Welcome Back, Cardi: Why Starting With ‘Bongos’ Just Makes Sense

Cardi B is back. Of course, she also never left. Over the five years since she released her groundbreaking debut album, Invasion Of Privacy, the Bronx rapper has been a near-constant force in the hip-hop/pop landscape. Her collaborations become instant classics. Her unfiltered observations on current events are the most salient commentary we’re ever going to get. Even her feuds dominate headlines — whether real, imagined, or just plain silly.

But with the release of her new single “Bongos” with Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi promises that she’s finally kicking off the rollout for her long-awaited second studio album. So, it seems important to say: Welcome back, Cardi (and if you sing it to the tune of the Welcome Back, Kotter theme song, it just resonates even better). And “Bongos,” Cardi’s second high-profile collaboration with Meg, seems like the perfect way to start the ball rolling, if only because it also represents a second chance for both artists.

In 2020, “WAP” was everywhere. Kids loved it, even if they didn’t understand it. Conservatives hated it, seemingly because they couldn’t relate. Everyone sang it, even if they had to adjust the lyrics in a way Cardi herself wasn’t too fond of. And it entered the social lexicon the way Judd Apatow movie quotes dominated dorm room conversations throughout the mid-aughts. The song was every bit as ubiquitous as Cardi’s first breakout hit, “Bodak Yellow,” seemingly presaging the inevitable release of another world-shaking full-length LP.

Cardi, though, had other plans. Despite the success of “WAP” and its follow-up “Up,” the outspoken artist decided to instead focus on her family and building her empire with a succession of endorsement deals, acting roles, and other business moves. Where many artists would have struck while the iron was white hot hoping to maintain the momentum, Cardi showed that she was perfectly confident that her brand would withstand taking a couple of years off.

She was right, of course, but mostly due to her own hustle. She maintained her iron grip on the public’s attention by releasing a string of high-profile collaborations. Smartly, she mixed it up; there were guest features from Cardi on songs from mainstream hitmakers like Normani, Lizzo, and Summer Walker, as well as a run of remixes to fan-favorite street hits from GloRilla, FendiDa Rappa, and Latto. In the meantime, roles in films like Hustlers and Fast And Furious sequel F9 kept Cardi’s face in front of appreciative audiences’ eyeballs until she was ready to return on her own terms, shaking off the anxiety that came from achieving so highly on her first musical outing.

“Bongos” displays that reinforced confidence deftly, while also expanding Cardi’s toolbox in fun and interesting ways. Back in 2018, I wrote in my review of Invasion Of Privacy that I wished Cardi had included more songs like the boogaloo-sampling, reggaeton-featuring “I Like It,” because the song’s Latin flair both evoked Cardi’s Dominican roots, giving listeners a better sense of who she is, and stood out from anything else in hip-hop at the time. She also sounded like she was having the most fun on the record, which resonated outward to the listener.

Apparently, audiences at least somewhat agreed with me; the song became Cardi’s second No. 1 hit and appeared at No. 7 on Uproxx’s Critics Poll in 2019. It was the sort of smash most artists can only dream of having. As far as hits go, I hope “Bongos” has similar success to “Bodak Yellow,” “I Like It,” and “WAP,” because it’s the sort of hard left turn that Cardi’s been executing her whole career, but at a higher level of performance. Not only has her flow improved — where it was once a locomotive, it’s now like a bullet train — but she also raps in Spanish, displaying yet another facet of who she is without needing to tell us.

The song also functions as a bit of a pick-me-up for her friend Meg, who’s had a rough go of it over the past couple of years. She could also use a fresh start, and what better way than with a reunion with the peer who helped her net her own first No. 1 hit? The song is certainly a departure for Meg, who has dipped her toes into the pristine disco-pop of Dua Lipa and house renaissance (sorry, not sorry) of “Her,” as well as a K-pop swing with BTS’s “Butter” remix. But so few of those songs have connected the way “WAP” did. “Bongos” offers her another chance for an inescapable ubiquitous hit like earlier singles “Big Ole Freak” and “Savage.”

I don’t know if it has record-breaking, culture-shifting potential like Cardi’s past big hits, but it’s a perfect place to restart her solo career and remind folks that she’s more than a “features artist” or a one-hit wonder. It reveals just enough of a peek at Cardi’s growth to leave us hankering for more. With its repetitive sample, quirky beat, and catchy lyrics (“he look like a brokie” is the one), “Bongos” is also guaranteed to get stuck in more than a few cerebrums as Cardi prepares her next album. Cardi never went anywhere, but now, it looks like she might never go away.

Megan Thee Stallion Dubs Cardi B The ‘Only Girl’ Who Has Been ‘Consistent’ And Didn’t Stop Supporting Her When Things Were Tough

Things haven been up and down with Megan Thee Stallion over the past few years, with the downs thanks mostly to the Tory Lanez shooting. Through it all, though, Megan says there’s one person who has given her unwavering support: “Bongos” collaborator Cardi B.

During a 20-minute livestream in celebration of the “Bongos” video’s premiere last night (September 7), Megan noted, “This space that I’m in mentally, I’m not foolin’ with too many people that don’t give me good vibes, good energy. I have creative boundaries. And Cardi is somebody that I want in my space, in my energy, so it’s so easy to work with her because she got the vibe, she got the energy, I want her in my space.”

She continued, “She been nothing but real to me. The industry is so f*cked up, but this girl is probably the only girl who has been this consistent and this real and this… this just great of a person to me. So I just want to say, Cardi: I really love you so much and I really appreciate it. At a time you could have jumped ship, you never jumped the ship [laughs]! And you always been rocking with me and I’m just so appreciative.”

Cardi B And Megan Thee Stallion Twerk It Out In A Colorful Paradise In Their New ‘Bongos’ Video

Three years after leaving the world shook with their “WAP” collaboration, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion have teamed up for another collab. Their newest single, “Bongos” is a pounding dembow-influenced heater which will surely be in heavy rotation for the foreseeable future.

Cardi opens the song, letting us know right out the gate who’s in control. She commands the beat, instructing one of her beholders to “eat this ass like a plum.” She continues her raunchy verse, declaring, “p*ssy tight like a nun / Better chew it up like it’s gum / Then wipe your mouth when you done.”

Reminding us of their musical chemistry as a duo, Meg pops in, putting the clout chasers on notice, letting them know she can’t be bothered with the fakes.

“This ass sit like a stallion, all these wannabes my lil ponies / These hoes camped out in the comments, always talkin’ like they know me,” she raps

The accompanying music video sees Meg and Cardi on a colorful island wearing flashy outfits and twerking to their hearts’ content.

Fans Of Cardi B And Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘WAP’ Raunchiness Might Be Let Down By Their New Single ‘Bongos,’ Cardi Indicated

Cardi B may or may not be dropping her highly anticipated sophomore album soon, though she confirmed it will not be around her October 11 birthday and might not be in October at all because “I don’t want no sh*t related to work in October,” as she told DJ Whoo Kid this week.

Luckily, that doesn’t conflict with her plan to release “Bongos” with Megan Thee Stallion this Friday, September 8. It’s notable for many reasons, especially because it reunites them three years after their world-dominating “WAP” success. Everybody is excited, except for far-right conservatives.

“I wonder how people are gonna react to this vibe because they’re really, like, expecting ‘WAP,’” Cardi B told DJ Whoo Kid for an episode of his Whoo’s House podcast (as relayed by Billboard), which was public earlier Thursday (September 7) but has since been made private. “Like, ‘Oh, here they go again talking this and that.’”

She added, “We are talking a little, you know, about some p*ssy, but not like ‘WAP’-type of stuff.”

Cardi B promised that the accompanying “Bongos” video will be “beautiful” after she and Meg “worked so hard” and “put in our sweat and everything,” but again, she nixed any comparisons to “WAP”: “The [single] cover [art] gives off a ‘WAP’ vibe, but it’s not.”

On Thursday afternoon, Cardi B posted a video of her twerking on a couch, despite being “sleepy as f*ck,” across her socials.

“At six o’clock [EST], I will be premiering the trailer for ‘Bongos’ with me and Megan Thee Stallion,” she says. “And then, at like 11:30 p.m. [EST], I will be at YouTube. We gonna do a YouTube live to premiere ‘Bongos’! And I’m so excited. Meet me there, b*tch, because I’m f*cking tired, and we gonna be talkin’. We gonna get into some good stuff.”

Cardi had one more instruction in her Instagram caption: “Meet me THERE wit no pubic hairs !!!!!”

Cardi B Has A Release Date ‘In Mind’ For Her New Album, But A Title Is Still In The Works

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion will set the rap game on fire on Friday, September 8, when their single “Bongos” arrives — a very welcomed (and long-teased) reunion between the “WAP” collaborators.

That song by itself would be satisfying enough, but is it a sign that Cardi is finally initiating her album rollout?

The multi-Diamond-certified rapper visited DJ Whoo Kid and his Whoo’s House podcast this week, and she was asked about the status and title of what will be her first album since 2018’s Invasion Of Privacy.

“I’m keeping it under wraps,” she said. “I’m kind of still working, but I have a date in mind.”

Cardi B did disclose that her sophomore album will not drop around her birthday, which is October 11, adding, “Matter of fact, I don’t want nothing coming out in the month of October. October is my month. I don’t want no sh*t related to work in October.”

Previously, Cardi B covered the September 2023 issue of Vogue Mexico and gave insight into where the album stands.

“I’m not going to release any more collaborations,” Cardi B told the publication for the cover story published on August 25.

“I’m going to release my next solo single. Right now, I’m working on the cover art and ideas for the next record because it’s definitely coming up. Everyone always tells me I should put the record out now, they did when I released ‘WAP’ [with Megan Thee Stallion] and when I released ‘Up,’ but I always let them know I’m not going to wait long after all these singles. So stay tuned because it’s coming out very soon.”

Megan Thee Stallion Dances In Style, Excitedly Teases Cardi B Collab Single’s Release

Everyone’s anticipating the release of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s (semi) musical return with “BONGOS,” whether you’re excited for it or not. The track absolutely took over social media without even coming out yet, and ahead of its Friday (September 8) release date, many wonder how it’ll shape up. Are we getting another “WAP”-style hit from the femcees or something else entirely? After all, it’s been a while since Megan dropped new material, and it seems like she’s really looking forward to it. Moreover, she posted a video on Instagram of her dancing excitedly while doing her makeup and hair with the caption “Good Morninggg! BONGOS OUT AT MIDNIGHT.”

Of course, the Texas MC is just as excited as the Bronx spitter, who recently joked about making “BONGOS” scratch-and-sniff CDs. Not only that, but she was also left speechless when asked whether Beyoncé is going to be on her next album. Considering the chemistry that Megan The Stallion and her fellow Houston superstar shared on “S*vage,” there’s reason to believe a Cardi Bey collab would also be impressive. In just a couple of hours, we’ll see just how great this team-up turns out.

Megan Thee Stallion Dances As She Waits For “BONGOS”

However, that’s not all that the 28-year-old has to think about this week, although the other instance is a bit odd. Megan Thee Stallion recently received new platinum certifications for tracks like “Sweetest Pie” with Dua Lipa and “Cash S**t.” Also, Traumanize was certified gold by the RIAA over a year since its official release in August of 2022. While it’s definitely reason to celebrate, many felt that their label, 1501 Entertainment, shouldn’t be celebrating this as they did, as they took to Instagram to congratulate Meg.

For those unaware, the “NDA” artist is not in a good place with her label at the moment, stemming from contract issues and other allegations. As such, many fans rushed to her defense in the label’s comments section, saying that they didn’t do anything to contribute to these songs. Regardless, it seems like “BONGOS” might be another step in Megan’s career that will further distance her from negativity and further toward a resurgence. With that in mind, log back into HNHH for the latest news and updates on Megan Thee Stallion.
