Usually this early into the NFL season, diehard football fanatics debate which team will go all the way. Well, this year things are a bit different. Instead of sports fans nearly coming to blows over their favorite franchise, it is the music fans popping off.

Today (September 8), Kendrick Lamar announced that he would perform at the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show. While users online, including Lil Wayne’s longtime engineer Fabian Marasciullo, weren’t a fan of his selection, he did receive one notable co-sign. Over on Instagram, Rihanna showed her support of Kendrick Lamar by liking his reveal post (viewable here).

As the record-breaking headliner for Super Bowl 2023, Rihanna knows a thing or two about the football’s biggest stage. Still, users online are not buckling from their stance.

Many pointed about that the coveted show tapped Usher for Super Bowl 2024’s Halftime Show following his groundbreaking dominance in Las Vegas. Since, Super Bowl 2025 in New Orleans, Lil Wayne should’ve been selected for the slot. Back February, during an appearance on YG and Stevie’s 4HUNNID podcast, Lil Wayne made it crystal clear that he would be down if asked. He also expressed how sentimental the moment would be giving that NOLA is his hometown and where his career started by way of the Hot Boys.

50 Cent Recalls JAY-Z & Roc Nation Trying To Keep Him From Performing At The Super Bowl

50 Cent says JAY-Z’s company, Roc Nation, attempted to keep him from performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2022. He reflected on the historic performance and how it nearly never happened without the help of Eminem during a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“They wanted to leave me out of it. They didn’t want me there,” he remarked, which prompted a request for an explaination. He continued: “Roc Nation. Yeah, they didn’t want me there. Eminem wouldn’t do it without me. That’s how I ended up on the show because he was not coming if I didn’t do it. When that happens, you go, ‘Damn, so you just lost Eminem because you didn’t bring 50? Damn. All right. Bring 50 then.’ But if it was up to them, they would not have me there. I’m the surprise. I’m not on the bill at all. But they couldn’t get Em to do it without me.”

It’s not the first time 50’s brought up the story. On several occasions over the two years since, he’s thanked Eminem for sticking up for him. “50 is like a brother to me,” Eminem told The Hollywood Reporter when asked about their relationship. “50 has proven again and again that there’s really nothing he can’t do, and nobody gets in the way of him getting it done.” Outside of music, 50’s working with Eminem through his G-Unit Film and Television company to produce a series based on the Detroit rapper’s 2002 film, 8 Mile. Big Sean Has Left Roc Nation After Over 10 Years To Sign With A New Management Company

Big Sean has a new album, Better Me Than You, coming out soon, and this week he announced that he also has new representation to go along with it, leaving his old management company after 10 years. Sean was previously managed by Roc Nation, but from now on he’ll be represented by S10 Entertainment’s Brandon Silverstein, according to Billboard. The rapper told the trade, “Brandon shares the vision, understands where I’m headed, and I’m incredibly excited to work with him and the S10 team.”

Meanwhile, Silverstein said, “Big Sean is an incredible talent who, even after topping charts, breaking records, winning awards and headlining across the world, is just getting started. I can’t wait for fans to hear the new music.”

That new music is due in early August, but some fans were able to hear it early after it was allegedly leaked online by a Kanye West fan who was angry about Sean’s recent freestyle for the On The Radar Radio show. While some fans think that the music was leaked by Kanye himself, Sean dismissed that theory as “bullsh*t.” He appears to be taking everything in stride and forging ahead with the new album, as well as features on songs from DJ Premier (“Ya Don’t Stop“) and Eminem (“Tobey“).

Big Sean Leaves Roc Nation Ahead Of New Album, “Better Me Than You”

Big Sean has signed a new deal with S10 Entertainment after spending the last 10 years with Roc Nation. The company is helmed by Brandon Silverstein and was launched in partnership with Roc Nation back in 2017. The move comes ahead of the release of his new album, Better Me Than You.

“Brandon shares the vision, understands where I’m headed, and I’m incredibly excited to work with him and the S10 team,” Sean told Billboard in a statement. Silverstein added: “Big Sean is an incredible talent who, even after topping charts, breaking records, winning awards and headlining across the world, is just getting started. I can’t wait for fans to hear the new music.”

Sean is gearing up to drop Better Me Than You on August 9. He dropped a trailer for the project, earlier this month, which ended by showing four pie-shaped graphs. Sean hopped on social media afterward to explain that they represent four emotions he dealt with while making the album. “When I was making this album, I was going through I felt like the same four emotions, really,” he said. “And I remember I sat down and I drew this chart one day that just represented how I was feeling. I hand-drew it and I was like man, I never really saw this chart before.”

He added: “I ended up getting it animated. and it’s four different charts that represent four different feelings, four different moods of the album, four different emotions that I was going through personally. First of all, I was under a lot of pressure. But going through that pressure led to clarity, which led to me being able to focus on happiness and living in that happiness briefly, and then going right back to the pressure. But I drew these graphs out and it really just brought the album to life for me.” The new project will be Sean’s first Detroit 2 in 2020. Megan Thee Stallion Has Fellow H-Town Hottie Beyoncé To Thank For Her New Tequila Brand

Viewers of the 2024 BET Awards are still intoxicated by last night’s (June 30) ceremony. From Usher’s hotly debate Lifetime Achievement Award tribute to the flurry of individual performances, watchers have found a way to extend the televised celebration. One of the night’s entertainers, Megan Thee Stallion’s latest business venture, has something to keep the party going.

On May 19, the “Down Stairs DJ” rapper teased that she was gearing up to launch a tequila brand. Today (July 1) during her appearance on the Club Shay Shay podcast, Megan revealed that she has fellow Houston hottie Beyoncé to thank for the business’ formation.

When host Shannon Sharpe asked Megan about her next chapter as an independent artist, she revealed that it has leveled her up in all ways with the guidance of Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

“When I was in the situation with [1501] and I wanted to get out of it, they told me you need to do this on your own,” she said. “Like, ‘You already know what it is. You already have all the tools. All the legal sh*t you are going through, I know you are learning something. So you should figure out how to get out here and be your own boss.’”

Megan then opened up about the suggestion Beyoncé made. “Beyoncé is actually the person that inspired me to get my own tequila,” she said. “Because I used to be the cognac queen. I still am the cognac queen. But as much as I used to enjoy cognac, and I’ve promoted a lot of people’s liquor brands, she was like, ‘the next time I see you, you better have your own. You need to have your own alcohol.’”

Hit-Boy Praises Jay-Z For Getting Him Out Of A Bad Publishing Deal

Hit-Boy has proven himself to be one of the most versatile producers in the game. He’s worked with a laundry list of legends, and scored major crossover hits. If it wasn’t for Jay-Z, though, Hit-Boy would have been significantly less successful. Not from a charts perspective, but a monetary one. The producer recently appeared on an episode of The Shop, and he detailed the ways in which the Roc Nation founder saved his career.

Hit-Boy, like most artists starting out, failed to recognize the poor quality of his first contract. He was merely happy to be signed. The more he learned, however, the more clear it became that he was in a bad publishing situation. “I’m actually still in my publishing situation,” he told the hosts. “I signed when I was 19 years old and I’m 37, so I’ve been in the deal a long time with Universal Publishing. Hit-Boy described the terms of the contract as “ancient.” The worst part was that the producer did not have a clear end date for his contract. He could have easily been held to these initial terms for the rest of his life.

Roc Nation Renegotiated Hit-Boy’s Original Contract

Then Roc Nation stepped in. Hit-Boy credited Jay-Z and Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez with helping to straighten out his publishing. “[They] really got me to a place I’m in now, where I have an end date,” he admitted. “But before, my whole career I was working without having a[n] actual end date to— the way we really get our money is through publishing.” These changes appear to be recent, based on the sense of relief Hit-Boy displayed during the interview.

“That’s going to be, like, life changing for me,” the producer explained. “Just to even have freedom as a grown man.” He also noted that his contract kept him from securing huge advances, the way that some of his producing peers have. “I haven’t been able to go do other deals or go get advances in different places like my counterparts have,” he lamented. “I eat very well, but I know what it’s really supposed to be.” Fortunately, Hit-Boy appears to be on the right track to achieving what it’s supposed to be.

Roc Nation Releases Statement on Support of Pennsylvania Award for Student Success (PASS)

Roc Nation Champions League Final 3

Earlier this week, Roc Nation, the renowned entertainment company, unveiled plans to lead an educational campaign in Philadelphia aimed at helping students from low-income households access scholarships worth approximately $300 million to attend private schools in the city.

The initiative, named the Pennsylvania Award for Student Success (PASS), will be introduced through a series of events across the greater Philadelphia region from June 10 to June 21. These events will educate the public about the PASS program, also known as Senate Bill 757, designed to enhance educational opportunities for underprivileged youth attending the state’s lowest-performing public schools.

Today, Roc Nation has released a statement about the support of PASS:

The proficiency rates for students in Pennsylvania public schools are staggering.

According to the 2023 Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA), roughly 75 percent of eighth-grade students in the Pennsylvania public school system aren’t proficient in math while 47 percent aren’t proficient in language arts. Furthermore, in the bottom 15 percent of the state’s public schools, the data reveals that less than 10 percent of students are proficient in math, and only 25 percent are proficient in English. In 40 schools across the state, there were no students – absolutely none – that met the grade-level proficiency criteria in math.

While opposition dissects the future of public and private schools and debates our support of the Pennsylvania Award for Student Success (PASS), they are missing the most critical component of this entire equation – the children. Not once are the children mentioned. Not once are the dire proficiency levels of the children in Pennsylvania acknowledged.

At the end of the day, Roc Nation’s advocacy is centered around children and their right to seek the best options for quality education. If PASS scholarship legislation is approved, the initiative would empower parents and caretakers to evaluate multiple school programs and make informed scholastic decisions for the well-being of their children.

Otherwise, parents are simply at the mercy of the system, where their kids’ academic futures are predetermined based on economic status and the location of their homes. The reality is the current system is fundamentally flawed and failing our youth.

Look at the facts of William Penn School District et al. v. Pennsylvania Department of Education et al, a case filed in 2014 by six Pennsylvania school districts, the Pennsylvania Association of Rural and Small Schools, the NAACP-PA State Conference, and a group of public-school parents.

Nearly a decade after the original lawsuit, the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania ruled in 2023 that the state’s education system had been so underfunded that it violated students’ constitutional rights. During the course of this lengthy trial, students were denied a fair chance of receiving a basic education. It’s unacceptable, heartbreaking and appalling. Based on the conclusions of this trial we must all agree that this issue, and the future of our children, can no longer be ignored.

Fortunately, due to the Commonwealth Court’s ruling, there is a bill passed in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives that would potentially bring $5.1 billion to school districts across the state and help close the disparity between the wealthiest and the poorest schools. Although it’s a positive development, it begs multiple questions – how will this change take effect? What’s the plan to deploy those funds? When will the schools be properly resourced?

There is no tactical solution in place from the state and children are being forced to wait for answers. With every year that goes by, more and more children – particularly from poor districts – are missing out on learning opportunities and failing to maximize the full scope of their academic potential. The PASS scholarship programs being proposed all have clear and targeted criteria to ensure those in need – specifically households earning 250% below the federal poverty line – are eligible to receive financial aid. Not to mention that PASS scholarships would be funded by a separate tax funded state account, not assigned to public education.

Roc Nation’s passion for the PASS legislation is solely predicated on educational concerns for the children of the poorest zip codes in Pennsylvania. Anyone claiming our interest is political is political. If anyone would like to propose a more immediate solution, then we are all ears and would love nothing more than an opportunity to discuss. Until then, voting against PASS scholarships is the equivalent of telling Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable students that they must remain captive to a system that is not working for them.

We simply want to provide caregivers with knowledge around bills that would propose a strategic, near-term solution to support their children. Parents should be free to evaluate the best academic options possible for their kids without becoming political pawns for public pundits.

We are passionate about this issue because we have a personal connection with several communities across Pennsylvania. From organizing Made in America Festivals in Philadelphia to collaborating with REFORM Alliance on transformative statewide probation and parole bills, we have spent a significant amount of time in Pennsylvania over the years and truly care for its resilient residents.

We are supporters of the public school system – many of us are products of that very same system. But numbers don’t lie, and the data shows that there must be another avenue for success for the state’s most vulnerable students. Different communities across the country will require different solutions and should be analyzed on a case-by-case basis. For Pennsylvania, we believe PASS scholarships provide caregivers and students an education alternative that they should have the right to consider.

We can’t sit idly for another decade as the proficiency rates for students in Pennsylvania plunge lower and lower. We can’t keep failing the next generation of state leaders.

The children of Pennsylvania deserve better.

Roc Nation

To be eligible for PASS scholarships, students must come from households with incomes not exceeding 250% of the federal poverty level, currently set at $75,000 for a family of four. The scholarship amounts will vary, ranging from $2,500 for half-day kindergarten students to $15,000 for students with special needs, with funds provided by the government without impacting public school education budgets.

Roc Nation, known for its commitment to community development, has been deeply involved in Philadelphia through initiatives like the Made in America Festival since 2012 and collaboration with REFORM Alliance on criminal justice reform. Dania Diaz, Roc Nation’s Managing Director of Philanthropy, emphasized the importance of empowering Philadelphia’s youth for long-term success.

Jay-Z Performs At Tom Brady’s Patriots Hall Of Fame Induction: Watch

Jay-Z has become the face of the NFL when it comes to musical affiliation. The rapper’s company, Roc Nation, entered a partnership with the league in 2019 that has played a role in several half time shows. It was still surprising, however, to see Hov take the stage himself, and perform during Tom Brady’s Patriots Hall of Fame induction. The Brooklyn legend came out and shocked the crowd by rapping his 2003 song “Public Service Announcement” while Brady entered the stadium. It was appreciated by music fans, but it was especially appreciated by Brady himself.

The quarterback has voiced his adoration for Jay-Z on multiple occasions. He told Mass.Live that he was a “big fan” of Hov in 2014, and “Public Service Announcement” was the song that he chose as his theme whenever he stepped on the field. In particular, the lyrics: “Allow me to reintroduce myself.” There’s some fitting parallels between both men. Both Brady and Jay retired at the peak of their powers. Both returned and proved that they still had what it took to compete, further validating their “GOAT” status. Brady and Jay-Z also attended a breakfast that was organized by Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin by in May.

Jay-Z Opened The Ceremony With Brady’s Walkout Song

“Public Service Announcement” is a crucial song in Jay-Z’s catalog. The rapper discussed its importance in his 2010 memoir Decoded, and the interaction that led to its creation. He recalled a Village Voice writer criticizing his embrace of materialism in his music, and wrote the verses as a response. “It was a test of creativity and wit,” he wrote in the memoir. “I call rhymes like the first verse on ‘PSA’ Easter-egg hunts. If you just listen to it once without paying attention, you’ll brush past some lines… [They] can offer more meaning and resonance every time you listen to them.” Brady has obviously listened multiple times. He even threw up Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella sign during the induction performance.

Brady thanked those attending, and those watching, in an Instagram post before the induction. “Coming back to New England to celebrate what WE accomplished was so special,” he wrote in the caption. “And it’s a day that I’ll never forget. Being able to spend time with teammates, family, friends, coaches… And most importantly all the fans of Patriot nation is something that I’ll never take for granted.”

Why Is Jay-Z Facing Backlash For $300M Scholarship For Philadelphia Students?

This past weekend, Jay-Z and his company Roc Nation announced their “Dine & Learn” series to promote $300 million in scholarships for low-income Philadelphia households. The money is meant to help underprivileged youth bypass the public school system and attend prestigious private schools instead. On the surface, it seems like another of Jay-Z’s philanthropic ventures, maybe even an extension of his scholarship-giving Shawn Carter Foundation. But the Brooklyn-born rapper has come under fire for the seemingly selfless move. If you dig a little bit beneath the surface, the criticisms start to gain weight. All may not be as it seems with these latest Jay-Z-Roc Nation scholarships.

What Jay-Z & Roc Nation’s $300 Million Initiative Really Is

What many suspect is happening here is that Jay-Z is leveraging his influence and power to host and promote a 10-event series about a Republican-backed educational bill. These events aim to inform residents about Senate Bill 757, or the “Pennsylvania Award for Student Success” (PASS). This is what many perceive to essentially be a Republican school voucher program. The program would reportedly reroute $300 million in taxpayer dollars to fund charter and private schools.

On one hand, the program allows students to move out of an underfunded and failing school system. On the other, that’s $300 million that those same public schools will never see – and that private schools will essentially be handed. And then there’s the question of what will happen to those who don’t win any Jay-Z and Roc Nation-backed scholarships.

Jay-Z & Jeff Yass: An Odd Couple

Another strange part of this whole announcement is that it means Jay-Z is pairing up with Jeff Yass. The Philadelphia native is a billionaire conservative and a major investor in TikTok. Commentators have speculated that Yass influenced Trump’s side-switching on the TikTok ban bill that went through Congress earlier this year. After meeting with Yass at Mar-a-Lago in March, Trump flipped from supporting a ban on the app to opposing a ban.

Jeff Yass is also well-known for an anti-public school stance, pushing school choice policies and programs. Essentially, these policies and programs give families options for schooling beyond their local district. So, the public has been left wondering why Jay-Z would ever pair up with Yass. Critics argue that the PASS bill has an underhanded goal of diverting and exhausting public school funding. Why exactly would Jay-Z and Roc Nation support these scholarships?

Roc Nation’s Position

Well, truthfully, all we have at the moment is Roc Nation’s public comments. The company’s CEO, Desiree Perez, told the media that “what we are backing is education…We’re just educating [people], which I would think everyone wants people to make informed decisions.” So, the company’s current stance is that they are simply spreading awareness for educational options in Philadelphia. Still, many city residents aren’t so sure a school voucher program is the correct way to handle the situation. Later in her HuffPost interview, Perez stated “The kids in these zip codes are suffering right now. If you have a better solution, aside from making them wait until the public school system can get it together with the funding they are receiving, I am all ears.”

The Philadephia public school system’s situation is quite complex, and the public has reacted with varying nuanced opinions on Jay-Z’s involvement. Some have said that letting some low-income youth attend private schools ultimately hurts the majority left behind. Others have said that Jay-Z is simply trying to help level the playing field since $300 million wouldn’t fix Philadelphia’s public schools. Amid this storm of public responses, it remains unclear what Jay-Z and Roc Nation’s motives are for the scholarships. All we have at this time is his CEO’s public statements.

JAY-Z Comes Under Fire For Educational Campaign In Philadelphia

JAY-Z is facing backlash on social media for the announcement that Roc Nation is helping dish out $300 million in scholarships to Philadelphia students in grades K-12 through the PASS program (Pennsylvania Award for Student Success). Throughout June, the company will be hosting a series of events to educate the public about the program. While it seems like a worthy philanthropic effort on the surface, critics feel its true mission is to undermine public school funding in service of further privatizing education.

“Just to be clear for those not in Pennsylvania, the legislation Jay-Z is supporting here is a Republican-led effort to gut public education, spearheaded by future Trump cabinet member Jeffrey Yass,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Another added: “Whether Jay-Z or the upper middle-class family on the block: if you have resources and don’t allocate them to local public schools, you are making a moral and political choice. Taking children out of public schools in favor of private IS PRECISELY what hurts the most vulnerable.”

Roc Nation announced the move earlier this week. “We have enjoyed such a special connection with Philadelphians, so we’ve made it our mission to invest in the long-term success of the city’s changemakers,” Roc Nation Managing Director of Philanthropy Dania Diaz said in a statement caught by Billboard. “Impact starts with the students and with awareness. We want to empower the youth and families with the knowledge to pursue their scholastic dreams, make their voices heard and become the leaders of tomorrow.”
