issa Rae checked in to share her picks.

She led off her list with Raphael Saadiq, who is not only the composer for the musical score of Insecure, he’s also certifiably one of the best live acts in hip-hop and R&B. “When he linked up with Lucky Daye for “You Should Be Here” was just phenomenal,” Rae said as one of her highlight moments of the performance. She also counts Thundercat as one of her favorite Tiny Desks and in goofy Issa Dee fashion (her character in Insecure) she explains that “The lyrics [to his song FriendZone’] are lowkey kind of dumb. But to hear it sound so melodic was just like a treat for me.”

She goes on to talk about Sampha and how his music was featured in Insecure season 2, and that she “was introduced to Sampha by Solange when she was doing the music for season one, so he has a special place in my heart.” She tips the cap to SiR (“because, you know, Inglewood”), and rounds out her six with Baby Rose and Nick Hakim, who’ve both had songs featured on Insecure.
