Owen Wilson & Matt Rife To Star In Comedy Film About Rolling Loud Festival

Hip-hop festival Rolling Loud is apparently making its way to the big screen, as Deadline reports that Owen Wilson and Matt Rife will star in a film (simply titled Rolling Loud) about a father and son attending the shindig in Miami. RL is actually celebrating its tenth year in 2024, led by a Playboi Carti performance that fans are pretty skeptical about. Apparently, production for the flick will begin this weekend for the extravaganza’s Florida iteration, and American High’s Jeremy Garelick wrote and directed this film. The movie is reportedly based on a true story of a stern and strict father (Wilson) sneaking his 13-year-old son into the world’s largest rap festival alongside a volatile colleague (Rife) and a festival worker.

Furthermore, this Rolling Loud film boasts production from none other than Live Nation Productions (a division of Live Nation Entertainment) and will take advantage of the festival’s tenth anniversary to set the stage. Garelick and Will Phelps will produce for American High, and Stella Bulochnikov will produce for Pat Solitano Productions and Jolene. Apart from the cast (so far) of Owen Wilson and Matt Rife, other crew members include executive producers Ryan Kroft (Live Nation), Pasquale Rotella, Matt Zingler, and Tariq Cherif (Rolling Loud, Rife, Christina Shams).

Owen Wilson & Matt Rife Will Attend Rolling Loud Very Soon

As for Rolling Loud‘s distribution, UTA Independent Film Group will handle worldwide rights and plans for a 2025 release. We’ll see what Owen Wilson and company cook up with this movie, which should make for a pretty fun romp or at least a curious film. After all, festival attendees are probably curious to see if they see their experiences reflected on the silver screen. Performers move many commitments around to make an RL slot, so the crew has big shoes to fill and a huge journey to capture.

Meanwhile, Rolling Loud often boasts a pretty rowdy clientele, so production on location should yield some very interesting and notable perspectives. Maybe this film will turn out to be another Hollywood flop or Owen Wilson and company actually pull something special together. In either case, we’re very interested to see how this shapes up.

Asap Rocky Lands The ‘Main Role’ In Spike Lee’s Upcoming Film ‘Highest 2 Lowest’

The official release date for Asap Rocky’s album Don’t Be Dumb is up in the air. But, there is a more certain project featuring the “Tailor Swif” rapper on the way.

According to Deadline, Asap Rocky’s return to film is approaching. During a sit down with outlet acclaimed director Spike Lee confirmed Asap Rocky’s involvement in his forthcoming film, Highest 2 Lowest.

In Lee’s words, Rocky will star in the picture’s “main role.” Others slated to appear in the film include Ice Spice (which was announced in April), Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright, and Denzel Washington.

Although Lee is remaining tight-lipped about the film’s production details, he wants to stress it is not a remake.

“This is not a remake,” he told the outlet. “This is a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s great film.”

Lee continue to detail the differences between the works, saying: “In Kurosawa’s film, Toshiro Mifune is a shoemaker. In our film Denzel Washington is a music mogul with his own label and his reputation as the best ears in the business. So, this is the fifth film with the dynamic duo.”

If Don’t Be Dumb isn’t out by then, maybe Asap Rocky can cook up a soundtrack for the picture.

ASAP Rocky To Play Lead In Spike Lee’s New Film “Highest 2 Lowest”

ASAP Rocky is a talented performer. He rose to fame as a rapper, of course, but he has excelled in numerous mediums. He’s become a renowned fashion model courtesy of collabs with Calvin Klein and PUMA. Now, ASAP Rocky is going to take the plunge into acting. He’s dabbled in film before, but the upcoming crime drama Highest 2 Lowest will represent a huge step forward. Rocky, born Rakim Meyers, will play the lead in a new Spike Lee joint.

Highest 2 Lowest was announced in February 2024. The buzz surrounding the film stemmed from the reunion between director Spike Lee and actor Denzel Washington. The duo are responsible for several classics dating back to the 1990s, and they haven’t worked together in two decades. The assumption was that Washington was going to play the lead, but a new report from Billboard proves this to be untrue. Instead, ASAP Rocky will be taking center stage. “The main role … is ASAP Rocky,” Lee said during the 2024 Red Sea International Film Festival. “People will see when it comes out. It’s dynamite.”

ASAP Rocky Has Been Acting Since 2015

Oscar-winning director Spike Lee, a Freedom Award honoree, answers questions on the red carpet ahead of the National Civil Rights Museum’s 33rd Freedom Award ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024 in front of the Halloran Centre in Memphis, Tenn.

ASAP Rocky’s charisma has proven to be effective on the big screen. He made his feature film debut in Dope (2015), before turning in scene-stealing performances in Zoolander 2 (2016) and Monster (2018). Highest 2 Lowest will represent a huge leap in terms of collaborators and prestige. Rocky is also slated to appear in the upcoming dramedy If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. The A24 release will be produced by the Safdie brothers, proving that Rocky’s transition to movie star is in full effect.

Day one Rocky fans know there is a consequence to this new career path. The rapper has been teasing the release of his new album, Don’t Be Dumb, for years. He promised it would drop in 2024, and even released pre-order links. Unfortunately, ASAP Rocky confirmed that the album would be delayed, yet again, to 2025. Pre-order links were subsequently refunded. Don’t Be Dumb has yet to get a proper release date, despite. ASAP Rocky having dropped three well-received singles. The announcement coinciding with news of his role in Highest 2 Lowest does not feel like a coincidence. His mind is on seemingly everything but the music. On the bright side, Highest 2 Lowest sounds like it’ll be great.

At just 12 years old, Blue Ivy Carter is already starting to carve out her own role in the entertainment industry. In 2019, she won a Grammy for her work on mom Beyoncé’s “Brown Skin Girl,” and now, she’s readying to make her movie debut (in a voice-acted role) in Mufasa: The Lion King, which is set to release on December 20.

There was a premiere for the film last night, though, where Blue Ivy posed on the red carpet with parents Beyoncé (who voices Nala as she did in the 2019 Lion King movie) and Jay-Z (here’s a video).

Beyoncé, ever the proud mother, shared some photos of Blue Ivy at the premiere and wrote on Instagram, “My gorgeous baby girl. This is your night. You worked hard and you did such a beautiful job as the voice of Kiara. Your family could not be prouder. Keep shining.”

The post got some supportive comments from people like Ty Dolla Sign (a raised hands emoji), Flo Milli (“aw congratulations”), and Leona Lewis (“So special [heart emoji]”).

Meanwhile, it was recently announced that Beyoncé will be part of the NFL’s effort to give itself a more significant Christmas presence, by performing a special halftime show.

Big Sean Took His Mom To Netflix’s ‘The Six Triple Eight’ Premiere To Honor His Grandmother Who Served In The Historical Battalion

In “One Man Can Change The World,” from Big Sean‘s 2015 album Dark Sky Paradise, the Detroit rapper pays tribute to his grandmother for becoming “a female black captain” in the military, “when being Black you had to extra-extra try.” As it turns out Netflix and Tyler Perry have made a movie about the historical Women’s Army Corps battalion in which his grandmother served. The Six Triple Eight tells the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only predominantly Black battalion to go overseas in World War II.

So, it’s only right Sean took his mom Myra to the premiere, as noted by Netflix’s Twitter account:

The Uproxx cover star called his mother his biggest supporter in his interview for the feature with our own Elliott Wilson, as well as during the album’s rollout. ““I appreciate my mom for being that guardian angel always giving me that advice,” he told his Instagram followers during a livestream. “She really talked me through it for real. Like I said, I haven’t been sleeping a lot. I been giving this sh*t my all. I’m burned the f*ck out. I’m tired. I do do this sh*t for the people that f*ck with me. I’m excited. That’s one thing my mom said, ‘Get excited! Drop — Your album is fire!’ Everyone around me keep saying that.”

Is Beyoncé On The ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Soundtrack?

The Lion King — not the animated masterpiece from 1994, but the live-action remake from 2019 — made over $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. It’s not unreasonable to think that at least a few million bucks of that total is from people who wanted to hear Beyoncé voice a lion. The “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer voiced Nala in the 2019 film, and she’ll be back for the prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, directed by Oscar winner Barry Jenkins.

Last time, Beyoncé also released a tie-in soundtrack album, The Lion King: The Gift, featuring Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, 070 Shake, Tierra Whack, and Pharrell Williams, among others. Is she planning on doing something similar for Mufasa: The Lion King?

Is Beyoncé On The Mufasa: The Lion King‘Soundtrack?

It doesn’t appear so.

Disney released the tracklist for Mufasa: The Lion King Original Soundtrack on Monday, and there’s no mention of Beyoncé. But cheer up: we get to hear Mads Mikkelsen, Keith David, and Rebel Ridge breakout Aaron Pierre sing!

The Lion King has an incredible musical legacy with music from some the greatest songwriters around, and I’m humbled and proud to be a part of it,” Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the songs for the soundtrack, said in a statement. “It’s been a joy working alongside Barry Jenkins to bring Mufasa’s story to life, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience this film in theaters.”

You can see the tracklist and watch a video below.

Mufasa: The Lion King Original Soundtrack Tracklist

1. “Ngomso” by Lebo M
2. “Milele” by Anika Noni Rose and Keith David
3. “I Always Wanted A Brother” by Braelyn Rankins, Theo Somulo, Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison, Jr.
4. “Bye Bye” by Mads Mikkelsen, Joanna Jones and Folake Olowofoyeku
5. “We Go Together” by Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Preston Nyman and Kagiso Lediga
6. “Tell Me It’s You” by Aaron Pierre and Tiffany Boone

Mufasa: The Lion King Original Soundtrack comes out on December 13, followed by the movie on December 20.

Ice Cube Alleges Hollywood Shut Down His Script For A New “Friday” Movie

Ice Cube is not only one of the most influential rappers of all time, but one of the art form and culture’s most extracurricularly decorated exponents. He’s led basketball leagues and starred in a lot of visual media, one of his most famous being the classic 1995 comedy Friday alongside Chris Tucker. It got two sequels in 2000 and 2002 respectively, but it seems like Hollywood higher-ups felt that the weekend was over. The Los Angeles MC went on Cam Newton’s Funky Friday podcast to reveal that studio executives shut down his script for another installment, although the timeline is unclear.

“Like, I know what it needs to be, and they don’t,” Ice Cube remarked to Cam Newton. “So, they had a guy in there named Toby Emmerich for years, and he wouldn’t make the movie. I was trying to get it made. I wrote a script, they said it was…” Then, Cube explained his idea for the script, and revealed that he wanted to get Chris Tucker back. “They was like, ‘Ah, jail’s not funny. It’s too much time in jail. How can you make jail funny?’ I’m like, ‘Man, y’all don’t know what the f**k y’all talking about.’ Then they come out with Orange Is The New Black, Let’s Go To Prison, all these movies about that. And I’m like, ‘See? More Hollywood execs don’t know what the f**k they’re talking.’”

After that comment, Cam Newton asked why Ice Cube didn’t seek the help of another film company or filmmaker to get this new Friday movie out. “It’s not that simple,” he replied. “We did the movie through New Line, and they attached to all the sequels. Has to come out through New Line. I was trying to take the movie to another studio.” So it looks like the West Coast icon wasn’t able to fulfill his mission, but maybe he gains the public leverage to convince New Line for good.

Meanwhile, Ice Cube just released his new album Man Down, and to hear him return to the rap space is something special. Hopefully, one day, he can get back to this franchise.

A New Movie Based On Pharrell’s Childhood Will Feature Halle Bailey, Janelle Monáe, Anderson. Paak, And Missy Elliott

Pharrell had one of the year’s most notable movies with Piece By Piece, a biopic animated in the style of Lego. He’s not finished telling his story through film yet: It was just revealed he’s teaming up with Michel Gondry on Golden, a movie set for 2025 that was inspired by his childhood.

The cast is led by Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Halle Bailey. Bailey isn’t the only noteworthy musician in the movie, as the film also features Janelle Monáe, Anderson. Paak, and Missy Elliott. The cast is rounded out by Da’vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, and Quinta Brunson.

Of the movie, Pharrell tells Empire:

Piece By Piece is about my life, whereas Golden is about a neighborhood that I grew up in. This is very different. It’s a musical expedition, set in the summer of 1977 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with the spirit of the music [of that time]. You know how in Dirty Dancing and Grease, the music was almost a character? That’s what it’s like in this film. It’s a coming-of-age story about self-discovery and pursuing your dreams, but it’s so much more magical than that. It’s a celebration of Black life, Black culture, and most importantly, Black joy.”

The film was originally titled Atlantis, after the housing development where Pharrell grew up. Of the name change, Pharrell explains, “It just speaks to the narrative, the area, the energy and literally everything about [the film, which is] this analysis of what being ‘golden’ is. Children and grown-ups with inner children within them can connect to it and realize that there’s a golden aspect to them too, whether it’s realized or latent.”
