Tyga And YG Call Their Shot On “Platinum”

Frequent collaborators Tyga and YG are back with a brand new song; this time, they’ve got their sights set on a hit. The two California MCs have made plenty of songs together in the past. Just last week the pair teamed up with Blxst for a new single “West Coast Weekend.” This week they’re back with another new song “Platinum.” While there’s still no more news about their reported collaborative album they seem to be inching closer.

On “Platinum” Tyga and YG drift away from the wavy vibes of their new single last week into something much more hard-hitting. The sunny, west-coast, hard-hitting gangster raps are nothing unfamiliar to either artist. They both do their thing on the track and still have as much chemistry as ever. The music video for the song is about what you’d expect. It features bold cars, beautiful women, big chains, and signals of California in every direction.

Tyga And YG Go “Platinum”

For Tyga, it’s been a bit of a slow start to 2023 so far. He released his own single “Day One” back in May. His only other appearance came on the OHGEESY song “Chrome Hearted” where he lends a guest feature. More music could be coming down the pipe for Tyga soon though. A recent report pointed out that he’s been in the studio a lot with Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker recently working on music.

For YG it’s been even more scant. The two collaborative singles he’s dropped with Tyga have been his only new music this year so far. He did still make some noise when he attended Tupac’s long-awaited Hollywood Walk Of Fame star ceremony. After the event, his car was allegedly stopped by police and searched. His last full-length album I GOT ISSUES was released back in November of last year. What do you think of YG and Tyga’s new single? Let us know in the comment section below.

Quotable Lyrics:
You know how many b*tches thugged out off the liquor?
Straight tequila shots, so it’s f*ckin’ up my liver
Shoutout 800, that’s my motherf*ckin’ hitter
That’s my killer, that’s my dawg, that’s my motherf*ckin’ n*gga

Gunna Feels Betrayed But Resilient On “turned your back”

Gunna’s latest album a Gift & a Curse is easily one of the most anticipated and immediately talked-about rap projects of the year so far in the mainstream. Not only is the College Park MC beloved for his musical output over the years, but his plea deal in the YSL RICO case after months in jail caused a large debate around his status and whether he could be labeled a “snitch.” It’s something that will unfortunately follow him around in his career for the foreseeable future. However, with this new set of tracks, he takes a big step towards reclaiming an elevated status in the game. Some of that had to do with his response to that conversation, but much of it comes thanks to the effective songwriting, layered production, and compelling narratives on tracks like “turned your back.”

First, the instrumental here is among the most dynamic and detailed that the 30-year-old has tapped in quite some time. The track opens with a muffled and brooding set of percussion that’s eventually replaced by cleaner drums led by a sharp snare and subtle hi-hats. In terms the melodies and harmonic elements of “turned your backs,” Gunna employs a lot of techniques to convey the atmosphere. Whether it’s mournful guitars, harmonized and ethereal background vocals, plucked strings, soft piano, or haunting synth pads, there’s a lot to chew on here. For those critical of his typical sound, this may be a welcome display of sonic depth.

Gunna Stuns On “turned your back”

Then there’s the “Banking On Me” rhymer’s performance, which is similarly versatile. A harmonized chorus lands on a somber melody, complemented by more tuneful flows throughout his verses. Still, he speaks on topics of betrayal, disloyalty, and disappointment with a resigned focus and almost tender vocal approach. It’s not unlike anything he’s done before, and will be right in many’s comfort zone. Still, this joins the ranks of “back to the moon” as a serious highlight on a Gift & a Curse, albeit for very different reasons. Check the album out on your preferred streaming service and peep some notable bars down below. Let us know what you think of the project down in the comments below. Dave East Takes On The Problems Of Wealth With “Rich Problems”

Dave East is back with a new banger that has a pretty clear message. “Rich Problems” is a hard-hitting new song that delivers exactly what it promises. East goes into detail in the lyrics about the various trapping of money and fame. The song also came with an extravagant new video that sees Dave going all around Abu Dhabi. It’s full of imagery that feels like a perfect back drop for his lyrics about what wealth can do to someone.

Dave East has been releasing music constantly all year so far. He dropped a deluxe edition of his album Book Of David from last year. The record was made in collaboration with DJ Drama and Buda & Grandz. He also dropped TRAP MIAMI II, or at least the first half titled Side A. The project is a collaboration with TutxTut that’s expected to get a full edition later this year. He’s also released a bunch of new singles with artists like WHOISTEVENYOUNG, Uncle Murda, Young Chris, and Ambezza.

Dave East Tackles “Rich Problems”

A few weeks ago East dropped “Clarity Pt. 2” a sequel to his Nipsey Hussle collaboration. He’s also been releasing a series of freestyles over some notable beats recently. The most popular so far has been his take on Lil Uzi Vert’s “Just Wanna Rock.” His version of the song featured Nino Man and came attached to a fun looking music video at a party.

Dave East and Papoose had a discussion about fatherhood on a recent podcast appearance. They were both guests on the Listen To Black Men podcast and when the discussion of fatherhood came up they had quite a bit to say. Dave East has two daughters who often come up in the subject matter of his songs. What do you think of Dave East’s new song “Rich Problems?” Let us know in the comment section below.

Royce Da 5’9″s New Track For Tully

Earlier this year, Royce Da 5’9″ had some massive praise to dish out for one of his favorite current rappers. In an Instagram post he made back in February, Royce described Tyler, The Creator as “one of the greatest.” He also made some waves last year when he claimed that he and Black Thought might release a collaborative album at some point. He revealed that the pair had been working on an album, but busy schedules got in the way before they could finish it. That won’t come as a surprise to anyone following Black Thought. After concluding his Streams Of Thought series the Roots rapper has made collab albums with Dangermouse and El Michels Affair in the last two years.

Lupe Fiasco Goes Hard On New Song “Checkin’”

Lupe Fiasco has treated fans to his second new release of 2023 so far. The new song, called “Checkin’” dropped last night. It was surprise-released at midnight after Lupe originally announced it would come out at noon today. The track features a hard-hitting beat and Lupe being as lyrically creative. The one surprising part is how much of it all is how much autotune is deployed over his vocals.

“Checkin’” is the second single Lupe FIasco has dropped this year. Back in April, he released “SentRock.” The track was a collaboration with the artist of the same name who made a painting based on Lupe’s lyrics. The resulting painting ultimately became the album cover of the single. Lupe teased the release of “Checkin’” last week on Twitter. In a discussion over the potential for making music using the new Apple Vision Pro Lupe still saw fit to remind fans that new material was going to come out.

Lupe Fiasco Checks In

Lupe Fiasco’s most recent album DRILL MUSIC IN ZION dropped last year. The record saw the rapper interpreting the sound of drill music within his own style. Back in March, Lupe was named the Saybrook fellow at Yale. It’s a further foray into education after he was given the title of visiting professor at MIT last year. After starting some beef with Kid Cudi earlier this year, Lupe took the opportunity to shout out some other rappers that he actually does like. Most notably he called Ja Rule his “favorite rapper” to the surprise of many of his fans.

Lupe Fiasco also made a tweet last week pledging his support for the 2024 election. He backed People’s Party candidate Cornel West in a short statement posted to Twitter. Clearly, he’s left more politically motivated than usual by the candidate’s platform stating it will be the “first and only time” he votes. What do you think of Lupe Fiasco’s new single? Let us know in the comment section below.

Quotable Lyrics:

IDK is an artist who is constantly evolving and giving his fans some amazing sounds. For instance, he recently dropped off an album called F65 which possessed a dope racecar driver aesthetic on the cover. Moreover, whenever IDK comes through with an album, you know there is likely going to be a concept attached. This has led to an increased interest in his music. Conceptual art is always fun to consume, and the artist continues to make that the case.

Now, it appears as though he is back with yet another new track. However, this effort was made specifically for the soundtrack of the Apple TV+ show Swagger. The series is going into its second season, and it is tapping in with some big artists for this new undertaking. Of course, IDK is one of them, and on Friday, he dropped off a song called “Win.” As you will hear, this is a song that takes listeners in an interesting direction. However, we think a lot of fans can appreciate the risk.

IDK Comes Through In A Big Way

Overall, this track has a very jazzy sound to it. From the drums to the horn section, there is a lot to like about this track. Moreover, IDK gives us some laid-back flows and confident lyrics. It is clear that he is trying to escape the negativity with the song. Ultimately, it works in his favor. Hopefully, we get to hear more of this sound from IDK in the future. Gucci Mane And Lil Baby Team Up On New Song “Bluffin”

Atlanta rappers old and new are teaming up on a new single. Rap veteran Gucci Mane teamed up with superstar Lil Baby for a new song “Bluffin.” Lil Baby leads the track off and it sounds a lot like you’d expect it to. From the nocturnal beat to Lil Baby’s slurred flows and Gucci Mane’s drug talk, both artists feel perfectly in their element.

“Bluffin” is the fourth new single Gucci Mane dropped this year. It follows “King Snipe,” a collaboration with Kodak Black dropped back in January. “06 Gucci” dropped two months later and saw Gucci teaming up with 21 Savage and DaBaby. Just last month he followed them up with “Pissy” alongside Roddy Rich and Nardo Wick. After the release of “Bluffin,” Gucci told Apple Music that his new album was officially titled Breath Of Fresh Air.

Gucci Mane spoke to Apple Music about the origin of the name for his new project. “Ever since, I guess November of when Dolph passed away and my artist Scarr passing away and Takeoff passing away and Pooh locked up and Foo locked up locked up, that’s why I kind of named my album A Breath of Fresh Air,” he explains. He further spoke on how the subject matter of his new music aims to set an example. “I’m just not in the mood to hear a whole bunch of drilling and killing and this and that and not saying that I haven’t did that before, but just right now, just let me just kind of lead by example and show people that it is more to rap about than my opps and all that.”

A few weeks ago, Gucci Mane teamed up with Meek Mill to perform at Rick Ross’ car show. What do you think of Gucci Mane and Lil Baby’s new track? Let us know in the comment section below.

Quotable Lyrics:

I tried to lead by example, helped everybody get money

Stayed in motels with my family and did pushups with my bunky

Pharrell Teams Up With Voices Of Fire For New Song “Joy (Unspeakable)”

Pharrell Williams has dropped his new single “Joy (Unspeakable).” The track is a collaboration with the Virginia-based gospel choir Voices Of Fire. That really isn’t all that surprising given that they’re from the same home state but there’s an even more obvious connection. Voices Of Fire’s founded, Bishop Ezekiel Williams is Pharrell’s own uncle. “Working with Pharrell is always an amazing experience that not only inspires you, but drives you to dig deep within yourself for the best you have to offer,” the Bishop said in a press release attached to the song.

The press release also highlighted the impressive roster of talent involved. “When the dream team finally came together on this song—Pharrell, Voices of Fire, Pastor Larry George, and yours truly—I knew that moment in the studio was one of destiny,” the statement reads. A documentary called Voices Of Fire was released on Netflix a few years ago. The doc chronicled how Bishop Williams and Pharrell worked together to assemble a non-traditional choir. The song became a highly-anticipated new release following Pharrell’s teases on social media earlier this week.

Pharrell Alongside His Uncle’s Choir

The track is Pharrell’s second new single of 2021. In April he joined Kaytranada and Amine on their song “4EVA.” The song served as the lead single for the pair’s new collaborative album KAYTRAMINE. Lats year he also featured on the hit songs “Cash In Cash Out” with Tyler, The Creator and 21 Savage as well as “Down In Atlanta” with Travis Scott.

Outside of music, Pharrell has also stayed busy. Last month Louis Vitton announced that his debut collection as Head Men’s Designer would come later this month. Just this morning it was announced that Rihanna was coming on board as the face of his new campaign. Tell us what you think of Pharrell’s new song in the comments below.

Quotable Lyrics:

But I’m Humbling Myself And I’m Giving Praise
Fumbling By Myself, They Don’t Know Who’s Hating
If You Crumble Anyhow, I Know Who Can Raise You
