Lil Nas X Gets Introspective On “Where Do We Go Now?”

Throughout Lil Nas X’s career, the songs that have helped him blow up are his blockbuster bangers. Go figure though right? But, one of the more underrated talents he possesses is the ability to write thought-provoking tracks. That is what he is bringing to the table this week with “Where Do We Go Now?” This is Nas X’s second single in two weeks. The reason why this one is out so quickly is that his documentary is dropping tomorrow.

This single will be able to be heard in Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero. The Georgia native is showing fans what it was like during the first world tour of his still-young journey in music. His film will be out on Max and HBO on January 27 at 8 p.m. Since we know that this is a song that accompanies this project, it will be interesting to see if his next tape will be a soundtrack.

Although, “J CHRIST” has some underlying meanings tied to Christianity and the Gospel. So, who knows at this point? But, what we can tell you is that Nas X hit it out of the park with this one. Debatably, this may be the better put-together track out of the two. While it may perform even worse than its predecessor, “Where Do We Go Now?” is minimal but effective. The quaint and singer/songwriter-like production paired with his lyrics about feeling lost with himself are a match made in heaven. Give it a try with the link above.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single “Where Do We Go Now?” by Lil Nas X? Is this going to be the best track from his upcoming record? Do you like when he gets more emotional, or when he delivers bangers? Which track is the stronger of the two and why? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. Suddenly, gravity’s just like me
Pullin’ me down every chance it gets
Holdin’ me bound to the way I is, oh
And therapy, there’s no need
It ain’t no good for me
Why would I wanna talk about the s*** I did?

Lil Nas X’s New Song Finds Himself Asking ‘Where Do We Go Now?’ After Taking The World By Storm

Lil Nas X has the world talking. His latest video, “J Christ” has been met with praise by fans, as well as controversy from Christian conservatives (as was expected). This weekend, the pop and hip-hop hitmaker is set to drop his documentary Long Live Montero, which will give fans a look at his rise to fame, coming out, and handling scrutiny from the public. Ahead of the documentary, Lil Nas X has shared a new song, “Where Do We Go Now?,” written just for the film.

On the song, which was produced by Omer Fedi and Blake Slatkin, Lil Nas X finds himself wondering what’s next. He’s had an impressive run as a gamechanger in the mainstream music landscape, however, seems to be grappling with the mixed emotions that come with fame.

“Where do we go now? / We’ve seen everything we had to see / We figured it out, my love / So where are we goin’? / So where do we go now? / We did everything so endlessly / And only to feel undone / So where are we goin’?,” he sings on the song’s chorus.

The song serves as a bridge between Lil Nas X’s debut Montero era, and the world he’s creating with his imminent second album.

You can listen to “Where Do We Go Now?” above.

Long Live Montero will be available for streaming on Max beginning 1/27.

Lil Nas X Reveals All The Details On New Single “Where Do We Go Now?”

Lil Nas X is a master of trolling. His ability to get people talking is uncanny and that was the case with “J CHRIST.” It is the lead single to the Georgia artist’s forthcoming sophomore record that has no release date or title yet. Months and months before the semi-gospel-inspired cut hit streaming services, it was receiving massive amounts of backlash. The main reason is because of Nas X’s comments online.

Many felt he was disrespectful toward the religion and the people who practice it. However, even though so much controversy was swirling around the release there was little doubt it would have a mediocre debut. But, that turned out to be case. Lil Nas X’s “J CHRIST” landed at number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It is still doing numbers regardless, though.

Maybe this time around for him will be different. Uproxx recently reported that Nas X announced a second single “Where Do We Go Now?” and it will drop this Friday, January 26. He captioned the IG post, “good news yall im dropping new music to match with your depression. 🤍🫡” There could be a secret plan behind dropping another one so soon. It could be a sign the album is dropping soon. Or, this has the potential to be somewhat of a response to all the people who were upset with him over “J CHRIST.” Especially with the caption, Nas X could be hinting at that and is trying to get under fans’ skin.

What are your thoughts on Lil Nas X announcing a new single, “Where Do We Go Now?” Will this be better than “J CHRIST,” why or why not? Is that track still in your rotation? Do you think he is dropping a new one so soon because of the negative backlash? Will this be one of the biggest albums of the year when he eventually drops it? We would like to hear what you have to say about all of this. With that in mind, be sure to leave all of your hottest takes in the comments section below. Lil Nas X is keeping fans fed. Earlier this month, the hitmaker and provocateur made an epic comeback with his buzzy single “J Christ” — the video of which depicts him being crucified and making an ascension into heaven. But it appears his next single will be a bit more personal.

Today (January 23), Lil Nas X announced his upcoming single, “Where Do We Go Now?”

The song is set to arrive this Friday (January 26), as Lil Nas X revealed on his social media accounts.

“im dropping new music to match with your depression,” he said in the post’s caption.

There’s not much context regarding the subject matter thus far, however, the song’s artwork sees a drawing of Lil Nas X standing in a lush, green field, and holding hands with what looks like a younger version of himself. So, it’s likely that the song will showcase Lil Nas X’s more introspective side.

If it’s anything like his Montero cuts “Dead Right Now” and “Sun Goes Down,” fans are certainly in for a ballad that will tug at the heartstrings.

“Where Do We Go Now?” arrives in tandem with Lil Nas X’s documentary, Long Live Montero, which is set to premiere on Saturday, January 27 on Max.

Lil Nas X Looks Back On The Triumphs And Challenges Of His Rise To Fame In A New ‘Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero’ Trailer

Last year, Lil Nas X made a splash at the Toronto International Film Festival with the premiere of a new documentary movie, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero. Soon, the film will be made available more widely, as its set to debut on HBO January 27 at 8 p.m. ET and start streaming via Max at the same time.

Today, a new two-minute trailer was shared, and it serves as an overarching summary of his journey so far, from early life to “Old Town Road,” from his sexuality to his fans and his haters.

A press release for the movie notes:

“The film […] follows Lil Nas X as he embarks on his first ever global tour. The diaristic film is a remarkably intimate portrait of an artist on tour navigating identity, family, expectations and acceptance, all while reflecting on his place within the legacy of Black, queer performers. Directed by Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero captures one of today’s most provocative pop stars at a transformational point in his life, both on and off stage. Shot over the course of 60 days with unparalleled access, the film follows Montero Hill, aka Lil Nas X, on an emotional odyssey through the creation and performance of the critically acclaimed Long Live Montero show.”

Hurricane Chris Blasts Lil Nas X for ‘Playing’ with Jesus: ‘We Slide Behind Jesus’

Another day, another rapper is mad at Lil Nas X about his “J CHRIST” single. This time, Louisiana rapper Hurricane Chris gives a strong message to Lil Nas X.

“Find you something else to play with besides Jesus,” Hurricane Chris said. “Don’t play with nobody religion. That’s some down bad ass shit.

He added, “You think just because you have your community behind you, that you can do anything at this point? You got this fucked up. We slide behind Jesus.”

Lil Nas X is responding to the backlash for his “J CHRIST” single. Hitting Instagram, Lil Nas X delivered a message claiming he “messed up really bad this time.”

“I can act unbothered all I want, but it’s definitely taken a mental toll on me,” Lil Nas X said. “I’m not some evil demon guy trying to destroy everybody’s values and stuff like that. That’s not me.”

He added, “When I did the artwork, I knew there would be some upset people simply because religion is a very sensitive topic for a lot of people. But I also didn’t mean to mock — this wasn’t a fuck you to the Christians. It was literally me saying I’m back like Jesus.”

Lil Nas X’s ‘J Christ’ Song And Video Are ‘Fantastic,’ According To A Church Of Satan Leader, So, There’s That

Last Friday, January 12, Lil Nas X sent seismic waves across the music and pop cultural landscapes by releasing “J Christ,” his first single in two years. Before it even arrived, “J Christ” upset some people because of Lil Nas X’s heavy usage of Christian imagery, going so far as to cosplay Jesus Christ’s crucifixion in the song’s cover art. He billed the song as “dedicated to the man who had the greatest comeback of all time.”

Uproxx’s Aaron Williams defended Lil Nas X against criticisms that he’s “mocking” Christianity, and unsurprisingly, Lil Nas X is receiving loud praise from Church Of Satan Magister David Harris.

TMZ relayed, “While certain Christian rappers and groups have expressed disgust with the song and video, the Church of Satan loves it … magister David Harris tells TMZ he’s giving the video a thumbs up, calling the imagery ‘fantastic.’”

So, there’s that.

Lil Nas X previously received unsolicited support from Harris in 2021 when his devil-themed “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” video, as per Rolling Stone at the time. “J Christ” is presumably the lead single for a forthcoming Lil Nas X album — among Uproxx’s “Most Anticipated Albums Of 2024” — which would be his first since his September 2021 debut LP, Montero.

Lil Nas X has support for his new video from the Church of Satan but receives no love from Gospel rapper Lecrae.

“okay I gotta admit Lil Nas is playing with fire mocking Jesus,” he wrote. “he’s getting the attention he wants from folks at the risk of searing his conscious. Still if God can transform King Neb, murders, slave masters, sex workers, etc. he can add another Blasphemer to the list.”

Co-written by Lil Nas X himself alongside Omer Fedi, Mike Levy (Gesaffelstein), and Blake Slatkin, the song showcases a blend of creativity with production by Fedi, Gesaffelstein, and Lil Nas X.

Accompanying the single is the release of the official video, which not only serves as Lil Nas X’s solo directorial debut but follows a story he crafted. The “J CHRIST” visual is a gleefully subversive journey, featuring Lil Nas X conquering both heaven’s gates and hell’s fires. The video was shot in Mexico City.

As he asserts his faith and sails through a flooded rapture, Lil Nas X proudly declares his chosen direction: “THIS WAY.” The artist is forging a new path, expressing his spirituality uniquely, and signaling a fresh beginning in his musical journey. DAY ZERO of this next chapter has arrived, showcasing Lil Nas X’s evolution and commitment to authenticity in his artistry.
