Don’t Forget About Latto

2024 has been an embarrassment of riches for rap fans. Breakout projects like Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal, solid career evolutions such as Megan Thee Stallion’s Megan, and assertive declarations of conflict like Kendrick Lamar’s GNX have had seismic effects on the landscape of hip-hop this year, upending a decade of status quo and shaking up the outlook for the future of rap.

Amid all that, though, it feels like some stuff got lost in the shuffle; namely, Atlanta superstar Latto, whose third studio album Sugar Honey Iced Tea was not only her best, but did what each of the above-mentioned releases did — all in one sturdy collection of 17 versatile tracks. Fortunately, Latto’s tour for the project brought a welcome reminder of all that she’s capable of and just how big of an impact she’s had herself lately.

Firstly, it’s impossible to start anywhere but on Latto’s importance for the girlies. Women in rap have often expressed their feeling of being outsiders in the genre, calling it a “male dominated” culture in which women are not just a minority, but are boxed into just one or two archetypes. Newer rappers like Cardi B, Doja Cat, and Megan Thee Stallion have done a bunch of needed work to carve out space for women in rap, but in the past eight years of going to their shows, never have I ever felt quite so outnumbered by women as at YouTube Theater on Sunday night (December 1), seemingly all of them decked out in Latto’s signature leopard print.

No exaggeration, the ratio had to be 20 women to every one dude. They even commandeered the men’s restrooms; I’ve seen this happen before but never to the point that there’s a line for both. Sure, women rappers have created women-friendly spaces on their tours, but Latto’s crowd took this to even greater heights than any of her peers — which makes sense, because at heart, she’s a girl’s-girl, sharing her platform with openers in Karrahbooo and Mariah The Scientist who have been unfairly perceived in relation to their relationships with men. Flo Milli also popped out for a surprise performance of her hit, “Never Lose Me” during Latto’s sole wardrobe change (from the aforementioned animal print to baggy pants and crop top Crenshaw sweater. Long live Nipsey Hussle).

And while her main conflict with another woman spawned from a complaint about her genre classification, the setlist for the Sugar Honey Iced Tea Tour pointedly leaves out Latto’s biggest pop hit, “Big Energy.” Instead, the Georgia peach focused intently on her latest album and the more hardcore hits from her previous projects, emphasizing her rap credentials. This turned out to be a wise move, as some of the biggest crowd pops came for trap anthems like the breakdown on “Big Mama,” “B*tch From The Souf,” “Chicken Grease,” “Muwop,” and 2024 singles “Put It On Da Floor,” “Sunday Service,” and “Brokey.”

As much fuss as rap fans made over Doechii’s raps on songs like “Boom Bap” and “Nissan Altima,” Latto’s latest proved she could get equally introspective on “Georgia Peach,” which opened the show, and “S/O To Me,” to which fans may have attributed some Drake influence, but is all Latto’s story and pen. Speaking of Drake, his verses were clipped from just about every song he would have appeared on — even during the warmup DJ set — but hey, at the time Latto was plotting out the tour, including him was a good business move. It wasn’t until hometown hero Kendrick Lamar lyrically dismantled him and brought out his inner Karen that former collaborators started turning on him.

But for all the attention heaped onto the phenomenon that was “Not Like Us,” in a just world, Latto would have received just as much for “Put It On Da Floor” and “Sunday Service,” — which, if you’ll remember, actually kicked off much of the combative energy of 2024 alongside Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hiss.” Latto may not have whacked her rival quite as directly, but the fact that her bellicose invitations to step into the arena both reached the Hot 100 (the latter at No. 100, while the former peaked at No. 13) shows she’s got just as much of a knack for making battle rap club friendly as the Compton native.

If Sugar Honey Iced Tea is a reminder to the world that Latto is not to be overlooked, then the tour is a welcome reminder of the reminder. Latto has spent years proving her rap cred, then spent much of the past year proving her pop potential. But while many of her predecessors and peers might have been happy to take the bag and coast, Latto went back to the lab to double down on demonstrating her rap roots — and polishing her stage show, which has somehow massively improved since the last time I saw her live at The Novo while working on our cover story on her. She belongs in the conversation about the best rappers out today, and she’s making sure you never forget it.

Latto Says She Knew That “Put It On Da Floor” Would Be A Hit

Last year, Latto had her breakthrough commercial moment with her song “Big Energy.” The track was an absolute smash hit that ended up as one of the highest-selling songs of 2022. She didn’t slow down much going into 2023 with her next hit “Put It On Da Floor” dropping early this year. While the song did initially make a splash, it was once Cardi B teamed up for a remix that it hit its peak. After debuting at number 13 on the Hot 100 the song hovered in the top 50 for months.

“I ain’t gonna lie, ‘Put It On Da Floor’ I knew was gonna go,” she begins after being asked if she can tell which songs will be hits. She goes on to describe it as the track she’d “been looking for.” After previewing the song at Coachella she reportedly wanted to drop it but her label thought it wasn’t ready. She decided to go ahead and drop it and the track became a hit. At the end of the clip, she pats herself on the back for her vision. In the comments, fans agree. “She ate it up & then Cardi B was chefs kiss! Definitely still playing it,” one of the top comments reads. Check out the interview clip and fan reactions below.

Latto Knows When A Song Will Be A Hit

If Latto really does recognize a hit when she hears one, then she must have lit up for “Seven.” Her collaboration with K-pop star Jung Kook was an instant smash debuting at the number-one spot on the Hot 100. Though it isn’t technically a rap song, the track still made Latto the first rapper to appear at the top spot on the Hot 100 in 2023.

The song just hit another impressive milestone. It officially became the fastest song to hit 1 billion streams in Spotify history. The track currently sits a just over a billion streams and with Jung Kook’s new album due to drop this week it could get a substantial boost. What do you think of Latto claiming that she knows if a song will be a hit or not? Let us know in the comment section below.

Latto & Coi Leray’s Supposedly Squashed Feud Has Gotten Even Messier Now That Their Parents Are Involved

Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s personal motto is: When they go low, we go high. That might work for her, but in the world of hip-hop, where feuding proves to be lucrative, turning the other cheek will never fly. Rappers Latto and Coi Leray’s bubbling beef is just one example of this.

What was thought to be a squashed feud has gotten even messier thanks to a new development: They got their parents involved. They each mentioned the other’s bodies in their respective songs, “Put It On Da Floor” (Latto) and “Isabel Marant” (Coi Leroy), which led fans to believe their beef was at an end. However, Latto’s recent verse on Young Nudy’s “Peaches & Eggplant (Remix)” has kicked things into overdrive.

“He wanna know if it’s real or it’s fake / I got a peach on the back like a plate / I got him eatin’ my booty on tape / I might expose him like 1090 Jake / He don’t eat pussy, he gots to go / Give me that neck like Benzino / Give me that neck like, ‘Where it go?’/One thumb in my bootyhole,” rapped Latto.

Well, Coi didn’t take kindly to Latto’s joke about her father Benzino’s neck. Shortly after, she took to her X (formerly Twitter) page to request the help of her followers. “Someone find me a pic of Karen,” wrote Coi, seemingly referring to Latto’s Caucasian mother.

On Saturday, September 8, Coi shared her father’s response to the lyrical jab. In a text message exchange with Coi, Benizo wrote, “She admires you. They all do. Just stay focused,” adding, “I got the most famous neck on Earth.”

Latto Deems “Put It On Da Floor” To Be The Best Song Of The Summer This Year

Lotto’s “Put It On Da Floor,” in its original or remixed versions, had the rap game in a chokehold this past summer. Maybe you didn’t notice it if you’re not a fan of the 777 MC, but it was one of the hits that carried through the entire summer months. As such, it’s only natural that she would declare her own track the song of the summer. During a recent interview with Complex, the 24-year-old spoke on how that track became an organic hit thanks to people using it in social media trends. What’s more is that she said she didn’t really aim for it to have that effect, but is incredibly appreciative of the support and reception.

“That song got my heart,” Latto remarked to the publication. “That song was just so effortless. It was really all done in one day. I wasn’t trying to make the song of the summer. It’s a street record. It was fun. It was for the culture.” Of course, that could just be all talk, but if everyone knew exactly how to make a smasher, then the hits don’t become hits at all when compared to each other.

Latto Crowns “Put It On Da Floor” The Song Of The Summer

Elsewhere in their conversation, the Columbus-born rapper also spoke on the state of rap today, its forefathers, the good hands it lays in, and its perceived dwindling in commercial success. “You got to pay respect to the people who came before, who made any of this even possible,” Latto expressed. “And then aside from that, I’m a real lover of music. I don’t just do this just for the money and to get cute and get my makeup and hair done. I really love what I do. My heart is for music. So I have a different type of respect for the genre.”

Meanwhile, that respect is evident when it comes to her efforts to uplift other female artists in the game. Sure, there’s beef and feuds in between, mostly driven by warring fanbases and a misogynistic tendency to pit femcees against each other. Still, those exceptions don’t define the rule, and the amount of women in hip-hop that jumped on “Put It On Da Floor” is a testament to that. Coi Leray Name-Dropped Latto In A New Song Snippet, Despite Not Taking To Kindly When The Rapper Mentioned Her

Apparently, Coi Leray has changed her view on her name-dropping policy within your music. In April, Latto mentioned Coi in her song “Put It On Da Floor.” After getting wind of the track, Coi took to social media to unleash a string of firey posts commending Latto’s actions. Latto cleared the air during her Coachella appearance, declaring that she wasn’t taking aim at Coi but rather showing her love. Eventually, Coi admitted that she overreacted, officially ending the short-lived feud.

Now that their short-lived feud is over, Coi took a page from her fellow entertainer’s book by incorporating Latto’s name in her upcoming song. In an Instagram video captioned, “Rager Girl Activated,” Coi lip-synced to the record while in the studio.

“Yeah, I’m on they ass / Hop up on that couch and roll a Latto out the bag / I don’t need a stylist they don’t f*ck with Coi Leray / Tried to count me out, but now I’m big as Trippie Redd,” rapped Coi. The line references Latto’s stanza in “Put It On Da Floor,” when she said, “Smokin’ on that gas, blunt big as Coi Leray.”

Coi did put out a call to her fellow emcees to join together for one massive all-women mega track. Maybe this is the first step to getting the ball rolling.

Latto Warned A Fan That They’d Get Their ‘Ass Beat’ If They Continued To Throw Stuff At Her

It appears fans haven’t learned that artists don’t like when you throw sh*t at them mid-performance. But if they haven’t learned yet, they’re most certainly going to learn today.

During a performance at Rolling Loud Germany, rapper Latto had some words for a fan who through something at her while she was performing her hit single, “Put It On Da Floor.” Thankfully, she didn’t let this fan mess up her flow.

“You’ll get your ass beat,” Latto rapped, not missing a beat as she continued to “Throw it again. Throw it again. I’ll beat your ass. Throw it again.”

In recent months, several artists have had objects thrown at them while they were performing. Bebe Rexha was recently hit with a phone while performing in New York City. Several fans threw panties and brassieres at Drake during a stop on his and 21 Savage’s It’s All A Blur Tour. Last month, one fan handed Pink a wheel of cheese during a performance on her Summer Carnival Tour — but that wasn’t nearly as bizarre as a fan handing the singer the ashes of her dead mother.

You can see a clip of Latto’s performance above.

Boosie Badazz Reacts To Omeretta The Great’s “Put It On Da Floor” Remix: “#CloutChasin”

At this point in her career, Omeretta The Great has become known for stirring up controversy with her lyrics – she doesn’t seem to mind, though. On Friday (June 30), the Atlanta-based artist closed the month with her “Put It on Da Floor (RettaMix)” which finds her name-dropping several key players close to the YSL RICO trial. Omeretta appears to defend Gunna, who was released earlier this year on a plea deal, with her bars, while name-dropping several male rappers who have been throwing shade his way recently.

“They talking bout Baby making disses, I guess he picking a side / But this Atlanta business, someone tell Boosie be quiet,” the 27-year-old spits. “I heard that Durk all on the ‘gram tryna boost up his pride / He sending disses at lil Gunna when Lil Y be outside,” she continues. In the hours since the track has dropped, the recently incarcerated entertainer has shared his thoughts on Twitter.

Boosie Badazz Responds to Omeretta’s “Put It On Da Floor (RettaMix)”

“[Omeretta], get mat at what [your] city doing 🐀,” his indirect message to The Great began. “Don’t get mad at me lol. I see the play 😂. Who you trying to get a feature with?” Boosie asked, assuming that the black-haired beauty is attempting to further her career by using his name. “SMH. #CloutChasin, just keep rapping 🔥. Hopefully your time coming,” he concluded, throwing shade at Omeretta’s distance from the spotlight in proximity to names like Ice Spice, Latto, and Coi Lerray, for example.

Despite his own legal woes, Boosie Badazz has been one of the most vocal rappers in terms of expressing disdain for Gunna’s alleged snitching. While at the BET Awards earlier this month, he spoke with the press on the red carpet about exactly why he has so much hatred for informants. Omeretta The Great’s “Put It On Da Floor (RettaMix)” Features Bars About Lil Baby, Boosie Badazz, And Gunna

Atlanta-based rap diva Omeretta The Great is causing a stir with some of the lyrics in her latest release. Of course, it’s not the first time she’s done so. Back in 2022, the rising starlet’s “Sorry Not Sorry” sparked a debate about which rappers are really from Atlanta. That discussion appears to have since been settled. Instead, Omeretta has moved on to rhyming about more timely matters, such as the YSL RICO trial.

More specifically, the 27-year-old got a few things off her chest regarding those who have been dissing Gunna. Countless leaders in the hip-hop world have renounced the DS4Ever artist after he took a plea deal, either through their words or actions. His recent a Gift & a Curse project seems to have won him back some favour, but still, Gunna is a long way off from the position he used to be in prior to his arrest.

Omeretta The Great Challenges Lil Baby, Boosie Bad Azz, And More To ‘Put It On Da Floor’ In Her New Freestyle

Latto‘s latest single, “Put It On Da Floor” has proven to be one of the buzziest hip-hop tracks of the year. Though she doesn’t specifically diss any rapper by name (despite a line many took as shade toward Coi Leray), she keeps all of her opps on notice. Additionally, several rappers have dropped freestyles over the track.

The latest comes from Latto’s fellow Atlanta rapper Omeretta The Great, who leaves no name unchecked.

On her freestyle, she addresses rapper Lil Baby dissing Gunna over rumors he took a plea deal, as Lil Durk, and New Orleans rapper Boosie Bad Azz, both of whom also dissed Gunna.

“They talking bout Baby making disses, I guess he picking a side / But this Atlanta business, someone tell Boosie be quiet / I heard that Durk all on the ‘gram tryna boost up his pride / He sending disses at lil Gunna when Lil Y be outside,” she raps.

This isn’t the first time Omeretta’s bar have been the subject of controversy. Last February, her song “Sorry Not Sorry” caused quite a stir, as she questioned the legitimacy of people from certain neighborhoods who claim to be from Atlanta.

Latto and Cardi B Have Song Of The Summer Momentum With ‘Put It On Da Floor Again’

On a night celebrating 50 years of hip-hop, the BET Awards on Sunday (June 25) got to witness the “Big Latto Show.”

“When it comes to Big Latto and DJ Von, it’s always on the floor!” her official tour DJ said.

Nominated for Best Collaboration and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Latto’s “Put It On Da Floor” performance was inspired by her Walmart runs with the gang on TikTok, taking the supermarket to Culture’s Biggest Night as she energized the crowd with choreography and a bit of extra sauce to emphasize some of her lyrics. It got everyone dropping low — even Boosie Badazz, who fell hard on his ass.

Wearing an all-white outfit that mirrored a plastic bag with “I been acting brand new” in red letters as its logo, her performance concluded with plastic bags being thrown at her feet. She ripped out of her top like she was, ahem, acting brand new as the lights when dark, and the camera zoomed in on “RIP Shawty Lo” to pay respect to his song “Dunn Dunn,” which Latto references in her hook.

Later in the evening, Latto won Best Female Hip-Hop Artist over Cardi B, Coi Leray, GloRilla, Ice Spice, Megan Thee Stallion, and Nicki Minaj. Visibly excited on stage, Latto said she wasn’t going to cry this year.

“Shout out to all the other women in the category, all the women to pave the way for this to even be possible,” Latto said. “This category is going crazy this year. Shout out to some women I think should’ve been in the category: Doechii, Maiya the Don, Flo Milli, Mello Buckzz, TiaCorine. Shout out to all the women, we killing it. This is the year of women. Hopefully, we gonna see an all-female tour very soon.”

The accolade doesn’t lie. Latto’s time is now. Fans are obsessed with shouting back the opening line, “Rip me out the plastic, I been acting brand new” when they hear “Put It On Da Floor” and “Put It On Da Floor Again,” the song’s remix with Cardi B. It’s a memorable lyric that fueled a “Rip Me Out The Plastic” TikTok challenge that has people embracing being fresh out of the box in appearance, hairstyles, nail transformations, academic achievements… you name it.

The 24-year-old rapper’s latest single finds her swinging the pendulum from the upbeat, pop sound heard in “Lottery” and “Big Energy” back to familiar territory: she’s popping off over a hard-hitting beat. “Put It On Da Floor Again” is bold and addictive, with bars on bars for captions from both Big Latto and Bardi. It has all the right ingredients to deem it the song of the summer, following a formula that Latto has mastered as a Gen Z artist who keeps her Jackpots engaged through social media, where she talks directly to them, and curates her singles for a TikTok generation who consumes them religiously.

Produced by Go Grizzly, Squat Beats, and Pooh Beatz, Latto’s original version, “Put It On Da Floor,” was released officially on streaming services on April 21, with the video serving as a Coachella 2023 recap that seemingly responded to claims that she doctored photos of her crowd. Latto’s versatility as a hitmaker shows in how much Clayton County has raised her, never going too mainstream to infuse a song with explicit lyrics and Atlanta strip club swagger.

When she was catching flack for the change-up in style for “Big Energy,” she told Uproxx in our 2021 December cover story, “I wanted to push myself. I wanted to challenge myself. Honestly, when you’ve been rapping since eight years old, you got to find new inspiration and new sparks. I just wanted to try something different and I didn’t really give a fuck whether people liked it or they didn’t because this was for me.” The point is, Latto is finally free to rap about what she wants to rap about after her “Big Energy” moment, as long as it remains meaningful to her.

Latto is an example of someone who takes it on the chin and keeps pushing. It’s why people love her immense Capricorn energy too. She hustles every new single like it’s the next one to pop regardless of outside forces working against her. Early predictions indicated that the contenders for “Song of the Summer” were Lil Uzi Vert’s “Just Wanna Rock” and Coi Leray’s “Players,” both Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits. But the pool has now widened to include not only “Put It On Da Floor Again,” but Sexyy Red’s “Pound Town,” IDK’s “Pinot Noir,” DaBaby’s “SHAKE SUMN,” and Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar’s “The Hillbillies.” Depending on who you ask, there’s no clear winner yet.

Latto’s strategy of doing a remix extends the life cycle of her record just like “Big Energy” getting a remix by Mariah Carey and DJ Khaled, which helped it move from No. 14 to No. 3 on the Hot 100 in 2022. This time around, Latto showed her Jackpots that Cardi B would be on “Put It On Da Floor Again” by participating in her own “Rip Me Out the Plastic” challenge for the reveal. Cardi B’s Midas touch helped boost streams previously when she was a guest feature on GloRilla’s “Tomorrow 2” and Kay Flock’s “Shake It.”

Since “Put It On Da Floor Again” released on June 2, Latto has been captured at strip clubs rapping along to the song, throwing fresh ones on the floor with a plastic bag over her head. By mid-June, “Put It On Da Floor Again” debuted at No. 13 and is currently at No. 39 on the Hot 100 in the week ending on July 1, supporting Cardi B’s streak of working with new female rappers and keeping the unity strong.

Cardi B has been a fan of Latto since 2020, where you can pull receipts of her talking to Bardi Gang about her and encouraging her to drop “Another Nasty Song” by teasing its lyrics. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion also featured Latto in the “WAP” video alongside breakout stars like Normani, Rosalía, Sukihana, and Rubi Rose because Cardi liked her music and believed she would break into the mainstream.

“I am so proud,” Cardi told Latto during an IG Live before the midnight release of “Put It On Da Floor Again.” “’Cause I have been in the studio for a couple of months, and it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, I want her to win so bad.’” She added the record inspired her to return to the booth after dealing with anxiety over releasing music.

“I’ve been patiently waiting my turn,” Latto replied. “I have seen her probably two-three times. I probably sent her two-three songs and she always responds every time, the realest bitch ever. And it just ended up being the time.”

“Put It On Da Floor Again” is incredibly catchy because Latto and Cardi B are genuine friends. In interviews, Latto has given praise to Cardi B for being in her corner, sharing advice on things she’s done before, and remaining focused. The video features cameos by the producer Go Grizz, Cardi B’s husband Offset, and Louisiana State University forward Angel Reese. Latto and Cardi B’s on-screen chemistry is cute as they turn up at a house party and a high-end jewelry store. They are having so much fun that it adds to the song’s playfulness when you hear it outside.

Both are about finding organic collaborators that aren’t manufactured by their labels or A&Rs. That’s why you hear Cardi B matching her cadence and flow, taking extra care in ensuring every line just had enough words. “I had to make sure the bars weren’t too long and they weren’t too short,” Cardi said during an IG Live breaking down her verse while munching on some Popeye’s. “Every single time I kept rapping I was like, ‘God fucking damn, I feel like I’m missing a word. And then we would add a word and now it’s too much fucking words. It was kinda hard, but we made it.”

To have a shot at the Song of the Summer title is making a record that’ll be undeniably everywhere. Latto and Cardi B are working “Put It On Da Floor Again” at every major concert appearance so far, performing it at Summer Jam 2023 and Birthday Bash ATL when 21 Savage brought them out. The impact is starting to be felt, where people bring plastic bags to the club to rip themselves out of it and court correspondents are dropping lyrics during trial recaps to lighten the mood. The momentum includes getting her friends Yung Miami and GloRilla to do their own versions, a nostalgic nod to blog-era freestyles.

There are still plenty of days of summer left to crown a champion. If this prediction becomes a spoiler, “Put It On Da Floor Again” is going down in history as one of those songs leading a cultural reset of rap fans embracing female rap anthems and their ratchet sides again.
