James Fauntleroy & No ID (The 80s) Revive “The Pursuit” 13 Years Later

James Fauntleroy and legendary producer No ID are giving fans what they want this summer. They are combining their talents on an EP, but not in the way that you think. This is not a brand-new release by any means. In fact, this tape that is out now is about 13 years old. It is called The Pursuit, and it is a production of the duo’s group known as The 80s or The Cocaine 80s. If you have not heard of this collective before, let us give you a little history lesson for some background.

James and No ID are just two of the artists responsible for bringing this idea to fruition back in the early 2010s. Chicago rap genius Common, as well as Los Angeles-bred singer Jhené Aiko, joined along for the ride. This quartet is known for the smooth and stunning R&B cuts with an alternative flare. What you are seeing in front of you is the first of four EPs, as The Pursuit began the string of EPs from 2011 to 2013. The last of them was The Flower Of Life and since then, we have not received any new music from this talented act. Hopefully, with The 80s bringing The Pursuit to streaming this weekend, maybe they will revive the other subsequent EPs. You can check out the long-awaited fan-favorite tape with the links below and relive the magic that was created all those years ago.

Chloe Bailey Claims Her Music Is Only Labeled R&B Because Of Race

Chloe Bailey has been a star for most of her like. She broke out as half of the duo Chloe x Hailey in 2016, and scored major successes alongside her sister before going solo in 2021. Her debut album was praised by fans and critics alike, for its musical ambition and eclectic blend of sounds. Chloe Bailey was trying to defy easy categorization with her art, but she was repeatedly tagged with the label of R&B. She talked about this frustrating situation during a recent interview with Nylon.

Bailey told the outlet that her R&B categorization stems from the color of her skin, and not her sound. “Any music I do will easily and quickly be categorized as R&B because I’m a Black woman,” she noted. “If someone who didn’t have my skin tone made the same music, it would be in the pop categories. That’s just the way it’s always been in life.” The desire to break out of genre constraints is something Bailey has sought to do more as she’s gotten older. She’s found chart success, and now she’s seeking out artistic success on her own terms. Bailey cited two of the singers who managed to shed the R&B label, and one of them, unsurprisingly, is her mentor.

Chloe Bailey loved Beyonce’s album Cowboy Carter. She had a front row seat to Beyonce’s transformation, given that she signed to the icon’s label in 2016. She was still surprised by what she heard in terms of genre experimentation. “I was really proud of Beyonce doing Cowboy Carter,” she asserted. “Because Black people originated country music. It’s just showing that possibilities are endless.” Bailey also mentioned Whitney Houston as a Black, female singer who proved that true crossover success is attainable.

The singer isn’t going for Houston’s pop or Beyonce’s country on her new album, though. Chloe Bailey told Nylon that she’s seeking to carve her own genre and musical path. One inspired by the sounds she has heard in the Caribbean. The outlet cites “calypso, gospel, Afrobeats, and Carnival band music” in the upcoming album, which is titled Trouble In Paradise. Bailey concurs. She also described an overarching theme to the album. “[It’s a] coming-of-age celebration of being a woman and having fun,” she stated. “Not taking life too seriously.” We can’t wait to hear it.

Rod Wave Releases Ballad “Lonely” Ahead Of New Unnamed Project

Rod Wave has built quite the committed fan base since he made landfall toward the end of the 2010 decade. With an instantly recognizable take on the R&B genre, the Floridian singer and balladeer was able to rise quite quickly. 2023 was a pretty good year for the veteran, as he put out his fifth studio album, Nostalgia. It featured a healthy number of popular songs, including “Turks & Caicos”, featuring 21 Savage, “Great Gatsby”, Boyz Don’t Cry”, and “Fight The Feeling”. The project also did well numbers wise, selling 137,000 copies in its first week, which helped it stay at number one on the Billboard Hot 200 two weeks straight. Now, Rod Wave is gearing up for another potential hit record, dropping its second single “Lonely”.

Fans we treated to a 2024 version of “Numb”, as the original landed on Rod’s 2018 tape, Hunger Games 3. Despite sharing the same title, the sound of each one is starkly different. On “Lonely”, Rod is delivering his signature melodies and twinkly production, as he passionately sings about a girl he wants to save from toxic men. The YouTube-exclusive single is already seeing tremendous praise from fans, as it is currently number 13 on Trending for music. You can tell that Rod is dealing with more pain and strong feelings on this track and it seems the album will feature more examples just like “Lonely”. “This f***ing project hurt so bad, but [I’m going to give] it to y’all”, he said on Instagram according to HipHopNMore. There is no clear release date for the album yet, but best believe that fans are readier than ever for it.

Kwazii Is Not Giving Up On Love On “White Flags”

“‘White Flags’ is a song that represents a connection shared between two people with a common flawed perception of genuine love. Parting ways isn’t an option; Surrendering to love is the only way to move forward”. That is how Kwazii and his team are describing his new single “White Flags”. This is now his second promotional track from an upcoming mixtape the Canadian artist has in the works. Fans can expect I WAS PERFECT TO SOMEONE on September 20.

Yes, that is a long time, but Kwazii seems to have a lot of faith that “White Flags” is going to a track that holds listeners over. We can see the vision here, as he delivers a passionate performance about a relationship, he is willing to fight tooth and nail for. “I spent so many days tryna feel some / When the cut comes from someone you love it always heals wrong / And you draw for the knife / Oh isn’t love f***ing awful at times / I’m on the edge and it’s all on the line“. All of this is performed over some tasteful R&B-esque production, adding to the moodiness of the song. It is worth noting that I WAS PERFECT TO SOMEONE is Kwazii’s debut tape. If we are getting this kind of quality on an inaugural project, then he is in for an explosive rise to fame.

Timbaland Gets Help From N3WYRKLA For Bratty Single “CH3RRY”

You are not going to find too many more talented producers than Timbaland. His ability to create undeniable grooves or just straight bangers in nearly unmatched and its why he is built such an iconic career. On top of that, he was worked with almost every hip-hop/R&B star you can think of. However, he does not pigeonhole himself to only teaming up with the biggest names. The Virginia native is always showing the rising stars in the industry love, as well as giving each artist his best stuff time and time again. That is the case on Timbaland’s newest single “CH3RRY”.

This time around the hitmaker extraordinaire is linking with newcomer N3WYRKLA, an R&B singer with one heck of an attitude. At least that is the case on “CH3RRY”, as the vocalist is putting Gen Z men on blast for being soft. In addition to her bold claims, she is also fed up with the games these same guys are playing, as her career is taking centerstage in her life. If the name N3WYRKLA sounds familiar, that is because she was featured on Brent Faiyaz’s most recent album, Larger Than Life. Even though she has a smaller following, N3WYRKLA is quickly rising up the totem pole due to her co-signs from two of the biggest names. As for Timbaland, this just proves once again that he is still on top of his game. That is especially true in 2024, as he scored some production credits on Kanye’s VULTURES 1.

Tems Details Her Mental Journey On “Born In The Wild”

Tems rise to the top has been quite rapid. Over the last couple of years, the Lagos, Nigerian genre chameleon has notched some impressive feathers in her cap. Whether it be working with Drake (multiple times) and Future on “WAIT FOR U”, or Wizkid and Justin Bieber on “Essence”, she has really been everywhere. We also cannot forget to mention her contributions to the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. But just because she has all of these major collaborations, do not think for one second that her solo career is lackluster. From “Me & U” to “Love Me JeJe”, and “Higher”, the 28-year-old has a loaded catalog, too. The first two singles land on Tems’ debut album, Born in the Wild.

It follows up on a tandem of EPs, For Broken Ears (2020) and If Orange Was A Place (2021), both of which were well received. We can almost guarantee that her first full-length will get similar praise as well. Across the 18-song, nearly hour-long project, fans can expect a personal journey of learning to deal with fame, relationships, as well some introspection. Born in the Wild could mean a few things, but since Tems says it is all about her mindset and how she has grown. “It’s more about the state of being. It was a wilderness in the environment I lived in and there’s so many things that happened and so many lessons I learned to come and be this person now. It is basically coming out of the wilderness.”

Moses Sumney Wants Old-School Love On The Breathtaking “Vintage”

Moses Sumney is the definition of a bada**. The Asheville, North Carolina really does it all. He can sing, produce, direct, act, and write all while being underrated somehow. He is a true unicorn and someone that needs more flowers than he already receives. Mainstream listeners might know him for his feature credits with artists like The Weeknd, Metro Boomin, James Blake, among others. But he is much more than that, as his solo material has produced some truly beautiful pieces of art. One of those works includes the latest single from Moses Sumney, “Vintage”.

This is the latest offering from the 32-year-old soul/R&B veteran, and it follows up on a feature he did for Shabaka on “Insecurities”. Hopefully, “Vintage” is the start of an album rollout, because this song deserves that kind of shine. Moses pens an endearing song about a love that he feels needs to go back to its old ways. To us, there is also a metaphor of how relationships do not feel as treasured as they used to when previous generations were finding their partners.

It is all performed with a breathy and delicate delivery, and a dynamic vocal range. The instrumental is also wonderfully blissful. The light drum patterns to the piano and sparkly synths are so complementary and add a lot of whimsy to “Vintage”. Not only do the lyrics portray it, but the beat also has that “Afro-sheen on it“. This track for Moses Sumney comes at an exciting time, as he is going to appear in the upcoming horror film MaXXXine, which stars Mia Goth, Lily Collins, Halsey, and Kevin Bacon. You can check out the track above and the movie on July 5.

What are your thoughts on “Vintage” by Moses Sumney? Is this one of his best songs as of late, why or why not? Do you think he is due to drop a new album this year? Ray J’s 19-Year-Old Hit “One Wish” Could Be Viewed As A Potential Metaphor For His Career

Ray J has had one of the more interesting careers in music. The McComb, Mississippi multi-talent has played the role of R&B songwriter, television star, entrepreneur, among other things. However, it seems like no matter what, the thing that people will remember him for is the infamous sex tape. Him and an ex-girlfriend Kim Kardashian were constantly in the headlines in some fashion because of it, and it still comes up today. In fact, an interview with Shannon Sharpe’s podcast, Club Shay Shay, just dropped with him and he still had a hard time talking about it.

However, the speed bumps did not stop with Kim. Ray J also had a tumultuous relationship with Love & Hip-Hop co-star Princess Love. They announced divorce after divorce, and it just seemed that they were never on the same page. Now, the troubled music mogul is tied to Sukihana, who is a controversial figure in her own right. Sometimes, it feels like Ray J could use “One Wish” from a genie or something to remove all of the headaches from his life.

In retrospect, his 2005 smash hit could be viewed as a metaphor for wanting the trajectory of his career to be different than it turned out to be. Two lines that feel all too real now are, “I swear, if I lose a second chance with you / I wouldn’t know what to do“. Things can always improve, and Ray J may be getting a second chance now to rewrite his legacy going forward.

What are your thoughts on “One Wish” by Ray J? Is this the best song of his career, why or why not? Is Raydiation the strongest record in his discography? Muni Long Delivers A Dynamic Vocal Performance On “Make Me Forget”

Muni Long burst onto the scene with her it single “Made For Me”, which has racked up a considerable number of streams. It currently sits at over 136 million plays, and it is for good reason. The catchy melody in the instrumental, as well as Long’s effortless singing are a match made in heaven. She definitely knows that song has become a smashing success due to all of its remixes and versions with different artists. In fact, she got to collaborate with Mariah Carey on its most recent rendition not too long ago.

However, Muni Long is eventually going to have to add more hits and solid tracks to her discography. That is especially true if she wants to have a long career. Well, Muni Long has done just that with her newest offering “Make Me Forget”. Fans are already thrilled with the results, praising its writing and vocal chops.

Kehlani Will Do Anything To Be “Next 2 U” On Latest “CRASH” Single

Kehlani is one of R&B’s most consistent artists. You can always count on her to deliver some smooth and stunning falsetto vocals on a single, feature, or album. Pretty soon, the Oakland songstress will be coming through on the latter with a new project called CRASH. Kehlani announced it about two weeks ago and she is back to promote it for the second time with “Next 2 U”.

This single follows up on the already popular “After Hours”, which dropped back on April 4. The lead single sampled the 2004 hit “Move Ya Body” by Nina Sky and Jabba, and its addicting vocal melodies and instrumental have really sold the song for a lot of people. Now, Kehlani is looking to go two for two with “Next 2 U”. This track has a much different sound, opting for more booming bass and electronic elements.

“After Hours” was more pop centric and more danceable, but here, Kehlani is looking to focus more on providing a show-stopping performance. In our opinion, the 29-year-old succeeds once again, as she sings passionately about protecting the one she loves. “To get next to you / They gon’, they gon’ have to call the law / I don’t care what they offer, I’m protecting you“. See if you think Kehlani passes the test again by checking out the track and its visuals above.
