On The Women Who Inspired Salt-N-Pepa
Well, we were inspired by Roxanne Shante. For sure. We did the answer to Slick Rick and Dougie Fresh’s “The Show.” We did “The Showstopper,” you know, she did her answer records. So, that was the inspiration. And along the way, it’s been a few, but one that sticks out story-wise is Sparky Dee.
When we were going on stage, she could see we were visibly nervous. And she gave us a real pep talk. Like, you know, “Just like go out there and do you, be you know, go hard, be confident.” I remember that really helping back in the day, and we’re still friends. Sparky. MC Lyte is also a friend that I’m inspired by, even now with everything she’s doing outside of Hip Hop. She always talks about how “My Mic Sounds Nice” was like, the song that like lit her up. So, those would be the people for me.
On Where She Would Like To See Hip Hop Evolve To Next
Um, I think the pendulum has swung really far in one direction. Balance again, you know, because when we were coming up, as you know, we had Lauryn Hill, who was The Educator. We also had Lil Kim, who was liberated sexually, we had Salt-N-Pepa, we brought fun fashion and femininity. Hip Hop, we had Latifah! Who was the Queen, Missy [Elliott], The Innovator. Like, there was so many choices, you know, and everybody was different, and everybody was authentic. I feel like we’re going in this kind of cookie-cutter direction. So, [I hope for] more authenticity, more balance, more opportunity for young people who have a different message than what’s popular to have a chance to be heard.
Advice She Has For The Next Generation
…I see so many artists Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston, you know, the biggest artists, just be consumed by this, by this business. To the point that they feel stuck and they don’t feel like they can get out. So, I would say…I know this is a really long, deep answer [laughs]!
HNHH: No, it’s fine! I’m tuned inon a deeply personal level. [laughs]
[Laughs] Just, like, just don’t be consumed by the business. Don’t be consumed by it. Keep your identity, maintain who you are. So that no matter what happens, you’ll be alright.

Rubi was born Rubi Rose Benton in Lexington, Kentucky, on October 2, 1997. She is a first-generation Eritrean and has two sisters. The rapper was very involved in sports growing up and was a cheerleader and a track star. She moved to Atlanta with her mother and sisters when she was still in high school. On October 31 in 2016, Migos released the music video for their acclaimed single, “Bad and Boujee.” Rubi Rose starred as the main model in the video, instantly shooting her to fame. After an additional year and a half of modeling, Rubi Rose began to release her own music. Later, in 2019, her single “Big Mouth” became a hit, which led to her signing with L.A. Reid’s HitCo label. Cardi B’s connection to rising stars hasn’t gone unnoticed. In fact, Charlamagne Tha God likened her to Jay-Z and Drake. On an episode of the It’s Up There podcast, he praised Cardi for her willingness to share the spotlight with other women in rap. “Salute to Cardi. With just one studio album out, it’s quite impossible to understand the heights of Cardi B’s popularity. Cardi B is restoring sisterhood in rap by sticking her neck out for several female rappers. Her connection to many rising stars in the game is quite remarkable. Furthermore, the women she has collaborated with have had nothing but wonderful things to say about her.
It’s as clear as day that Cardi B is a defining factor in the rise of femcees today. She has extended past the Hip Hop genre to become an outspoken, lovable media personality. In addition to this, by jumping on many artists’ tracks, she is awarding them hits of their own. Indeed, Cardi B is Hip Hop’s big sister, as far as many of today’s women in rap are concerned.
Eddie Morris, aka Scorpio, is a music legend. Also known as Mr. Ness, he was an original member of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, one of the most influential groups in music history. Scorpio was recruited to the group by Flash himself. However, Scorpio would leave with Melle Mel after Flash sued their record company for unpaid royalties from “White Lines (Don’t Don’t Do It)”. Scorpio would work closely with Grandmaster Melle Mel, including the release of 1997’s Right Now.
In 2022, Scorpio reflected on “The Message”, arguably the biggest hit of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. “I think one of the important things about that song is it just have us trusting in things that we didn’t trust in sometimes. Like with music, you gotta get out of your own ego. Because realistically, we hated that song. We couldn’t stand that song. We didn’t think that it had no reality to us, but thank God Ms. Robinson had the better vision. Thinking, because we was coming from the Bronx, that it’ll match better versus putting it with somebody else, or whatever the case may be. So just trusting in other people was the biggest lesson. We don’t have all of the answers. No artists have all of the answers.” Now he’s giving his flowers to the next generation of hp-hop.
“Everybody is doing their thing, females taking over,” Scorpio said in a 4th of July video. “Big up to all the sisters out there in the Bronx—Ice Spice, Scar Lip, all of them—even if it’s not your style of music, they gettin’ up out the mud, so we gotta salute.” Obviously, Spice and Scar are two of the biggest names in the game right now. Spice broke out with “Munch (Feelin’ U)” and “Bikini Bottom” in 2022. She’s followed that up with three top-10 singles this year – “Boy’s A Liar Pt. 2” [#3), “Princess Diana” [#4), and “Barbie World” (#7). Furthermore, she is a must-have on any festival setlist and is most recently coming off a performance at Wireless in London.
Meanwhile, Scar Lip isn’t quite at the same level of hype as Ice Spice but is gaining that popularity fast. Like Spice and “Munch”, Scar saw her song “Glizzy Gobbler” go viral on TikTok. That led to a record deal with Epic Records. She then kicked off 2023 with another breakout single, “This Is New York”. The most recent news out of her camp is that she might have a collab with Cardi B in the works. 2023 has been a huge year for women in rap, but there is still a lot of fierce backlash towards their inclusion. However, messages of support from the likes of legends like Scorpio go a long way to helping rectify that.
Charlamagne Tha God feels like Cardi B’s using the blueprints of Jay-Z and Drake during her recent feature run. Although fans have been waiting on the follow-up to Invasion of Privacy, Cardi hasn’t necessarily delivered a single or a timeline of when we could expect her album. Perhaps, we won’t see it in 2023 but she’s held it down so far with a number of solid verses alongside up-and-coming women in hip-hop who are delivering the hottest music out.
Last year, Cardi B joined GloRilla on “Tomorrow 2,” which helped the song become one of the biggest records of the year. Then, the Bronx rapper extended her talents to Latto’s “Put It On The Floor Again,” a song that seems to already have summer 2023 in a chokehold. This Friday, Cardi will join buzzing MC Fendi The Rapper on “Point Me To The Sl**s (Remix).” According to Charlamagne Tha God, Cardi B’s employing a tactic that we’ve seen both Drake and Jay-Z use in the past.
Charlamagne Compares Cardi B Feature Run To Jay-Z & Drake
During a recent episode of Its Up There podcast, Charlamagne Tha God and Big Loon discussed the era of women in hip-hop who are dominating the genre. However, Charlamagne gave Cardi B credit, specifically, for opening the gates for this new chapter in the culture. “Cardi shifted that in the culture,” he explained. “Cardi made it to where you’re the OG, you’re the person who made all the money, you sold all the records but you have no problem putting your arm around that next person.”
Charlamagne added, “Cardi did for female rap what Jay-Z and Drake did, you know what I mean?” The Breakfast Club co-host explained that Jay-Z would hop on buzzing records and catapult it to the top. He cited records like Juvenile’s “Ha! (Remix)” and other records from the South. Meanwhile, Charlamagne Tha God said Drake similarly used his platform to help introduce new artists. “What Drake did was make the record big. I think what Jay did with those co-signs is make the artist big,” he said, “I think Cardi’s doing both. The pair’s introduction to music vastly differed. Folayan comes from a highly musical family that would perform together, especially the siblings. She says she’s been involved with music in one way or another “pretty much my whole life.” Meanwhile, while Bobbi’s family was entrenched in the music they loved, they weren’t performers themselves. Bobbi explains she “had to figure it out all on my own,” and things took a turn when she moved to California to attend music school. It was there that she first met Folayan.
“We were acquaintances, like cool, close acquaintances. We hung out in the same friend groups,” said Bobbi. “It was always good vibes, and we always admired each other, but we’re both very introverted. Because of that, it would be rare where we would ask each other to meet up, even though we loved hanging out and got along so well.” Folayan added, “Every time we would hang out, it’d be so much fun. We’d talk the whole time. It was always so natural and easy, and nothing was ever weird.”
It wasn’t until Folayan packed up and moved to Van Nuys, California, did the ladies reconnect. They were too far from one another, and their growing friendship was taking an artistic turn. Bobbi began playing her music for Folayan, who was impressed with the production. An idea to join forces was expressed, and as they say, the rest is history…in the making.
The two rising stars aren’t just best friends and collaborators but fans of one another. “I’ve always admired Folayan’s music and her vibe,” said Bobbi. “Ever since we first met, I thought, ‘Whoa, this girl’s amazing!’ She was always ahead of her time to me. I always used to do music alone. I used to write, produce, and record all by myself because I felt very nervous about being creative around other people. Folayan alleviated all of that because she believed in me, and she always encouraged me.”
