Janelle Monae’s “Champagne Sh*t” Makes A Splash On Today’s “R&B Season” Update

Not only are we living in the Age of Aquarius, but thanks to Janelle Monae, we’re now also living in The Age of Pleasure. The 37-year-old shared her new album earlier this weekend, and already the internet can’t get enough of it. Unsurprisingly, a title from the project was picked to appear on our latest R&B Season playlist update, along with tracks from other favourites like Maeta and Ar’mon.

Taking the top spot today is “Liquor Store In The Sky,” a collaboration between BJ The Chicago Kid and Freddie Gibbs. Since dropping on Friday (June 9), the nearly three-and-a-half minute-long effort has already amassed upwards of 55K streams on Spotify alone. From Maeta’s When I Hear Your Name album we’ve picked a solo effort called “Questions.” Elsewhere on the UK songbird’s LP, you can hear her connect with Lucky Daye, Ty Dolla $ign, Ambré, and other friends.

R&B duo Emotional Oranges gave us more heat in the form of “Wrong Hands” to kick off June on a strong note. From BLK ODYSSY’s DIAMONDS & FREAKS project, we’ve hand-picked “PINK MARMALADE” with Eimaral Sol, though the full 15-track album is worth streaming when you have the time. As promised, Monae’s “Champagne Sh*t” comes after that. The catchy song is second on The Age of Pleasure‘s tracklist, right after the previously released “Float” single with Seun Kuti and Egypt 80. Others who appear alongside Janelle include Doechii, Grace Jones, CKay, and actress Nia Long.

The first of our two final selections is Ar’mon’s “Assignment” single. Closing things out behind that is “Kissing New People,” marking Ty Dolla $ign’s third consecutive week appearing in our list of picks. Ty Dolla Sign Sets Our “R&B Season” Playlist In “Motion” With His New Single

The first weekend of June is quickly wrapping up, and with it came some amazing new music. At the top of our latest R&B Season update is a collaboration from The Weeknd, Playboi Carti, and Madonna, which appears on the Canadian artist’s new HBO series, The Idol. After sharing the single, he spoke with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, where Abel Tesfaye revealed that writing and co-producing a Madonna album has been a longtime dream of his that we’ll hopefully see come to fruition in the future.

Following that we have an impressive offering from Burna Boy, “Sittin’ On Top Of The World,” which has been receiving rave reviews across social media so far. While Metron Boomin’s new Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse soundtrack is heavily focused on hip-hop, the renowned producer also linked up with James Blake for “Hummingbird.” Elsewhere, a collaborative effort between RJAE and A Boogie Wit da Hoodie called “Remember That,” also caught our attention.

Ty Dolla Sign is back for the second weekend in a row with his new “Motion” single. It follows his reunion with ex, Lauren Jauregui for their latest collaboration, “Wolves,” which also features Russ. Aside from that, we’ve also got love for another Canadian crooner, Roy Woods. He’s back with yet another must-listen song, this one called “Don’t Mind Me.” So far this year, he’s also given us “Young Boy Problems” and “Don’t Love Me,” both of which are still in rotation for many fans.

Our final pick of the week comes from “GOD DID” collaborator Fridayy, who linked up with Chris Brown on “Don’t Give It Away.” Together, the vocally talented duo made magic that’s the perfect end to our weekly roster. Zacari Brings A “Touch of God” To Our Weekly “R&B Season” Playlist Update

Just when you think our R&B Season playlist can’t get any hotter, another round of New Music Friday releases comes through blazing to light things up. Today (May 28) we have mostly collaborative efforts, though there is one solo offering that caught our eye. It comes from Zacari, and is called “Touch of God,” which is exactly what listening to the short and sweet title feels like. It marks the second drop of the year for the Top Dawg Entertainment artist, who previously linked up with Ab-Soul on “Motions” back in February.

From Rory’s I Thought It’d Be Different album we’ve picked two titles. The first, “Refill,” finds him connecting with Chiiild and Aáyanna. The second, “My Phone Can Die,” landed as a single ahead of the 13-track project, and features both Ari Lennox and James Fauntleroy. Other artists who appear on various songs include Emotional Oranges, THEY., Conway the Machine, GoldLink, REASON, and dvsn, among several others.

Lauren Jauregui proved that it’s not impossible to work with your ex this weekend, reconnecting with her former lover, Ty Dolla $ign on “Wolves.” The emotional song also includes bars from Russ, and is the sole collaborative effort on the former Fifth Harmony starlet’s new In Between EP. Our final pick of the week comes from Nonso Amadi and BEAM, the latter likely still riding the high of linking up with Beyoncé last summer for “ENERGY” from her RENAISSANCE album.

His latest joint effort is called “Killmanjaro,” and it appears on Amadi’s When It Blooms project that also landed on Friday. Further down on today’s round-up, you’ll find more must-listen May drops from names like Summer Walker, NxWorries, Jorja Smith, Janelle Monáe, and Omarion. Summer Walker & Childish Gambino Introduce Us To A “New Type” On Our “R&B Season” Playlist

Today’s R&B Season playlist update is a perfect mix of male and female talent, chiefly kicking off with a joint effort from Summer Walker’s new CLEAR 2: SOFT LIFE EP. The 9-track project has earned the Atlanta native comparisons to neo-soul queen Erykah Badu and found her working with J. Cole and Childish Gambino as guest collaborators. Elsewhere, Steve Lacy and Solange Knowles came through to aid the mother of three with production on her closing title. Her work with the Dreamville founder on “New Type” sits at the top of our weekly round-up, while “To Summer, From Cole” featuring Donald Glover closes things out later on.

We also heard from Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge together under their NxWorries moniker. Following their successful “Where I Go” track with H.E.R., the duo reunited to share “Daydreaming” ahead of this past New Music Friday (May 19). Speaking of the “Slide” songstress, she also took us alongside her on “The Journey” thanks to her latest single, which spans nearly four-and-a-half minutes.

The Weeknd’s rising artist, Chxrry22, also caught our attention with her latest. She first made her debut in 2022 with singles such as “The Falls,” “Call Me,” and “Sacrifice,” as well as her 7-track The Other Side project. Nearly halfway through 2023, the songstress is coming through with her first effort of the year, called “Worlds Away.” Any fans of Abel Tesfaye’s work over the years will certainly be able to appreciate why he’s backing Chxrry.

Finally, we have yet another collaboration for your listening consideration. This one comes from Maeta and the Free Nationals, and is called “Through The Night.” Further down on our playlist, you’ll also find arrivals from names like Jorja Smith, Janelle Monáe, and Keke Palmer, all of whom have been shining brightly in their respective careers. Janelle Monáe Brings Her “Lipstick Lover” To Our Weekly “R&B Season” Playlist

Janelle Monáe has been a favourite on the internet this past week, largely thanks to her sexually liberated antics. While announcing their highly anticipated follow-up to Dirty Computer, the Kansas City native shared an NSFW wet t-shirt clip on Twitter to promote her upcoming album‘s second single, “Lipstick Lover.” Fans thought they couldn’t possibly top that, but Monáe ultimately proved them wrong by flashing her bare breasts during a recent performance, causing yet another viral moment. While we don’t have an update on the singer’s wild adventures, we are happy to report her appearance on our weekly R&B Season playlist today, along with some other new favourites.

Jorja Smith made a triumphant return a few days ago with “Little Things,” marking her second single of 2023. The first, “Try Me,” landed in mid-April, also to positive reviews. Following that on our R&B Season round-up comes Remi Wolf’s “Prescription,” as well as an upbeat remix from Ciara. The mother of three opted to slow down her controversial “Da Girls” track with the help of Derrick Milano, creating more of a slow jam feeling for listeners tuning in.

Collaborations that caught our attention this New Music Friday include Tyla and Arya Starr’s “Girl Next Door,” as well as a joint effort from KayCyy and Gesaffelstein. The latter duo came together on “ROLL THE DICE,” with K handling lyrics while G took care of production. Closing things out comes a title from Keke Palmer’s first project in a decade, Big Boss. We absolutely suggest streaming the mother of one’s work entirety when you have time, but if you’re looking for a simple sample, we suggest you begin with “FR FR” over anything else on the tracklist.

Miguel’s New Single Lands At The Top Of This Week’s “R&B Season” Playlist: Stream

While many people prefer to listen to slow jams to get them through the colder months, we’re still bringing plenty of heat to our R&B Season playlist updates this spring. One of our recent favourites comes from Miguel, who shared his first new solo single in some time earlier this week. Called “Give It To Me,” the fully-expected sultry song boasts hypnotic production that only compliments the 37-year-old’s silky smooth voice. It remains unclear if he has plans to share more with fans later this year, though we’ll certainly remain hopeful.

Another noteworthy release comes from Halle Bailey’s work on The Little Mermaid soundtrack. Disney and the Atlanta native are both gearing up for the film’s release next month. Despite the backlash they’ve received for casting Ariel as a Black woman, the vocalist seems to be completely unbothered and is instead leaning into excitement. “Part of Your World,” one of the movie’s most recognizable tracks arrived on DSPs (and our R&B Season playlist) within the past few days, showcasing Bailey’s beautiful vocals. She’s obviously best known for singing alongside her sister, Chlöe, but this proves that Halle is more than capable of holding her own.

R&B legend Smokey Robinson came through with a sultry new album on Friday (April 28), called Gasms. The nine-track effort is featureless and finds the 83-year-old doing what he does best – setting a sensual mood for listeners with his iconic voice and musical sensibilities. We’ve picked the titular track as our favourite, though he previously shared “If We Don’t Have Each Other” and “How You Make Me Feel” as singles.

Our final pick is another solo effort, this one from Baby Rose’s Through and Through album. It’s called “Water,” and appears on the tracklist alongside efforts like “I Won’t Tell” with Smino” and “Go.” Stream this weekend’s round-up, exclusively on Spotify below. The Weeknd & Future Create A “Double Fantasy” On Our “R&B Season” Playlist

Our weekly Fire Emoji update had an undoubtedly healthy list of songs for your listening pleasure yesterday, but this Sunday (April 23), our R&B Season round-up is on the short and sweet side. Last time we checked in, we brought you fresh, must-hear tracks from the likes of Amir Obe, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Jorja Smith, Yung Bleu and Chris Brown. This time, it’s The Weeknd and Future leading the way on our list, thanks to their collaboration on “Double Fantasy.” It’s set to appear in the former’s upcoming HBO series, The Idol.

The Canadian has been teasing the joint effort for some time now, playing it on Instagram Live ahead of his appearance during Metro Boomin’s first Coachella set. Even after just hearing a teaser, some social media users felt confident in predicting that the single may be the “most toxic song of the century” thanks to the notorious reputations of its creators. It officially arrived on streamers this New Music Friday (April 21), leaving fans eagerly awaiting what else The Weeknd has in store for his show’s accompanying album later this year.

Bree Runway and Khalid also made waves with their first collaboration, “Be The One.” It marks the female artist’s 2023 debut, following 2022’s WHOA, WHAT A BLUR! EP in December. As for the American Teen hitmaker, we previously heard him on “Softest Touch,” “The Hard Way,” with PNAU, and “We Go Down Together” alongside Dove Cameron.

Our final R&B Season pick of the day comes from another Canadian favourite, Roy Woods. The song is called “Young Boy Problems,” and even earned the artist a co-sign from Drake, who he worked with on “Drama” in the earlier days of his career. Jorja Smith, Yung Bleu, & More Headline Latest “R&B Season” Playlist Update

The latest update to the R&B Season playlist features several noteworthy tracks from Jorja Smith, Yung Bleu, and Amir Obe. Each Sunday, HotNewHipHop highlights the hottest songs in the genre on the playlist from the last week. The venture mirrors the Fire Emoji playlist, which showcases the top weekly songs in hip-hop.

For Jorja Smith, her song, “Try Me,” is highlighted. The song comes five years after the release of her debut studio album, Lost & Found. It is also the debut track released on her new label FAMM. “I like this world that I’ve just come into. And I’m still figuring things out. Always figuring things out,” Smith said in a press statement. “This is the first time I’m putting stuff out there that I can connect with right now.”

Yung Bleu’s recent collaboration with Chris Brown, “Distant Lover,” is also included on this week’s R&B Season. The song comes as multiple artists have been criticized for working with Brown in recent weeks. Both Chloe Bailey and Lil Dicky have addressed the backlash in recent interviews. Bailey had worked with him on her new song, “How Does It Feel,” while Dicky collaborated with him back in 2018 on “Freaky Friday.”

In previous weeks, HNHH has added many other of the biggest tracks from 2023. Several songs off 6LACK’s latest project, Since I Have A Lover, made the cut in March. More recently, Daniel Caesar’s long-awaited NEVER ENOUGH album took center stage during an April update. Chlöe has also appeared on R&B Season with her “Body Do” single

Daniel Caesar’s “NEVER ENOUGH” Album Is The Main Event On Our “R&B Season” Update

Calling all R&B lovers – our weekly playlist is back with a slew of new must-hear songs for your consideration today (April 9). Of course, it’s Daniel Caesar’s long-awaited NEVER ENOUGH album taking centre stage this time around – namely two of the project’s beautiful collaborative efforts. The first is “Homiesexual,” on which the Canadian crooner teamed up with Ty Dolla $ign for the first time ever. Following that, later on in our round-up, comes “Buyer’s Remorse” featuring Omar Apollo, marking the duo’s second-ever joint effort.

Earlier in the week, female vocalist Mahalia gave us some R&B Season heat in the form of “Terms and Conditions.” The three-and-a-half-minute-long song marks her first release of 2023, following an undeniably successful run last year. The British artist made a name for herself with singles like “Letter To Ur Ex” and “Whatever Simon Says,” as well as an EP named after the former track. Afterward, she closed out 2022 with “Bag Of You,” which has since amassed upwards of 4.3 million streams on Spotify.

Elsewhere on our R&B Season playlist, we hear from THEY. and Fana Hues on “Comfortable.” The song comes from the group’s Nü Moon album, which arrived on New Music Friday (April 7) and also features Yung Bleu Bino Rideau, Phil Adé, Kacey Musgraves, and blackbear. Another noteworthy joint release that caught our attention comes from Austin Millz and the legendary Estelle, who come together this weekend on “Freeway.”

Our final recommendation comes in the form of a solo single from Leon Thomas, called “Crash & Burn.” Like Mahalia, this also marks his first arrival of 2023, and so far, fans have been showing it plenty of love. Chlöe’s “Body Do” Takes Centre Stage On This Weekend’s “R&B Season” Update

It’s Sunday once again, which means we’re back with another roundup of must-hear songs on our R&B Season playlist. While this weekend’s list is primarily female-dominated, we do have a few noteworthy titles from 6LACK’s latest project, Since I Have A Lover. The album marks his first since 2018’s East Atlanta Love Letter and has left listeners pleased since landing on Friday (March 24).

“Testify” is the first track to catch our attention, followed by “Temporary,” on which the Baltimore native collaborates with Don Toliver. The only other joint effort on the 19-song-long tracklist comes from the artist’s own partner, QUIN, on “wunna dem.” Over the past few weeks, other 6LACK releases like “Fatal Attraction” and “Talkback” have landed on our R&B Season update, as well as his album’s titular single.

HNHH R&B Season Playlist

Following that comes Yaya Bey’s latest, “exodus the north star,” which arrived as a part of a six-pack EP earlier this weekend. So far, other standout titles from the project include “on the pisces moon” and “ascendent (mother fxcker)” on which she worked with Exaktly. If you’re looking to experiment with new sounds, we highly recommend giving the short and sweet release a full listen when you have the time.

Victoria Monét came through with some serious R&B Season heat in the form of “Smoke” featuring Lucky Daye. As expected, the two artist’s voices beautifully collide while setting a sultry mood for listeners to enjoy. Finally, Chlöe closes out our latest lineup with her “Body Do” single as we eagerly await the arrival of her debut solo album, In Pieces, which is due to officially arrive on DSPs next Friday (March 31).
