Lancey Foux Continues His Trend Of Softer Cuts On Cash Cobain Backed Single “Gotta Get U”

Stratford, London rapper and singer Lancey Foux has been riding an R&B wave as of late on his last few singles. It has been a little bit of a deviation from his September 2023 album BACK2DATRAP which saw him bring more aggressive trap raps to the table. But 2024 has been about exploring melodies and crooning and that has not been a bad thing so far. “Gotta Get U” is the latest offering from Lancey Foux in this format and he is working with a special talent.

New York-bred producer and rapper Cash Cobain has been all over the place in the last few months. He has worked with talents of all levels, including names like Bktherula, Ice Spice, Jay Critch, just to name a few. He was also quoted, saying he had future collaborations with Don Toliver, Travis Scott, and even Frank Ocean of all people. There is no doubt that his woozy and intoxicating sound is making waves across the industry and across the pond.

Now, he is working with Lancey Foux on “Gotta Get U.” This track follows up “On Ur Mind” and “Live Forever.” Both of them brought atmospheric vibes and this newest one does the same with Cash’s flare. The sped-up drums, along with the spacey instrumental, complement Lancey’s lyrics about wanting to take a girl back to his place for an intimate time. Check out “Gotta Get U” with the link above.

Quotable Lyrics:

Let’s get back to the spot, lеt’s get back to the pent (To thе pent)
I’ve got one uptown girl and I’ve got one in the ends
I know how to keep her aroused, I keep her close to the edge
I’m in New York, what’s up, I’m sorry that it’s been a minute
I’ve got her too turned up, I make her feel sexy
Can’t tell her to get undressed, she already came undressed

Jorja Smith Revamps Select Tracks From “Falling Or Flying” On Reimagined Version

The always stunning Jorja Smith was in incredible form for her sophomore record falling or flying last year. Following her 2018 debut Lost & Found, the British R&B/soul singer put forth a versatile set of 16 songs that spanned just under 44 minutes long. Tracks like “Little Things,” “GO GO GO,” and “Greatest Gift,” were among its standouts and all of them now have new versions. Jorja Smith has just come through with a falling or flying (Reimagined) project that sees her remake some stark changes to eight songs in total.

Jorja went for a more stripped-back approach, bringing a more somber tone for this version of her critically-acclaimed LP. Perhaps the most glaring deviation is on “GO GO GO.” If you remember, the original had a faster paced pop rock instrumental with an IDGAF attitude from Jorja. On the (Reimagined) rendition, the guitar is more in the background, with beautifully tragic piano keys taking centerstage.

This project was initially teased back in late April, when Smith released the updated “Greatest Gift.” Another thing worth noting is that all of the features, like Lila Ike for example, are non-existent here. According to Clash, all of these toned-down records were made with Jorja’s long-time band in London. Be sure to support this equally captivating listen of falling or flying with the links above.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new album falling or flying (Reimagined) by Jorja Smith? Do you think she made the right changes for each track, why or why not? Rapsody & Erykah Badu Are Lovestruck On “3:AM”

About two and half months ago, Erykah Badu celebrated turning 53 years young with a show in her hometown of Dallas, Texas. Joining her onstage for her birthday bash was North Carolina veteran femcee Rapsody. Their performance together went viral mostly because of thirsty men online. Badu sported booty shorts that male fans googly-eyed and simping. But hip-hop heads were also ecstatic because of the snippet that these two legends previewed. “3:AM” from Rapsody and Erykah Badu is now here, and it is quite spectacular.

This is now the third single from the “OooWee” rapper’s forthcoming record Please Don’t Cry. The May 17 release first began its rollout back in October of last year with “Asteroids” featuring production from Hit-Boy. It would not be until March that we received the second offering “Stand Tall.” The feature list is going to be stacked, with names like Lil Wayne, Baby Tate, Alex Isley, and Niko Brim also in the fold.

Listen To “3:AM” By Rapsody & Erykah Badu

From the brief audio we heard at Badu’s show, “3:AM” seemed to be leaning into the R&B side of things. Those suspicions were correct, as both leading ladies sing and rap about being infatuated with their partners. Badu’s high-pitched and nasally voice on the chorus and in the background complement Rap’s passionate performance. The instrumental is slow, sensual, and extremely dreamy and in our eyes, Rapsody is three for three so far.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single “3:AM” by Rapsody and Erykah Badu? Does this get you excited for her upcoming album Please Don’t Cry, why or why not? Who had the stronger performance on the track? Did this collaboration live up to the hype? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. You could take the sour out of lemons with your sweetness (Softly)
Solid, grounded like the ones that grows beneath us
I conceive your fetus, that would probably have my features (Haha)
We laugh, our sense of humor is what feeds us, I love you (I love you)
I trust you, staycations in St. Regis, like Weezy (Let’s go)

SZA Believes People Label Her As An R&B Artist Only Because She’s Black

In a new interview with Dazed published Wednesday (May 1), SZA spoke on only being considered an R&B artist because she’s Black. It’s a mistake that we and many others have committed in the past, not just as outlets and publications in white-dominant and often exploitative media spaces, but as non-Black audiences comparing Black art to the white-dominant spaces of pop music at large. It’s an issue that many Black artists like Tyler, The Creator have addressed to varying degrees.

Most importantly, it’s not meant to detach the St. Louis native from R&B, which she’s made a lot of, but rather to accurately assess the full range of musical styles that she employs as a pop artist, whose only defining characteristic is… well, being a popular artist that writes with pop song structures, which are not at all exclusive to the typical music genre expectations we associate with “pop.” “The only reason I’m defined as an R&B artist is because I’m Black,” SZA remarked. “It’s almost a little reductive because it doesn’t allow space to be anything else or try anything else. Justin Bieber is not considered an R&B artist. He is a pop artist who makes R&B, folk music, or whatever his heart desires.

“I simply just want to be allowed the same opportunity to make whatever I want without a label. [Without it being] based on the color of my skin, or the crew that I run with, or the beats that I choose,” SZA continued. “I want ‘F2F’ to be seen as what it is. I want ‘Nobody Gets Me’ to be seen as what it is, I want ‘Kill Bill’ to be seen as what it is.

“At the same time, it’s nothing to get bent out of shape about. Because it’s just how people are processing you,” SZA concluded. “As long as I don’t process myself that way. I don’t necessarily box myself into anything. I’m just trying to make music, trying to vibe out and enjoy the experience.”

A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie Is Back In His Ballad Bag With Pre-Album Sampler “ALONE”

Highbridge, Bronx, New York rapper and singer A Boogie Wit da Hoodie is taking on the role of the former on his new EP ALONE. The 28-year-old Artist is gearing up for his eighth project Better Off Alone, which will be due on May 17, according to Genius. Over the course of his career, the “Swervin” creator has given us plenty of ballads on every release. It is part of the reason why he has become such a popular figure from the East Coast. So, to tide fans over, A Boogie is doing just that for four tracks on ALONE.

For us, the production is what stands out. The moody, atmospheric, mostly piano-backed instrumentals sound expensive, so it is clear that he was not trying to cheat fans out of good sonics, even on an EP. The singing/rapping is heavily auto tuned, but it does not turn us off. In some cases, it actually works for the betterment for tracks like the opener “Tiffanys.”

“No More Questions” might be the highlight for us, though. We find that Boogie arguably gives us his most passionate singing and spitting performance. There is also a touching tribute to his late friend and collaborator PnB Rock. On the backend of the song, there is a slowed down version of Rock’s chorus on the 2017 GTTM: Goin Thru the Motions cut “Questions” that adds a nice extra bit of memorability factor. Be sure to support A Boogie and his new EP ALONE with the links above.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new EP ALONE by A Boogie Wit da Hoodie? Does this get you excited for his upcoming album Better Off Alone, why or why not? Lucky Daye Is Looking To Go All The Way With A Love Interest On “HERicane”

Lucky Daye, a New Orleans, Louisiana based R&B artist, is someone who really picked up steam later in life. The 38-year-old singer and songwriter began to make a name for himself when he auditioned for the hit music television series American Idol back in 2005. Fast forward about 14 years and that was when he dropped his first album Painted. He would go on to be nominated four times at the 62nd GRAMMY Awards for it for Best R&B Album, Best Traditional R&B Performance, as well as Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance. All of that success has led Lucky Daye to becoming a still underrated, but household name and “HERicane,” his new single, shows why.

This track follows up the incredibly infectious and soulful “That’s You” that dropped back in November. The Bruno Mars and D’Mile produced cut has been on repeat for us since then and we are hoping it is teasing a new album. “HERicane” might be that second offering based on the similar themes of finding true love and wanting to be extremely intimate. On this record, also produced by D’Mile, Lucky Daye is doing what ever he can to draw in this woman with his charm.

Listen To “HERicane” By Lucky Daye

All of these efforts he hopes will lead him to getting down and freaky with this woman and entering the “HERicane” so to speak. “This ain’t flirtin’, you deserve it, and you’re worth that much / Heart beat racin’, closin’ spaces, bodies touch / So elated, you’re amazin’.” This story is performed over a groovy guitar instrumental that is more upbeat and pop-inspired, compared to the moodier neo-soul “That’s You.”

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single “HERicane” by Lucky Daye? Is this his best release as of late, why or why not? Do you think he has a new album coming soon? Where would you place him amongst the rest of R&B crowd? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Rod Wave Updates An Older Track With “Numb”

Rod Wave has gone through a little bit of a rough patch in his life. Earlier this month, the Florida rapper and singer was arrested after weapons and/or ammo were found on his person. This arrest was escalated based on the fact that the multi-hyphenate was previously charged with felony battery charges, even though they were dropped. As a felon, you are not allowed to carry weapons. However, Rod was back in the clear after police did some extra digging. It turned out that it was “not accurate,” so he was released from his jail cell shortly after being put in handcuffs.

With that messy situation behind him, Rod Wave has been comfortable enough to get back into the recording booth. Case and point, this new single from him called “Numb.” This is Rod’s first piece of music since his acclaimed 2023 record Nostalgia. However, you are not going to find the song on streaming, as it is only on YouTube as of now.

Listen To “Numb” By Rod Wave

If the “Numb” title looks familiar to you, that is because Rod Wave made a song of the same name in 2018. It landed on just his second project called Hunger Games 3, a point in his career where he will still finding his stride. The “original” version some rough vocal chops that seem unrecognizable today. This 2024 edition features a better listening experience all the way around. On this track, Rod is singing/rapping about people turning on him and getting used to it. He also wrestles with his drug addiction because of it and you can tell Rod feels damaged from it based on his cadence.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single “Numb” by Rod Wave? Is this the better version of his 2018 track, why or why not? Where do you rank this song amongst the rest of his entire discography? Do you think he should give the song a wider release? Is Nostalgia still in your rotation? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Rod Wave. BadBadNotGood & Baby Rose “Slow Burn” Review

Jazz band BadBadNotGood and singer Baby Rose have dropped a collab EP called Slow Burn. The band burst onto the scene with a co-sign from a young Tyler, The Creator who also performed with them. Many latched on to them for their jazz covers of rap songs on their first two projects. However, as the years went on, they shifted to albums comprised entirely of original music including a project with the Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah. Though they’ve certainly cemented a sound within hip-hop, their musicality undoubtedly reaches well beyond the genre while remaining rooted in jazz. As for Baby Rose, she’s established her distinct voice across various projects, including the Insecure and Creed III soundtracks and Revenge of the Dreamers III. She also appeared on projects from The Internet’s Matt Martians, Big K.R.I.T and Erick The Architect’s I’ve Never Been Here Before.

The five-track EP from BadBadNotGood and Baby Rose showcases a brief but effective group of styles without losing its central themes, sonically and lyrically. The concept of love is explored in various ways across the project with Baby Rose expressing her trials and tribulations of romance. She keeps things interesting by sharing how it has hurt her and how she has moved on from it through a variety of sonically excellent moods across the project.

Slow Burn Is A Showcase Of Excellent Vocals And Instrumentation

Opener “On My Mind,” BadBadNotGood’s organs help Baby Ross keep her cool on the verses before her vocals charge up on the hook. The explosively expressive electric guitar blends with Baby Rose’s powerful vocals, while basslines carry to the forefront and she accents her verses with background vocals that enhance the track’s mood.

One standout song on Slow Burn is “It’s Alright,” the most upbeat record on the EP. The drums on this one are a little faster, helping enhance its slightly light-hearted atmosphere. However, Baby Rose’s lyrics exemplify the emotional depth she carries in her songwriting. This track takes some detours as the energy dies down briefly to introduce unique sounds in the song’s final minute. The lyrical prowess continues “Weekness” whose creative spelling offers a glimpse into the song’s content. Baby Rose lists how things in her relationship change over the days. This track’s gritty electric guitar give it a slightly more aggressive feeling than the rest of the EP but the project remains cohesive.

The EP Has One Feature And An Immersive Single

The only feature on BadBadNotGood and Baby’s Rose’s EP appears on “Caroline” with a contribution from Mereba. Her and Baby Rose provide some beautiful back-and-forth moments and harmonies across the track. Their contrasting voices complement each other well and while Mereba does not have a full verse, she handles the pre-hook of the track mostly on her own. This one’s gentle acoustic guitar and steady drums give it a peaceful atmosphere that would pair well with a sunny day at the park. The subtle woodwind instrument only adds to this mood as it almost becomes the third voice in the song despite its almost understated presence.

BadBadNotGood and Baby Rose’s Slow Burn had one single released for it. Titled “One Last Dance,” it sounds like something one would hear in a lounge from the days of the past. A peaceful organ, floaty woodwind and soothing bass provide the soundscape for Baby Rose’s vintage-like vocals as she talks of seeing her once-lover return to her life. This track is the EP’s last song, functioning as a final chapter to the other tales of love shared across the rest of the project.

Final Thoughts On Slow Burn

Slow Burn is an EP for people looking for something that blends a myriad of tranquil genres together. However, if we were forced to put labels on it, we’d say those genres are specifically jazz, R&B and soul. Baby Rose’s songwriting is excellent across the entire EP with some verses being shorter than others but still as effective. BadBadNotGood’s musical compositions are relaxing throughout most of the project with brief moments of high energy that aren’t jarring. If you’re unfamiliar with either artist, this is an excellent introduction to them and with its brief length, you can let the whole EP play and then go back to replay your favorites.

Strick & 6LACK Make It Clear They Are Top-Tier Men On “COME ALIVE”

Strick continues to prove to people that he can consistently go toe to toe with the best in the industry. The North Carolina R&B singer has been able to score collaborations with names like James Blake, Young Thug, Skepta, Ty Dolla $ign and so much more. The YSL signee has been keeping fans waiting for about two years for another new album, and a new one might be on the way shortly. We say that because Strick is back to working with another R&B veteran 6LACK for a new single “COME ALIVE.”

This is his second single of the year, and it follows up “KISSES MAKE SURE” with his mentor, Thugger, and James Blake. It seems like this next album could be stacked with big features. As we mentioned, this is Strick and 6LACK’s newest song together and its now their second. They previously worked on “Desire” back in 2019 off of The Machine, Vol. 2.

The Life & Legacy Of Luther Vandross

Without a doubt, Luther Vandross is a name that will be remembered in R&B, and the music industry at large, for years to come. For decades, his enchanting voice and unparalleled vocal range have captivated audiences. Even after his untimely death, Luther Vandross’ music continues to thrive in the hearts and ears of listeners old and new. It goes without saying that he was one of the most influential R&B artists of all time.

While people have never stopped listening to his music, Vandross’ name rarely ever comes up in discussions these days. However, following a recent incident at a Madonna concert, Luther Vandross has been trending. The Queen of Pop was recently under fire since she included Vandross’ photo in an AIDS/HIV tribute during her tour. This is because Luther Vandross actually died of a stroke, and did not have either disease. While Madonna faced backlash for the error, fans have since been refreshed with Vandross’ material. Here’s a look at the life and legacy of the quintessential R&B singer.

The Early Years

Born on April 20, 1951, Luther Vandross was raised in Manhattan until he was nine when his family moved to the Bronx. From an early age, he was immersed in the soulful sounds of gospel, blues, and R&B, and had an immense love for music. As a matter of fact, at the tender age of three, Vandross taught himself to play the piano by ear. Subsequently, the older he grew, the more his musical talent shone. His exceptional vocal abilities could not be denied and quickly caught the attention of those around him. However, while it was clear from a young age that he possessed a rare gift, it took a while before Vandross gained acclaim.

Luther Vandross’ Ascent

Luther Vandross’ journey to musical stardom is a testament to his unwavering dedication and unparalleled talent. He put in the work for years and years before he had his shot at being in the limelight. Before his official debut in the music industry, Luther Vandross worked extensively as a backing vocalist. Throughout the ‘70s, he supplied backing vocals for many prominent artists. These include Donna Summer, Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, and Stevie Wonder, among many others. In the late ‘70s, Luther Vandross became a member of a singing quartet called Luther. Together, the group released two albums, Luther (1976), and This Close To You (1977). Unfortunately, the group was dropped by their label, Cotillion Records, due to low album sales.

Subsequently, Vandross had another brief stint as the lead singer of the group Change. On April 16, 1980, the group released their debut album, The Glow of Love, to moderate commercial success. However, Luther Vandross left the group soon after, choosing to forge ahead as a solo artist. Not long afterward, he was signed to Epic Records, kickstarting his groundbreaking solo career.

Outstanding Musical Contributions

Right after his 30th birthday in 1981, Luther Vandross released “Never Too Much,” his debut solo single. Subsequently, on August 12, 1981, he dropped his debut solo album of the same name. The 2x Platinum album announced Luther Vandross to the world like nothing else ever had. It marked the beginning of a very successful and influential solo career for the singer. Altogether, he released 13 solo albums between 1981 and 2003, all of which had varying levels of success. Throughout his decades-long solo career, Luther Vandross garnered both critical acclaim and commercial success. Give Me The Reason (1986), Power Of Love (1991), Songs (1994), and Dance With My Father (2003) are among his best-selling albums. The latter is the last album Vandross released before he sadly passed away in 2005.

The Legacy Of Luther Vandross

There’s no argument that Luther Vandross is among the most iconic male singers in R&B history. Almost two decades after his death, his works continue to speak for him and prove his immense talent. While the world continues to mourn the loss of the singer, his legacy undoubtedly lives on through his timeless music. In life, the man was steadfast to his craft, and his love for music can be heard all over his songs. Luther Vandross made songs that will remain evergreen, and he will continue to be celebrated for that.
