The Michael Jackson Biopic’s Official Release Date Has Reportedly Been Pushed Back

Michael Jackson died 15 years ago. Yet still, the crowned King of Pop’s music continues to dominate streaming platforms. That is sure to spike after the late singer’s biopic hits theaters. However, according to reports, Michael has been delayed.

According to Deadline, the highly anticipated pictured directed by Antoine Fuqua has officially been pushed back to 2025.

Originally Michael was slated to be released around Easter 2025 (estimated around April 18-20). Now, based on the outlet’s exclusive report Michael has been locked in for October 3, 2025. Deadline speculates that the delay was a strategy call to get Michael “positioned in the awards corridor next year.” Given that producer Graham King (the Oscar award-winning Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody) is continued to the project, the adjustment makes sense to both die-hard fans of Jackson and film critics alike.

The release dates seems to be the only change to the movie thus far. Universal Pictures remains at the helm of the film’s international production duties. The title role is still held by Michael’s nephew Jaafar Jackson (Jermaine Jackson’s son). Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo will also star in the movie as John Branca and John McClain serve in the producers seat with John Logan responsible for the script.

An early synopsis described the project as a “look at the complicated legendary recording artist from his human side to the his public and private struggles.”

A first look at forthcoming film (viewable here) has set supporters’ expectations high.

Frank Ocean’s Directorial Debut: Everything To Know So Far About The Singer’s Rumored A24 Movie

Frank Ocean
Getty Image

Since putting out the stunning Nostalgia, Ultra EP in 2011, Frank Ocean has only released two albums: 2012’s Channel Orange and 2016’s Blonde, both stone-cold masterpieces. (There’s also the visual album Endless, but that was mainly an opportunity to f*ck over Def Jam.) Ocean has teased that a new album might be in the works, but like another member of the Odd Future collective, he has other creative passions — including directing a movie?

Here’s everything we know about the rumored Untitled Frank Ocean Movie, as I’m going to call it for lack of an official title, including plot details and the cast.

Plot

Back in 2022, Discussing Film reported that Ocean is “looking to write and direct his own feature film,” and that “indie distributors A24 and 2AM are in talks to make it happen.”

No plot details were provided, but if a Frank Ocean-directed movie is going to end up anywhere, it’s A24. His songs are all over 2019’s Waves (“I was listening to those albums and dreaming about making this movie,” writer and director Trey Edward Shults said), and he wrote the forward to the Moonlight screenplay book. 2AM is less established, having only been founded in 2021, but the production company is building a promising track record: Bodies Bodies Bodies, Past Lives, and the upcoming (and very erotic) Babygirl.

That initial news — which, it’s worth nothing, hasn’t been confirmed by A24 — was the last we heard about Untitled Frank Ocean Movie. Until…

Cast

The InSneider‘s Jeff Sneider reported this week that Taylor Russell is “in talks” to star in Untitled Frank Ocean Movie.

The actress previously starred in Waves, so there is a loose connection to Ocean, although she’s best known for her magnificent performance in Luca Guadagnino’s cannibal romance Bones and All. Russell’s co-star in Bones and All? Timothée Chalamet, who was interviewed by Ocean back in 2018.

You can read the highlights here (the original source, VMan, doesn’t work anymore), but my favorite part is when Ocean brings up Chalamet’s high school alter ego, rapper Timmy T. “Oh, f*ck. I can’t believe you saw the statistics video. That’s embarrassing,” the Dune: Part Two actor said, to which Ocean replied, “I saw it on Ellen. I figured if Ellen’s talking about it, then it’s fair game.” (2018 was only six years ago, but it feels like 60.)

Release Date

No release date has been announced, and as someone on the Frank Ocean subreddit joked (?), “Well once Frank sees this post, he’ll probably scrap the whole project.”

Trailer

I’m thinkin bout the Untitled Frank Ocean Movie trailer… which unfortunately doesn’t exist yet. Hopefully soon!

Kanye West Claims Watching New Doc Made Him Feel Like He Was ‘Dead’

Kanye West is one of the most polarizing celebrities of the 21st century. He’s also one of the most fascinating. He has been through so many artistic iterations and controversies that it can difficult to keep track. Fortunately, a new documentary titled In Whose Name? will do it for us. The documentary is set for release sometime in 2025, and follows teenager Nico Ballesteros as he accompanies Kanye West on his various business ventures.

Ballesteros directed the documentary, which is produced by the production companies Goodfellas and Utopia. The press release for In Whose Name? promises to explore “overlapping influences of corporate exploitation, racial complexities and psychological struggles inherent in the American dream.” It’s a lot to deliver upon, but Kanye West’s response to the doc leads us to believe it delivered. Ballesteros posted a screenshot of a text exchange with West when the rapper watched the final cut. His response was, in the classic Ye sense, dramatic. “The doc was deep,” he asserted. “It was like being dead and looking back on my life.”

Kanye West Previously Criticized His Netflix Doc Series

Ballesteros took the weighty statement to heart. “This is the most profound text message I have ever received,” the director wrote back. “I love you brother.” Kanye West has seemingly played a much bigger role in the making of In Whose Name? than the previous documentary about him. Netflix released a three part saga titled Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye West Trilogy in 2022. The series was released without West getting a chance to see the final cut, which he revealed in a since-deleted IG post. Clarence ‘Coodie’ Simmons and Chike Ozah, the Jeen-Yus creators, told Digital Spy that they refused for fear of compromising their artistic vision.

“It’s not an autobiography of Kanye, you know,” Ozah stated. “It’s not a type of documentary where it would serve the doc best for him to have ultimate control.” Kanye West attended the Jeen-Yus premiere, but it’s clear from his text exchange with Ballesteros that he’s a much bigger fan of the upcoming doc, In Whose Name? The documentary is reported to have been shot over the last six years, and the budget is alleged to have been $1 billion. We can’t wait to see what West himself saw when the doc is released.

The Weeknd’s ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ Film With Jenna Ortega And Barry Keoghan Gets Worldwide Distribution From Lionsgate

The Weeknd’s album Hurry Up Tomorrow is coming to theaters as a thriller film. According to Deadline, the film version will be Abel’s feature-starring debut (he previously appeared as himself in the Safdie brothers’ 2019 crime thriller Uncut Gems) and will also star thriller vets Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. The director, Trey Edward Shults, is best known for his 2017 horror film It Comes at Night and the 2019 drama Waves. The film will be distributed by Lionsgate, which has signed on as the worldwide theatrical distributor.

So far, there are few details about the film’s story, but judging from the videos already released from the album, including “Dancing In The Flames,” “Timeless” featuring Playboi Carti, and “São Paulo” with Brazilian star Anitta, you can bet it’ll have an eye-popping, mind-bending psychological edge.

Abel flashed leading-man potential in his debut starring role in the HBO series The Idol, but hopefully, Hurry Up Tomorrow will manage to avoid repeating the mistakes of that troubled production, which led to lukewarm critical reception and an early cancelation. At the very least, we know it’ll have a great soundtrack, with Abel putting the promotion for the apparent soundtrack in the lead this time around. While neither the album nor the film have announced release dates yet, the sheer amount of music that has already been suggests that neither can be very far off.

New Kanye West Documentary Reportedly Hitting Theaters Next Year

After the jeen-yuhs documentary on Netflix and various other visual projects, it seems like Kanye West has yet another documentary in the works on his magnanimous life and career. Moreover, it’s reportedly titled In Whose Name? according to Variety, although we advise readers to take this with a grain of salt as it’s all early information. Nevertheless, it’s reportedly helmed by Nicolas Ballesteros and is planned to release in theaters in 2025. A promo reel for the film will reportedly drop on November 7 via a screening at the American Film Market. We also got the first image from the doc from Goodfellas and Utopia, who will reportedly take care of the promo reel screening.

“With a billion-dollar budget and a commitment to truth, Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, invites 18-year-old Nicolas Ballesteros armed with an iPhone on a six-year journey revealing unfiltered aspects of celebrity life which confront the provocative opinions, grand visions and bold contrarianism that defined him as the world’s most controversial artist,” the doc’s synopsis reportedly reads. “The film follows Ye’s ascent to becoming the richest Black man in American history while uncovering why the superstar risked everything he had built in the name of freedom. Examining the culture that birthed the star, ‘In Whose Name?’ explores the overlapping influences of corporate exploitation, racial complexities and psychological struggles inherent in the American dream.”

Furthermore, the project reportedly filmed over the last six years, boasting never-before-seen footage while promising to “offer a unique and cinematic perspective on Ye’s public transformation.” According to reports, the Kanye West doc is in post-production and enlisted Ballesteros as producer along with Jack M. Russel and Shy Ranje as co-producers. Justin Staple is the co-executive producer of In Whose Name? and David Bullock is its associate producer.

“We’re thrilled to present ‘In Whose Name?’ at AFM,” Marie Zeniter (V.P. of sales at Utopia) and Eva Diederix (head of sales at Goodfellas) reportedly stated. “This powerful documentary offers an unfiltered view without narration, it invites audiences to draw their own conclusions on themes of fame, religion and power. We believe audiences globally deserve the chance to witness how one of the world’s most influential figures navigates the complexities and contradictions of celebrity.” In an alleged text message exchange with Ballesteros, Ye said the following of the doc according to Ballesteros’ recent Instagram post: “That doc was very deep. It was like being dead and looking back on my life.”

NLE Choppa has caught some heat for some of his actions online. It relates to his music as well, especially as of late due to how overtly sexual he has portrayed himself to be. Overall, the young rapper is not everyone’s cup of tea, but he doesn’t seem to be pandering to anyone. He’s going to make career choices that he wants to make and he’s not going to conform to other’s expectations. NLE Choppa is taking risks like with his SLUT SZN merchandise, for example. Overall, it looks to be a raunchy and over the top movie, but true to Choppa’s brand. The film is also being produced by an independent entertainment company by the name of VisionBank Films. As for the story and script, it’s conjured up by NLE and BenMarc, who’s shot music videos and a Nightmare on Cottonwood short film for the rapper in the past. Fans seem to be down for it for the most part and look forward to what he has to offer up in his debut movie.

Lul Tim Documentary Trailer Hits The Internet As Lil Durk Arrest Controversy Continues

Chicago drill is at the forefront of a lot of divisive and controversial conversations around hip-hop right now, mostly bolstered by the recent arrest of Lil Durk for alleged murder-for-hire conspiracy. For those unaware, federal authorities accused him of allegedly putting out a hit on Quando Rondo in retaliation for King Von’s murder, and a 2022 shooting in Rondo’s vicinity resulted in his cousin Lul Pab’s death. Another associate, Lul Tim, faced accusations of murdering Von back in 2020, and we now have a new trailer for a documentary on Tim’s life, career, and legal troubles stemming from street conflicts and other matters.

For those unaware, authorities dropped their charges against him for allegedly murdering King Von last year, which folks had some split reactions to overall depending on where they stand in the whole Lil Durk and Quando Rondo situation.

The ‘Venom’ Voice Is Actually Influenced By Hip-Hop, According To Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy Venom The Last Dance UK Premiere 2024 (1024x437)

Tom Hardy has made a lucrative career off of his voice (among other things). But his accent in his coveted role as Eddie Brock in the Venom series takes the cake for some fans (not so much in The Bikeriders).

So, now that Venom: The Last Dance is in theaters, the beloved twang has returned. During a sit down with MTV, Tom Hardy spoke about the inspiration behind the voice he uses for Venom.

“One of the big inclusions that Kelly [Marcel] and I put into the melting pot of our, sort of, creative process is throwbacks to when we were kids,” he said. “What do we enjoy? Rap music…it was hugely influential for me as an artist, the spoken word, and what you can create with just a voice & some words. Also, some of the tonal qualities of certain MCs are larger than life.”

Hardy then went on to name some of those recording artists. “If you look at Method Man, Redman, Busta Rhymes, [and] Biggie Smalls,” he said. “There’s something about them that’s larger, bigger, and epic in the soundscape that they have. So that underpinned immediately when being playful and using a soundscape.”

He closed by saying: “It was logical that Venom had to fall into the canon of Busta Rhymes, Method Man, Redman, James Brown, you know?”

SZA, Keke Palmer & Katt Williams Star In New “One Of Them Days” Trailer

One Of Them Days is scheduled to release on January 24, and we just got a new trailer for the comedy film that shows how zany it could turn out. For those unaware, the film stars SZA and Keke Palmer and revolves around their characters’ quest to improve their financial situation and deal with all the hassles of being roommates. Additional performances come courtesy of Katt Williams, Maude Apatow, Janelle James, and more as oddball personalities that the main duo comes across. Also, Issa Rae produced this flick, so there are a lot of reasons to be excited. It looks pretty funny, with a style that seems ripped right out of the 2000s era of blockbuster gut-busters.

With all these personalities on-screen, you can imagine that they all had a lot of fun on set as they got to know each other and collaborate. But perhaps some colleagues got closer in ways that they didn’t expect. If you hadn’t already heard, Harper’s BAZAAR recently published an interview between Kendrick Lamar and SZA that’s generating a lot of conversation right now. During it, she revealed a curious anecdote about working with Katt Williams.

SZA & Keke Palmer’s One Of Them Days: Watch The Trailer

“We shot a movie last night,” SZA expressed. “I’ve never shot a movie before, so I was freaking out. It’s a lot of being scared to be myself, I’m either gonna pretend it never happened or not show up to the premiere. I met Katt Williams [on set]. He told me I was mentally ill, like, as a compliment. He was like, ‘Sa, I believe you might have some mental—’ And I was like, ‘Illness?’ And he was like, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Oh, welcome.’”

Let us know down in the comments section down below if you’re looking forward to One Of Them Days and what you thought about the trailer. It will probably be very fun to see SZA and Keke Palmer bounce off of each other on the big screen. At the very least, it’s a nice change of pace from the busy career moves and salacious gossip stories that they face every now and then. Maybe this inspires the TDE artist in particular to act more!

Lyrical Lemonade’s Cole Bennett Will Direct New Chief Keef Documentary

Chief Keef is a Chicago legend, and a hip hop legend. He pioneered a sound that’s still being used and expanded upon today. Keef’s legacy has also been defined by his legal troubles, and the various beefs he’s had with other artists. Both of these aspects will serve as the basis for the upcoming documentary about his life. Variety confirmed that a Chief Keef documentary is in the works, and Lyrical Lemonade’s Cole Bennett will serve as the director. It will mark Bennett’s feature directorial debut.

The documentary has yet to receive a proper title. That said, Variety provided some crucial details about the film and what fans can expect. It will chronicle Chief Keef’s meteoric rise to fame in the late aughts. The influence that the rapper had on Chicago’s drill scene will be explored and his impact on music as a whole will be fleshed out. The doc will utilize the framework of Chief Keef’s recent return to Chicago. This is following a decade plus of being banned from performing in the city. Keef’s set at the Summer Smash Festival marked his first show in the Windy City since Lollapalooza in 2012.

Chief Keef’s Doc Will Detail His Musical Influence

The timing of the documentary makes perfect sense. Chief Keef reputation and career were in the wild for most of the 2010s. It was unclear if the rapper would ever get a chance to reclaim his spot as a music pioneer. Fortunately, the acclaim given to his recent releases, and his Summer Smash stint, have signaled a change. Chief Keef talked about said his outsized influence during a May interview with the Grammy Awards. “If I had 500 M’s every time [I heard that], I’d be Jeff Bezos,” he quipped. “I be hearing that a lot, though, man… We know. I used to get mad about it, but I don’t give a f*ck.”

The documentary will also provide a major turning point for Cole Bennett. The Lyrical Lemonade creative has been one of the most in-demand music video directors of the last decade. He’s thrilled to be making the transition to narrative films, however. He retweeted the Variety article announcing the documentary, and wrote: “My first film, Chief Keef documentary.” A release date has yet to be announced. The untitled doc will be produced by Kenya Barris, as well as Lyrical Lemonade’s Jake Millan and Krista Worby.
