The Oscars slap is once again the topic of conversation, a year after it happened. This time, the moment is thrust back into headlines after Chris Rock’s Selective Outrage Netflix special.
During the closing moments of the special, Rock spoke about the slap, stating Jada Pinkett Smith was the reason for all of the problems in Will Smith’s life, citing the entanglement issues, a 2016 issue between her and Rock over that year’s Oscars, and more.
In an update to PEOPLE, a source close to Pinkett Smith stated she had no hand in the tension between Rock and her husband.
“Jada has had no part in all of this other than being heckled,” the source said. “Chris is obsessed with her and that’s been going on for almost 30 years.”
The source added, “Look where he chose to film his Netflix special. Her hometown. Obsessed.”
“Back in 2016 she helped start a movement with the Academy Awards by questioning why there are so few Black members, and Chris took it to this?” the source adds.
The 2016 mention is where Rock states Pinkett Smith suggested he quit his hosting position due to Will Smith’s Concussion snub. The source also shoots down that thought.
“She never asked Chris to not host the Oscars ever. She publicly said in a Facebook post at the time Chris would be a great Oscars host and is perfect for the job.”
The special is currently streaming in full on Netflix.
August Alsina reportedly found Chris Rock’s jokes about Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s relationship “funny,” according to the New York Post. The outlet quotes a source close to the singer. Rock joked about Smith, Jada, and Alsina’s infamous “entanglement” during his latest special for Netflix, Selective Outrage.
“Will Smith practices selective outrage,” Rock began during the segment. “Everybody that really knows, knows I had nothing to do with that shit. I didn’t have any entanglements. We all been cheated on. Everybody in this industry has been cheated on. None of us have ever been interviewed by the person that cheated on us on television. None of us. Why the fuck would you do that shit? She hurt him way more than he hurt me, okay?”
August Alsina & Jada Pinkett Smith
“August watched the Netflix special and he laughed,” a source told The Post. “He thought it was not only funny but truthful. That was the best part for him. A lot of people spoke out against [Alsina]. So he was happy to see that Chris Rock seemed to be advocating for the truth and not just making a joke.” Alsina first claimed he was granted permission from Will Smith for the relationship back in 2020, but Jada and Will denied this. Jada later admitted to being in an “entanglement” with Alsina during an episode of her Red Table Talk show. She even brought Will Smith on to address the scandal.
The source for The Post says that Jada still downplayed the significance of their relationship. “[Pinkett Smith] definitely downplayed a four-year relationship. It was not an entanglement. And that’s what made it so unfortunate. [Alsina] did not drag them in any interviews. It was not a scandal. It was just [Alsina] telling his truth and getting his life back. He was actually getting sick from [the stress of the romance]. Physically sick.” Elsewhere in Rock’s special, he joked about getting his daughter kicked out of school, Meghan Markle, and more.
The one-year anniversary of “Slapgate” is quickly approaching, and Chris Rock is finally speaking out about the incident. In his new Netflix comedy special, the South Carolina native doesn’t hold back while recalling last year’s Oscar Awards, where he was promptly slapped across the face by Will Smith after making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head. The Gemini Man actor faced severe consequences as a result of his violent outburst, though he seems to be making his way back into the public’s good graces as of late.
Rock, however, is receiving mixed reviews for some of the comments made during his new stand-up show. His rant about Meghan Markle calling the Royal Family “racist” has earned the 57-year-old backlash for “punching down on Black women,” not to mention the things he had to say about Pinkett Smith and her husband. “Years ago, his wife said I should quit the Oscars. I shouldn’t host ’cause her man didn’t get nominated for Concussion. And then he gives me a f*cking concussion,” he joked at one point.
Chris Rock’s Comedy Special Addresses “The Slap”
Elsewhere in the lengthy Netflix project, Rock claims that Pinkett Smith is actually to blame for starting their beef. “I did some jokes about her. Who gives a f*ck? That’s how it is: She starts it, I finish it,” he told the crowd in Baltimore. “That’s what the f*ck happened. Nobody’s pickin’ on this bitch. She started this shit. Nobody was pickin’ on her.” While the father of two had the opportunity to tell his side of the story, insiders have dished to PEOPLE about what the Red Table Talk host is thinking.
“She never asked Chris to not host the Oscars ever. She publicly said in a Facebook post at the time Chris would be a great Oscars host and is perfect for the job,” they explained to the outlet. Additionally, sources expressed shock at how many times Rock described Pinkett Smith using the word “bitch.” Rather than playing into the drama online, however, the mother of two is “focused on her book that will come out this year.”
Comedian is “Obsessed” with Jada Pinkett Smith, Sources Say
Apparently, Chris Rock’s targeting of Pinkett Smith is nothing new. “[He] is obsessed with her and that’s been going on for almost 30 years,” insiders claim. “Look where he chose to film his Netflix special. Her hometown. Obsessed. Jada has had no part in this other than being heckled.” They also add that “Back in 2016, she helped start a movement with the Academy Awards by questioning why there are so few Black members, and Chris took it to this?” Read what Twitter has been saying about the new comedy special here, and check back later for more pop culture news updates.
The 2022 Oscars stirred up buzz after the Will Smith and Chris Rock scandal. The controversial face slap was publicly circulated, which drew a lot of attention to Jada Pinkett Smith. Suffering from alopecia, an auto-immune disorder that attacks hair follicles, Pinkett-Smith has lost her locks over recent years. But even though she’s constantly in the eyes of the camera, the 51-year-old actress isn’t letting superficial appearances stop her from sharing her beauty with the world.
In an interview with The Guardian, Pinkett Smith shares “I learned a lot about detachment. And I learned a deeper beauty within myself, being able to let my hair go.” She reflects further on her diagnosis calling it “a great teacher. It’s been a hard one, a scary one – because specifically as Black women, we identify so much of ourselves with our hair. And it was scary. I had to really dig deep and see the beauty of myself beyond my aesthetics.”
Jada Pinkett Smith On African Queens: Njinga
The Red Table Talk host certainly hasn’t let Alopecia take over her confidence and continues to empower herself and other women through her work. Her upcoming new documentary series African Queens: Njinga releases this month on Netflix. As the executive producer and narrator, Pinkett Smith explores the life of Queen Njinga of Angola. This series includes interviews with experts alongside historical reenactments and plans to showcase the lives of the most iconic female rulers in Africa. The multi-talented actress is also signed on for a memoir, which will publish this fall.
In light of the upcoming release of African Queens, the mother of two reflects on the power of black women. “In most Black families, the women are the glue. They’re the matriarchs, the weavers of love, the leaders of spiritual knowledge within our homes.” She also recounts the difficulties she has had as a black woman in the entertainment industry, but thanks her grandmother for her success. Pinkett Smith’s grandmother, who primarily raised her, had taught her from a young age to rise above, no matter what challenge may present itself. Despite all of the difficulties Pinkett Smith has faced, there’s no doubt that she has followed her grandmother’s teachings. Be sure to catch African Queens: Njinga airing on February 15th, 2022 on Netflix!

While hip-hop lovers have often speculated that Tupac and Jada Pinkett Smith may have been each other’s “the one that got away” prior to the rapper’s untimely death, a resurfaced interview from 2015 finds the Girls Trip actress explaining to Howard Stern just how wrong those theories are.
Many have wondered how the mother of two avoided the temptation right in front of her in the form of one of her closest friends, and the host didn’t hesitate to press her by asking, “How were you not attracted to Tupac?”
“I met Tupac at the Baltimore School of the Arts. We went to High School together,” Pinkett Smith recalled, also noting that, while the West Coast artist was undeniably charismatic, he was also poor, and allegedly only owned two pairs of pants and two sweaters when she met him.
As Stern inquired about if ‘Pac was as “gangsta as we all thought he was,” the 51-year-old confirmed the gossip. “He was a revolutionary without a revolution. That kind of energy just transferred into a whole other thing,” she explained.
When the host asked if Pinkett Smith thought the “All Eyez On Me” hitmaker was in love with her due to the beautiful poetry he penned in her honour, she said, “It is so funny. Now being older, I have more of an understanding of what that was between us.”
“When you have two young people who have very strong feelings but there is no physical chemistry… between us at all. And it wasn’t even just for me. It was him too.”
The Red Table Talk host shared that there was once a time when she asked Tupac to kiss her, just to see what would happen. “When I tell you it had to be the most disgusting thing, kiss for us both,” she admitted.
While Stern suggests the lack of sexual chemistry was due to the “platonic” nature of their relationship, Pinkett Smith offered a more philosophical explanation.
“The only way I can put it is the ‘Higher Power’ just did not want that,” the Baltimore native suggested. “I feel as though if Pac and I had any kind of sexual chemistry we might have killed each other because we were both so passionate and we loved deeply.”
In the same interview, Pinkett Smith said she didn’t feel guilty about not being on good terms with 2Pac at the time of his death, as she knew that he knew that she loved him.

Teddy Riley takes to Jada Pinkett-Smith’s “Red Table” to discuss his co-parenting relationship with the mother of his youngest son, Mykal Theo Riley.
The New Jack Swing innovator tells Pinkett-Smith and her co-hosts, daughter Willow Smith and mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, that the two configured a contract that he “lived by.”
Riley claims he “did not read” a portion of the agreement that states who gets physical custody of their son. In addition, he opens up about the child support portion of the agreement that states a specific amount that was expected to be split in “half” once his son started first grade.
“So she doesn’t want you to see Mycal because of child support?” asked Pinkett.
The Grammy-winning producer took to Instagram in July to express initial details of his custody battle.
“It’s my baby son’s birthday today and I haven’t seen him in three years plus,” Riley started. “I’ve done everything that I’m supposed to do as a father financially & mentally but because this woman have process evil way, I have to deal with the corrupted government ATL system just to see my son but that will all change.”
