“Lipstick Lover”: Lupita Nyong’o Auditions For Janelle Monae With Sultry Choreography

The final weeks of any year tend to bring out the reflective, nostalgic tendencies in us as we look back on all that’s transpired throughout 2023. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions all around the globe, but we’re focusing on the positive growth we’ve seen – particularly in Janelle Monae. The genre-bending artist went through something of a sexual revolution in the early part of the year, regularly flashing her breasts to live audiences watching her perform tracks from her latest album, The Age of Pleasure. Now that the LP has had time to settle, Monae is getting audition tapes from one of her close friends, Lupita Nyong’o, who seemingly has aspirations of appearing in a future visual.

On Monday (November 20), the Black Panther actress took to Instagram to share a clip of her recreating her pal’s hip-swinging choreography. “My official audition to be @JanelleMonae’s next #LipstickLover,” Nyong’o wrote in her caption. She looked as cool as ever in her black, green, yellow, and white two-piece set, her long, smooth legs supporting her slender frame while she leaned against a door and grooved along to the infectious beat.

Lupita Nyong’o Wants Her Next Role to Be in a Janelle Monae Music Video

“She’s like this,” Lupita tells the person recording, her brown eyes hidden behind oversized sunglasses. The 40-year-old then confidently swings from side to side while Monae beautifully sings, “Just wanna feel your hips on mine / I really got a thing for my lipstick lover, lover, lover, lover, lover.” When she came across the post last night, the “I Like It” hitmaker wrote a comment gassing Nyong’o up. “A leading lady💄👄🥰😘. The role is YOURS😍💄💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋,” she promised.

Now that Lupita Nyong’o is a single woman again, we can’t help but wonder if she has a lucky “Lipstick Lover” in her life. Earlier this fall she was out with Joshua Jackson at a concert, which also came after the announcement of his separation from Jodie Turner-Smith. Read more about that at the link below, and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

Janelle Monae Shows Off Dance Moves At Magic City Strip Club

In the world of music, reinvention is an essential component of an artist’s journey. It’s a process that allows them to explore new horizons, push boundaries, and challenge societal norms. Janelle Monáe, the multi-talented singer, and producer, has been doing just that over the past couple of years. Her transformation has been marked by a shift in her appearance. And a more liberating approach to her music and life. Known for her signature tuxedos and artful blend of R&B, funk, and Afrofuturism, Janelle Monáe has always been celebrated for her unique style and sound. Especially as of lately.

However, the Age Of Pleasure singer recently took her evolution to another level when she was spotted at Magic City in Atlanta. Monáe’s appearance at the renowned strip club in the heart of the city caught some by surprise. Futhermore, what caught everyone’s attention was not just her presence, but her bold choice to pole dance to her own music. Moreover, the video of Monáe’s impromptu performance has since circulated social media. In the clip, Monáe can be seen gracefully moving to the rhythm of her own song.

Janelle Monae Is No Stranger To Doing What She Wants

Moreover, this unexpected appearance at Magic City is just one facet of Monáe’s ongoing transformation. Her decision to reveal more of her body and embrace a more liberated approach to her music has been met with mixed reactions. Some applaud her for breaking free from the constraints of conventionality. Others have questioned the departure from her previous image. One recent example of being questioned is artist India.Arie who raised concerns. Subsequently, she expressed concern specifically about Megan Thee Stallion’s dancing and Janelle Monae’s breast exposure during their performances at the 2023 Essence Festival of Culture. In a comment on Instagram, India.Arie expressed her disapproval.

She emphasized the importance of considering context and exercising discernment. “The issue is what is CONTEXT,” India.Arie wrote. “Humanity does EVERYTHING. But does EVERYTHING BELONG IN A STAGE. No, is everything for KIDS? No, is everything for EVERY BODY? so when we as a culture make something like this main stream ~ it shows a lack of discretion [and] discernment.” “I LOVE Janelle AND Meg the way i love us all — AND i dont like this moment.” However, she continued. “Don’t bother debating me lol idc and I DO this. for 25 yrs i’ve done THIS. so. read ponder or don’t.” However, whether you view her recent activities as controversial or groundbreaking, one thing is certain: Janelle Monáe is unapologetically rewriting the rules of her own narrative and inviting us all to join her on this journey of self-discovery and artistic reinvention.

Janelle Monáe’s Begrudgingly Released Clean ‘Lipstick Lover’ Video Tries (But Mostly Fails) To Tame The NSFW Visual

These days, there tend to by only a small handful of music videos in a given year that could be considered a cultural event. Here in 2023, Janelle Monáe’sLipstick Lover” visual is definitely one of them, as the NSFW clip absolutely set the internet on fire earlier this month. Now, though, Monáe has broadened the audience of the clip with a new “clean” version (emphasis on the quotation marks).

Sharing the visual on Twitter, Monáe wrote, “Aight after much back and forth and private court dates i decided to release the sinsored ‘clean virgin’ of ‘Lipstick Lover’ against my will! It’s now avail on YouTube. I added 100 more pixels by hand so y’all bet not sneak and watch the original. Enjoy loves!”

Indeed, it’s true that there are now a bunch of pixelated portions of the video, but really, the point still comes across. There are still plenty of butts hanging around a pool, and the carefree, sex-positive nature of the party depicted in the video remains well intact here.

Reason Asks To Use Janelle Monáe’s Body “In The Most Respectful Way”

TDE signee Reason shared that he DM’d Janelle Monáe on Instagram to ask if he can use her body “in the most respectful way” for his album rollout. He posted the voice message that he sent Monáe on the platform, Friday.

“Hey Queen,” Reason began. “Um, I just wanted to ask respectfully, in the most endearing respectful way, I want to know if I can borrow ya titties for my rollout. I know this is asking a lot, but I’ve seen what your titties did for your rollout and I’m in need.”

He continued: “I’m in need of help for content every single day, Tik Tok, the algorithm is changing, the label wants me to go viral and I saw, it’s a very nice pair of titties also by the way, I saw what those titties did for you, but I was just wondering if you had a daily fee for your titties for my rollout. Um, let me know. I hope you don’t take this any type of way. Just a business transaction. All love. Respect to you queen.”

With his request, Reason is referencing the promotion of Monáe’s upcoming album, The Age of Pleasure. She began promoting the project, earlier this month, with the release of the single, “Lipstick Lover.” The music video for the song sees her showing off plenty of skin while singing the sensual lyrics. The album will release in full on June 9.

Janelle Monáe Gets Support From SZA Amidst “Self-Renaissance”

Janelle Monáe has fully returned to the spotlight. With the announcement of their upcoming album, The Age of Pleasure, and the release of their much-discussed single, “Lipstick Lover,” Janelle Monáe’s music comeback is in full swing. The singer and actor has been making headlines quite a bit lately, not only for their new music but also for their antics on stage and off. Videos of Monáe dancing at a private party have added fuel to the social media conversation about them. She has a devoted following across many genres thanks to their distinctive and varied musical style, which distinguishes them from imitators in the field.

Monáe recently spoke to Zane Lowe in an interview about the new album and single. There, they spoke about the inspiration behind the new single, “Lipstick Lover.” Apparently, the song is very much inspired by their own experiences leaving lipstick on people they’ve kissed. “That song… I’m like, ‘Why didn’t I write this song years ago?’ Today, I don’t have on any red lipstick, but I’m always in red lipstick,” Monáe said. “And there have been so many instances where I’ve made out with somebody at a party, and it’s dark… But when the lights come on, whoever I’ve made out with, lipstick all over their face.”

SZA Loves Seeing Monáe Express Themself

Janelle Monáe is taking charge of the rollout of their upcoming album, The Age Of Pleasure. After the release of the provocative “Lipstick Lover” music video, Monáe has definitely caught the attention of the public. The music video is in stark contrast to much of the earlier videos that the artist released in its NSFW nature. It prompted Cardi B to share an explicit post thirsting after the singer. Monáe’s mother, on the other hand, had some concerns about her child’s nudity. SZA, however, had nothing but praise for Janelle Monáe after the release.

SZA shared her support for Monáe publicly, commenting on the post above from RNB RADAR on Instagram. There, she expressed her admiration for the Monáe’s self-renaissance. “I love that it’s HER being free rn because people LOVE to box women in and claim that because your articulate respected and intelligent,” SZA said. “You can’t show your body or be sexual or anything else lol. It’s a ridiculous notion and I’m ALL FOR HER SELF RENAISSANCE.” What do you think of Janelle Monáe’s free new persona? Let us know in the comments below!

SZA Offered A Message In Support Of Janelle Monáe’s ‘Self Renaissance’: ‘I Love That It’s Her Being Free’

Janelle Monáe is firmly in control within the rollout of their forthcoming LP The Age Of Pleasure. As Uproxx’s Aaron Williams put it, “It’s the story of America, of being Black, of being queer, of being non-binary, and always fighting to be seen, to be heard, and to not just survive in a hostile world but thrive.”

All eyes are on Monáe after the release of “Lipstick Lover” and its salacious video. Cardi B was inspired to share a very NSFW post, Monáe’s mother had questions about her daughter’s “nude booty,” and Jason Isbell didn’t understand how anybody could possibly criticize the “Lipstick Lover” video because “there are some things we all just agree is awesome.”

SZA sides with Isbell. She commented on an RNB RADAR Instagram post about “Lipstick Lover,” expressing admiration for Monáe’s “self-renaissance.” (It should also be noted that The Age Of Pleasure is due out June 9, aka 6/9, which is very likely not coincidental.)

“I love that it’s HER being free rn because people LOVE to box women in and claim that because your articulate respected and intelligent [eye-rolling emoji],” SZA wrote. “You can’t show your body or be sexual or anything else lol . It’s a ridiculous notion and I’m ALL FOR HER SELF RENAISSANCE [hearts-as-eyes emoji].”

Monáe also repurposed a clip from the “Lipstick Lover” video as a Mother’s Day tribute on Sunday, May 14. See their post below.

Janelle Monáe’s Mom Reacts To NSFW “Lipstick Lover” Video

In honor of Mother’s Day, Janelle Monáe shared her mom’s reaction to watching her newest music video, “Lipstick Lover.” The piece, co-directed by Monáe and Alan Ferguson, features a substantial amount of nudity and sensual content. While Monáe’s mother said she likes the song, she did admit she “was hoping that big booty” would “go away.”

“Oh-ho… that’s cool. Only thing, though: Are you gonna be able to show that nude booty all the time on the… like, on the YouTube?” Monáe’s mother asked after watching the video. She responded, “Yeah, they said we could!”

I just was hoping that big booty go away for a second.”

Janelle Monáe’s Mom’s First Question After Seeing The NSFW ‘Lipstick Lover’ Video Was About The ‘Nude Booty’ In It

Yesterday (May 14) was Mother’s Day, and late last night, Janelle Monáe shined a light on her mom, specifically on her reaction to the NSFW “Lipstick Lover” video that has taken over the internet in recent days.

In a video shot the day before the “Lipstick Lover” video release, Monáe is on a video call with their mother, showing her the clip. After it ended, her mother reacted, “Oh-ho… that’s cool. Only thing, though: Are you gonna be able to show that nude booty all the time on the… like, on the YouTube?” Monáe responded, “Yeah, they said we could!”

Monáe then asked if her mom had any last-minute thoughts on the video before its release, and she responded, “Well, would be nice if you had a man’s butt up there.” She added, “It’s a nice song. If people don’t get hysterical about the booty so bad, if they just listen to the lyrics of the song, it gonna go triple.” Monáe asked what she meant by “triple” and after trying to find the right words, their mother said, “Triple golden.”

Wrapping up the convo, Monáe asked if her mom enjoyed the video and she replied, “Yeah. I just was hoping that big booty go away for a second.”

It’s a delightful video, so check it out above.

Janelle Monáe Brings Her “Lipstick Lover” To Our Weekly “R&B Season” Playlist

Janelle Monáe has been a favourite on the internet this past week, largely thanks to her sexually liberated antics. While announcing their highly anticipated follow-up to Dirty Computer, the Kansas City native shared an NSFW wet t-shirt clip on Twitter to promote her upcoming album‘s second single, “Lipstick Lover.” Fans thought they couldn’t possibly top that, but Monáe ultimately proved them wrong by flashing her bare breasts during a recent performance, causing yet another viral moment. While we don’t have an update on the singer’s wild adventures, we are happy to report her appearance on our weekly R&B Season playlist today, along with some other new favourites.

Jorja Smith made a triumphant return a few days ago with “Little Things,” marking her second single of 2023. The first, “Try Me,” landed in mid-April, also to positive reviews. Following that on our R&B Season round-up comes Remi Wolf’s “Prescription,” as well as an upbeat remix from Ciara. The mother of three opted to slow down her controversial “Da Girls” track with the help of Derrick Milano, creating more of a slow jam feeling for listeners tuning in.

HNHH R&B Season Playlist

Collaborations that caught our attention this New Music Friday include Tyla and Arya Starr’s “Girl Next Door,” as well as a joint effort from KayCyy and Gesaffelstein. The latter duo came together on “ROLL THE DICE,” with K handling lyrics while G took care of production. Closing things out comes a title from Keke Palmer’s first project in a decade, Big Boss. We absolutely suggest streaming the mother of one’s work entirety when you have time, but if you’re looking for a simple sample, we suggest you begin with “FR FR” over anything else on the tracklist.

Jason Isbell Is Super Confused By Backlash Over Janelle Monáe’s NSFW Video: ‘I Don’t Know WTF You People Want If It Isn’t That

It’s Janelle Monáe’s world, and we all live in it. Jason Isbell is just glad to be along for the ride. After several clips of Monáe flashing their bare breast to the crowd went viral (as did her “Lipstick Lover” visual), social media was flooded with varying opinions. While some begged for more, others weren’t pleased with the musician. However, Isbell is confused by the backlash over Monáe’s NSFW video.

He tweeted, “Wait, there are people who don’t like Janelle’s video? Seriously I don’t know wtf you people want if it isn’t that,” adding, “There are some things we all just agree it’s awesome so we can go about our business. Like gold, diamonds, Outkast, and this video.”

Isbell isn’t the only musician impressed by the video. Cardi B uploaded (and quickly deleted) a sexual meme to give her stamp of approval.

Over the last few weeks, the musician has let it all hang out as they count down the days to the release of their forthcoming album, The Age Of Pleasure. But, eventually, the musician decided to lean into their freedom of expression nixing their designer duds at the 2023 Met Gala for a string bikini which she then wore as she danced atop a New York bar.

Monáe doesn’t care about the backlash, writing on Twitter, “Titties out for the next 15 years.” The entertainer has had quite the about-face since the “Float” singer threatened to withhold future releases after a fan joked about the Monáe former conservative black-and-white wardrobe.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
