Lizzo Presented the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at BMAC Gala: ‘I Needed This Right Now’

Lizzo

Lizzo was awarded the BMAC Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at the 2023 Black Music Action Coalition gala. The award comes while Lizzo faces multiple lawsuits for hostile work environments and harassment.

Earlier in the day, Lizzo was given a second lawsuit citing the star for sexual and racial harassment. The award was given to Lizzo by the cast of her reality show, Watch Out For the Big Grrrls.

“I needed this right now,” Lizzo said. “God’s timing is always on time! I’ve been blessed to receive a lot of incredible awards. But this one truly hits different because humanitarianism is selfless. And to be kind to someone isn’t a talent. Everyone can do it. It’s a gift that you give. In all my years of activism and outreach, I have witnessed at the core of every organization, every movement, every march is just people helping people.”

Lizzo is firing back at her accusers of hostile work environment and sexual harassment. Lizzo’s attorney, Marty Singer, spoke with TMZ and shared images of Lizzo’s accusers taking pictures with the singer and topless dancers at a European cabaret show. The image was from a show in Paris a month after the Amsterdam banana incident. Additionally, Lizzo plans to countersue her accusers.

Singer characterized the accusers in the image as “gleefully reveling” in the presence of the dancers. The accusers, Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez, state they were forced to attend the Paris event, citing the images as contradictory.

An audition featuring Davis after both incidents also has her singing Lizzo’s praises. “It’s been so amazing and such a beautiful journey,” Davis said. “I look up to her so much. I just want to follow in her footsteps, and I just want to share that with the Queen Lizzo herself.”

The lawyer for the women, Nema Rahmani, blasted the image from Paris.

“Of course, they wanted to keep their jobs. They had bills to pay just like everyone else but they finally had enough of the abuse,” Rahmani said. “We stand by every claim in the lawsuit and look forward to trial.”

Lizzo was spotted in the streets and gave an update, stating she was working on new tunes.

Several of pop diva Lizzo’s former dancers filed a complaint against her last month, alleging that they were subjected to hostile working conditions and sexual harassment. Fans questioned the veracity of the rumors after hearing explicit accounts of occurrences. Present-day dancers for Lizzo now provide their support. They wrote in a touching letter that was shared on Instagram:

“We have been so honored to share the stage with such amazing talent. The commitment to character and culture taking precedence over every movement and moment has been one of the Greatest lessons and Blessings that we could possibly ask for,” the post said.

“THANK YOU to Lizzo for shattering limitations and kicking in the door way for the Big Grrrl & Big Boiii Dancers to do what we love! You have created a platform where we have been able to parallel our Passion with a purpose!” it continued.

Ron Zambrano, the attorney representing the former dancers who filed the lawsuit, responded in a statement Friday saying it was “understandable that current employees would gush about her. They want to keep their jobs and maintain access to her global celebrity. But the comments change nothing about the allegations in the lawsuit.”

Since the lawsuit was filed on August 1, at least ten former Lizzo staffers have come forward with similar accounts of being abused and harassed by the musician, according to Zambrano.

“Some of them will certainly be actionable,” he said. “Lizzo’s job now is to try to do everything she can to limit the damage to her brand and save her career. Our job is to vigorously litigate this case on behalf of the plaintiffs based on the facts and we’re confident the truth will prevail over the spin.”

Lizzo Got Emotional Accepting A Humanitarian Award Amid Her Harassment Lawsuits: ‘I Needed This Right Now’

Things for Lizzo have been tough on the legal front over the past couple months: In August, she was sued for alleged harassment by some of her former dancers, and another similar lawsuit was also just filed against her. She put that aside for at least a night yesterday (September 21), when she accepted the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at the Black Music Action Coalition Gala.

Accepting the award, Lizzo teared up as she spoke (as Variety reports), saying, “Black Music Action Coalition, y’all really are about that action. Thank you so much for this, because I needed this right now. God’s timing is always on time! I didn’t write a speech because I don’t know what to say in times like these.”

From there, she described some of her humanitarian and activist efforts and continued, “It’s easy to do the right thing when everybody’s watching you, and it’s what you do in those moments when nobody’s watching that defines who you are. And I’m going to continue to be who I am, no matter who’s watching. I’m going to continue to shine a light on the people who are helping people, because they deserve it. I’m going to continue to amplify the voices of marginalized people because I have a microphone and I know how to use it. And, I’m going to continue to put on and represent safe spaces for fat Black women, because that’s what the f*ck I do!”

Lizzo’s Team Has Responded To Another Lawsuit, Deeming It ‘A Bogus, Absurd Publicity Stunt’

Another lawsuit has reportedly been filed against Lizzo. According to Rolling Stone, Asra Daniels, who worked for Lizzo during her 2023 Special 2our as a wardrobe designer, filed a lawsuit against Lizzo, her wardrobe manager Amanda Nomura, and her tour manager Carlina Gugliotta today (September 21) in a Los Angeles court.

The suit reportedly accuses Lizzo and her team of “racial and sexual harassment, disability discrimination, illegal retaliatory termination, and assault.”

According to Rolling Stone, Nomura is at the center of the lawsuit, and Daniels has accused Nomura of making “racist and fatphobic comments” toward Lizzo’s dancers.

The suit also alleges that “Nomura would also refer to Black women on the tour as ‘dumb,’ ‘useless,’ and ‘fat.’”

In the suit, it is also noted that “Nomura expressed that she would ‘kill a b*tch if it came down to it’ if anyone threatened her job. Lizzo’s management was well aware of this pattern of behavior. Carlina Gugliotta, Lizzo’s Tour Manager even requested Plaintiff to record Nomura without her knowledge, which Plaintiff did not do as it was both unethical and possibly unlawful.”

Elsewhere in the suit are details of Lizzo’s management “sharing graphic and disturbing images of male genitalia” in a 30-person group text, as well as an incident in which Daniels describes Nomura rolling “a heavy clothing rack over Daniels’ foot, causing serious pain, but Nomura merely ignored it and pushed Daniels into the rack, causing a more severe injury.”

Daniels was reportedly fired abruptly from the tour, and claims to have suffered mental and physical health issues as a result of her time working with Lizzo and her team.

The news arrives as Lizzo is preparing to receive the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award presented by the Black Music Action Coalition.

Ahead of the awards ceremony, Ron Zambrano, who is representing Daniels and three of Lizzo’s former dancers, issued a statement, saying:

“The timing of this award’s announcement stinks of an architected PR stunt by Lizzo’s team aimed at trying to repair the damage done to her brand. It won’t work. With Lizzo’s attack on the other plaintiffs, we’ve heard from more than two dozen former Lizzo employees sharing similar stories of abuse and harassment who could be potential new plaintiffs. This is not going away. Lizzo is the boss so the buck stops with her. She has created a sexualized and racially charged environment on her tours that her management staff sees as condoning such behavior, and so it continues unchecked. Lizzo certainly knows what’s going on but chooses not to put an end to this disgusting and illegal conduct and participates herself.”

Stefan Friedman, a representative for Lizzo, has issued a statement to Rolling Stone has issued a statement coming to the singer’s defense, saying:

“As Lizzo receives a Humanitarian Award tonight from the Black Music Action Coalition for the incredible charitable work she has done to lift up all people, an ambulance-chasing lawyer tries to sully this honor by recruiting someone to file a bogus, absurd publicity-stunt lawsuit who, wait for it, never actually met or even spoke with Lizzo. We will pay this as much attention as it deserves. None.”

Lizzo’s “Bongos” Are Front & Centre In Today’s Twerking Video

Only a few weeks ago it felt as though Lizzo’s career could be over forever thanks to a sexual harassment lawsuit from her former dancers. The “Truth Hurts” hitmaker briefly addressed the situation in an Instagram post and has since confirmed that she’ll be countersuing those coming after her. Rather than letting the allegations ruin the rest of her summer, Lizzo has been staying busy with her closest friends.

Last month we saw the Detroit native head overseas to Japan. She confidently showed off her style while sauntering through Shibuya, and since then, we also got to virtually spend Labour Day long weekend with Lizzo. Her IG feed has been lighting up with plenty of new photo dumps highlighting her most exciting adventures, not to mention the endless twerking she’s been doing. The Special hitmaker and her gal pals all had their booties shaking while in bikinis on a boat last weekend, and today (September 10), Lizzo couldn’t help but show off her moves while blasting “Bongos.”

Lizzo is Feeling Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s New Single

The catchy new single arrived via Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion on Friday (September 8), following their joint “WAP” effort. Not only did the accompanying music video beautifully capture the two rhymers while they threw it back in the tropics, but their bars and the beat have plenty of other music followers following suit while filming NSFW clips of their own. “My back 💥 sound like a bongoooooooo,” Lizzo wrote in the caption of her post. As expected, the comments are flooded with a mix of negative haters and loyal supporters, along with those demanding some seriousness from Lizzo amid the recent lawsuit.

Not everyone is feeling Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Bongos” track, but those who are clearly can’t get enough of it. Lizzo & Friends Tirelessly Twerk In Bikinis On A Boat

The accusations that came out against Lizzo earlier this summer were anything but flattering. Seeing as she’s dedicated much of her career to promoting body positivity and open sexual expression, fans were shocked to hear about the fat-shaming rumours – not to mention the NSFW harassment allegations from her former dancers. A group of Lizzo’s ex-employees have filed a lawsuit against her for her apparently inappropriate behaviour, though she’s since responded with a countersuit.

Some people would be too embarrassed or anxious to step outside amid so much drama. The “Truth Hurts” hitmaker seemed to initially lay low, though she eventually resurfaced and has frequently been seen with a smile on her face ever since. In August she flew overseas to Shibuya where Lizzo was sure to spread plenty of love. In honour of Labour Day long weekend, she’s spending some time in the sunshine with friends.

Lizzo is Living Her Best Life

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Lizzo event if there was no twerking involved. She and her gal pals have been doing plenty of booty shaking while enjoying their time spent on a boat. “THOOTIE THAH THAH 💥🍑,” she wrote in the caption.

Regardless of the fun-loving energy she’s clearly trying to put out into the world, the Detroit native is still being met with negativity in the comments. “I mean is this really what you want to put out there in the world while you waiting on a lawsuit?” one person asked. On the other hand, others are praising Lizzo for her continued dedication to promoting body positivity.

Lizzo Shows Off New Hairdo Amid Harrasment Suit

Despite facing a lawsuit from several former backup dancers, Lizzo remains unbothered. The 35-year-old singer recently took to Instagram to show off her latest look. The “Truth Hurts” hitmaker’s new hairdo consists of an exciting mix of two iconic styles: a bob and a mullet. Pairing the bold haircut with a bright blond color and hot pink tips, Lizzo draws inspiration from different eras to create this modern look.

“The bob is bobbing,” the Detroit native wrote in one of her posts. The photos seem to have been taken during the singer’s visit to Japan for her Special tour. Judging by her comment section, the new look seems to be a hit with fans. “[fire emoji] Love you lizzo. Haters Gona hate. Jealous comes out woodwork when u r successful. Also woke society need to grow a backbone. Chin up lady. X,” one person replied. Some even compared her look to TLC singer, T-Boz. “Giving me T-Boz vibes,” they wrote. “Japanese fashion is literally the best in the world. Love the hair [praise hand emoji] giving me anime vibes,” one person commented.

However, not everyone was so kind. Some folks think the singer needs to address the recent allegations from her former backup dancers. “Didn’t this individual force her staff to eat exotic fruits from each others genitals whilst body shaming them at the same time? Why is she posting like she isn’t the subject of multiple lawsuits and a criminal investigation?” someone wrote. Whereas another person added, “Now that we all know how you treat people your worth has gone down drastically. And I don’t mean money.”

Several of Lizzo’s former backup dancers filed a lawsuit against her earlier this month. The dancers accused her of creating a hostile work environment and engaging in sexual harassment and fat-shaming. They claim she forced them to engage in suggestive interactions with entertainers at an explicit performance in Amsterdam. This came as a shock to Lizzo’s fans, who regarded her as a strong voice for both body positivity and woman empowerment.

Lizzo’s Dancers Reportedly Received A Settlement After Appearing In Her Documentary Without Their Consent

Lizzo has been making headlines over the past few weeks about the alleged treatment of her dancers. Now, it appears it’s not the first time a situation has come up between them.

In 2022, Lizzo’s documentary, Love Lizzo, premiered on HBO Max. During one of the scenes, a group of dancers assist Lizzo in rehearsals for the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards and open up about their experiences in the field. However, according to the Los Angeles Times, the dancers later claimed that the footage appeared in the film without their consent or knowledge. Because of this, they also weren’t paid, and Lizzo was a producer on the project.

The publication notes that the dancers’ manager, Slay Smiles, sent an email to the Boardwalk Pictures’ attorney, Alan Brunswick, on January 17.

“After seeing all of the videos, I’m sure you realize how sensitive and private the dialogue was for the talent involved,” Smiles reportedly wrote. “This was supposed to be a safe space to express and share with the Principal talent [Lizzo], so by sharing this unauthorized footage to the public without their approval/permissions, has truly exploited these women and violated the emotional safety they had in those moments.”

The situation escalated when one of the dancers hired an attorney about the matter. Because of this, “Boardwalk Pictures, a Lizzo entity and other parties” signed a confidential settlement where the dancers were then paid and released their rights to appear in the documentary.

Lizzo’s lawyer, Martin Singer, also added that the issue was resolved by the production company and that she “had nothing to do with it and knew nothing about it.”
