Raekwon Tributes Ol’ Dirty Bastard On 20th Anniversary Of His Death

Raekwon and Ol’ Dirty Bastard are two of the most beloved and iconic members of the Wu-Tang Clan. Both rappers dropped classic debuts in 1995. Despite their singular styles, managed to cross over and collab with other legendary artists. Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s tragic death in 2004 rocked Wu-Tang Clan to its core, and Raekwon took to Instagram on November 13 to pay his respects to the “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” rapper.

Raekwon posted a singular photo of Ol’ Dirty Bastard performing next to a lengthy message. “Miss you beloved,” he wrote. “Today marks 20 years you been gone and it’s not a day that goes by we don’t miss feeling your presence in the world.” Raekwon, who appeared on Ol’ Dirty’s classic 1995 song “Raw Hide,” also announced plans to tribute the rapper in Newark, New York. “At my grand opening in Newark’s very own @hashstoria location,” Rae explained. “We will be doing a tribute to your legacy by playing ya music throughout the day.” The Chef concluded his statement by noting how important Ol’ Dirty Bastard was to the success of Wu-Tang overall.

Raekwon Still Misses Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Presence”

“Thank you for believing in us and putting ya mighty crew on the map,” Raekwon wrote. “You will always remain general in my eyes. love you.” This is not the first time that the Chef has tipped his cap to Ol’ Dirty in the two decades since his death. The rapper’s classic 2009 sequel Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. 2 had a standout cut named after Ol’ Dirty: “Ason Jones.” “The first dude to say, ‘Yo, keep it real,’” Rae rapped on the song. “Yeah, the lover, the father, the hustler, the rap professor. Now, he with Allah, that’s a blessing.” A sample of O.D.B. talking is included at the end of the song.

Raekwon also came together with the rest of Wu-Tang to tribute Ol’ Dirty Bastard in 2005. O.D.B.’s old recordings were repurposed for the posthumous album A Son Unique. Rae was among the artists who appeared on the tracklist. He appeared on the posse cut “Intoxicated” and the single “I Go Through Life” alongside the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan. Raekwon is currently working on his eighth studio album.

Ghostface Killah Claims Modern Rappers Are Lacking One Particular Skill

Ghostface Killah can say what he wants. The Wu-Tang rapper has put out classic albums in multiple decades, and his latest, Set the Tone, proves that he hasn’t lost his touch. He’s one of the elite artists in the history of hip-hop, so it makes sense that he would have opinions on where the genre is going. Ghost was interviewed by Rolling Stone on May 22, and he took the current generation of rappers to task for being bad at one specific thing: storytelling. He wants to hear more narratives set to song.

Ghostface asserted that the only storytellers in hip-hop are the ones from his generation. He even cited some of his fellow Wu-Tang Clan members as examples. “I don’t hear n**gas doing storytelling no more, man,” he lamented “There might be Nas. You might still got [Slick] Rick out there doing it, Raekwon [and] GZA.” The rapper blamed this pivot away from storytelling on the desire to make songs that play well in the clubs. “A lot of stuff be regular darts, regular raps,” he added. “Everything with this new generation is about clubs.”

Ghostface Killah Laments Music Being Made For Clubs Only

Ghostface Killah then targeted the current wave of female rappers. He felt they were the most egregious examples of style over substance, and pointed to 90s stars like Foxy Brown and Lauryn Hill as examples of well-balanced artists. “The Lauryn Hills of this sh*t [are] gone,” he told Rolling Stone. “Even the Foxys and sh*t like that, like a lag came over it. But all this other ‘lick my a*s,’ ‘my butthole brown’ sh*t, it’s like … it’s too much.” Ghost didn’t mention any specific names when it came to rappers he didn’t like, but the lyric he used is likely a reference to Sexxy Red.

The one modern rapper who impresses Ghostface Killah is Kendrick Lamar. During a recent interview with Juan Epstein, the Wu-Tang rapper claimed that Lamar made him up his game. “That’s why when I did the record with Kendrick, it was like, ‘Okay… I sat with it and was like — I sent him two verses,” Ghost recalled. “I sent him a ‘just in case’ one. Like, ‘N**ga, if that don’t go, this one [will].’” It probably helps that Lamar has made some of the most ambitious concept albums in hip-hop history. Game will always recognize game.

Raekwon Kicks Off New Cannabis Business In New Jersey

The Wu-Tang Clan icon continues to win as of late. Raekwon is building upon a top-notch rap legacy, that is now including opening his very own cannabis franchise. The dispensary is expected to open its doors with the plan to build it in New Jersey’s capital, Newark. The company is called Hashtoria and you can find it on Instagram by simply searching “Hashstoria.” However, there is still just one more obstacle to clear before Hashstoria can provide its services to the public.

They are still requiring the final approval from the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission for things to get moving. Additionally, the approval was given by the board during the meeting last month on July 24 after the first denial to open a Class 5 cannabis retail facility. Furthermore, Raekwon is not tackling this on his own, though. Charlamagne Tha God is joining forces with the Wu-Tang artist as one of the main supporters of this exciting project. He was elated as well to be a part of this opportunity commenting under Raekwon’s Instagram post saying, “I Love The Brick City and I love that we get to create jobs for our people We Thank GOD for it ALL!”
