The Culture Parlor, led by visionary filmmaker Ayana Morris, unveiled its inaugural mobile art installation, “Don’t Touch My Hair,” at Harriet Tubman Square during the Newark Arts Festival. This immersive exhibit, designed to challenge societal norms surrounding Black hair, marks a significant cultural moment in Newark’s artistic landscape.

The opening ceremony, held on October 11th, featured esteemed guests, including Newark Mayor Ras J Baraka, Congresswoman LaMonica McIver, and Rutgers University–Newark Chancellor Jeffrey Robinson. The event commenced with a powerful address by Ayana Morris, who highlighted the exhibit’s mission to celebrate and reclaim Black identity through art.

Once inside the “Don’t Touch My Hair” exhibition, the viewer is immersed in seven moving images that explore various aspects of Black women’s hair. Themes such as bondage, resistance, embrace, assimilation, and survival are highlighted. A powerful poem accompanies these visuals, helping the audience grasp the struggles and triumphs Black women have experienced with their hair. For example, the image on assimilation portrays a woman with blow-dried straight hair, symbolizing the pressure to conform. In contrast, the theme of survival reflects on how hair was braided into maps, guiding the path to freedom for slaves. The exhibition features a full service salon installation with products from renowned hair product company Mielle. Illuminated by ambient lighting, dynamic table dressings and reflective mirrors, the exhibit encourages introspection on the historical and cultural significance of Black hair, creating a space for dialogue and empowerment.

Throughout the weekend, attendees enjoyed a series of events, including the Hair Gala, which encouraged attendees to express their creativity through elaborate hairstyles while enjoying a panel discussion. Saturday’s conversations with Allure’s Jessica Cruel, Shauna Kay, Barri Gibson, Amanda Mitchell, and Kela Walker, and Jennifer Edwards covered Black Women’s Portrayal In Print Media, Black In Beauty, as well as leveraging social media. On Sunday, The Grit & Glam Brunch honored influential figures Mikki Taylor, Misa Hylton, and Claire Sulmners for their contributions to Black beauty and fashion. Panel discussions, live performances, and a vibrant Hair Gala further enriched the festival’s theme of “Radical Reimaging,” enhancing Newark’s cultural vibrancy. Music was provided by DJ Sienna.

Ayana Morris’s “Don’t Touch My Hair” will remain on display at Harriet Tubman Square until November 15, 2024, inviting the public to engage with its transformative narrative.

Misa Hylton Announces Memoir with Revealing Instagram Post

Misa Hylton

Last week, celebrity stylist Misa Hylton, mother of Bad Boy Entertainment CEO Sean “Diddy” Combs’ oldest son Justin, announced that she is penning a memoir. Hylton gave her followers a sneak peek into what they can expect from her forthcoming book in an Instagram post that vividly recalls a pivotal moment in the early days of Bad Boy Entertainment.

In her post, Hylton reflects on the tumultuous year of 1993 when she was pregnant, and Diddy, then known as Puffy, had just been fired from Uptown Records. She shares how Andre Harrell, Uptown’s founder, told Diddy that “there cannot be two Kings in a castle.” With a child on the way and having recently moved into a beautiful new home, Diddy was scared. Hylton recounts how he had her call Harrell several times to ask for his job back, but Harrell stood firm, insisting that it was time for Diddy to strike out on his own.

“I told Puffy he could do it. He was a mastermind. He just had to do exactly what he had been doing successfully at Uptown Records, just for himself now,” Hylton wrote. Her unwavering belief in Diddy’s potential played a crucial role in the foundation of Bad Boy Entertainment, which started in their basement in Scarsdale, NY, with help from the legendary accountant Bert Padell.

One of the most memorable moments Hylton shared was the night at the Palladium when Diddy handed DJ Funkmaster Flex the record “Flava in Ya Ear” by Craig Mack. The crowd’s ecstatic reaction confirmed that they were on the right path. “Everyone went CRAZZZYYYYYY. Puff looked at me and said you see this shit Mees!! I just smiled,” Hylton reminisced. “It’s Bad Boyyyyyyy.”

Hylton’s memoir promises to offer a personal and unfiltered look into her life and the early days of Bad Boy Entertainment. She emphasizes the cultural impact and legacy of the movement, urging people to remember and respect the contributions of everyone involved.

“My Life Story. My experience. Beside every Bad Boy was a Bad gyal!” Hylton declared. She also requested her followers to refrain from negativity and instead pray for all involved. “You cannot erase history and cultural impact. This is also OUR legacy. EVERY single person whose blood, sweat, tears, talent, and business acumen went into this movement.”

Hylton also corrected a common misconception about her age when she had Justin, noting she was 19 and turned 20 a week later. She ended her post with a heartfelt tribute to the late Craig Mack, Notorious B.I.G., Andre Harrell, and Bert Padell, who all played significant roles in the Bad Boy legacy.

The memoir promises to be an inspiring and candid look at the highs and lows of building one of the most iconic music labels in history, as well as a testament to Hylton’s resilience and belief in the people she loved.

Misa Hylton Reflects On Diddy Founding Bad Boy Records In Controversial Instagram Post

The Diddy scandal has made it pretty much impossible to look back at his prime Bad Boy Records days without a dark context hanging over it. Nevertheless, a lot of folks from back in the day have spoken about their experiences in both positive and negative ways, with fashion designer Misa Hylton’s latest post becoming the latest point of controversy. Moreover, she reflected on how Sean Combs kicked the record label off after Uptown Records and its founder Andre Harrell fired him. While not many people expressed admiration or sympathy this time around, it’s a key hip-hop story that will likely endure, hopefully with the recognition of Puff’s abuse of Cassie and his other crimes (if found guilty, as he stands by his innocence).

“1993,” Misa Hylton’s post about Diddy began. “I was pregnant. Puffy just got fired from Uptown records. Dre said there cannot be two Kings in a castle. He was right. It comes a time. Puffy was scared. He had a child on the way and we just moved into a Big beautiful new home. He had me call Dre and ask for his job back several times. Dre stood on business. The same way a father would when it’s time for his son to make that move. I told Puffy he could do it. He was a mastermind. He just had to do exactly what he had been doing successfully at Uptown Records. Just for himself now.

“I wasn’t scared,” Misa Hylton continued concerning Diddy. “I believed in him. Bad Boy started in our basement in Scarsdale, NY. Thanks to the legendary Bert Padell. One night we were at the palladium and Puff was about to give Flex THE RECORD. I can still picture that moment. We were at the bar patiently waiting for the record to [play]. The crowd response was going to tell us everything we needed to know. Flava in your Ear played. Everyone went CRAZZZYYYYYY. Puff looked at me and said you see this shit Mees!! I just smiled. It’s Bad Boyyyyyyy. My Life Story. My experience. Beside every Bad Boy was a Bad gyal!

“**Please do not come here with any negativity, instead try praying for all involved,” Misa Hylton concluded her Diddy story. “You cannot erase history and cultural impact. This is also OUR legacy. Misa Hylton Shares Quote Amid Diddy’s Security Footage Scandal

At the time, she went on to claim that Diddy “needs help,” and said she was “praying that he truly does the personal work and receives it.” Now, she’s shared a meaningful quote that may pertain to her past experiences with Diddy on her IG Story. “When you finally learn that a person’s behavior has more to do with their own internal struggle than you, you learn grace,” the quote reads.

Misa Hylton Describes Video Of Diddy Assaulting Cassie As Triggering For Her “Own Trauma”

Misa Hylton has addressed the recent footage CNN published of Diddy appearing to assault Cassie at a hotel in 2016 by sharing a statement on Instagram. She did so by captioning a pair of pictures of Diddy’s children. She brought up her “own trauma” and described seeing the clip as triggering.

“I am heartbroken that Cassie must relive the horror of her abuse, and my heart goes out to her,” she said. “I know exactly how she feels, and through my empathy, it has triggered my own trauma. These young people were raised by women that want the best for them – we put God and education first and have always been united in our mutual effort to support their dreams. The ladies held a press preview for their new collection filled with sophistication and entertainment, as guests dressed in their finest Denim and Diamonds attire. From custom bedazzled denim hats to a gift bag of Simone I. Smith goodies, attendees were treated to an inspiring and uplifting evening. Delectable bites, including lobster rolls, crab cakes, and steak bites, paired with special cocktails, added to the ambiance of the event.

The Source Magazine, journalist Courtney Brown had the opportunity to chat with Simone I. Smith about her inspiration behind the collection and her passion for representing the community.

Courtney Brown (CB): When I looked at your site I instantly caught the inspiration. But when I saw the dolphin earrings, I was like, ‘yo, she was there.’

Simone I. Smith (SS) You know I was there. (laughs) I was there. I was there.

CB: What made you go that route to put hip-hop staples and include them within your line?

SS: Well, first of all, when I designed, so when me and Mary partnered, she’s one of my best friends, just like Misa, and we partnered up, we have a partnership and we have a business called Sister Love. And because Mary grew up in Yonkers, I grew up in Queens, we both grew up in the hip-hop era. And it was all about those big statement pieces. So I was like, we need to bring back all of the door knockers from back in the days. I don’t know how many of them we’ve launched now. I don’t know, maybe 20 pair, but we keep finding them. And then we just modernize them. They’re like sterling silver, 18 karat gold, but they’re high polished. You know, like back in the day, they were more kind of like a dull. It was like a dull gold.

image002

CB: I love the quality too.

SS: Yeah, but it’s because those earrings just never went out of style. I always had a pair of bamboo earrings, always had a pair of triangle earrings. And you know, when we just decided to do it, we were both two girls from New York that grew up in the hip-hop era. You know, and she’s the queen. She’s the queen of hip-hop R&B, I think is what Mary’s title is. And me, I’m the queen of hoops. So, you know, so, but Mary was my number one, so like her and Misa, when I launched sis, Mary and Misa, they always wore my earrings.

CB: Is she wearing them on the hit series Power?

SS: Absolutely. That’s all Sister Love on power. Right. And then, so then, we just, you know, it was our goal to just bring the big, bold, pay homage to the late 80s, the mid to late 80s, and just continue to do that because, you know, we want women to feel good and also to show that women can work together. Because so many women, women can be very catty, you know that.

CB: Yes, yes.

SS: But women can work together. So Mary and I have our partnership. Misa and I, we have our collaboration. Our first drop is Denim and Diamonds. That’s the one that we have named Denim and Diamonds. And then these are Simone.

CB: These are my favorite!

SS: These are Simone.. And the triangle ones that Misa has on, those are the Misas.

CB: And when I saw the Nefertiti pendant! I just asked my friend, ‘Why aren’t the men repping us anymore?’… Remember how the men used to wear the Nefertiti?

SS: They used to rock us.

CB: The men used to rock us.

SS: What’s my boy on Power? Neek! Neek is rocking the Nefertiti. We got to give him props for that.

CB: Yes, we got to give Neek props.

After exchanging a few dabs like the cool girls did back in the day—I was instantly connected to Mrs.Smith’s grace, kindness and charm.

With its blend of urban edge and timeless elegance, the SIS x MISA Denim and Diamonds collection is set to revolutionize contemporary jewelry, offering statement pieces that resonate with the spirit of the hip-hop era.

Stephen A. Smith Refutes Misa Hylton’s Claim That Authorities Used Excessive Force During Diddy Raid

Stephen A. Smith has been a sports journalist for many decades. Overall, he has some massive accolades and continues to be the face of ESPN. The show First Take turned him into a superstar, and now, he is using that stardom to pursue various other endeavors. For instance, he has his very own show where he will talk about anything. From sports to politics to dating, everything is fair game. Having said that, it should come as absolutely no surprise that Smith has been giving his take on the Diddy raid situation.

For instance, on the latest episode of his show, he discussed the recent accusations made by Misa Hylton, the mother of Diddy’s son Justin. Recently, she posted a video showcasing what went down at the home the day of the raid. Moreover, she noted that an attorney has been hired as they believe Homeland Security used excessive force with her son. In the clip below, Smith refuted those claims. In his eyes, Homeland Security did everything by the book during the investigation.

Stephen A. Weighs In

Smith’s point here is that there have been countless instances of police shooting unarmed black men and killing them in the process. However, Justin Combs was simply handcuffed and walked out of the home in what Smith describes as a “peaceful” manner. For Stephen A., this doesn’t come close to a case of police brutality or over-policing. Of course, that is a subjective view of the situation, and only one man’s opinion. Regardless of how the cops handled it, the whole thing was probably quite frightening for Justin Combs and his siblings.

Let us know what you think of Stephen A. and his take on this situation, in the comments section down below. Do you agree with him that the Feds did everything in an appropriate manner? Do you think this is a topic he is equipped for? Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news and updates from around the music world.
