Over the past few months, Doja Cat has become as reputed for the rollicking rollout of her new album Scarlet as she is for her dismissively witty lyrics. But no matter how spicy her rhymes or comebacks to fans’ criticism have gotten, there’s still one thing spicier: The hot sauce lineup on Complex‘s wing-themed talk show, Hot Ones.
It was only a matter of time until their paths crossed, and this week, Doja will finally take on the “wings of death” across from Sean Evans as she attempts to answer deeply researched questions with her lips, tongue, and throat burning from Da Bomb. The show’s been on a bit of a … well… hot streak of late, catching Cardi B nerding out about WWII history and Justin Timberlake doing his best to explain his lyrical delivery on one NSYNC’s biggest hits that led to an annually popular meme.
You can only imagine, with Doja Cat’s love for chaos, how truly off-the-wall her interview has the potential to get. Although Evans usually throws softballs, he’s still got plenty of (cough cough) hot topics to discuss with the rapper, from her decision to shave off her hair and eyebrows to the reception her new tattoos have received to her past as a true-to-the-heart battle rapper. So, while he probably won’t ask her about some of her weird associations with alt-right figures, she’ll still have to sweat it out as Evans grills her about her career so far.

Cardi B says that she’s not interested in making music about her “pain” or “struggles” and instead wants it to “just be about fun.” She discussed the idea of handling more serious topics during an interview on Complex’s Hot Ones.
“A lot of people tell me I should put my pain, my struggle, in my music,” Cardi began. “A lot of my pain, or struggles, or whatever the crap is going on, the masses might not be able to relate. The masses might not be able to relate. Like it’s like, oh my gosh, they’re tearing a new asshole on Twitter on me because I said this, this, and that.”

She continued: “The average person is like, ‘Girl! Shut up! I gotta work at 7 AM in the morning.’ I gotta do this, this, and that. However, tracks like “Get Up 10” from her debut album Invasion of Privacy are far from this. Many of her listeners have asked why she does not make similar music. Like most people, Cardi B is not a fan of the clean version of songs. A sense of loss comes with censoring lyrics, which can sometimes throw off an entire bar. Cardi called it “annoying,” citing the clean lyrics she had to say as “corny” and comparing them to Kidz Bop music. Rappers often have to censor themselves when performing songs on television, although sometimes, something may slip out in the heat of the moment. Sean Evans cited how Cardi said she wanted more people to ask her about current events, so he decided to question her about one of the most popular recent topics in the news today: aliens. “I don’t believe the aliens are real,” she said. “If aliens are real…and they’re smarter than us…why haven’t they invaded us?” Cardi believes they would want to control humans simply because we are power-hungry, and they know they could overtake us if they wanted to.

Deep knowledge and interest in American history is something sometimes associated with underground rappers or legacy artists but Cardi B’s interest in it was surprising to many viewers. She segued into the topic after Sean asked her about her interview with David Letterman and shared that visiting Franklin D. Roosevelt’s house with him was her favorite memory. She beamed excitedly about how surreal it felt to be in the same room where FDR and Winston Churchill discussed the nuclear bomb.

And as she reveals in the interview, her favorite era of US History is World War II (she’s just like your dad!). In the snippet, she claims “I wanna go home to my kids, this is crazy.” Despite the serious-sounding claims, the rapper is pretty much all smiles throughout the interview. She also manages to hold up to the spicy wings better than many of Evans’ other guests. First We Feast posted a teaser clip earlier Wednesday, September 27, in which Cardi admitted, “I’m telling you. My fans been begging me to do this show for so, so, so, so long. I have to give it to them, and I’m so scared. Oh my gosh.”
Evans asked Cardi whether she immediately knew her latest single, “Bongos” with Megan Thee Stallion, would be a hit once she heard “that Dembow-style” beat. Cardi explained that she didn’t necessarily realize it had hit potential, but it made her dance. Evans followed that up with a question about her process of recording clean-for-radio versions of her songs.
“Annoying!” she said, slouching back in her chair. “So annoying, like, you know, I’m doing the clean version, and it’s like, ‘Alright, baby, eat it up like a plum.’ And it’s like, ‘No, you still can’t play that for pop radio’ or whatever, and I’m like, ‘Baby, eat these peaches and plums.’ But I had no choice.”
The teaser clip comes after Cardi confirmed she was the next Hot Ones guest earlier this week. First We Feast posted a much shorter snippet, showing Cardi saying, “Oh, my God. I’m scared.”
“[I will tour] as soon as I finish my album,” Cardi told Andy Cohen on the September 11 episode of Watch What Happens Live, adding, “The album will be done this year. And it will be put out next year.”
