Takeoff, a member of the Atlanta rap trio Migos, was killed outside a Houston bowling alley at 28 years old. Despite the Migos being one of the most famous rap groups of the last decade, many questions have risen about the group since Takeoff’s passing. One of these is regarding the Migos’ familial relationship. As their rap name is a take on the “three amigos,” many believed that the three members, Quavo, Takeoff, and Offset, were brothers. However, that is not the case. Let’s find out if Takeoff is actually Quavo’s nephew.
Quavo & Takeoff’s Relationship
Takeoff is in fact Quavo’s nephew despite the two being only three years apart. Takeoff’s mother is Quavo’s older sister, and Offset is Takeoff’s cousin. Quavo’s mother, Edna Marshall, raised all three members in Gwinnett County in the northern suburbs of Atlanta. So, despite their actual blood relations, the three see each other as brothers. This led to their name, the Migos, and all three members refer to each other as brothers.
The Migos first started making music together in 2009 under the name “Polo Club.” The trio was inspired by other Southern rap groups such as Outkast and the Hot Boys. Quavo was a star quarterback for his high school football team but dropped out to pursue music. The three officially changed their name to Migos in 2010 and gained regional success in 2012 with their song “Bando.” The song caught the attention of producer Zaytoven and manager Coach K, who helped launch the careers of Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy.
The Migos blew up in 2013 with their almost overnight hit “Versace.” The song caught the attention of Drake, and the Canadian rapper remixed the song with a verse of his own. From there, as is said, the rest is history. Migos have since dropped seven albums, including the Culture trilogy, and the three are now seen as possibly the most influential rap group of this generation.
Quavo’s Response To Takeoff’s Passing
Takeoff’s memorial, a large celebration of life, was held on November 11, 2022, at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena. Both Quavo and Offset spoke at the memorial, and Quavo shared his speech on Instagram. In Quavo’s post he wrote, “Dear Take, It’s so hard to tell you Ima miss you because you always with me and we did everything together. Since we were kids you been by my side lookin up at me, them eyes waiting on me to make the next move…then you followed up right behind me. You always made sure I did it first so you can do it right with me. You never competed with me, we were always on same team.” Quavo also shared many childhood pictures of Takeoff and mentioned their dream was to be tag team partners in the WWE.
Quavo also wrote, “Quietest in the room but paid attention to everything going on in the room. Always been like that!!! Nothing ever really bothered Take and he didn’t bother anybody. He the most unbothered person in the world.” In addition to this, Quavo wrote that Takeoff’s dream was always to become a rapper. “He never worried about titles, credit, or what man got the most shine, that wasn’t him. He didn’t care about none of that as along we brought it back home to the family!”
Quavo’s Comments On His & Takeoff’s Relationship
In Quavo’s speech at Takeoff’s memorial, he also gave insight into the two’s relationship and how they saw each other. Quavo wrote, “This whole time I’ve been trying to figure what you really are to me because nephew wasn’t it. We hated that word ‘nephew’ or when they said ‘Unc and Phew’ cuz we always knew we were way closer than that and it made me feel old too. But I knew you weren’t my brother cuz you are my sister’s son, so I couldn’t say brother.” He added, “Now I finally get it….you are OUR angel watching me and watching us this whole time in living form making sure EVERYONE FELT UR LOVE AND HUGS while u here and u made our dreams come true. Whenever u spoke it, it manifested it when u said ‘God gonna do it,’ he did it.”
Quavo ended his tribute to Takeoff with, “I love you with all my heart. I’ll never leave you…I guess God jus ain’t need my help. So can you ask Him for me what I gotta do to be with you again!!! In a place where there’s no pain, no demons, no jealousy, no envy, no greed. Whatever we have to do God to be at that place of paradise send us the tools now cuz we want be with Take. Love you nephew!”

Curren$y has been a mainstay in the Southern rap scene for over a decade. Covering the moody landscape of Southern rap, he’s known for his clockwork output and swaggering verses. The New Orleans-born artist has been collaborating with underground artists throughout his career. Some of his most notable collaborations have been with The Alchemist, Freddie Gibbs, and Wiz Khalifa. He remains a household name in the Southern rap scene with a fifteen-year career.
As for The Alchemist, the two released Continuance back in 2022, their third studio release as a duo. Polishing their past sound, many held that Continuance was one of the better rap projects in 2022. With ForMotivational Use Only, Vol. 1, Curren$y is wisely sticking with iconic producer collaborations. This time, it’s with music legend Jermaine Dupri. The So So Def icon has produced hit records for artists such as Mariah Carey, Usher, Ludacris, Jay-Z, and LL Cool J.
Curren$y’s collaboration with Dupri has been years in the making. About teaming up with him, he said, “I had my mind made up even since the ‘Jump’ remix by Kris Kross and SuperCat that I wanted to work with him. I’d crossed paths with the legend from making moves with Lil Wayne, but it was clearly not my place to introduce myself. I had to play my part. The universe is the universe though, and it makes things right when it’s the right time.” In retrospect, it’s good to see the dedicated MC get his mainstream shine.
The EP Blends Southern R&B & Trap Styles
At its core, For Motivational Use Only, Vol. 1 is an ode to Southern rap. In an interview with Rap Radar, Dupri stated, “Part 1 is a real southern record that the south really needs.” The producer and Curren$y team up for 22 minutes of braggadocios verses and colossal beats. A true summer-time jam, the booming 808s are perfect for a warm weather drive. While much of For Motivational Use Only, Vol. 1 shoots for a trap-heavy sound on the likes of “Off the Lot,” you also have your cuts such as “Fortune 500,” which edge towards more of a lo-fi quality. Dupri showcases his ability to produce in various soundscapes, solidifying why he remains one of the most in-demand producers in hip-hop.
Curren$y spends much of the project flexing his wealth. Driving around in a fresh Cadillac, he doesn’t shy away from hyping himself up with bars such as “My diamonds are brighter than yours” or “The quarterly projections lookin’ like a straight blessing” on “Never Enough.” However, he isn’t surface-level in his description of wealth. As he puts it, it took years of hard work and suffering. He references his impoverished circumstances and his mother’s tireless work ethic throughout the record, stating, “Mama worked like a slave, that’s I work so damn hard when it come to getting paid” on “Never Enough.” His pen game is laid back yet hyper-focused from start to finish. For Motivational Use Only, Vol. 1 is a celebratory ode to where he’s currently at in life.
Curren$y Recruits Heavy Hitters
Additionally, For Motivational Use Only, Vol. 1 features fellow Southern MC counterparts 2 Chainz and T.I. They pop up on “Never Fall Off” and “Off the Lot,” two of the better cuts off of the EP. Surprisingly, it’s the first time T.I. has appeared on one of Dupri’s beats. Curren$y is one of those MCs that warrants more respect in hip-hop circles than he does in the mainstream. It explains why he’s consistently able to garner big-name features on his projects. Founding Jet Life Recordings back in 2011, he also references his wide portfolio throughout the EP.
As implied by the record title, there’s more to come from the Southern duo. In a quote from Curren$y’s Instagram, he stated, “We have a zillion songs recorded at this point, but we have selected 7 to form an EP and drop at midnight.” A successful first installment in the duo’s series, it will be exciting to see how they build on the sound of For Motivational Use Only, Vol.1 for future records. The duo hinted at a heavier feature list featuring the likes of Nas for the next volume.
In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising if Volume 2 of this series grows on the grandeur soundscapes of the first volume. More time spent in the studio between the two Southern counterparts should enable them to continue to pick at the margins of their respective potentials. With Curren$y existing in the pocket of psychedelic jazz beats over the past few years, For Motivational Use Only, Vol. 1 signifies a bold departure from his usual comfort zone.
Young Thug has been among the most consistent and popular artists over the past decade. Fans and artists alike have expressed their love and admiration for Thug in light of his incarceration, and he is now widely recognized as one of the most influential artists of this generation. However, Thug’s appearance in a dress on the cover of his 2016 project Jeffery, previously titled No, My Name is Jeffrey, left many fans polarized at the time. With hindsight, the cover has become iconic as it depicted the eccentricity of Thug that has made him so popular. Let’s look at the story behind Thug’s dress on No, My Name is Jeffrey.
How The Cover Came Together
Jeffrey‘s cover features Young Thug in a periwinkle dress that covers the rapper’s entire body. Before this, Thug made many androgynous fashion choices, such as wearing Uggs, skinny jeans, skin-tight shirts, and colorful diamonds. However, Thug upped his personal style for the cover, and the photographer of the shoot, Garfield Larmond, stated that Thug immediately knew he wanted to wear the dress after seeing it for the first time.
Thug first saw the dress in a meeting with VFILESfounder Julie Anne-Quay during his role on the VFILES mentorship panel. Larmond recounts this event in an interview with FADER, stating, “So, we were just looking through the photos at the end of the shoot, and [Thug] said, ‘What’s that? I need it.’ He saw the piece in New York, and said immediately, ‘I want that for the cover.’ Like, there was no thought about it. He just saw it and knew he wanted it.” After seeing a picture of the dress, Thug shipped it from the designer Alessandro Trincone’s home in Italy to Atlanta, Georgia, for the album shoot.
After receiving the dress, Larmond stated that it took Thug an hour just to get the dress on. At a listening event for No, My Name is Jeffrey, Larmond stated, “When we got on set, it definitely took like, an hour and a half to put it on. Then once he put it on and I started shooting, they noticed a piece was off — like something really intricate. So we had to take another thirty minutes to pin stuff up, get the hat right. It took hours. Hours on top of hours.”
Alessandro Trincone & The Dress’ Design
Alessandro Trincone designed the dress as a participant in VFILES crowd-sourced season 7. Trincone won the VFILES runway contest in 2016, the same event in which Young Thug first saw the dress. The dress came from Trincone’s ” Annodami ” collection and drew inspiration from Japanese-style kimonos and trousers. Coincidentally, Trincone designed the dress with many of the same ideals of Thug regarding gender identity. Trincone wrote, “The androgynous identity of my inspirational garments reinforces my belief of no-gender boundaries between men and women.”
Trincone stated that he knew of Young Thug before the album cover but believed Thug was “too fashion” for the two to cross paths. However, Trincone was ecstatic with the album cover and felt it reinforced many of his beliefs when designing the dress. In a statement with VFILES, Trincone said, “When I saw the cover image here in Italy, it was like, around 2:30 a.m., and I was completely shocked. I couldn’t sleep for the feelings that I felt—so excited, so happy, and so proud of it all. I’m so happy to collaborate with Young Thug.” Trincone also stated that the album cover “exactly centered my point, which is that everyone can wear whatever they want to. Everyone can be themselves. Ignore what people are saying and thinking.”
The Importance of Thug’s Dress
Many fans and artists doubted Thug’s decision to sport a dress on Jeffrey‘s cover. Fellow Atlanta rapper T.I. publicly stated that he felt the dress was a publicity stunt, and Thug only did it for attention. Many fans reflected this sentiment at the time online, and the cover became both controversial and confusing for many. Despite this, Jeffrey’s cover has since become iconic, and many people have cited its importance in addressing hyper-masculinity and gender norms.
While many Black artists in the past, such as Prince and the Isley Brothers, often dressed in a more androgynous fashion, a homogeneous image of Black masculinity has since formed over the past few decades as Hip-Hop became a dominant force in popular culture. With the dress, Young Thug showed the ability to push back on ideals of masculinity within the culture. Thug’s dress showed many others that they could define what it means to be a man on their terms, which is an incredibly powerful statement.
RapCaviar Presents is a new docuseries on Hulu. It extends from the Spotify playlist, RapCaviar, which also has a podcast series hosted by music journalist Jinx. Across the six episodes, various rappers are covered, and their careers are discussed. These artists are chosen based on the central theme of each episode. This ranges from the hyper-masculinity in rap being erased to the continuous rise of women in the genre. The first episode is “Breaking The Mold – Tyler, The Creator.” It features interviews with Tyler’s famous friends Pharrell Williams, Vince Staples, radio host Big Boy, and one of Tyler’s managers, Christian Clancy.
Tyler’s Origins Made Him Unique, But He Wanted To do More
This episode of Hulu’s RapCaviar Presents frames its focus around Tyler’s individuality as an artist. The episode serves as a timeline of his career with the footage it uses. In the opening portions are multiple videos from his time with his collective Odd Future. Longtime supporters will recognize these clips, including popular moments from the infamous “A Day in Ladera” video and other iconic group pictures and footage. And yes, footage from the “Oldie” music video is in it, too. Interviewees spoke about how the group’s style was one thing that set them apart from the rest of the rap world immediately. The footage ends with videos from Tyler’s most recent tour promoting his Call Me If You Get Lost album. Fans will find joy in just seeing how the size of the crowds increased more and more as Tyler’s career progressed.
Tyler’s manager Christian Clancy said he always trusted Tyler’s vision. This goes back to the notoriously controversial video for “Yonkers.” This was released in 2011, long before the RapCaviar playlist was a thing. Tyler was always confident in what he wanted to make. He trusted his ideas and those around him did, too. Those people embraced what he was doing because it was different. However, that’s what was pushing other sources away. Tyler’s music was not getting the coverage he wanted. He later realized people knew him for his antics more than his music career. This caused a shift in his creative output. Rather than just doing shocking things for fun, he changed to making things that showed his talent.
Tyler’s Grammy Loss Pushed Him To A Different Level
Tyler was nominated for Best Rap Album for Flower Boy in 2018 but lost. The episode focuses on how Tyler did not care what others thought of his music and expression. Yet, he still wanted validation from something on a grand scale. He knew he deserved it. This loss pushed him even more, and his following album IGOR won the Grammy for Best Rap Album in 2020. This win was ironic because the album is even less traditional in terms of “rap” than Flower Boy. Hulu’s RapCaviar Presents inserted footage of Tyler’s face on that night, showing his genuine shock at the win.
Tyler won the Grammy for Best Rap Album again in 2022 for Call Me If You Get Lost. The episode ends around this point with footage of fans speaking about how he impacted their lives. This is fitting because the RapCaviar Presents episode has been about how he has inspired people to embrace their uniqueness. By showcasing his own, he directly inspired them. Many viewers may find this inspiring because they remember when Tyler had the same effect on them years ago. It shows that no matter when someone gets into his music, the same result can come from it. Christian Clancy’s closing quote from the Hulu series is perhaps the best way to frame the entirety of Tyler’s effect on the music world: “If you don’t allow for change, you stay stuck.”
Tyler’s Episode Is For Two Audiences
This debut episode of RapCaviar Presents serves as a decent overview of Tyler’s career. However, longtime supporters may not learn anything new from it. At less than an hour, there is only a limited amount of time to get all the information in. Additionally, the documentary jumps from multiple eras quickly to allow time to include them, with some getting much more time than others. The focus is primarily on how people perceived the music—not how Tyler made it. The documentary echoes something many listeners already know about Tyler: he will do what he wants no matter what. For those unfamiliar with him, this will serve as a good introduction. For those already familiar, this will serve as more of a trip down memory lane and a chance to reflect on Tyler’s growth as an artist.
RapCaviar Presents is available to stream on Hulu now.
Business guru Kim Kardashian and former Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson had a whirlwind nine-month relationship. Between their not-so-secret rendezvouses in Staten Island to longer, more private tropical getaways, many fans were rooting for the adorable couple. Unfortunately, in August 2022, the pair announced an amicable split. The pressure of hectic work schedules and the long distance between them could not sustain the relationship. Here’s a detailed timeline of their relationship.
Pete & Kim: How It Started
Kim and then-husband Kanye West attended Kid Cudi’s birthday party in January 2019. That is where Pete and Kim officially meet, but their relationship did not ignite until she hosted Saturday Night Live. Kim hosted the show in October 2022, dishing some all-in-fun jabs at her family. Meanwhile, Kim and Pete performed a skit together as Disney characters Jasmine and Aladdin. The two shared a steamy kiss during that skit, and the relationship blossomed. Later in October, the two visited Knott’s Berry Farm. Even though they claimed to be friends, they were spotted tightly holding hands on a rollercoaster.
The Romance Grows For Pete & Kim
Throughout November, Kim made several trips to New York City, including sharing an intimate rooftop date at Staten Island’s Campania with Pete. Later in the month, the pair were pictured holding hands in Palm Springs and appeared on Insta together. They were celebrating Pete’s birthday weekend. Their romance was reaching new heights, and the world watched on.
Together During The Holidays
During December, back on Staten Island, the couple hit the town with Scott Disick, the father of Kim’s sister Kourtney’s children. They saw Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and had dinner at Angelina’s. During the holidays, Kim and Pete were spotted having breakfast together. Later, Pete was seen driving Kim’s Rolls-Royce while shopping.
Kim & Pete Celebrate The New Year
January featured a fabulous vacation for the power couple. They celebrated a delayed New Year’s celebration in the Bahamas. Kim posted gorgeous pictures of herself in a bikini from the vacation. Most fans were positive they could spot Pete’s shadow in one of the pictures.
Pete Drops The “G” Word
By February, the cat was mostly out of the bag for the couple. In an interview with PEOPLE’s talk show, Pete dropped the G word. He admitted that Kim was his girlfriend and that he had a candle with her face on it. Later in March, the two make it Instagram official. Kim announced their relationship via social media posts.
Embracing The Relationship
April was a whirlwind for Kim and Pete. They attend The Kardashians premiere; however, Pete stays towards the side, letting his lady soak up the spotlight. On the 11th, Kim posted new pictures of her and Pete eating pizza and snuggling up close in a restaurant booth, which set off a firestorm of memes. During an interview with Not Skinny but Not Fat the following day, Kim dished about her SNL kiss with Pete. She admitted that she asked a producer for his number.
On the 28th, Davidson played the dutiful boyfriend by joining Kim at the courthouse to support her during the Kardashians’ ongoing legal battle with Blac Chyna. The two were seen embracing after the closing arguments. On April 30, the two hit the red carpet in style when Kim and Pete attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Pete and Kim Shine At Met Gala
The happy couple attended the Met Gala together at the beginning of May. Kim sported the iconic Marilyn Monroe gown. Then, Kim visited Italy to celebrate her sister Kourtney and Travis Barker’s wedding. Even though Pete could not join, Kim kept him close. She sports a pink manicure featuring a “P” made up of rhinestones on her ring finger. By the end of May, Kim and Pete are on Instagram kissing and cuddling with matching blonde hair.
Another Romantic Trip
In June, during an episode of The Kardashians, Kim talked about how her relationship with Pete began. On the 13th, Kim posted several pics of her and Pete on a romantic vacation. In another episode of The Kardashians in June, Pete is heard off-camera during a post-credit talking about a very intimate part of Kim. Later in June, the happy couple took a trip to Tahiti.
Pete Shows Off Kim Tattoos
Kim posts many pictures of her and Pete at the beginning of July. In one photo, Pete appears to have a Kim-inspired tattoo. It is an infinity sign with the names “Jasmine” and “Aladdin.” This new ink is in addition to his tattoos: “knscp” and “my girl is a lawyer” across his collarbone. Later in July, the couple took a private trip to Australia.
The End For Pete & Kim
However, sadly by August, it seemed the fire had gone out of the steamy relationship. Reports surfaced that Kim and Pete called it quits after nine months. They blamed the break up on busy schedules and long distances, making it hard to maintain the relationship.
Only two years ago, the world was forced to mourn the loss of one of arguably New York’s most popular, prolific, troubled hip-hop artists—Earl Simmons, aka DMX. On April 2, 2021, DMX was rushed to White Plains Hospital in an emergency that left the rapper unresponsive. He remained for seven days, though in a vegetative state, until he passed away on April 9. Upon investigation, his cause of death was revealed to be a massive heart attack brought on by a cocaine overdose that halted the flow of oxygen to his brain.
While his life was cut tragically short at 50, the legacy of music that he left behind will last lifetimes. He was a legend’s legend—a harbinger of the New York hip-hop scene in the late ’90s. Drill Rap owes more to DMX than he ever gets credit for—but that’s another story. On top of his lyrical prowess, DMX’s unique delivery and cadence were often imitated (I’m looking at you, Ja) but never duplicated. He was methodical when it came to the music he created.
Coming up on the anniversary of his passing, I’m running back through his entire catalog. The albums I had on repeat, the ones I blatantly skipped, and everything in between—ranking them from top to bottom. Since he has studio albums, mixtapes, soundtracks, and compilations, I will only look at studio albums.
8. Undisputed (2012)
This was the first album of X’s I purposely didn’t listen to when it came out. It was his first album after dissolving the relationship with Ruff Ryders. I assumed the album would suffer from it, not because of X’s talent, but because it wouldn’t feel the same. After listening to the album a few times, I feel vindicated. The split from the label and the impact it had was fairly obvious.
It’s a decent album. However, the production and features lack the signature grit and aggression you came to expect from him. It had more tracks I skipped than I listened to, and the streams online seem to back up my sentiments as one of his least-played albums.
7. Year of the Dog…Again (2006)
If Undisputed didn’t feel the same because it was the first album after his split from Ruff Ryders, Year of the Dog… Again didn’t because he was still with the Ruff Ryders. Never one to shy away from making his feelings known, X openly discussed his problems with the label. Unhappy about money, the energy came across in the music, just not in the best way. It was the first album in almost a decade of his career that didn’t land at a No. 1 spot on the charts. The album features the signature production of Swizz Beatz and one of the head hitmakers of the time, Scott Storch. It had features from Jadakiss, Styles P, and Busta Rhymes. However, it didn’t evolve as you would have thought after a decade of making music . Hip-hop was changing, and this album felt like X struggled to keep up.
6. Grand Champ (2003)
Grand Champ was the last album DMX had that went certified platinum. However, it seemed to be a struggle for it to do so. It might not have done as well were it not for the lead single, “Where the Hood At,” which felt like a nostalgic grab at the success of the blunt, staggered delivery of his breakthrough hit “Ruff Ryders Anthem.” Originally this album would have had an additional smash hit, “X Gon’ Give it to Ya.” Yet, while X was filming Cradle to the Grave, the director heard the song and claimed it for the hit soundtrack.
This album, to me, always felt like a sequel. That means it tried, but not that hard because it didn’t have to. Maybe it was the bravado of always landing at No. 1, or maybe the label forced him into a role they typecast him in. Either way, this album tried to include singles-ready tracks and only ended up with one.
5. The Great Depression (2001)
His fourth album in less than three years, The Great Depression, followed the albums that came before it. The album landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Music charts, and it was backed up by two strong singles that kept it anchored in the charts. The production from Just Blaze, Dame Grease, and DMX felt like the last time we heard the rapper represented on an album. It felt like the sound and energy we’d grown accustomed to, but it wasn’t as forced as later albums would be. It was a solid mid-grade album and was the last I remember buying from X.
4. Exodus (2021)
Exodus was released posthumously about a month and a half after DMX passed. In the wake of his death, Exodus fell under the radar in terms of what it could have been stream-wise. However, I think this is one of his best albums when it comes to the way you could feel the evolution of X. He went from this young 20-something that came out ready for war to the OG who attempted to reflect and find faith in something other than the version of himself that had the most success.
This album was introspective and cut a lot deeper than his others in terms of the struggles he had gone through. I’m unclear if any of that sentiment is influenced by the fact that he died before it was released. It could be a bit of a bias, a ‘don’t know what you got til it’s gone’ type vibe. However, I think it was because this album was far superior to some of his chart-topping projects. It brought us features from The Lox, which felt even more critical considering DMX’s death. Further, New York heavy hitters Nas and Jay-Z, among others, also make appearances. In fact, “Bath Salts” earned X his first Grammy nomination in 20 years.
3. …And Then There Was X (1999)
This was the best-selling album in X’s decades-long career and spent the most time on the charts, peaking at No. 1 right out of the gate. …And Then There Was X was an album that still featured a fresh, new-to-the-fame version of X. The version of him that somehow still held on to his hunger, despite album sales reaching into the millions. It was the X that still carried the hopes of the boroughs on his back while seamlessly combining more radio-friendly hits into the rotation without it feeling forced.
“What These Bitches Want” featuring Sisqo and “What’s My Name” were both instant hits. However, the single that came sandwiched between those two, “Party Up (Up in Here),” earned him his highest charting single. Other than Sisqo and a few choice features, the album was predominantly DMX showing off his ability to make massive hits appear out of songs that wouldn’t seem to make sense for the radio. It’s still one of his most popular albums of all time.
2. Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood (1998)
In what has to be considered one of the most iconic hip-hop album covers ever, DMX dropped Flesh of my Flesh, Blood of my Blood in 1998. Appearing shirtless on a stark white background, X is featured front and center, dripping blood down his torso and offering his hands to you as if he can’t give you any more. Released less than a year after his studio debut, It’s Dark and Hell is Hot—an unheard-of act in the days before Soundcloud rappers—the album debuted at No. 1 and featured an eclectic list of heavy-hitting features ranging from Mary J. Blige to Marilyn Manson.
This album is dark. The kind of dark you didn’t see a lot of mainstream (or at least mainstream successful) rappers touch on. I mentioned earlier that drill music probably owes a lot more to DMX than he gets credit for. Yet, the Horrorcore hip-hop genre owes this man some flowers, too. He spoke of demons in his head on a tangible level, along with murders, depression, and the struggles he inevitably succumbed to. This was peak DMX and still maintains a place on my listening station. This is weird because this one barely had singles when it came to plays. It wasn’t a radio hit, but none of that mattered. The magic of X translated without it.
1. It’s Dark And Hell Is Hot (1998)
I can’t say enough about how good this album is. It was everything the ’90s didn’t know they needed until DMX released it in 1998. It was violent and hard AF. The album featured the signature growl that continued to back the listener into a proverbial corner from fear every time the adlib dropped. This was an opus. An actual story being told in the form of a hip-hop album, it felt like it was filled with metaphors and allegories hidden under veiled truths.
The truth was that this was the album that took over hip-hop. It allowed listeners to funnel their aggression and rage through X, the music, and out into the world. It took you into the darkness of his mind in the same way, Being John Malkovich took you deep into the psyche of Malkovich’s madness. It’s Dark and Hell is Hot is a masterclass in hip hop. It’s a non-stop playthrough. More than 25 years later, I still don’t pass a single song when I go back to listen to this. While you could certainly make an argument that Flesh of My Flesh is an equally essential and powerful album, this was the one that made X who he was and who he always will be to hip-hop heads. One of the greatest. RIP X.
Lil Xan blew up in the underground and emo rap scene in 2017 following the release of his song “Betrayed.” The track peaked at No. 64 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and Xan, real name is Diego Leanos, later signed a record deal with Columbia Records. After announcing his deal, the rapper also dropped his debut album, Total Xanarchy, in April 2018. Despite mixed reviews, the album sold 28,000 copies in its first week and debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 list.
Following the success of “Betrayed,” Lil Xan embarked on a tour that reportedly sold out in five minutes. He also began dating Noah Cyrus, the younger sister of Miley Cyrus, in June 2018. The California rapper appeared to be on the brink of stardom in the summer of that year. However, drug abuse, mental illness, and scrapped musical projects quickly derailed Xan’s rise by 2019. Since then, personal struggles have marred Lil Xan’s public image. It caused many fans to question what exactly happened to the once-promising rapper. Let’s look at the reasons behind Lil Xan’s fall from fame and find out where he is today.
Scrapped Projects and Lack of Music
Since the release of Total Xanarchy, Lil Xan has only dropped one other official project, a collaborative EP titled have a nice day with Chris Miles in 2022. The release of this project ended a four-year drought in which Xan announced many different albums, all of which failed to release. Xan gave contradictory statements regarding a second album and has yet to release another full-length project.
The beginning of his string of scrapped projects began in September 2018 when Xan announced he was releasing a tribute album to Mac Miller titled Be Safe. According to Xan, these were the last words Miller spoke before passing. Lil Xan planned to release the album in 2019, yet it ended up in production limbo. The rapper ultimately scrapped the project. Despite this, Xan announced another release in November 2019.
Moving Forward
Lil Xan planned to name this project When September Ends and posted a cover for the album to Instagram in December 2019. It was slated for release the following month; however, as with Be Safe, Xan didn’t drop the album. The album announcements did not stop, though. He stated his project was finished in January and revealed its name: Sorry I Didn’t Quit. Xan also posted an album cover to Instagram, which drew inspiration from Lil Wayne’s Sorry 4 the Wait. This was also apparently scrapped.
This string of unreleased projects turned many fans away from Lil Xan and also caused them to question his dedication to music. Xan also announced that he was retiring from music in late 2019 but later changed his mind. However, Xan’s contradictions about musical projects and his career haven’t been his only controversies.
Struggles with Addiction and Stints in Rehab
Xan’s struggles with addiction began when he was 18 years old after doctors prescribed him Xanax for anxiety. His reliance on Xanax and other drugs inspired his moniker, yet he has considered changing his rap name to “Diego” due to his addictions. Lil Xan has had multiple stints in rehab, and his drug abuse could contribute to his lack of musical productivity.
The rapper’s first stint in rehab occurred in December 2018, yet after two weeks, he left the facility, claiming to be sober. His first attempt to get clean was in response to the death of Mac Miller, which greatly affected him. However, in late 2019, Xan suffered multiple seizures after attempting to quit drugs “cold turkey.” This led to rumors that the rapper died, yet these were untrue.
In December 2021, Xan called out his former manager, Status Quo, for supplying him with drugs that almost killed him. This outing led to a wide array of online bullying directed at Xan. In March 2022, he was hospitalized in a psychiatric ward for three days after checking himself in on a 5150 hold. The rapper cited exhaustion, dehydration, and depression from bullying as reasons behind his mental health crisis. This event led to another stint in rehab.
Tour Controversy with “Dropout Kings”
In May of 2022, Lil Xan announced he was 40 days clean after spending 30 days at Scott Storch’s “weed-friendly” rehab facility. Xan stated he was “finally sober for once in my f*cking life” and was preparing for a tour with Dropout Kings. However, Lil Xan quit his tour in June of that same year after a dispute with the group. The Dropout Kings claimed that Xan left them cross-country and didn’t show up for his set. They also called the rapper a “total piece of sh*t.”
Xan responded that his next tour would be for the fans. He said he wanted to focus on sobriety and felt that being on tour would negatively impact this. Despite this, Xan’s quitting the tour proved a recurring theme of the rapper’s inability to fulfill commitments to his fans and peers.
Lil Xan Today
As of 2023, Lil Xan is still active on social media and is making music. Much of Lil Xan’s social media consists of posts promoting anti-drug use and documenting his sobriety. Despite rumors that he died, retired, or quit, Xan is still making music and is currently on tour, as he recently shared photos of a show he did in Spain. Many fans and contemporaries have shared their support for Xan in his battle against addiction, and they are thankful that he appears to be healthy. Although Xan has struggled with many issues since “Betrayed,” it is good to see that he is still going and pursuing his musical career.
