The ladies held a press preview for their new collection filled with sophistication and entertainment, as guests dressed in their finest Denim and Diamonds attire. From custom bedazzled denim hats to a gift bag of Simone I. Smith goodies, attendees were treated to an inspiring and uplifting evening. Delectable bites, including lobster rolls, crab cakes, and steak bites, paired with special cocktails, added to the ambiance of the event.

The Source Magazine, journalist Courtney Brown had the opportunity to chat with Simone I. Smith about her inspiration behind the collection and her passion for representing the community.

Courtney Brown (CB): When I looked at your site I instantly caught the inspiration. But when I saw the dolphin earrings, I was like, ‘yo, she was there.’

Simone I. Smith (SS) You know I was there. (laughs) I was there. I was there.

CB: What made you go that route to put hip-hop staples and include them within your line?

SS: Well, first of all, when I designed, so when me and Mary partnered, she’s one of my best friends, just like Misa, and we partnered up, we have a partnership and we have a business called Sister Love. And because Mary grew up in Yonkers, I grew up in Queens, we both grew up in the hip-hop era. And it was all about those big statement pieces. So I was like, we need to bring back all of the door knockers from back in the days. I don’t know how many of them we’ve launched now. I don’t know, maybe 20 pair, but we keep finding them. And then we just modernize them. They’re like sterling silver, 18 karat gold, but they’re high polished. You know, like back in the day, they were more kind of like a dull. It was like a dull gold.

image002

CB: I love the quality too.

SS: Yeah, but it’s because those earrings just never went out of style. I always had a pair of bamboo earrings, always had a pair of triangle earrings. And you know, when we just decided to do it, we were both two girls from New York that grew up in the hip-hop era. You know, and she’s the queen. She’s the queen of hip-hop R&B, I think is what Mary’s title is. And me, I’m the queen of hoops. So, you know, so, but Mary was my number one, so like her and Misa, when I launched sis, Mary and Misa, they always wore my earrings.

CB: Is she wearing them on the hit series Power?

SS: Absolutely. That’s all Sister Love on power. Right. And then, so then, we just, you know, it was our goal to just bring the big, bold, pay homage to the late 80s, the mid to late 80s, and just continue to do that because, you know, we want women to feel good and also to show that women can work together. Because so many women, women can be very catty, you know that.

CB: Yes, yes.

SS: But women can work together. So Mary and I have our partnership. Misa and I, we have our collaboration. Our first drop is Denim and Diamonds. That’s the one that we have named Denim and Diamonds. And then these are Simone.

CB: These are my favorite!

SS: These are Simone.. And the triangle ones that Misa has on, those are the Misas.

CB: And when I saw the Nefertiti pendant! I just asked my friend, ‘Why aren’t the men repping us anymore?’… Remember how the men used to wear the Nefertiti?

SS: They used to rock us.

CB: The men used to rock us.

SS: What’s my boy on Power? Neek! Neek is rocking the Nefertiti. We got to give him props for that.

CB: Yes, we got to give Neek props.

After exchanging a few dabs like the cool girls did back in the day—I was instantly connected to Mrs.Smith’s grace, kindness and charm.

With its blend of urban edge and timeless elegance, the SIS x MISA Denim and Diamonds collection is set to revolutionize contemporary jewelry, offering statement pieces that resonate with the spirit of the hip-hop era.

Stephen A. Smith Refutes Misa Hylton’s Claim That Authorities Used Excessive Force During Diddy Raid

Stephen A. Smith has been a sports journalist for many decades. Overall, he has some massive accolades and continues to be the face of ESPN. The show First Take turned him into a superstar, and now, he is using that stardom to pursue various other endeavors. For instance, he has his very own show where he will talk about anything. From sports to politics to dating, everything is fair game. Having said that, it should come as absolutely no surprise that Smith has been giving his take on the Diddy raid situation.

For instance, on the latest episode of his show, he discussed the recent accusations made by Misa Hylton, the mother of Diddy’s son Justin. Recently, she posted a video showcasing what went down at the home the day of the raid. Moreover, she noted that an attorney has been hired as they believe Homeland Security used excessive force with her son. In the clip below, Smith refuted those claims. In his eyes, Homeland Security did everything by the book during the investigation.

Stephen A. Weighs In

Smith’s point here is that there have been countless instances of police shooting unarmed black men and killing them in the process. However, Justin Combs was simply handcuffed and walked out of the home in what Smith describes as a “peaceful” manner. For Stephen A., this doesn’t come close to a case of police brutality or over-policing. Of course, that is a subjective view of the situation, and only one man’s opinion. Regardless of how the cops handled it, the whole thing was probably quite frightening for Justin Combs and his siblings.

Let us know what you think of Stephen A. and his take on this situation, in the comments section down below. Do you agree with him that the Feds did everything in an appropriate manner? Do you think this is a topic he is equipped for? Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news and updates from around the music world. Diddy Shows Love For Misa Hylton Amid Feud Over Son’s DUI Arrest

On June 4, Diddy’s son Justin Combs was arrested in Los Angeles on a charge of driving under the influence. According to police, the smell of alcohol during a traffic stop led them to administer a variety of sobriety tests to Combs. Furthermore, after failing said tests, Combs was detained in county jail on a $5000 bond.

Consequently, Combs’ mother Misa Hylton took to Instagram to put Diddy on blast. “I’m not protecting no one anymore, just my son. The statement ‘a fish rots from the head down’ means that, in addition to being a major contributing factor in a family or organization’s success, leadership is also the root cause of its failure and demise. The Truth shall set you free. Act BAD BAD boy I used to want to be a BAD Girl I chose to be a QUEEN Tried and true. I’m not perfect but I am INTENTIONAL,” as well as, “I should have kept my child with me. Fuck UCLA too. Everybody can get it. How you go from one of the greatest to ever do it To making all your money off alcohol And suing the damn alcohol company. Sell something healthy that builds people up. I’m sick of it!!!! NOT MINES.”

On June 9, Diddy posted an ad for DeLeón Tequila on Instagram. “Fuck everybody,” the rapper begins. “You know? Sometimes you have to say ‘fuck everybody’. It’s alright. Fuck it Friday, let’s go.” According to several gossip pages, such as The Shade Room and The Neighborhood Talk, Hylton commented “YUP that’s how I feel everyday.” However, Hylton’s comment is not immediately seen on Diddy’s post at the time of writing, implying that she may have since deleted it. Additionally, according to the screenshots from TSR and TNT, Diddy then replied to the comment. “I love you queen. Stay in the light,” the rapper said.

Furthermore, this was Diddy’s first and only response to Hylton’s comments about their son’s DUI. However, as previously mentioned, the interaction appears to have been deleted since being screenshotted and reported elsewhere. This is a developing story and you’ll be sure to find any updates here on HotNewHipHop.

Who Is Misa Hylton? Mother Of Diddy’s Son Justin Combs

Misa Hylton has always existed in the background of hip-hop. Many of the iconic outfits of Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, and Lil Kim are direct products of Hylton. Misa Hylton was initially ushered into the creative space by Diddy. In addition, she’s played an instrumental role in redefining feminine appearance throughout the hip-hop industry. However, this isn’t to say that she didn’t earn her success the hard way. Garnering her first gig at 17 years old, she faced marginalization as a hip-hop stylist amongst her fellow fashion peers.

While still in high school, she was the girlfriend of star intern Diddy, or Sean Combs. The fashion icon recently faced controversy surrounding her and Diddy’s son’s recent arrest. Although the two are no longer in a relationship, police arrested and charged Justin, 29, with a DUI over the past weekend. Misa Hylton vented out her thoughts on the controversy in a since-deleted slew of Instagram stories aimed at Diddy. Regarding his parenting, she wrote, “This is where the buck stops” for her “after sitting around for years and acting like there isn’t anything wrong with you.”

In addition to Justin Combs, Misa Hylton also has two kids with ex-husband and music executive Jojo Brim. Madison Star Brim is following in the footsteps of Hylton in the fashion industry. After graduating from Howard University, the 23-year-old began her own fashion brand in the form of Madison Star Couture. Their son, Niko Brim is also pursuing a creative career. However, he’s opted to go the hip-hop path, seeing a moderate level of success with tracks such as “FEDS WATCHING” eclipsing a million streams on Spotify.

However, when it comes to her son Justin, Misa Hilton went after Diddy and his business ventures in the alcoholic beverage space. His Ciroc and DeLeon brands have been one of his primary sources of income over the past decade. Still, the mother of his 29-year-old son felt that this was a step backward in his illustrious career. Hylton wrote, “How do you go from one of the greatest to ever do it to making all your money off alcohol and suing the damn alcohol company. Sell something healthy that builds people up. I’m sick of it!!!!! NOT MINES.” Reps of Diddy haven’t yet responded to Hylton’s myriad of accusations and statements.

Hylton Has Re-Defined Fashion In The Hip-Hop World

The visual imagery accompanying the music has always been a huge aspect of success for an artist’s career, especially in hip-hop. The appearance behind the conceptual goal of the sound is crucial. Misa Hylton has helped bring that to the forefront throughout her multi-decade fashion and design career. More specifically, Hylton has played a hallmark role in popularizing female hip-hop and their iconic looks. However, her early focus on both men and women in R&B certainly shifted how the perception of these artists.

From styling Mary J Blige to Jodeci, the image behind the music has always been a huge aspect of a creative’s success. Expanding on her process of the styling of R&B quartet Jodeci, she told Billboard, “At that time, the look for R&B singers were hard bottom shoes and suits, but we had what was then considered a crazy idea: to put these singers in leather, combat boots, hoodies and baseball caps that were turned backward.” The transformation skyrocketed the image of Jodeci.

Hylton also faced droves of discrimination, specifically before she had garnered her respect in the hip-hop industry. She was a pioneer, dressing her female creatives in a manner that often went against the traditional look that record labels and creative directors were enforcing. From dressing Lil Kim in a wig and baggy clothes to the lavish look of Mary J Blige, she heard plenty of no’s during her early career. However, the lack of boundaries surrounding female outfits today can in part be attributed to Hylton. For her, it wasn’t just about commercially her artist in a traditional manner. The fashion mirrored her desire to create an image to complement the artists’ sound.

Hylton’s career remains as prevalent as ever in the fashion space She owns her own styling company in the form of Misa Hylton Fashion Academy (MHFA). She expanded on the program’s initiative with Billboard. She stated, “An exciting career as a ‘stylist’ is available these days, but no one is really preparing and passing down the knowledge and skill set needed to turn this opportunity into a reality.” In addition, the documentary The Remix: Hip Hop x Fashion captures Hylton’s influence in encouraging female creatives to express their femininity in the hip-hop space. A Global Creative Partner for luxury fashion brand MCM, she’s currently styling modern-day artists such as Megan Thee Stallion and Flo Milli.
