DJ Premier Looks At Rap’s Past, Present, And Future On ‘Hip-Hop 50: Vol. 1’

If DJ Premier had to sum up the past 50 years of progress in hip-hop in just a word, that word would be “longevity.” It’s apt; in the immortal words of the late, great Biggie Smalls, “you never thought that hip-hop would take it this far.” And yet, here we are, 49 years removed from that basement party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, New York. Hip-hop is now beyond being a global phenomenon; it’s the foundation of pop culture all over the world. It’s a fact of life like taxes, rent, and Google. It’s everywhere and it’s in everything, just beneath the surface. It’s in the way we talk, the way we dress, the music we listen to, the most popular sports and movies, and even in the seats of world government. “Far” is kind of an understatement.

To commemorate the longevity of this freewheeling, dynamic youth movement, one of the most recognizable brands in hip-hop, Mass Appeal Records, has launched the Hip-Hop 50 project. It’s an expansive multimedia effort encompassing live events, films, podcasts, and more discussing the history and culture of hip-hop. And, of course, you know there’s music. Over the next year, 10 EPs from some of rap’s most iconic and influential producers will bring together rappers from across regions, generations, genders, and genres for five songs apiece highlighting the dynamism of the world’s favorite music.

The first producer to drop is none other than DJ Premier, one-half of pioneering NY rap duo Gang Starr and one of rap’s most prolific and impactful beatmakers since 1991. His contribution to Hip Hop 50: The Soundtrack includes appearances from longtime collaborator Nas — their first song together in nearly 15 years –, the inimitable Slick Rick, brash convention-bashing duo Run The Jewels, Remy Ma, and contemporary favorites like Joey Badass and Rapsody. Premo was kind enough to offer his insights on both the EP and his 30+ years of experience in the rap business to Uproxx over a Zoom call in which he broke down the process behind the songs and projected his view of hip-hop’s next 50 years.

“Lettin’ Off Steam” Feat. Joey Badass

That was for his album. He hit me up; his album was already wrapped up. He was just getting in the mixing stage and he hit me up and was like, “Yo, let me see if we can squeeze one more in.” He came to my lab and we kicked it. Antman Wonder and I had extra samples I didn’t use for PRhyme 2. I was just thumbing through them just to thumb through him, and Joey was sitting on the couch just saying, “Yo, man. That one. That sound like something I could write to.” He wrote to it. We cut it right here. He brought the mic right in the room, did it. When he got down to the end of his album getting mixed to turn it in, he said, “Man, for some reason, yours just doesn’t totally fit the shape of my album.” And I was like, “Well, yo, man. I’m one song shy of turning in my EP. Let me put it on there.”

“Remy Rap” Feat. Remy Ma & Rapsody

I was still two songs short. I was like, “Yo man, I was working on my solo album and me and Remy Ma were working on one.” I was like, “I’d like to put that on there.” And they were like, “Cool. Then we could reach out to Rapsody.” I wanted to have two different worlds of female MCs. They’re totally opposite of each other, but they both were spitters. And the fact that I knew that they could pull it off with the two different types of approaches and just attitude, I was like, “It’s going to work.”… I was going to put three artists on it. I wanted Young M.A. on it too. And I still want to work with her ’cause I’m a big fan of Young M.A.

“Beat Breaks” Feat. Nas

When Nas says, “Hey, man, I want you to be a part of something,” obviously you don’t really want to say no. In my whole career, I’ve never done an EP. And then Nas said, “You get a record from me.” We recorded a few different things, but there’s some stuff that he wanted to, he said, “Let’s save that on the back burner for some future stuff.” He said, “I want to do like a classic break.” “Theme From The Planets” is one of my favorites out of all the ultimate breaks and beats and that’s the reason why I shout it out. When I told him, “Let me do a quick chop of it on my Serato” just so I could just figure out an idea of reworking that song, he fell in love with it right off rip. He said it reminded him of the park jams.

“Terrible 2’s” Feat. Run The Jewels

I’m very hands-on, just even from my Gang Starr era of working in Jeru-era Group Home, and Nas, and KRS-One, Rakim, you name it, Big, Jay. I’m always very hands-on with being a coach in the situation of recording and making sure we get the best take, the best delivery, all of that. Because EL-P produces a lot. I’ve known them since the Def Jux days and all that stuff. He comes from a long era of doing his own production.

“The Root Of All” Feat. Slick Rick & Lil Wayne

The Slick Rick, Lil Wayne was originally a Logic record Logic and I had worked on. It was another day he was in town. He just said, “I want to pull up and just work on something.” He did a song about one of his people that got killed over a money situation. A year passed, and he never got back to it. I reached out to him like, “Yo, man. I’m doing the solo album during the pandemic. How about you just let me keep it? I’ll find somebody to add to it.”

I reached out to Lil Wayne because I knew he could talk about money. Wayne sent it back the same night, like, “Yo, this shit is dope.” I sent it to back to Logic. Logic hears it goes, “Oh, man. I did that rhyme on another record. And I’m like, “Damn.” So he goes, “I’m going to write you a whole new rhyme.” I’m like, “All right, bet.” But the rhyme he wrote is some ill-spitting bars rhyme, but he didn’t stay on the money topic.

So I’m like, “Yo, it doesn’t fit the topic that Wayne did. So how about I just do a new beat for your rhyme, and I’ll put that back on my solo album?” Then that way, the solo album still has a Logic record, and we can find somebody else to still rhyme with him on that. Now, it’s like who replaces Logic on the Wayne part since Wayne went second, based off of what he heard Logic say? I was like, “Man, Slick Rick could talk about that money.” Reached out to Rick. He said, “Let me hear Wayne’s verse.” He instantly was like, “Yo, I’m ready. Let’s do it.” He said, “You want a verse or you want a hook?” I said, “Can I get both?” He said, “Yeah,” and he did the verse and the hook.

On the future of hip-hop:

Well, my goal in life is to live to at least 100, and that’s my goal. That’s what I visualize as my future. So if I make it up even to 100, man, I’m still going to be tapping on something. You don’t outgrow a culture. I’m going to keep on banging. I said the same thing: “I’m not going to be 40 doing this.” I’m 56, and I’m still ready to turn that thing right there [pointing to his MPC3000] on.

Hip-Hop 50: Vol. 1 is out Friday, July 15 via Mass Appeal. You can pre-save it here.

Meechy Darko Lives Recklessly In His Nihilistic ‘Get Lit Or Die Tryin’ Video

Get busy living or get busy dying, the choice is yours. Brooklyn wild man Meechy Darko’s latest Gothic Luxury single “Get Lit Or Die Tryin’” takes its inspiration from this quote, as well as the philosophy of 50 Cent‘s star-making first album, Get Rich Or Die Tryin’, as well as a sample (from “Hustler’s Ambition”). The gravel-voiced Flatbush Zombie demonstrates just how intense this nihilistic outlook can get in the song’s black-and-white video, which follows Meechy and his gang as they live recklessly, robbing gangsters and challenging each other to a game of Russian roulette.

“Get Lit Or Die Tryin’” is the second single from Gothic Luxury, Meechy’s upcoming solo debut album. He announced the album a month ago with the defiant video for “Kill Us All (K.U.A.),” a (justifiably) paranoid anthem detailing the systemic oppression of Black Americans at the hands of the government and its agents. That backdrop is the overall inspiration for Gothic Luxury, which he calls “the most personal thing I’ve ever done.” “I’m in an extremely soul-stirring part of my life right now,” Meechy explained in a statement. “Who I was yesterday may not be who I am tomorrow. I’m not who I was last week. There’s no telling who I’ll be next year or the year after, so it’s very important to capture this while I can still feel.”

Gothic Luxury is due 8/26 via Loma Vista Recordings. You can pre-save it here.

Coldplay Loves HER’s Backstage A Capella Cover Of ‘Fix You’

Last night (July 13), as part of their Music Of The Spheres tour, Coldplay put on a show at Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany. The band is on the stretch of the tour that features HER as their opening act and they seem pretty enamored by one of her performances… but not an on-stage one.

Today, Coldplay shared a video, taken backstage at that Berlin show, of HER and her band firing off a quick a capella rendition of Coldplay’s enduring 2005 single “Fix You.” It starts with some vocalists singing the song’s instrumental before HER comes in with the first verse. On the chorus, everybody joins in and harmonizes with HER for a gorgeous conclusion to their truncated cover.

Sharing the video, Coldplay wrote, “Fix You by @HERMusicx, backstage in Berlin. We’re so lucky to hear these voices every night on tour.”

This comes shortly after Hannah Reid (of London Grammar, Coldplay’s other tour opener) joined the band on stage, also in Berlin, on July 10, singing duet with Chris Martin on “Let Somebody Go,” Coldplay’s single from earlier this year that features Selena Gomez.

Lizzo Reflects On The Criticism That Has Come With Fame: ‘It’s Been Very Difficult’

Over the past few years, Lizzo has become an exceptionally famous person. There’s plenty of good that comes with that, like her work being recognized for its excellence and beloved by millions of fans worldwide. Of course, though, being in the spotlight opens you up to more criticism than you’ve ever faced in your life, which Lizzo admits has been “difficult.”

Speaking with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Lizzo says of her experience with fame and criticism:

“I’ve noticed that once people knew who I was… because before, it was discovery. It was like, ‘Who is this? Who is that?’ And then once people knew who I was and it became kind of solidified, they became more comfortable with using me as some sort of punchline or joke, or immediately they want to criticize whatever I’m doing because there’s levels to me that they don’t accept. So I’ve found that I’m always going to receive some sort of backlash or criticism whenever I put myself in a public space, just because of who I am and the way I choose to exist. […] It’s absolutely bait now. People use negativity as clout and attention, and it makes them feel good to get that kind of attention, which is… it’s very addictive. It is like an adrenaline, it’s drug-like. And I don’t know, I’m trying to distance myself from even looking at those people and reading those comments. It’s been very difficult because I just feel I can’t escape it.”

‘Stranger Things’ Actor Noah Schnapp Reveals That He Apologized To Doja Cat After Leaking Their DMs

Direct messaging is a dangerous game. Contacting someone under a romantic pretense can be trouble if the person makes your correspondence public. Doja Cat was the latest victim of this by way of Stranger Things actor Noah Schnapp’s TikTok, but the 17-year-old has assured fans all is well between the two after Doja Cat’s angry response.

Earlier this month, the young actor shared a now-deleted TikTok post revealing DMs with Doja Cat, where she expressed interest in his Stranger Things co-star Joseph Quinn. Doja Cat did not like this at all and made her disdain clear through a live broadcast. She understood Schnapp is young and had poor judgment, but stood on the fact it was “unbelievably socially unaware and wack” and “borderline snake sh**… that’s like weasel sh**. “The “Get Into It (Yuh)” artist even lost 200k followers after publicly blasting the young actor.

In another TikTok post on Wednesday evening, Schnapp said, “Guys everything is all good I apologized and I still follow her and love her music no hard feelings” with hearts at the end of the message. Doja Cat has yet to confirm things are good on her end.

Despite this unfortunate event, the Hot Pink artist is riding high. Last year’s Planet Her earned its fifth top five hit on Billboard‘s Pop Airplay chart last week and the previous week she celebrated 22 new RIAA certifications, tying Nicki Minaj for the second-most Platinum singles for a female rapper ever. Everyone takes losses here and there, but this doesn’t even tip the scale compared to her recent wins.

Drake Announces The OVO Fest Dates For This Summer After A Two Year Hiatus

Drake is known for many things: record-breaking music, Instagram caption-ready lyrics, a charmingly corny disposition, and an undying love for his hometown. His loyalty to Toronto materialized over a decade ago with his longstanding event OVO Fest, where he’s brought out the likes of Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, and many more rap titans. As with many things, the pandemic hindered his ability to keep the tradition going, but OVO Fest is officially set to return at the end of this month.

In an Instagram post, the “One Dance” artist enthusiastically announced “October World Weekend” after previously alluding to his desire to make the festival happen. He revealed that he is looking to turn OVO Fest into a full tour come 2023, but to start, he’s bringing it back to its roots on Thursday July 28, Friday July 29 and Monday August 1. The July 28 show at History will feature the “All Canadian North Stars,” which opens up the imagination to a few major acts that could appear. The July 29 installment, at Budweiser Stage, will feature Chris Brown and Lil Baby. A few days later (August 1), the show returns to Budweiser Stage with Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and a Young Money Reunion.

After not being able to tour 2021’s Certified Lover Boy and adding the June dance album Honestly, Nevermind to the mix, this is sure to be a huge moment for Drake, his fans, and, of course, Toronto.

Tickets go on sale this Friday via Ticketmaster. Check out Drake’s official OVO Fest announcement above.

Salt-N-Pepa’s Pepa Taps Into Her Inner Cougar In A Preview Of This Weekend’s ‘Celebrity Family Feud’

Family Feud is always bringing the laughs, whether it be ridiculous answers from contestants or theatrics from the show’s host Steve Harvey. Add celebrities to the mix and the humor only increases. This week, in a preview of Sunday’s upcoming Celebrity Family Feud episode, the chuckles came as a result of Pepa from Salt-N-Pepa tapping into her inner cougar.

Harvey prompted Pepa’s team with the question “We asked a hundred married men, ‘Your wife is a lady in the street and what animal in the sheets?’” to which the 55-year-old enthusiastically replied “A cougar!” As if that wasn’t enough, she gave her rendition of a growl while playing with her own hair. Steve Harvey was clearly entertained by the answer, saying “Run over here if you want to … Learn yourself somethin’. ” Evidently, Pepa had done her homework as her answer was the third most popular. Her partner-in-rap Salt had already given the number one answer, a tiger.

The episode also features Kid from hip-hop duo Kid-N-Play as he, along with Salt-N-Pepa, will take on the cast of Disney’s The Proud Family. Kid, real name Christopher Reid, didn’t yield the same response as Pepa when he answered “a snake” to Harvey’s question. It is left to be determined whether or not this apparent blunder will hold his team back from victory.

TikToker Tries To Expose Kehlani After Their Starbucks Drive Thru Altercation And She Wasn’t Having It

Starbucks is a place where people go to get their caffeine fix, meet up with colleagues, or simply get away from the madness of the world. But on Wednesday, viral TikToker Christian Williams and Kehlani showed that it’s a place where altercations can take place, though both sides seem to view the situation a bit differently.

Christian Walker posted a video of himself to Twitter which finds him yelling at the Blue Water Road artist for allegedly telling baristas that he is an “a******” and to be safe around him. He even gets out of the car and walks up to their window to repeat what he says while the 27-year-old simply laughs and shows their phone to the camera. Unbeknownst to Walker, Kehlani was actually on a virtual therapy session, which she confirms in a full explanatory video later on and sensibly shows why they handled the situation so calmly, on top of the journey toward peace and bliss they have been on for the last few years. However, this isn’t the full story.

Kehlani later addressed the matter in their own video, saying they were ahead of Christian Walker in the drive-thru line but heard how he was was “losing his sh**” as he filmed the myriad of flags in Starbucks and berated the workers before it was his turn to order. They went on to say he has a history of harassing people within that community — a community he also identifies with — and they simply trying to warn the staff of impending drama. She even confirmed that he did not post the full altercation, where he called her a “b****.”

The most humorous part is that Kehlani also shared a screenshot to her Instagram story of Christian Walker tweeting back in 2016 how he loves them so much despite calling them a “mediocre singer that everyone forgot about” in Wednesday’s video post. The icing on the cake is their Instagram selfie with a kissy face saying “Therapy works babes I’m proof.” In the face of a viral moment that could reflect poorly on them, Kehlani proved those words to be true.

Styles P Cussed Out Cops Arresting A Woman Outside His Juice Bar In Yonkers

It goes without saying that cops are highly distrusted by many communities, namely the Black community, due in part to their wrongful arrests and murders over the last near-decade. While hope for change in this regard is all but lost, people also fear speaking up and potentially becoming the next person we mourn. Thankfully, Styles P is not one of those people. Yesterday, a video of The LOX member spewing profanities at cops aggressively handling a woman outside of his juice bar, Juices For Life, surfaced on TikTok.

Styles can be heard calling one of the cops a “whole b****,” encouraging the woman to loosen up for fear of injury, and calling another cop “a f****** hoe.” As one of the officers approached the rapper, he assured the cop he would back up and not to touch him. “You slammed a girl! For no reason,” he stated and even pointed out that one of the cops was reaching for his gun as they attempted to arrest the woman. Thankfully the situation did not escalate into anything more.

https://www.instagram.com/stylesp/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=87b1047d-852a-4b4d-86ba-4c4ccba8418d

Upon the TikTok going viral, Styles P later took to his Instagram to address the situation. He admitted he got hot-headed but did not excuse the cops for their use of force, especially against a woman. “I don’t hate cops, I hate the mistreatment of poor people,” Styles said. “I hate mistreatment of poor Black people. I hate the mistreatment of poor Spanish people. Even poor white people in the hood, I hate the fact that it’s easy to throw cops in the neighborhood that’ll get a benefit, a salary with a bunch of people that they have no idea how it works.”

He even broadened the issue to the system at large, saying he doesn’t want to see the cops lose their job. Styles P is just one of many to acknowledge the flawed justice system, and while his influence may not be enough to make change any time soon, he at least stood his ground outside of his beloved establishment.

Bren Joy Blesses The Great Outdoors With Even Greater R&B For A Three-Song Performance Video

If you want a silk-voiced R&B up-and-comer to add to your playlists, Bren Joy is a better candidate than most. His profile has been steadily rising since signing with Warner Records in 2020 and at one point or another during the past few years, you might have even caught him opening for artists like Pink Sweat$, Jhené Aiko, and Megan Thee Stallion.

For Joy, it all started in his home of Nashville. Now, for his latest performance — as part of Uproxx and T-Mobile’s “Way Way Out Live” series — he’s leaving the city behind. Instead, he finds himself at Texas’ Cedar Hill State Park. Accompanied just by a guitarist, Joy turns in a smooth three-song set consisting of his “Insecure” (a collaboration with Sweat$, a previous “Way Way Out” performer), “Friends,” and “Henny In The Hamptons.”

Elsewhere in the video, he notes of leaving the pavement and skyscrapers behind, “Getting out of the city enhances my process by just being a palate cleanser. It allows me to really see things clearly and be as innovative and as creative as I want because nothing else is around you. It’s a clean slate. I think the audio that nature emits is just really, really special.” He also says of his creative wants and goals, “The only way I’m able to talk to people and share what I’m thinking is music. My page is like a diary and when I’m gone, I want people to be able to listen to my music and know exactly what I’m thinking.”
