Today (August 9), after teasing their ultimate link up for over a week, the official video for the duo’s track “Fly” has landed. On the Andrew Watt and Cirkut co-produced track, the pair boast about their highly favored lives.
“I’m feelin’ the wave / I wanna fly / Let’s get geeked, let’s get drunk, let’s get high / Don’t go on a plane / I’m sittin’ the jet way / You already know which way we goin’ that way / Told her I wanna get you paid / Oh, you like that? Okay, bounce right back, go rage,” raps Quavo.
But, in the official video, Quavo and Lenny Kravitz take things to a heightened rock star level. With head banging, quick cuts to Kravitz’s guitar work, and a wardrobe comprised solely of black leather, what more could you ask for?
Let’s be real, sample fatigue is real. However, Quavo’s incorporation of Lenny Kravitz’s smash 1998 song “Fly Away” defies fans’ complaints. Last year, Quavo released his sophomore solo studio album, Rocket Power. But could “Fly” signal that another project rollout is on the way?

However, we can say that today, as the trap rap mainstay and rock and roll legend’s collaboration is available everywhere. The former Migos leader previewed this song about a week ago or so to some pretty negative reactions. Overall, he seems to be in new creative rhythm as of late, with his country/pop rap crossover “Tough” with Lana Del Rey being the kick starter. That track has been blowing up since its release in early July, raking in over 84 million streams.
Overall, we feel that “Tough” is deserving of its popularity thanks to its solid execution and quality performances from Quavo and Lana. However, we can see why the initial reactions to “FLY” were what they were. Some called it a piece of “high school music” and that’s a pretty accurate description. This feels like a blatant cover of Lenny Kravitz’s radio hit “Fly Away” in the worse way possible. It comes across a cash grab thanks to including the rocker’s OG chorus with some trap production slapped onto it. There is a plethora of rap/rock crossovers that we would recommend over “FLY”, sadly. He revealed on an episode of the WTF With Marc Maron podcast, “I had an incredibly spiritual experience. I did a bunch of spiritual practices every day, I created new rituals for myself. I was celibate for six months, and fasting a lot because me and Adam [Driver] had to lose a bunch of weight anyway.”

Justin Bieber, prior to his marriage to Hailey Bieber, engaged in a period of abstinence as a means of rededicating himself to his spiritual beliefs. “[God] doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff,” Bieber explained to Vogue. “He’s like, ‘I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain.’ I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth.”

On the other hand, model and media personality Amber Rose has been outspoken about embracing long-term celibacy out of disillusionment with modern dating. In a candid interview on the Sofia with an F podcast, she declared, “I don’t want to share my house or my life with anyone. I don’t want anyone around my kids. I don’t want to have sex. It’s so gross. I don’t want it.”

Rapper Nicki Minaj has also been open about periods of celibacy in her life. In 2017, she revealed she had taken a break from sex and dating, encouraging her fans to do the same. “I’m just chillin’ right now,” she said. “I’m celibate. Mariah Carey is another celebrity who has spoken about the positive effects of abstinence. Prior to her 2008 marriage to Nick Cannon, Carey practiced celibacy, explaining, “It’s not that we had NO intimacy, we just didn’t have complete intimacy…I just thought that it would be so much more special if we waited until after we were married.”
“I definitely don’t want to push it on anybody else,” she added. “But we both have similar beliefs, and I just thought that it would be so much more special if we waited until after we were married. And it was, and it still is.”
Ice-T and Lenny Kravitz aren’t usually two celebrities mentioned in the same sentence. They might have a few things in common, like posting the occasional thirst trap photo, but they usually do their own thing like any other normal human beings do. Well actually, the Body Count frontman did comment on a Kravitz-related subject this week after the latter pulled a bit of a Julia Fox.
Let’s back up for some context. Fox recently revealed that she has been celibate for years (ever since… you know), but she hasn’t gone nearly as far with with abstaining as Kravitz, who let the world know that it’s been nine years since he’s done the deed, and he won’t do so again until he’s in a serious relationship. And you know what? He knows what he doesn’t want.
Ice-T, however, had some thoughts on the issue and didn’t hold back. His unfiltered ways are frequently something to witness, but he seems to feel quite strongly about Kravitz’s revelation, as he wrote on Twitter/X: “9yrs without Sex? F that BS. Weirdo sh*t.”
By now, you have probably seen that tweet if you’ve been on the Internet in the past 24 hours. However, something strange has happened: the tweet no longer exists. As Page Six noticed, Ice-T has deleted that statement, so what gives? He usually doesn’t shy away from backlash, and he continued engaging on the subject in tweets that do still exist.

Perhaps Ice had second thoughts on referring too directly to Kravitz. And perhaps the Law & Order: SVU star who jokingly claimed to have started an earthquake with his bedroom moves thought twice due to Lenny never asking for other celebrities to weigh in on the subject. Still, Kravitz did make a personal subject into a public discussion, so there was bound to be some messy commentary in the aftermath. Whatever the case, Ice has not elaborated on why he deleted the tweet, but that sure makes for an unusual day in an overall surreal news week.

During his interview with Esquire, Kravitz lamented, “To this day, I have not been invited to a BET thing or a Source Awards thing. And it’s like, here is a Black artist who has reintroduced many Black art forms, who has broken down barriers — just like those that came before me broke down. That is positive. And they don’t have anything to say about it?”
As Lenny points out, as one of the very few Black artists making rock music over the past three decades — y’know, the genre that Black folks invented — it does seem that he feels like those awards shows have overlooked his contributions, inadvertently reaffirming the stereotypes that allowed rock to be appropriated in the first place (of course, he might be a little out-of-touch himself, as the Source Awards haven’t been held in nearly 20 years).
So it turns out, Kravitz didn’t really have much to say about “Black media” so much as specific awards show producers who’ve left him out of the conversation. Of course, when quotes get picked up by other publications, they can be reframed in ways that can change the tenor and even the substance of the quotes, which is why it’s always important to read beyond the headlines.
