DMX’s Estate Arranges Some Of His Most Powerful Prayers On “Let Us Pray: Chapter X”

DMX’s legacy will always be remembered by hip-hop and its fans. He was truly a one-of-a-kind artist, and his impact on the genre is bigger than some may realize. Part of what separated him from his contemporaries was his spirituality. Across his discography, the New York native was always including reflections and prayers wherever he felt necessary. It’s not too often that a rapper, especially in the non-Christian hip-hop space, to be this open about his beliefs. Usually, that stuff is kept private. But again, DMX was a one-of-one, and it’s why receiving Let Us Pray: Chapter X is such a blessing.

This is his second posthumous album, and it’s maybe the most powerful listen of the year. Four prayers that “reflect upon the depth, emotionality, and spirituality of DMX” are here, in addition to their instrumentals. It’s almost as if the latter are added for the listener to do their own meditations and supplications. Giving these spoken words extra weight are the terrific arrangements from Warryn Campbell. He’s done a lot of work on Kanye West’s more religious albums. Killer Mike, Snoop Dogg, MC Lyte, Lecrae, and RoyzNoyz Orchestra are just few who also contributed their sacred thoughts to the album. Overall, his first official effort into a more gospel-centric listen is well-executed and worth checking out and thinking deeply about.

Today in Hip-Hop History: The Notorious B.I.G.’s Posthumous Third LP ‘Born Again’ Dropped 24 Years Ago

On this day in Hip Hop history, the late Notorious B.I.G. released his second posthumous album, Born Again. This project was a compilation album featuring old recorded verses over newer beats with guest features. The album had a high reception rate, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and selling 485,000 albums in the first week. It sold so well that it was certified double platinum a month and seven days after its release.

The album’s critical reception was mixed, to say the least. Many critics were stuck in between whether this album was merely a way for Bad Boy Records to cash in on an opportunity or a tribute album to arguably the best rapper of all time. Rolling Stone wrote that the “album won’t damage his legacy, but Born Again won’t improve that legacy much either.” Late in 2004, the magazine stated that “The posthumous Born Again proved Biggie was still dead, but his place in the MCs Hall of Fame remains untouchable.” Whether or not these reviews ring true to listeners is up for debate, but what is certain is that the star-studded cast of features on this project definitely helped Biggie flex his abilities even from the grave. Features on the project included greats such as Busta Rhymes, Redman, Method Man, Missy Elliott, Ice Cube, and Snoop Dogg and although these are titans of rap, none of them were able to outshine the Notorious B.I.G. For Biggie fans, this project was a gift from the afterlife. It has become a must-have among all diehard fans of the late king of New York.  The album made appearances on the top music charts all over the world and has sales that continuously increase due to the successes of Biggie in his life. After this project, Bad Boy released one last posthumous album titled Duets: The Final Chapter in 2005.

Juice Wrld’s Estate Fulfills The Rapper’s Dream By Dropping “Best Friend” With Fall Out Boy

It’s been a contentious weekend for Juice WRLD fans since his estate finally put out The Party Never Ends. It’s the supposed final album overall from the late and beloved Chicago multi-talent. With so much more in the vault, it’s sort of hard to definitively say that this third posthumous release will be the one to leave off on. As we said, the rapper and singer’s supporters are having incredibly mixed feelings on the final product. With that in mind, there’s a chance the act’s team may reconsider their previous statements about it being the last LP ever. Despite the harsh feedback from listeners and other hip-hop names, they are getting the stamp of approval for this one move.

That would be the fact that Juice WRLD’s reps were able to put together a collaboration with pop rock band, Fall Out Boy. Fans have said that this is something that both artists were wanting to do when Juice was still with us. Besides having a mutual respect and admiration for one another, Fall Out Boy is actually a Chicago-based band. Because of that, the fact that this now exists in some form now is special enough in the eyes of the fans. Patrick Stump, the lead singer for the band, and Juice even get to share the chorus in the waning moments. On the surface, this might be a random collab, but deep down, this one means a lot to quite a few people.

Darling, I was wondering if I can
Put a yellow diamond ring on your left hand, uh
Married to that money, he’s my best man
You my lover, you my fighter, you my best friend
And we in it ’til the world ends
A understatement is me calling you my girlfriend

Juice Wrld Fans Hate “The Party Never Ends,” The Last Posthumous LP

After fans criticized the cover of Juice WRLD’s last posthumous album, The Party Never Ends, last week, they continued to disparage the album upon its release on Friday. Passed away in 2019 at 21 years old, the third and final afterlife release has been dissected relentlessly online. While the late rapper’s devoted followers eagerly anticipated the release, the project has been met with criticism, with fans arguing it falls short of the high standards Juice WRLD set during his career. Fans blame the superstar’s team for the album’s concept and direction.

Fans expressed their distaste for the album on social media. One user tweeted, “The last ever juice WRLD album the fans will ever stay up for, meant to honor his legacy and how diverse his talent was. And they infest it with more dog posthumous features, mixing, and depressive tracks. The mainstream will never be able to see how good he really was.” Another tweeted, “How tf is this the album they’re gonna drop after waiting 3 extra years? It’s unbelievable that they picked these songs instead of all the bangers Juice WRLD made. It literally ruins his legacy because of all the hype that was built, just for them to drop the most mid-songs.”

JuiceWrld Fans Ain’t Feelin The Last Album, The Party Never Ends

The Party Never Ends follows the legend’s 2021 album Fighting Demons. With songs like “Already Dead,” “Burn,” and “Wandered To LA,” the album explored the Chicago native’s inner demons. As of December 2021, the album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, but at #1 on the Billboard Hip-Hop & R&B charts. Fighting Demons was Juice Wrld’s second #1 posthumous album of the three.

Born Jarad Higgins, Juice Wrld tragically passed in 2019 after suffering a seizure at Chicago’s Midway Airport. Emergency responders reported he was bleeding from the mouth upon arrival. The loss sent shockwaves throughout hip-hop. The one-of-a-kind recording artist left behind a legacy defined by vulnerability and raw emotion in his lyrics.

Juice Wrld Wrestles With Addiction & Anxiety On “Party By Myself”

There’s some belief/hope that The Party Never Ends by Juice WRLD will not be the final album. However, his estate continues to affirm that it will be. With that said, this title may be a reflection that even though this could be the last hurrah, the rapper’s current discography and legacy will never end. But in that same breath, the reason we mentioned that there’s hope that more music is coming is because of the fanbase’s view on the tape. Some have been highly critical of its quality, with folks in this camp being of the mindset that this is not how Juice would have made this album.

Additionally, DJ Scheme shared similar feelings, especially in relation to multi-genre hitmaking producer benny blanco’s inclusion. He felt the promotion and overall execution were off. But still, there are some redeemable traits to the project. “Party By Myself” feels like early classic Juice with the sad guitar loops, slow tempo, all while he sounds distraught and lost. It checks all the boxes for fans of his who enjoyed his openness to talk about his own personal issues like addiction, loneliness, and anxiety. “Party By Myself” also hits due to its earworm melody and chorus. Overall, the plan to release The Party Never Ends is up for debate. But there are some replayable tracks, with “Party By Myself” being one.

Today In Hip Hop History: Tupac Shakur’s First Posthumous Album ‘Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory’ Was Released 28 Years Ago

Makaveli front cover

On this date in 1996, Tupac Amaru Shakur posthumously released the final album of his illustrious career.

26 years ago today, just two months after the untimely murder of Tupac on the Las Vegas strip alongside Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight, the fifth and final album, Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, was released. Recognized as ‘Pac’s most influential body of work, the Killuminati album was not only his most controversial, but its concept still has many of his fans believing that ‘Pac is still alive. Besides his beef with Nas, Jay-Z, B.I.G., and almost any relevant New York rapper you can think of, the album hinges on the life of Makaveli, a play on the name of Italian writer and philosopher Nicollo Machiavelli, who is believed to have staged his own death.

The album was originally set to be dropped in March of 1997, but after Shakur was killed, Death Row boss Suge Knight released the album four months later. Ironically, Brooklyn rap rival Notorious B.I.G. was shot down in Los Angeles, California on March 9, 1997.

The album, recorded in 12 days in August 1996, hosted a list of timeless, classic singles including “Hail Mary”, “Me And My Girlfriend” and “Against All Odds”; all of which were remade by premiere artists after Shakur’s death. The 5X platinum album has been listed as one of the top-selling Hip Hop albums of all time.

DMX’s Posthumous Album “Let Us Pray: Chapter X” Gets A Release Date

The hip-hop world still misses DMX dearly, and while posthumous projects are always understandable causes for concern with fans, this time feels a little different. His estate recently announced his posthumous album Let Us Pray: Chapter X, which will consist of four tracks and its four respective instrumental versions. Instead of rapping, this will feature the New York native’s famous prayers and represent his spiritual side, accompanied by instrumentation from songwriter and producer Warryn Campbell. Let Us Pray drops on December 13. The album’s first single, “Favor” with Killer Mike as well as Mary Mary and RoyzNoyz Orchestra, is already available on streaming services.

Other guests on the album include Lecrae, MC Lyte, Snoop Dogg, Terrace Martin, and Lena Byrd-Miles. “Working on Let Us Pray: Chapter X has been one of the most fulfilling experiences for me as a creative,” Campbell expressed concerning the posthumous spoken-word album. “When you hear the voice of DMX, it inspires instant creativity and what better way to showcase who X really was than through prayer. I believe I can speak for MC Lyte, Killer Mike, Snoop Dogg, LeCrae, Mary Mary, Lena Byrd Miles, and Terrace Martin when I say it was an honor and privilege to be part of this amazing work.”

DMX’s Posthumous Let Us Pray: Chapter X Drops In December

Elsewhere, other media projects looking to preserve the legacy of DMX (real name Earl Simmons) brought up some apparent conflicts when it comes to his loved ones. His ex wife Tashera Simmons recently denied that she’s working with Irv Gotti on a biopic of X that he teased. “In light of recent speculation, we want to clarify that we are not currently working with Irv Gotti, nor have we agreed to partner with him on any content related to Earl Simmons, including a biopic,” she stated via Instagram.

This follows other moves from DMX’s estate to partner with Artist Legacy Group to “ensure that his message and music live on” through “innovative projects.” At press time, it’s unclear if Let Us Pray: Chapter X is a part of this partnership or if there are other honors on the way. Nevertheless, this new album might just be a very cathartic moment.

DMX’s Estate Begins Rollout For Posthumous LP With “Favor” Featuring Killer Mike & More

Even though DMX has been gone for three years, it feels more like an eternity. He left behind one of the most successful hip-hop legacies in recent memory. The respect for him amongst his living peers is more than enough to make anyone realize just how special he was. His trademark growly delivery led to so many major hits, and they led to a massive collection of accolades. Since 2021, his estate has been trying to carry on his impact by okaying singles, collaborations, and even an album. 2024 has seen a small handful of joint efforts already, but DMX’s team is now pulling from his solo catalog this time around with “Favor” getting a wide release today.

According to a press release, this is the lead single from the Mount Vernon, New York native’s second posthumous album. It will be titled Let Us Pray: Chapter X and it will be out everywhere on December 13. It will contain eight songs (four are instrumentals) which are actually all spoken word cuts. More specifically, it’s a small collection of prayers that DMX recorded, and they are all backed by original music from producer and multi-genre songwriter, Warryn Campbell. He’s had a huge hand in some of Kanye West’s biggest songs and projects. His list of contributions includes work on Graduation, Donda, Late Registration, and JESUS IS KING.
