BHM| Today In Hip Hop History: Larry Davis Killed in Shawangunk Prison 16 Years Ago

larrydavis

Some say he was 50 Cent before 50 Cent. Some called him “the Robin Hood of The Ghetto,” while the establishment dubbed him “the crack city terminator.” In the hood, his solution is considered the only possible answer to an ongoing epidemic of police brutality. Some of your favorite rappers, from French Montana to Lloyd Banks to Jay-Z, have name-dropped him on their tracks. BET felt he was so important to American culture that their American Gangster series had to open with him. Still, only an educated few know why the name Larry Davis continues to ring bells more than three decades after that fateful night in November of ’86.

On February 20, 2008, Adam Abdul Hakeem, aka Larry Davis, was stabbed to death in Shawangunk State Prison in New York by a fellow inmate after serving 23 years for an illegal weapons charge. Most would say that people die in American prisons daily, so what’s the big deal about another dead prisoner? Well, it must first be explained why Mr. Davis was in jail for so long on a mere gun charge in the first place.

As he said on camera after his capture in 1986, “the police gave me the guns!”, that Davis was finally charged after being acquitted of shooting 6 NYPD officers. The then-21-year-old BX native’s defense was that he hit the officers in self-defense. Davis exposed that he sold drugs for these Bronx precinct officers, claiming that they wanted to kill him because of what he knew about the department’s drug operation, and a Bronx jury believed him. This case was the first and possibly the only time in American history that a civilian was cleared of all charges in the shooting of a police officer.

The NYPD and then-Mayor Edward Koch were outraged at the outcome. After Larry’s death, former Mayor Koch said, “The prison system did what the criminal justice system could not.” It’s safe to say that with the endless accusations against the NYPD and other police departments around the country for brutality against Black and brown people, the sentiment of sympathy for Larry Davis has been met with fierce opposition.

With the recent killings of Black youth by police and civilians becoming the norm, the question in the urban community is whether or not Larry Davis’ solution to police brutality is the only option left. With normal citizens being allowed to shoot first and ask questions later regarding Black youth and the prison industrial complex as the penalty for defending yourself, the bare truth is that it has become the only option for some. We’ve heard Larry’s name come from the mouths of everyone from ATCQ to Jay-Z. With landmark cases from Emmitt Till to Botham Jean, history reveals that people such as Nat Turner, Denmark Vesey, and even Larry Davis will always be heroes.

Check out Larry’s story on Troy Reed’s Street Stories Larry Davis: A Routine Typical Hit, BET’s American Gangster series and is also rumored to be in the hands of several filmmakers, which could spawn the story on the silver screen.

Le’Keian Woods’ Family Demands Justice Following Violent Police Confrontation

Recently, there’s been a clip of 24-year-old Le’Keian Woods going viral, showing his violent encounter with Jacksonville police. In the video, Woods can be seen getting held on the ground by various officers. Though it’s hard to tell how he sustained them, severe injuries can also be seen on Woods’ face. Now, Woods’ cousin has shared the video in hopes of getting justice for the alleged police brutality.

“Attention followers‼” she wrote. “My cousin was brutally attacked by THE GANG MEMBERS THAT ARE IN CHARGE OF ‘PROTECTING OUR CITY’ @jaxsheriff He is currently hospitalized and JSO isn’t allowing him to speak to any family because they know they have committed an act of brutality! I can’t think of any situation that would warrant an OFFICER to kick someone in the face while they are CUFFED on the ground! PLEASE SHARE, REPOST, AND TAG ANY OUTLET YOU THINK COULD HELP!”

Le’Keian Woods Hospitalized After Traffic Stop

Woods’ family claims that he, his uncle, and a friend were pulled over for not wearing seatbelts, but it’s unclear how the situation escalated from there. After his injuries were sustained, he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. He was then brought to Duval County Jail. He’s currently being held there for various charges, including resisting an officer. He’s also charged with armed drug trafficking, possession of a controlled substance, and more.

The Jacksonville Police Department has since shared a statement on the situation with First Coast News. “Yesterday, JSO officers were involved in an incident near Toledo Road and Powers Avenue in which force was used taking a subject into custody. The agency takes all allegations of inappropriate use of force by JSO officers seriously. As such, this incident is now under administrative review to determine if the involved officers violated any JSO policy. Because the matter is currently under investigation, the agency cannot comment further about the incident until the investigation is completed.”

Cop Who Killed Breonna Taylor Finds New Law Enforcement Job

In March 2020, 26-year-old Breonna Taylor was shot and killed in her Louisville home by members of the Louisville Police Department. The officers had been conducting a no-knock warrant obtained to investigate reported links to a local drug dealing operation. Later investigations would find layers of protocol breaches, corruption, and no reason to actually investigate Taylor’s residence. Taylor’s residence was also never searched.

After police breached the apartment, they were fired upon by Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker. Walker testified that the police did not announce themselves and he believed that they were instead intruders. Officers responded by firing 32 rounds into the apartment, hitting Taylor six times. After finding multiple breaches of police protocol in subsequent investigations, the LMPD fired Myles Cosgrove. Cosgrove was the officer deemed to have fired the shot that killed Taylor. Taylor’s death was just one of many that sparked a wave of anti-police protests in 2020.

Cosgrove’s Hiring Defended By New Employer

According to multiple sources, Myles Cosgrove has now found a new position in law enforcement. He will now serve as a member of the Carroll County Sherriff’s Department. Carroll County sits about 51 miles northeast of Louisville. Furthermore, the Sherriff’s Department has defended the hiring. Sherriff Ryan Gosser argued that Cosgrove had faced no legal consequences regarding Taylor’s death. Furthermore, Gosser defended Cosgrove’s experience and stated it would be a benefit to the department. “We’re going to give him a chance,” Gosser said. Cosgrove had appealed his firing numerous times but had never been reinstated. Most recently, his appeal was rejected and his firing upheld was in February.

However, this is the latest in a long history of cops being rehired. A 2022 Reuters report found that police officers rarely faced punishment for misconduct. Additionally, those who are punished are overwhelmingly rehired. In December 2022, a police officer fired from the San Antonio PD for giving a homeless man a feces sandwich was hired in a town 30 miles away. Furthermore, the officer who killed 12-year-old Tamir Rice in 2014 has been rehired twice in recent years. Public outcry about Cosgrove’s hiring has been swift and fierce. However, his new employer appears intent on retaining him for now.

Tyre Nichols: Stepfather Denies Rumor Of Affair With Officer’s Wife

Social media can be helpful when sharing information beneficial to the masses, but Tyre Nichols fell victim to unsubstantiated rumors. We’ve continued to report on the death of the 29-year-old who was beaten by police. Nichols was headed to his mother’s home when he was pulled over by officers, yanked out of his car, and tortured. Videos from the City of Memphis show him being tased, punched, kicked in the head, and bludgeoned with a baton. Emergency responders didn’t tend to his injuries for 20 minutes. Three days later, Nichols died in a hospital.

There has been a public outcry for justice, and five officers have been fired. Three employees of the Memphis Fire Department have also been let go, while two other officers have reportedly been suspended. Yesterday (February 1), Nichols’s funeral was live-streamed for the world, but amid the mourning were rumors about why the young father was targeted.

In such situations, people often try to reconcile what occurred by figuring out the answer to “why.” A rumor circulated about Tyre’s alleged involvement with one of his attackers’ wives, and his stepfather, Rodney Wells, stepped forward to call it all lies. He addressed the gossip during a press conference.

“Don’t anybody believe that mess,” said Wells. “They tryin’ to get out of this, but they’re not… Police tried to cover it up. It’s still trying to spread rumors about my son that are not true. For anybody that thought that these rumors are true, they are not. And to stand up here every day and try to put on this face and all that, it’s difficult. But we have to do it. I have. a wife, I have stepchildren that need my support.”

Attorney Ben Crump represents the Nichols family, but former NBA Stephen Jackson said his involvement with the case was political.

Tyre Nichols: 6th Memphis Officer Suspended, 2 EMTs Fired

A traffic stop has turned into national outrage after videos of Tyre Nichols being beaten by Memphis officers have been released. The 29-year-old father was pulled over earlier this month before he was savagely thrashed on the road. It took weeks for the Memphis Police Department to release the footage. The director of the FBI even issued a statement saying he was stunned by the visuals.

Five Black officers—Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith—were fired from the department on January 20. It was quickly shared that they also faced several charges, including second-degree murder.

However, after the video of the incident with Nichols was released, many noticed there was also a white cop on the scene. Additionally, when EMTs arrived following the attack, Nichols went untreated for approximately 20 minutes. Three days later, he succumbed to his injuries.

Activist Shaun King called for others involved to be held accountable. This included Preston Hemphill, the Memphis officer who allegedly repeatedly tased Nichols. Following the uproar, the police department shared that Hemphill had been suspended.

Further, the Memphis Fire Department has done a bit of investigating of its own. In a statement, they detailed what they learned, and this included two EMTs who did not adequately treat Nichols at the scene. They were reportedly responding to a call about a person who was pepper sprayed but failed to conduct a proper patient assessment.

The EMTs have been named as Robert Long and JaMichael Sandridge. Lieutenant Michelle Whitaker was also said to have been fired, as well. None of the newly named officials have been arrested or charged at this time. It is unclear if they will face charges in the future.

“The five officers terminated were directly involved at the first and second scene where Mr. Nichols was physically abused and suffered serious injuries,” a press release stated. “Officer Preston Hemphill and other officers’ actions and inactions have been and continue to be the subject of this investigation since its inception on January 8, 2023.”

“Numerous charges still developing (are) impending.”

It has also been reported that a seventh officer has also been suspended. At this time, they have not been named.

After waiting weeks to see the surveillance and bodycam footage of the Tyre Nichols beating, the Memphis Police Department has revealed what occurred that fateful evening. On January 7, FedEx worker Tyre Nichols was pulled over for a traffic stop, allegedly accused of reckless driving. The department asserted Nichols fled from the scene and resisted arrest, resulting in officers using force.
