Spotify’s Best New Artist Event Showcased The 2023 Grammy Nominees’ Diverse Talent

It’s no secret that the Recording Academy has faced a diversity problem for many years. This time around, they’ve made some intentional inclusive strides. This year, they invited about “2,000 diverse music creators and professionals” into the voting process — according to CEO Harvey Mason Jr. — nearly half of whom are under the age of 40. Another key change the Recording Academy has made to the Grammys is expanding their major categories to include ten nominees. That’s double the number of nominees they had four years ago, allowing musicians of many different genres to earn much-deserved recognition.

That means there are ten artists up for the coveted Best New Artist trophy in 2023, and Spotify’s Best New Artist showcase placed the category’s diversity on full display. The event brought all ten artists to the stage — Anitta, Omar Apollo, Domi & JD Beck, Muni Long, Samara Joy, Latto, Måneskin, Tobe Nwigwe, Molly Tuttle, and Wet Leg — at Los Angeles’ Pacific Design Center on Thursday, February 2nd. Each musician was able to give the audience a taste of their talent, and each performance was wildly different from the last.

The night kicked off with an intimate set from Domi & DJ Beck. The young duo, who are 22 and 19 respectively, juxtaposed their smooth, jazz-leaning sound with their brightly colored personal style. Samara Joy kept the loungey jazz going by showing off her entrancing vocals and putting her own unique spin on a cover of Adele’s “Someone Like You.” Americana folk rocker Molly Tuttle wow’d with her hit track “Crooked Trees,” joined by an adept banjo player and an upright bass guitarist. Tobe Nwigwe and his entourage made clever use of the stage by dressing in matching mint green outfits and enticing the crowd to harmonize before Omar Apollo similarly led a tender sing-along to his soulful number “Evergreen.”

When it came time for overseas rock, Måneskin and indie rock favorites Wet Leg did not disappoint. Italian Eurovision Song Contest winners Måneskin exuded the cool factor, making the audience forget they were in a small venue and not witnessing a stadium tour. Wet Leg closed out the night in a similar fashion, hyping up the crowd with a rendition of “Chaise Longe” that inspired a small-but-mighty mosh pit.

Spotify’s event also allowed attendees to see how a handful of the Best New Artist nominees aren’t just musicians, they’re seasoned performers. Anitta, Muni Long, and Latto made use of the entire stage with a crew of talented backup dancers. Long, a Def Jam signee whose track “Hrs & Hrs” had viral stint on TikTok, brought four male dancers to the stage to deliver moves reminiscent of the ’90s boyband era. Anitta also brought the energy. Though the Brazilian pop star is used to gracing massive festival stages across the world, she still managed to deliver a show-stopping performance to the (relatively) small crowd with tracks like “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Envolver.”

From rap and Latin pop to bluegrass, jazz, and stadium rock, the 2023 Best New Artist category is nothing if not varied in sound. And no matter who ends up taking home the category’s trophy on Sunday, Spotify’s Best New Artist party made one thing clear: The Recording Academy is making an effort celebrate music from all genres equally.

She seemed to get annoyed when social media users said she was getting the “bare minimum” from an unavailable man.

“What’s bare minimum?” she replied.

“The Lamborghini he bought? The pink corvette? The pink Richard Mill? 1 of my 20 birkins? Aint nun bare minimum bout my love life babe. Not to mention I GET THE D**K TO MYSELF [sic].”

Latto And Anitta Dominated At Spotify’s Best New Artist Grammy Party With Memorable Performances

The biggest event in music, the 2023 Grammy Awards, is just days away. But, before host Trevor Noah takes the main stage on February 5, leading up to the ceremony across the city of Los Angeles, this year’s nominees will be celebrated at smaller Grammy Week events. So, as music heavyweights and fans patiently wait to see if Beyoncé breaks another Recording Academy record at this year’s event, first-time nominees are excited to be welcomed into the fold.

For the first time since 2020, streaming giant Spotify hosted its annual event yesterday (February 2) at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood to highlight the musicians nominated in this year’s Best New Artist category. According to USA Today, during the over four-hour event, all 10 of the musicians (Anitta, Domi & JD Beck, Latto, Måneskin, Molly Tuttle, Muni Long, Omar Apollo, Samara Joy, Tobe Nwigwe, and Wet Leg) competing in the category performed.

While the event was not broadcasted, attendees shared clips of some of the performances across social media. Several fan pages uploaded Latto’s performance. Two songs featured in Latto’s set included “Big Energy (Remix),” which is nominated for best melodic rap performance as well as “It’s Givin’.”

Latin music star Anitta won the crowd with her signature seductive high-energy performance. Anitta performed her songs “Bola Rebola” and “Envolver.”

Fans also shared clips of Måneskin’s performance of their single ‘Beggin’.’

The 65th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 5, 2023. The ceremony will be broadcasted live on the CBS Television Network and streamed live and on-demand on Paramount+. Find the complete list of 2023 nominees here.

Latto Suggests Her Man Pays All Her Bills

She has yet to share her mystery man with the world, but Latto has spoken about him enough. Sure, there have been plenty of rumors about the identity of the 777 rapper’s beau. When she first shared she was in a new relationship, the internet was buzzing about who it could be. People speculated from one platform to another, but eventually, the gossip-mongers settled on 21 Savage.

Now, it should be noted that 21 has denied having a celebrity girlfriend. However, that hasn’t stopped people from adding his name to this conversation. Things recently reignited once again after Latto visited Hot 107.9 and discussed how her mystery man takes care of all her finances.

“I got the ‘Vette, I got the Lambs, I go the Birkins,” the rapper told the radio hosts. “I don’t pay no bills. If he comin’ like that, then, yeah.” The host was surprised that Latto didn’t come out of her purse at all. “I don’t pay no bills!” she repeated.

Although she won’t confirm who her beau may be, last summer, Latto did take to Twitter to speak about her romance. After someone asked if she missed her man, she admitted, “Girl I be dead crying when I have to leave lol we got separation anxiety reallll bad.”

“[One] thing about it my man gone put me on a jet after my show to get me back home to him faster 🥰🥰🥰,” she added. Further, she questioned whether she wanted a wedding or a baby first. We’ll keep you posted if there are any baby bumps or wedding bells, but for now, watch Latto on Hot 107.9 below.

Latto’s Manager Jokes About Selling Her Panties On Tour

They tried to troll her over her underwear, but Latto almost turned it into a profitable venture. The internet doesn’t let entertainers breathe easy when it comes to posting to social media. Latto knows all too well about being the target of trolls who attempt to turn an innocent post into a viral moment. After someone recently tried to clown her for wearing the same pair of leopard print panties twice, the rapper decided to clap back.

“Oh no, it’s the panty police,” she tweeted. Later, Latto decided to auction off her panties on eBay. “Latto’s everyday cheetah print panties. Used. As seen on Latto multiple times,” the listing stated. The auction kicked off at 99 cents, and bids increased to almost $100K before the platform shut things down. According to eBay, the listing violated their hygiene policy.

However, the idea itself wasn’t lost on Latto’s manager, Cortez Bryant. A paparazzo caught up with Bryant as he made his way through an airport. Of course, they couldn’t help but ask him about Latto’s interrupted yet lucrative idea of selling her underwear. It’s something that Bryant laughed about considering for tour.

“Ay man, we got a song coming out called ‘Lottery,’ man,” said Bryant. “So, you hit the jackpot with something like that. I didn’t expect it to go to $95,000. We might have to put that, sell that as a piece of merchandise or something.”

Bryant doubled down that if people are so concerned about what the 777 hitmaker is wearing, then they can buy it for themselves as merchandise. “Panties at shows! First time ever in history of merchandise, ever,” he said. The manager did, however, make sure to say that this idea came from the cameraperson, not him.

It was noted that Latto made the listing for fun, and the intention wasn’t to actually make any money. According to Bryant, they never expected the eBay listing to blow up the way it did, and they were just as surprised by the feedback as the public was. Yet, you never know what kind of business opportunity lurks around the corner when someone offers to spend nearly $100K on your used underwear.

Latto Goes Full Pop In New Song Preview

Latto isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The ATL rapper propelled to the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Big Energy.” It gained further steam when Mariah Carey hopped on the remix. However, it seems like she’s aiming for a #1 hit next.

The rapper took to Instagram this week where she shared a snippet of new music. Latto, along with two friends, throw dollar bills in the studio while the disco-pop single blared through the speakers. Throughout the video, Latto’s filming with a camcorder, which will likely land in the official music video for the song. “Pop Latto loading…,” she captioned the post.

A lot of her fans praised the direction she went in during the snippet. Others felt as if it was an unoriginal attempt at a radio record. Some people compared the single to Doja Cat’s “Say So” and Saweetie’s “Closer” ft. H.E.R.

Latto’s unveiled a few singles in recent times but none of them are particularly indicative of how her next project will sound. In early December, she linked up with GloRilla and the late Gangsta Boo for “FTCU,” a muddy Memphis banger that samples Three 6 Mafia. Then, she closed out the year with “Another Nasty Song.” Just last week, she released a new freestyle over SZA’s “Smoking On My Ex Pack.”

Besides revving up for a new single, Latto made headlines this week after selling a pair of her panties online. eBay later removed the listing because it violated their health and hygiene policies.

She hasn’t set a release date for her new single but it seems like it could arrive sometime this week. Check the snippet below.

Latto Violated Health & Hygiene Policies With Used Panties Listing, eBay Says

Latto nearly made $100K in a matter of hours before eBay discovered she violated health and hygiene policies.

After a troll commented on her choice of underwear, she clapped back by putting the panties for sale. In a matter of hours, the bids leaped to $95,650. However, before Latto could cash out on the opportunity, eBay removed the listing from its website.

According to TMZ, eBay took down Latto’s panties from the auction block due to health violations. Despite the clear demand on the market, eBay explained they aren’t in the business of selling used undergarments. They explained Latto’s listing breached their “used clothing” policy.

eBay explained they discovered the violation through AI technology, as well as health investigators. This is a common practice that allows them to uphold a high standard for used clothing.

The entire debacle began when the “Big Energy” rapper shared photos of herself, prompting someone on Twitter to point out that she’s apparently worn the same underwear in a previous photo. After ensuring fans that she has a stash of clean underwear on deck, she put the listing up for under a dollar.

Latto has yet to respond to eBay’s decision to pull her listing. However, it was a solid marketing plan ahead of her next single. Shortly after eBay pulled her panties from their platform, she took to Instagram to tease a brand new single.

Latto’s Leopard Panties Were Removed From Ebay After The Auction Reached Close To $100K

Ever since social media has given fans more access to their favorite stars than ever, the dark side of fandom has been counterbalanced by a silver lining — artists can clap back, often in clever, hilarious, and sometimes downright profitable ways.

After a troll online called out Latto for allegedly wearing the same pair of leopard-print panties two days twice in a row, the Atlanta rapper’s response not only put the peanut gallery in its place, it also nearly netted her $100,000 when she put the underwear in question up for auction on eBay (after providing photographic evidence that like Albert Einstein, she has a drawer full of identical pairs from Target).

Unfortunately for Latto, eBay pulled the listing for violating its “used clothing policy” according to TMZ. According to the policy: “Used underwear and socks are not allowed, even if they are clean.” I guess if Latto’s really serious about profiting from her pantaloons, she’ll have to try one of the (many, many) other platforms where such things aren’t just allowed, but encouraged (seriously, there are so many).

Look, fam, no kink-shaming here… but where are y’all getting the money for this? In this economy!?

Anyway, Latto likely doesn’t need the extra income. She’ll be honored as one of Billboard‘s Women In Music in March, which will undoubtedly lead to more lucrative opportunities. She was also Billboard‘s top new artist in 2022, thanks in large part to her hit “Big Energy,” which peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100 and stuck around for 51 weeks.

Latto Connects With bLAck pARty To Remix “BOMB” New Joint Single

The past few months have seen Latto more booked and busy than ever before. Aside from getting hate for wearing the same pair of underwear twice (and subsequently listing them for sale on eBay as a joke), the 777 artist has been in her musical bag as of late too.

Near the end of December, she officially dropped a previously leaked title, “Another Nasty Song.” Before that, she joined GloRilla and the late Gangsta Boo on “FTCU” and blew audiences away alongside Chloe Bailey with “For the Night.” Today (January 31), she’s appearing on her first single of 2023 – bLAck pARty’s “BOMB” remix.

The song originally appeared on the 31-year-old’s Hummingbird album last August. It came complete with a feature from Kari Faux. Clearly, though, BP was in the mood to switch things up in the new year.

“Y’all can have the summer / Top-down in the winter with it / Might cop a crib with a pool in it / Just to have your favourite model skinny-dipping,” bLAck pARty rhymes early on.

Later in the song, Latto takes over with her braggadocious flow, riding the beat like a master.

Other popular songs to come from the Arkansas native’s last project are “Hotline” and “I Love You More Than You Know.” The latter boasts an appearance from Childish Gambino. Additionally, he worked with names like Saba, Jean Deaux, and Gwen Bunn on various other titles.
