Oscar Nominee Tems’ Absurdly Expansive, View-Blocking Dress Inspired Jokes And Fury In Equal Measure

Tems attended the Oscars with a nomination in the Best Original Song category for co-writing “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther. The song, performed by Rihanna during the broadcast, lost to “Naatu Naatu” (by Kala Bhairava, M. M. Keeravani, and Rahul Sipligunj) from RRR. Yet Tems — as with fellow nominee Lady Gaga (who performed “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick) — also made headlines for what materialized on the red carpet.

Actually, Tems’ red carpet look overflowed into the semi-stratosphere of the Dolby Theatre. The “Essence” collaborator (who nabbed a spot on our the Most Anticipated R&B Albums Of 2023 list) attended the awards ceremony in a Lever Spring/Summer Couture dress. The gown burst out of all structural confines on the red carpet, and that includes the dramatic headpiece, which remained in place when she took her seat.

As a result, several people who were seated behind and surrounding Tems ended up not being able to see the show. The “stratus cloud” effect was real:

Yep, Tems ended up blocking views from people who either tweeted about this absurdity or were photographed as such.

Was this a “rude” move as noted on Twitter?

Or was this a case of purposefully “taking up space” to express confidence with being seen and heard as a Black woman?

Both statements can be true and valid, as a few Tweeters noted.

Still, the debate raged between people who found Tems’ strategy to be less than polite at a seated event (the headdress could have been adjustable, at least?)…

… and those who offered plentiful support for the aforementioned “taking up space” concept.

Rihanna’s ‘Lift Me Up’ Performance At The Oscars Garnered The Singer A Standing Ovation, And Rightfully So

Rihanna’s Super Bowl LVII performance may have sparked quite a few (unjustifiable) compliments to the FCC, there’s no one complaining about her performance during tonight’s (March 12) 2023 Oscars ceremony. Gleaming with immaculately jeweled costuming and pregnancy bliss, performed “Lift Me Up” from Wakanda 2: Wakanda Forever.

The moving tribute track to the late actor Chadwick Boseman brought the entertainer out of musical retirement. With her baby bump on full display, Rihanna took the stage built out to resemble the breathtaking nature shots shown in the film. Backed by a full orchestra and a host of background singers, the singer belted out the emotional lyrics to the song, which was rewarded with a standing ovation after her conclusion.

When asked about what went into creating the tribute track, co-writer Tems said, “After speaking with [director Ryan Coogler] and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life. I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them. Rihanna has been an inspiration to me so hearing her convey this song is a great honor.”

All eyes are on the 2023 Oscars for several reasons. The first, of course, is the potential history to be made depending on who walks away with the winner. The second is whether or not and in which ways this evening’s host Jimmy Kimmel will address last year’s infamous. Well, during Kimmel’s opening monologue, the television host and comedian held nothing back, starting with the slap.

But as the monologue continued, a few other public figures caught a few strays, including television host, actor, rapper, and comedian Nick Cannon. Cannon and his eleven children were on the receiving end of Kimmel’s throwaway jokes.

When poking fun at Avatar: The Way of Water and just how much money the film had to earn in order to break even, Kimmel pulled in Cannon’s large family. “Avatar: The Way of Water was the most expensive movie ever made. Disney spent 2 billion dollars to make this movie. Just to break even, all of Nick Cannon’s children had to see Avatar four times,” joked Kimmel.

Cannon hasn’t commented on the joke just yet. However, he, himself has used his love of procreation as a punchline in his own works. In fact, earlier this week, Cannon filmed a mock game show skit titled, Who’s Having My Baby, with Kevin Hart.

Ke Huy Quan Delivers Heartfelt Oscars Acceptance Speech

Ke Huy Quan brought the crowd to tears with his emotional acceptance speech at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday night. Quan received the award for Best Supporting Actor in honor of his work on Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All at Once. Quan began his speech by thanking his mother who was watching from home.

“My mom is 84 years old and she’s at home watching. Mom, I just won an Oscar!” he said while fighting off tears. “My journey started on a boat. I spent a year in a refugee camp. And somehow I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage. They say stories like this only happen in the movies. I cannot believe it’s happening to me. This, this is the American dream.”

From there, Quan thanked his “Goonies brother for life,” Jeff Cohen, with whom he appeared in the 1985 film, The Goonies. He also thanked his wife, Echo. “I owe everything to my wife, Echo,” he said, “who, month after month, year after year, for 20 years told me that one day my time will come. Dreams are something you have to believe in. I almost gave up on mine. To all of you out there, please keep your dreams alive.”

Other actors nominated in the category included Brendan Gleeson for The Banshees of Inisherin, Brian Tyree Henry for Causeway, Judd Hirsch for The Fabelmans, and Barry Keoghan for The Banshees of Inisherin. Later in the night, Quan’s co-star, Jamie Lee Curtis, took home the award for Best Supporting Actress. By the end of the night, Everything Everywhere All at Once will compete for the highly-coveted Best Picture award. Other nominees include All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tár, Top Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness, and Women Talking.

The Razzie Awards, which took place this weekend, are the annual ceremony that celebrates the worst in film. They are the opposite of the Oscars and host their show around the same time as the Academy’s glamorous event. This year markedly saw Machine Gun Kelly and Mod Sun taking home the dubious honor of worst directors of the year for their movie Good Mourning. The film stars Colson Baker as an actor, with his real-life BFF playing his on-screen friend. It also stars Megan Fox, who is in a turbulent relationship with MGK.

The movie remains a commercial failure. It received next to no positive reviews, and many have called it a complete mess. The recording artist’s project also only made $21,348 after a short time in the theaters. Now the directors of the film get to take home an appropriate award for their directing skills. While the movie Blonde beat Good Mourning for the worst movie, it appears Andrew Dominik did a better job at directing. Aside from the aforementioned award, MGK was also nominated for the worst actor in his movie. However, he was beaten by Jared Leto.

MGK And Mod Sun Win At Losing

Machine Gun Kelly got his start in acting in 2018 and directing in 2021. His first time behind the camera was his latest venture with Mod Sun. The two seem to enjoy working on movies together, as they reunited on Good Mourning after their previous film, Downfalls High. The latter has a much better reputation than their current “award-winning” release. The former arrived in 2021 and is a dramatic musical that showcases Baker’s musical capabilities.

Along with MGK and Mod Sun, there are many others that joined the pair in winning awards this weekend – and not at the Oscars. Disney’s Pinocchio won worst remake, while Jared Leto and Tom Hanks won worst actor and supporting actor for their appearances in Morbius and Elvis, respectively. Currently, neither of the Good Mourning directors has commented publicly on their new and unflattering accolades. Taking on his first role in the 2002 film, All About the Benjamins, Moss posed as Kelly “Lil J”, a con artist who was caught in the middle of a bounty hunt for a stash of diamonds and lottery tickets. Though his acting premiere was a short cameo, as his character was arrested by the bounty hunter before the movie gained momentum, he debuted his skills beside actors Ice Cube and Mike Epps.

Lands His First Leading Role

Moss’ next role would be the one to catapult him into the acting world with many roles to come. In the same year he appeared in All About the Benjamins, Moss was in the sports comedy film, Like Mike. Moss’ character, Calvin Cambridge, is a young orphan with an interest in basketball. He and his friends are to sell chocolates for the orphanage’s director and upon their sales. Calvin meets and impresses an NBA coach with his basketball knowledge. The coach gives him tickets to the next game of the L.A. Knights (a parody of the L.A. Clippers). He had a winning number to participate in a halftime contest where he won with a wildly impressive slam dunk. 

However, had it not been for the pair of Michael Jordan basketball shoes he found on a power line, which ended up electrocuting him, giving the boy magical powers to perform like MJ, he likely would not have been able to win the contest being that he only stands at 4 feet and 8 inches tall. 

When Calvin astonished the team’s coach with his “Jumpman” skill, he was signed to a full-season contract with the Knights. He later has his MJ shoes stolen before his team’s last game to make the playoffs. Managing to retrieve them, he makes it to the game just in time to give the Knights a comeback against the Toronto Raptors. Though he ended his time competing with the Knights and was eventually adopted, the shoes gave Calvin a purpose that transpired into a confidence that would teach him and the team lessons of dignity, hope, and how to believe in yourself. 

And the Comedies Keep Coming…

Moss’ next lead role would be in the 2004 film, Johnson Family Vacation. Moss’ character DJ, who wants to be a rapper, and his comedic father Nate, played by Cedric the Entertainer, embark on a family road trip. But before they could leave, Nate goes to the auto shop to pick up what he thought would be the same vehicle he dropped off, but finds that his 4Runner had been pimped out with hydraulics and spinning rims. The new effects of the car end up causing hilarious obstacles for the family as they travel to a reunion with other family members. 

Though the trip was costly, DJ was able to prove to his father at the reunion that he was indeed a skillful rapper when he performed in the music category during the “Family of the Year” competition. This causes DJ and his family to win, and ultimately bond even more as Nate decided to give the winning trophy to his family opponent, saying that family was the only trophy he needed. This proves to DJ that he and his father do in fact relate, as the approval and pride his dad showed when he won their family the trophy were all each of them needed during their road trip.

First Drama Film Evokes Emotion from Him That had yet to be seen

Bow Wow would star a year later in the 2005 dramedy film, Roll Bounce alongside Nick Cannon, Maegan Good, and again, Mike Epps. Leading his roller-skating crew “The Garden Boys”, Moss’ character Xavier “X” Smith hurdles through a rough life at home after his mother dies and his father loses his job. Though his dad, Curtis played by Chi McBride, falls short of supporting his family through his own sorrow, Curtis ends up buying X a new pair of roller skates just in time for him and his team to compete in the new rink.

Though the “Sweetwater Rollers” stole their performing song, X and his crew tied their rivals. But there had to be a winner, so X faced off against Sweetness from the Sweetwater Rollers for the title. He ended up losing when he fails his attempt at a triple-lutz jump. But, he ends up bringing his family back together after tragedy and forms an unbreakable bond with his roller-skating crew, instilling a feeling of lifelong prosperity. 

Stars in Drama War Film, Continues to Move Fans with Emotional Roles

Starring in the 2012 war film, Allegiance, Bow Wow takes on one of his most serious roles yet. In this moving drama, Bow Wow serves as a combat medic. He is supposed to deploy to Iraq with his New York National Guard Unit. His character, Specialist Reyes, has a son with lung cancer and applied for compassionate reassignment, but was denied. He flees the base on multiple occurrences before deployment in hopes of remaining with his son. Though Reyes is arrested for failing to serve his term, all charges are dropped for fear of exploiting the National Guard poorly. He eventually is granted leave and reunites indefinitely with his son. This makes for a happy ending to a rollercoaster of emotions evoked by Moss.

Becomes Part of the Fast And Furious Franchise

Taking on one of his best-supporting roles in the Fast and Furious franchise, Bow Wow appeared as a standout character in two of its nine movies, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and F9. His character “Twinkie” is an established drifter that moved to Tokyo when his family was relocated for the army. He sells stolen goods to provide for himself. He ends up meeting Dom Toretto when he sets him up to race his friend Sean. 

Twinkie eventually moves to Germany to build cars for the government. But, he stays in contact with Toretto by selling him weapons, gear, and cars. Moss’ character may not make a return for the two-part Fast and Furious final chapter. But, F9 director Justin Lin opened up to Entertainment Weekly about Moss’ role in the saga. He said that , “I remember Lucas and Jason and Bow talking to Sung about a conversation they had when we were shooting ‘Tokyo Drift’ and it was just a continuation of it, and that kind of connection was great.”

What to Expect Next from Shad ‘Bow Wow’ Moss

When Bow Wow went on the 2022 Millenium Tour with singer and actress Keri Hilson, they teamed up. He is now in the sequel to Hip Hop Family Christmas. The upcoming film, Hip Hop Family Christmas Wedding has yet to release its debut. But, the VH1 film will most likely be available this winter. Moss appeared in the saga’s first film as Blair. But, the sequel is to include more about Blair’s love life and street sense. As for other works from Moss, he confirms with 105.1 FM that something is on the way with BET.
