Donald Glover’s Best Roles, Ranked

There are a few Hollywood personalities who can match the talent of Donald Glover. The California native has proven to perform at the highest level on any stage. Glover has built a name for himself in entertainment for his musical, comedy, and acting talents. Yet, his most critically acclaimed role is as a creator of hit shows like Atlanta and the critically acclaimed new Prime Video series Swarm.

Additionally, Glover has production and writing credits on hit TV series like 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live and films like Guava Island.  He has starred and featured in successful and critically acclaimed movies and TV shows since his career beginnings in 2006. 7. The Lion King (2019)

Glover was involved in a Disney franchise. He lent his voice to the character of Simba in the 2019 Jon Favreau-directed live animation film, The Lion King. Favreau was tasked to remake a live adaptation of the 1994 animated film of the same name. It follows the life of Simba, a young lion trying to figure out his life in the African savannah. Scar, Simba’s uncle, falsely accuses him of killing his father, Mufasa. Scar takes over as king of the Pride Lands after Simba runs away to exile.

Simba is eventually found by her childhood friend and his future queen, Nala. Beyonce Knowles-Carter voices Nala’s character. She convinces him to return to the Pride Lands to challenge his uncle as the rightful successor to his father. The movie later reveals that Scar was the one who killed Mufasa. The movie grossed over $1.6 billion at the box office, making it one of the most successful films of all time.

6. Guava Island (2019)

Donald Glover stars in the Guava Island musical film alongside fellow musician, Rihanna. He plays the character of Deni Maroon, a Cuban musician determined to throw a festival for his island community. Kofi Novia, played by Rihanna, is his love interest. Red (Nonso Anozie) is the antagonist. He tries to stop Deni from creating a local music festival. However, it all turns out well in the end, as Deni successfully hosts and plays in the festival.

The film features songs like “Summertime Magic,” “This Is America,” and “Feels Like Summer.” Glover produced the records and performed them in the musical. Hiro Murai, Glover’s long-time music director, directed the film. The screenplay was co-written by Glover and his brother Stephen Glover. The film currently has a 74% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

5. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

Donald Glover’s inclusion in the popular franchise is a testament to his star power in Hollywood. The film tells the story of Han Solo, played by Alden Ehrenreich. Glover plays Lando Calrissian, a smuggler, gambler, and self-proclaimed sportsman on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld. Billy Dee Williams portrayed the character in previous Star Wars films.

The two actors met before shooting began, and Glover mentioned in the aforementioned GQ interview that Billy gave him advice on how to play the character of Lando best. The film debuted in May 2018. Glover’s portrayal of Lando was praised by critics despite underwhelming box office sales.

4. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Glover made a memorable cameo in the Marvel franchise that premiered in 2017. He plays Aaron Davis in the film. Spider-man confronts Davis, an illegal weapons criminal, in one of the scenes. Davis is alluded to be Miles Morales’ uncle. Miles is a character that Marvel has hinted to take up the mantel of Spider-man after Peter Parker (played by Tom Holland). The character of Miles Morales is also voiced by Glover in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series on the Disney XD channel.

3. Atlanta (2016 – 2022)

Donald Glover created and starred in the comedy-drama Atlanta. The plot follows the lives of Earnest Marks and Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles, played by Brian Tyree Henry. Paper Boi is a budding hip-hop artist, and Earn is his manager. The two are trying to navigate the ‘otherworldly’ portrayed Atlanta hip-hop scene.

Atlanta has a predominantly Black cast and a Black-only production crew. The show has a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Guardian ranked Atlanta at number 10 on its 100 Best TV Shows of the 21st Century list. The film has also won numerous awards, including a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Glover for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. He also won Best Actor in a Television Series at the Golden Globe Awards for the role.

2. Childish Gambino (2008 – )

Donald Glover goes by the stage name Childish Gambino when pursuing his musical exploits. He has released four albums, including the Grammy-nominated, Awaken My Love. “Red Bone,” one of the lead singles off the album, won a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance. However, his most popular song is the Billboard No. 1 record, “This Is America.”

After its release, the four-minute visual was the most talked about topic in the entertainment industry. It featured a graphic portrayal of themes like gun violence, civil unrest, and the dark side of social media. The music video won the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography Camerimage Award for Best Cinematography in a Music Video. It additionally won a Grammy for Best Music Video in 2019.

1. Community (2009 – 2014)

Donald Plays Troy Barnes in the NBC sitcom Community.  The show aired from 2009 to 2014. Troy is a former high school star quarterback who lost his scholarship to a top-tier university when he separated both shoulders doing a keg flip. During the show, we discover that he actually did this on purpose to escape the pressures of his popularity. Troy initially portrays the stereotypical behaviors of a football player in the series. But, he eventually becomes comfortable with his nerdy and carefree side after becoming best friends with Abed, a character played by Danny Pudi.

The show has six seasons, with Donald Glover playing the character of Troy in the first five. Community was the most nominated TV show in the 2012 Critic’s Choice Television Awards and won Best Comedy Series. During a GQ interview, Donald confirmed that they are currently working on a movie version of Community.

Ludacris Movies You Should Stream Right Now

Over the last decade, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges has swiftly transitioned from an A-list rapper to a popular movie star. The Atlanta native’s debut album Incognegro came in 1999 through his own record label, Disturbing Tha Peace. Def Jam repackaged the album to what fans came to know as Back for the First Time. This was after Def Jam signed Ludacris to the New York-based label. The record spawned hit singles like “Southern Hospitality” and “What’s Your Fancy.”

Ludacris climbed to the top of rap royalty with his subsequent albums and hit singles. He released seven more studio albums after Back for the First Time. His Release Therapy record won a Grammy for Best Rap Album. The lead single “Money Maker,” featuring Pharrell, also won Best Rap Song at the Grammys of the same year. Then, he released Ludaversal in 2015.  Some of his popular hit records include: “Area Codes” featuring the late-great Nate Dogg; “Rollout,” “Stand Up,” “My Chick Bad,” and “How Low.” Luda also made guest appearances on Usher’s hit singles “Yeah” and “Lovers and Friends.” Further, he’s featured on DJ Khaled’s club banger, “All I Do is Win.”   

Bridges is more recognized in Hollywood as a blockbuster actor than a hip-hop artist these days. This is largely because of his role in the multi-billion-dollar Fast & Furious franchise. He has appeared in six of the sequels. Luda has also signed to appear in the last two films of the franchise. Yet, the Fast and Furious Franchise films are not the only movies in his filmography. Here are some of the best movies the “Area Codes” rapper has appeared in so far.

End of the Road (2022)

Ludacris and fellow hip-hop alum Queen Latifah team up in this Netflix crime thriller, End of the Road. The film was released on the streaming platform in September 2022. It received mixed reviews due to its simple storytelling. However, it was a movie that showcased the acting range from Ludacris and Latifah.

Ludacris portrays Reggie, the brother to Brenda (Queen Latifah). She has two children, Kelly and Cam. The family is forced to relocate from Los Angeles to Houston after Brenda’s husband dies of cancer. Reggie, who hasn’t quite put his life in order, joins them to live with their mother while they get back on their feet.

John Henry (2020)

Ludacris stars alongside Terry Crews in this thriller drama film. The film had a limited theater release in January 2020. However, it was on Netflix that the film garnered viewership success. It premiered on the streaming platform in May 2020 and was the second most popular movie title at a certain point. Maurice Fadida and Eric B. Fleischman, who produced the movie, have expressed interest in a sequel after its initial success on Netflix.

The film is loosely based on the folklore of John Henry. Terry Crews plays John, while Ludacris portrays his crime-lord cousin, Hell. John is also an ex-member of Hell’s gang. The two cross paths after John tries to save two immigrant children from the clutches of his crime boss-cousin.

The Ride (2018)

The Ride is a heartwarming independent drama film that was released in 2018. It is available for viewing on Prime Video. The film received mostly positive reviews upon its release. Ludacris and Sasha Alexander play an interracial couple (Eldridge and Marianna Buultjens). They decide to adopt John, a minor initially placed in juvenile detention after a violent and racially charged incident.

The film centers on the couple’s efforts to help John overcome the challenges of his white supremacist upbringing. Eldridge and John slowly bond over the love of BMX riding and extreme sports. The family forms a bond of admiration, mutual respect, and redemption as the film concludes.

New Year’s Eve (2011)

New Year’s Eve is a romantic comedy that centers on several couples interconnected by their problematic New Year’s Eve experiences. The film is directed by Garry Marshall. It consists of an ensemble cast including Halle Berry, Jessica Biel Timberlake, Jon Bon Jovi, Robert De Niro, and Ludacris. Zac Efron, Katherine Heigl, Ashton Kutcher, Seth Meyers, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Sofía Vergara also appear.

Ludacris features as Lieutenant Brendan Nolan in the film. He is friends with Claire Morgan (Hillary Swank) and helps her make the final arrangements for the famous New York City New Year’s Eve ball drop. The film opened at No. 1 at the box office and has amassed $142 million worldwide. Critics, however, were not too kind to the movie, which several publications rated as one of the worst. Many suggested it was because of the bloated star-studded cast.

Gamer (2009)

Ludacris co-stars alongside action movie phenom Gerald Butler in this science fiction thriller film that premiered in 2009. The film also features Terry Crews, who would later join forces with Ludacris for the movie John Henry. Gamer is a classic tale of how technology can be used to control human beings against their will. Of course, there always has to be resistance in such movies to create conflict. Ludacris plays the character of Brother, the spokesperson and leader of the Humanz. The Humanz is a small group of activists who are against mind-controlling technology.

Hustle & Flow (2005)

Former rappers like Will Smith, Ice-T, and Ice Cube have certainly paved the way for rappers transitioning into movies. Film studios are more comfortable now than before, bringing hip-hop acts like Ludacris, 50 Cent, and even Quavo into film franchises. Things were a little more difficult in the 2000s and backward. Hip-hop artists, and to some extent, Black actors, had to settle for stereotypical roles to prove their talents.

However, that sidebar doesn’t diminish the brilliance of Hustle & Flow. The film debuted to rave reviews due to its direction and the acting prowess of Terrence Howard. Ludacris plays the character of Skinny Black. He is a famous Memphis rapper who crosses paths with DJay (Terrence Howard). The conflict between the two ‘alphas’ is brief but believable. Of course, in 2005, Ludacris was already a famous rapper, which also helped deliver his scenes with Howard.

Fast & Furious Franchise (2003 – )

The Fast and Furious franchise is a series of action-packed movies that revolve around street racing and international heists. They also have a strong theme of family. The first sequels centered on the relationship between Dominic Toretto, played by Vin Diesel, and Brian O’Conner, played by the late Paul Walker. Notable actors like Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, and Hellen Mirren appeared in the later films as the franchise grew.

Ludacris plays Tej Parker in the films. He was initially a street racer/referee and an old friend of Brian O’Conner.  The later sequels portray Tej as a tech genius, usually helping Toretto and Co. hack into various computer systems. He is frequently paired with Roman Pearce, played by Tyrese Gibson, to provide comic relief.

Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival: What Happened?

In November 2021, 50,000 fans packed into NRG Park for Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival. The festival was initially intended to be broken up into two crowds. However, all of the fans came together for the main act. Earlier in the days, the likes of Don Toliver and SZA performed. Fans enjoyed the day, and things moved with ease. However, things took a turn during Travis Scott’s set.

It’s been nearly a year and a half since Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival tragedy. Eight people died during the night of the concert. In addition, two more passed away in the hospital over the following days, and hundreds more sustained injuries. With Scott being a Houston native, his hometown concert would always be a hectic affair. The cause of the tragic deaths was related to a mass rush toward the front of the stage, resulting in hostile and claustrophobic conditions.

While watching multiple videos online, droves of audience members can be seen making desperate attempts to stop the show. Groups of screaming fans vaulted onto the stage to plead with workers to speak to Travis Scott. There were clear and repeated attempts to prevent the tragedies which took place. Amid multiple 911 dials, ambulances began to make their way into the crowd. However, the show largely continued during these occurrences.

There’s been a constant debate about the level of responsibility that should be levied on Scott. After Astroworld, he indicated that he wasn’t at fault for the tragedy. He stated, “Any time I could make out, you know, anything that’s going on, I just stopped my show and, you know, helped them get the help they need.” In fact, it’s not the first time Scott has been accused of doing a poor job of controlling his crowd. Stemming from an incident at Lollapalooza 2015, he was sentenced to a year of court supervision after pleading guilty to reckless conduct charges. Chicago officials stated that he had encouraged fans to vault security barricades.

Undergoing Criticism

This isn’t to say that Scott made no attempts to calm the crowd. Between 9:20 pm and 9:45 pm, he stopped the show three times to check in with the audience. Each of these times, he made brief statements such as, “Let’s stick together to make sure we’re all okay.” Scott’s lawyer has argued that his client had no idea about the extent of what was going on in the crowd. By 10:15 pm, Scott had abruptly ended the show. However, the Houston Chronicle reported that he continued to perform for 37 minutes after the festival had already been declared a mass casualty event.

Scott has also been heavily criticized for how he’s responded to the event. Whether it be deflecting blame or not directly addressing the situation, he’s kept his responses brief and hazy. With over 40 civil lawsuits being aimed at Scott, there’s no doubt that his lawyers have advised him not to speak too much. Mostly, he’s seemingly left the situation to his representatives. In his first interview since the tragedy with Charlamagne the God, the two spoke for an hour. Scott repeatedly stated, “We need to figure this out” or “Gather all of the details.” Fans responded to this interview with the understandable sentiment that these comments were coming far too late.

The Shift In Festival Culture

Labeled a mass casualty event, the Astroworld Festival has changed the landscape of concerts forever. Artists now worry about checking in on their audiences throughout large-scale shows. In retrospect, it feels as if the terrible occurrences at the Astroworld Festival were something that had been brewing in the trap scene. Mosh-pits had taken over concerts, with artists often doing little to address news of people passing out in the crowd. There was an existing culture of ignorance regarding artists maturely controlling crowds.

In addition, crowd members have become more conscious of the people around them since the incident. Undoubtedly, the hoards of lawsuits levied against Scott have delayed his highly anticipated album, Utopia. Only a few of these lawsuits have been settled, with Scott reaching an agreement with the families. However, there remains a cloud of doubt surrounding his future. While he’s undeniably shied away from the spotlight since the incident, he’s begun to return to performing. That said, it’s questionable if Scott can ever host his own festival again.

5. Ghetto Postage (2000)

The success of MP Da Last Don was sparked by its hit singles. “Make Em Say Uhh Part 2,” “Hot Boys and Hot Girls,” and “Goodbye To My Homies” each saw charting success upon release. “Make Em Say Uhh Part 2” reached No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Hot Boys and Hot Girls” also reached No. 19 on the same chart, while “Goodbye To My Homies” climbed to No. 27. MP The Last Don sold 4 million copies in America, making it one of Master P’s best-selling works. Master P also created a film, Da Last Don, to coincide with the album. 2. Ice Cream Man (1996)

Released on April 16, 1996, Master P’s fifth studio album was certified in both the streets and by the industry. Ice Cream Man was Master P’s first studio album to achieve RIAA’s recognition to become certified platinum. A fan favorite and a commercial success, the album’s two central singles saw a reasonable amount of time on the charts. “Mr. Ice Cream Man” charted at No. 55 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The album’s second single, “No More Tears,” charted at No. 78 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. On September 2, 1997, Master P released his sixth studio album, Ghetto D. Coolio’s Death: What We Know

Rapper Artis Leon Ivey Jr., known by his moniker Coolio, sadly passed away last year. Born in Monessen, Pennsylvania, Coolio grew up in Compton, California. This is where he would attend community college, got a headstart in Hip-Hop in the ’80s, and broke into the mainstream in the ’90s. The rapper held hefty titles, namely producer, musician, and actor. His first taste of fame was with the group WC and the Maad Circle, which comprised Coolio, Big Gee DJ Crazy Toones, and WC. The Hip-Hop collective devised by WC released phenomenal albums Ain’t a Damn Thang Changed in 1991. Later, Curb Servin’ arrived in 1995.

Coolio’s music career began in 1987 when he released “Whatcha Gonna Do.” He later released another banger in 1988, “What Makes You Dance (Force Groove),” featuring Nu-Skool. In 1994 shortly after WC left their rap group, Coolio signed to the independent label Tommy Boy Records. But soon, Coolio was discarded because of unpropitious sales of his third album. He turned to newer paths and formed a name for himself on TV. Later in his career, he became a contestant on Celebrity Big Brother 6, where he won 3rd place. Coolio kept up his reality tv star title until 2019.

Additionally, philanthropy became another suited endeavor he pursued. Coolio and a fellow artist friend, Jazz saxophonist Jarez, were spokespersons for Environmental Justice and Climate Change to teach students at HBCUs about global warming. Lamentably, the rapper died in September 2022 after being found unconscious on a bathroom floor. But what actually caused his untimely death? It’s been seven months, and the answers have been shared.

A Timeline Of Coolio’s Death

On Wednesday afternoon in September 2022, Coolio was found unresponsive on a bathroom floor. The captain of the Los Angeles Fire Department, Erik Scott, told CNN about the rescue call. He confirmed that his paramedics and firefighters received a call at 4:00 pm. They immediately performed emergency resuscitation for about 45 minutes. Moreover, Captain Scott confirmed Coolio died just before 5:00 pm that evening.

In addition, an autopsy report was conducted on the following day. Unfortunately, at the time, there was no apparent cause for the rapper’s death. Later, Coolio’s talent manager Sheila Finegan said, “We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend and client.” She continued, “He touched the world with the gift of his talent and will be missed profoundly.” Also, “Thank you to everyone worldwide who has listened to his music and to everyone who has been reaching out regarding his passing.”

Heartfelt Messages From Coolio’s Peers

More of his Hollywood peers, such as actor Lou Diamond Phillips, gave their condolences on his Twitter. “I am absolutely stunned,” he started. “Coolio was a friend and one of the warmest, funniest people I’ve ever met… We spent an amazing time together making Red Water in Capetown. And we loved going head to head in the kitchen. He was one of a kind.” He ended the tweet, “Epic, Legendary and I’ll miss him.”

Further, NBA player Matt Bonner shared his memories of Coolio on a Twitter post. “Huge hoops fan… we hosted him at a game a few years back… biggest crowd of all-time at a Spurs Overtime concert.” Additionally, close insiders reportedly disclosed that the rapper planned to dedicate a documentary to his children. The source mentioned that Coolio intended to honor them in future films.

Recent Cause Of Death Details Uncovered

Coolio developed a heart disease and asthma problem. They were induced by his long use of cigarettes, according to the family spokesperson, Jarez Posey. According to CBS News, the rapper also previous experimented with other illegal substances. According to reports by Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, Coolio’s death was induced by fentanyl and other drugs. The case detail pointed out the effects of heroin and methamphetamine as Cause A. Further, other vital conditions include cardiomyopathy, asthma, and recent phencyclidine use. In relation to cardiomyopathy, it is “a disease of the heart muscle.” It “makes it harder for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body.”

Regardless of the findings, Coolio is celebrated and sincerely missed. His legacy lives on through his family, friends, fans, and controbutions to the industry. Tyler, The Creator “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST: The Estate Sale” Review

In Tyler, The Creator’s video for the song “Sam Is Dead,” released in March of 2012, the 32-year-old donned a military uniform and executed his musical alter-egos. At the very end, presumably Tron Cat, Wolf Haley, and of course Sam end up in a ditch. These characters represent his early work: rebellious, unfiltered, and with angst that many can’t imagine him displaying today. About a year after this release came his studio album Wolf, which still dealt with these characters’ narratives and development. However, that album marked the first time that Tyler would significantly redefine his identity as an artist. As a young kid just getting into his world, I never would’ve imagined that “Sam Is Dead” would remain so relevant to Tyler Okonma’s work today. But The Estate Sale proves just that. 

Not only does it reiterate his refined musical prowess, but it’s a fresh example of him reclaiming his unbounded identity and skill in ways that his transitions from album to album can’t summarize. Before getting into the meat of the music, it’s important to acknowledge what The Estate Sale is. Per the Hawthorne, Los Angeles native, they’re “leftovers” from his 2021 critical hit CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST. He expressed on social media that it’s the first time he showed what he left off of a core album. To put it bluntly, the songs sounded just too damn good. Sure, one could argue that curation is what got Tyler to his career peaks in the first place. Still, CMIYGL is his travel album, and these tracks represent exploration and growth in a similar way. 

But how is The Estate Sale different from its parent project? The first thing that listeners could catch is a West Coast-inspired sound that more unabashedly honors Tyler, The Creator’s heroes. YG and Vince Staples give a strong Cali bounce to the breezy “BOYFRIEND, GIRLFRIEND” and the boisterous “STUNTMAN,” respectively. Both beats take inspiration from the work of Pharrell, whether for the former’s funky percussion and melodies or the latter’s bustling 2000s-era rap homage that feels like an unearthed Neptunes beat (Skateboard P actually helped produce this one). Regardless of his influences, T makes each sound his own. A beautiful bridge on “BOYFRIEND, GIRLFRIEND,” for example, makes for one of the expansion’s standout moments. Conversely, the eerie tones and heavy bass on “STUNTMAN” harken back to his early production with a modern sheen.

Other tracks on The Estate Sale, however, feel more characteristic of Tyler’s brand of vibrant and layered hip-hop. “DOGTOOTH,” the expansion’s first single, matches wondrous piano chords with wailing synth melodies, booming kicks, and crisp percs. “WHAT A DAY,” “HEAVEN TO ME,” and “SORRY NOT SORRY” are sample-heavy seas for Tyler, The Creator’s introspective verses to coast over with ease. Finally on the production side, “WHARF TALK” benefits from the high-pitched vocal delivery of albums like CHERRY BOMB and IGOR. He applies those skills with the infectious and soulful melodies of Scum F**k Flower Boy for a dreamy sonic pallet. With a snappy and smooth A$AP Rocky feature, the charming cut emphasizes one of Tyler’s thematic north stars: love.

However, Tyler, The Creator already established the versatility and progressive nature of his production throughout his past albums. As such, the instrumental pallets here definitely feel like an expansion. Hardcore fans could probably link each track to another in his discography. While many might see this as a slight towards The Estate Sale, it’s one due to definition rather than execution. It is just a set of bonus tracks, after all. If you haven’t liked Tyler’s work up until this point, chances are this won’t win you over. Regardless, that doesn’t make these beats any less rich in tone, progression, or passion. There’s something for everyone on this tracklist, from the most skeptical old heads to the recent explorers of the former Odd Future leader’s musical variety.

In terms of The Estate Sale’s lyrical content, this is where the heart of the album truly lies. Whereas his skills as an artist manifested quite vulnerably after Flower Boy, T’s done a good job of detailing his emotions while maintaining a sense of privacy as a celebrity. CMIYGL is his reflection on success and recognition; The Estate Sale is a reevaluation of what parts of that journey really matter to him. On “STUNTMAN,” he teaches other rappers how to stunt through confidence in their abilities and hard work towards perfecting them. Of course, he does a lot of material stunting on the song, but other tracks illuminate the lines in between. On that note, it seems that what Tyler, The Creator is most proud of on The Estate Sale is his artistry, attention to detail, and his financial and personal freedom. 

For every expensive brand drop, there are lines on songs like “WHAT A DAY” that show where his true gratitude lies. “So many white diamonds, yеah, I got jungle fever / But thеy didn’t raise me, so shout out Black women.” He thanks his friends for their advice, his family for their support, and his fans on the short intro “EVERYTHING MUST GO” for all his accolades. His focus is on individualism, creative liberty, and being able to support those around him. On “HEAVEN TO ME,” he reflects on three versions of heaven: the one he’s living, the one he wants to live in the future, and the one he lived as a teenager entering the industry. Along the way, he held true to what he wanted in each moment, while also allowing himself to change how he achieved his biggest dreams.

That gratitude even shows up sonically through his surprising (which is, at this point, unsurprising) choice to include two tracks from other producers. Madlib’s gorgeous sample flip on “WHAT A DAY” is a previously unreleased beat that a teenage Tyler skated home to. Meanwhile, “HEAVEN TO ME” boasts production from Kanye West, a progenitor in T’s artistic lineage. The instrumental’s tenderness and Tyler’s appreciative delivery makes for one of the sweetest tracks in his whole discography. What’s more is that he’s one of the few artists to wear his influences on his sleeve as stylishly and uniquely as the influences in question. Even the demo quality mix on “BOYFRIEND, GIRLFRIEND” and the boyish vocal performance on “WHARF TALK” harken back to some of his best work. Reflecting on his evolution is almost corny at this point. Tyler proves he’s much more than the sum of his many parts.

In the much-discussed video for “SORRY NOT SORRY,” Tyler kills his alter-egos again. This time, it’s as a shirtless and presumably raw version of himself. His seven personas, shown simultaneously, represent his seven albums, stating that each era is relevant and still within him. Over drama-tinged and grand production, he apologizes for all the things he did to succeed. Some apologies, like those to his mother and romantic partners, come across as sincere. Others, like those aimed at critics, are laden with unapologetic attitude. Throughout the track, he emphasizes that he can’t fully regret his choices, and selfish isn’t the word, either. By the end, all that’s left is Tyler Okonma, and like that, another era fell upon us. As he closes The Estate Sale, he stands as his biggest cheerleader. Through seven excellent and unique tracks, he inspires generations before and after him to cheer for themselves, too.
