12 Rap Lyrics That Reference Kevin Durant

Kevin Durant has been one of the best players in the NBA basically since he arrived in the league in 2008, but due to his overlap with Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Stephen Curry, he hasn’t ever really gotten to carry the title of being the face of the league. For that reason, Durant isn’t quite as ubiquitous a figure when it comes to references in music and pop culture as the others, despite his immense talent and the way he changed the game.

That said, there was a period of time when Durant had a claim to being the best basketball player on the planet. That stretch from 2012-2019 saw him get name-dropped pretty frequently in rap lyrics, particularly after he joined the Warriors budding dynasty in 2016. Here, we’ll look at a dozen of the biggest tracks that reference Durant (most frequently as KD, as that’s much easier to rhyme).

“Pop That” — French Montana ft. Rick Ross, Drake, and Lil Wayne (2012)

Gettin cheddar packs like K.D., OKC that’s player s**t

Drake is always good for a few sports references on a song, and in his feature on the 2012 smash hit “Pop That” he shouts out KD while he was on the Thunder.

“Crown” — Jay-Z ft. Travis Scott (2013)

Scott Boras, you over baby/Robinson Cano, you coming with me/These n****s like rotary phones/It’s a new day, hit up KD

After launching his own sports agency in 2013, Jay-Z boasted about his growing client list on “Crown” (taking a shot at baseball superagent Scott Boras along the way), highlighting how Roc Nation Sports had already landed Robinson Cano and Kevin Durant (KD would leave Roc Nation in 2019).

“F**k KD” — Lil B (2014)

F**k Kevin Durant/F**k Kevin Durant/F**k Kevin Durant/F**k Kevin Durant
That is the entire chorus for this song, which has a lengthy backstory. After Durant tweeted about not liking Lil B’s music, TheBasedGod placed a curse on KD in 2011 and even dropped a whole diss track on the then-Thunder star in 2014. For awhile, there was compelling evidence that the curse was working as Durant and the Thunder couldn’t get over the hump to win a title, with KD ultimately breaking through after joining the Warriors — which is, ironically, Lil B’s favorite team.

“White Iverson” — Post Malone (2015)

Double OT like I’m KD, smokin’ OG

Post Malone had a ton of hoops references on his breakout hit (before his pivot to pop and, most recently, pivot to country), including this KD line — also, if this came out in 2019, this could’ve worked for a double-entendre about OG Anunoby.

“Good Drank” — 2 Chainz ft. Quavo and Gucci Mane (2016)

Oh, you in a slump/I’m headed to Oakland like Kevin Durant/What is your point?/Square with the stamp, for Kevin Durant

One of Gucci’s first features after his release from prison, the Atlanta rapper doubles up on his Durant references, both to Durant’s move to the Warriors and as a fill in for the number 35.

“Draco” — Future (2017)

35 b**ches at the St. Reg/Fall back shoot it like KD/Back in the kitchen with the Curry

This song is Future at the height of his powers, deftly pulling together Durant’s number 35 into a line about his fadeaway jumper and continues it with a nod to Durant’s then-Warriors teammate Stephen Curry.

“Save Me” — Meek Mill (2017)

I see n****s switchin’ sides like they KD/I can’t let it kill my vibe ’cause I’m too wavy

Durant’s move from the Thunder to the Warriors made him the poster boy for bailing on your team and switching sides, as Meek Mill references in this 2017 song.

“Ganja Burn” — Nicki Minaj (2018)

Still every team’s number one pick in the draft/You could bring anybody, weatherman, pick a day/I’m Kobe, KD, Kyrie, pick a K

Nicki Minaj uses this line about KD (along with Kobe Bryant and Kyrie Irving) to hammer home her place as the best woman in the rap game, which doubles as a reference to a famous Jay-Z line about a few guys named Mike.

“My Name Is” — Cordae (2018)

The best thing from PG since Kevin Durant

In Cordae’s first single, rapping over the beat from Eminem’s iconic “My Name Is”, he shouts out his fellow Prince George County native.

“Gold Roses” — Rick Ross ft. Drake (2019)

All smiles, Kevin Durant trials/Had to blow it on the court, I must have blew a milli’/I’m walkin’ on all charges, that’s my new Achilles

Drake references Durant and his torn Achilles in the 2019 Finals (suffered against Drake’s beloved Raptors) in this track with Rick Ross that released a month after the fact.

“Burner” — Lil Wayne (2020)

I keep a burner like Kevin Durant/I keep a burner like Kevin Durant

Lil Wayne might be the king of sports references in tracks, and in this 2020 song, he makes note of Durant’s infamous Twitter burner accounts in the chorus.

“go crazy” — Gunna (2023)

I been talking to my accountant a lot, tryna make what I got stack tall like KD

For decades, rappers have been comparing their stacks to the height of NBA big men — Shaq and Yao Ming are the gold standards for this in rap — but in this 2023 track Gunna uses KD. That’s a good choice, because KD is tall as hell, but it’s also a bit funny because Durant has been fighting the visual evidence that he’s actually a 7-footer his whole career, as he didn’t want to be a big man when he came into the league.

Gucci Mane Has Been Accused Of ‘Stealing Ideas’ For His Albums, Domestic Violence, And More By Ex-Girlfriend

Gucci Mane has been credited as a musical influence by several rising hip-hop acts. However, the “Now It’s Real” rapper has been accused of dipping into another person’s creative fountain without properly crediting them.

Yesterday (November 4), Gucci Mane’s ex-girlfriend, former collaborator, and fellow rapper Mac Bre-Z took to her official Instagram with a host of damning allegations including theft, domestic violence, and failure to pay or credit her past creative contributions.

In a series of post, Mac Bre-Z claimed to have been Gucci Mane’s first ever signed recording artist (seemingly to 1017 Records).

“You loved collaborating with me on your albums & mixtapes,” she wrote. “But I would love to get paid for my writing credits. They say you changed for the better. So Why haven’t you done the right thing & just compensate me for everything I’m entitled to? Everybody eating off these records but me.”

Buried in the post, Mac Bre-Z accused Gucci Mane of domestic violence. “I never did a tell all & exposed any stories about your personal life over the 6 years we were together,” she wrote. “When you punched me in the face I could’ve snitched & had you arrested while you were on bond for the murder case of Jeezy artist. I never bad-mouthed you in the media or tried to assassinate your character.”

She went on to hint at potentially taking legal action, writing: “Enough is Enough. Times Up. I’m coming for what’s rightfully mine. Respectfully 🤷🏽‍♀️.”

She is credited as a featured artist on Gucci Mane’s song “Go Head,” which appears on his debut album Trap House. However, Mac Bre-Z claims that she’s made several contributions to other tracks but did not specify which ones.

In a separate upload, Mac Bre-Z alleged that her creatives concepts were hijacked before she could flesh it out for herself. “Gucci [has] been stealing my ideas & running off with them,” she wrote. “Zaytoven was recording me at his mama house when Radric walked into my studio session while I was recording my song ‘Da Kandi Lady’ from my DJ Scream mixtape. He straight stole my idea. Put Brick Squad on it and shot a music video to it. Y’all don’t know the half of what I went through in this industry. I’m telling my story.”

Mac Bre-Z closed by threatening to outline it all in a documentary titled, Life After So Icy.

Gucci Mane has not publicly addressed Mac Bre-Z’s accusation yet.

Gucci Mane’s Ex Mac Bre-Z Claims Rapper Owes Her Unpaid Royalties

Gucci Mane’s business dealings have been called into question. The rapper’s ex-girlfriend, and former label signee, Mac Bre-Z, had some harsh words for him on November 4. She claimed that she worked on several Gucci Mane albums over the years, and has yet to be financially compensated for said work. She claims that the work she did dates back two decades, and she wants her unpaid royalties. Mac Bre-Z has not been shy about her disdain for Gucci since they parted way. As such, she also leveled accusations of violence at the East Atlanta Santa.

Mac Bre-Z took to IG to make her gripes known. She detailed her in-depth connection to Gucci Mane in a lengthy post. Not only did Mac Bre-Z and Gucci date, but Mac was the first artist signed to Gucci’s 1017 record label. She also alleged that she worked on Gucci’s debut studio album, Trap House, and showed support for him during the rapper’s 2015 murder trial. “You loved collaborating with me on your albums & mixtapes,” Mac Bre-Z stated. “But I would love to get paid for my writing credits.”

Gucci Mane Punched Mac Bre-Z During A 2005 Concert

Mac Bre-Z pointed to Gucci Mane’s post-prison rebrand as the reason why he should right this alleged wrong. “They say you changed for the better,” she noted. “So why haven’t you done the right thing & just compensate me for everything I’m entitled to? Everybody eating off these records but me.” Mac asserted that she did not attempt to ruin Gucci Mane’s career at any point, despite allegedly having the material to do so. The rapper claimed that she was physically abused by Gucci during their relationship, and kept it a secret to protect his freedom.

“When you punched me in the face I could’ve snitched & had you arrested while you was on bond for the murder case of Jeezy artist,” Mac Bre-Z claimed. The rapper posited that she had given Gucci Mane the benefit of the doubt for long enough. “I never bad mouthed you in the media,” she concluded. “Enough is enough.” Mac Bre-Z recounted the incident in which Gucci Mane punched her during a 2022 interview. Footage of the altercation went viral, further bolstering the rapper’s claims. Gucci has yet to respond to the new allegations regarding unpaid royalties, however.

Gucci Mane And Sexyy Red Link Up For Bouncy Single “You Don’t Love Me”

Gucci Mane and Sexyy Red are musically compatible in too many ways to count. Sexyy Red grew up listening to Gucci, and both have a knack for making catchy, anthemic trap bangers. Sexyy literally has a song called “Female Gucci Mane.” It was only a matter of time before these two hopped on a song, and we can happily confirm that “You Don’t Love Me” delivers on the hype. The song is built around a catchy, guitar-based instrumental. It sounds retro in a lot of ways, but without veering into dated territory.

Gucci Mane takes center stage with his opening verse. There’s a lose connectivity to the chorus and the verses in terms of a story, but “You Don’t Love Me” is all about the vibes. Gucci Mane sounds smooth as ever over the aforementioned riff. Sexyy Red handles the hyped-up chorus, and her delivery makes for a nice change of pace from Gucci’s mellow sound. She also takes over the song during the second verse, and does her typically Sexyy Red thing. It’s going to sound good blasting out of speakers, which is what both Gucci and Sexyy are going for. We love it.

Gucci Mane Plans On Dropping His Entire 1017 Records Roster Except For Two Currently Sidelined Artists

Layoffs have impacted every industry, but the entertainment sector has been hit extremely hard. Gucci Mane admits to to monitoring these shakeups.

Now, the “TakeDat” rapper announced upcoming updates to his 1017 Records roster. On October 18, Gucci Mane took to his official Instagram to outline his pending decision.

“I just seen my P&L (profits and losses) with all my artists,” he said. “You know it’s a whole sh*t show in the industry right now, but when I’m looking at my P&L, and me being a businessman, I think that I’m going to have to release almost all my artists, except for Pooh Shiesty and Foogiano.”

Prior to Gucci Mane’s video, 1017 Records lineup reportedly consisted of Bigwalkdog, Brezden, Foofiano, Hotboy Wes, Kato2x, Li Rye, Lil Zay, and Mac Critter. Sadly, several acts including Enchanting and Big Scarr tragically died from drug overdoses. Currently, Pooh Shiesty and Foogiano are serving time behind bars for separate legal cases.

Gucci Mane went on to say: “This is a decision I didn’t want to make. I thought about it. I could keep all of them under the contract. But I said hey, fuck it. Let’s just make the unselfish decision, and let them take their talents elsewhere.”

Before you find yourself upset at the news, Gucci claimed to have “already reached out” to those he intend to drop. However, Gucci remains steadfast that he is still “looking for new talent” to join both Pooh Shiesty and Foogiano, and that remains where he plans to focus his efforts.

Still users online took to his comment section to urge aspiring acts to stay away claiming his record label is “cursed.” This is a claim Gucci Mane’s wife Keyshia Ka’Oir previously slammed.

What Was Former 1017 Records Rapper Enchanting’s Cause Of Death?

Back in June, rising Texas talent Enchanting (real name Channing Nicole Larry) tragically died. Shortly after the news was confirmed and shared online fans of the late “Issa Photoshoot” rapper penned touching tributes in her honor.

Even her former 1017 Records label head Gucci Mane expressed his sorrow in an Instagram upload (viewable here). Shortly after, users speculated about Enchanting’s cause of death. Now, it has officially confirmed. Continue below for more information.

What Was Former 1017 Records Rapper Enchanting’s Cause Of Death?

According to HipHopDX, Enchanting died as a result of an oxycodone and benzodiazepines overdose. In the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office public information records (viewable here), physician Jeffrey Barnard ruled the overdose as accidental.

Prior to the autopsy’s results, a source close to Enchanting spoke to The Shade Room and claimed the recording artist was allegedly struggling with her sobriety and “suffering from withdrawals.”

“She came to my house the last four days to get clean,” said the insider. “She tried her best and I did everything I could to help her, she tried.”

The heartbreaking news is a gutting reminder of Enchanting’s former 1017 Records label mate, Big Scarr, who passed in 2022 reportedly from the same sad cause.

In a fact sheet posted by the Department of Justice and Drug Enforcement Administration, oxycodone is classified as a semisynthetic narcotic analgesic. Benzodiazepines (common examples Valium, Xanax, Halcion, Ativan, and Klonopin) are described as: “A depressant that produces sedation and hypnosis, relieve anxiety and muscle spasms, and reduce seizures.”

The Opioid crisis in the U.S.as claimed another life as the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed that the cause of death of 26-year-old rapper Channing Nicole Larry aka “Enchanting” was an opioid overdose.

The Medical Examiner’s Office revealed that Larry died from a toxic cocktail of oxycodone and benzodiazepines. Oxycodone is the synthetic opioid and benzodiazepines are a class of depressants, commonly recognized in pills such as Valium, Xanax and Klonopin.

Enchanting signed to Gucci Mane’s 1017 imprint, garnering respect in the South among artists and even earned collabos with Pooh Shiesty, Foogiano and the late Big Scarr.

Gucci expressed his grief following Enchanting’s untimely passing back in June.

Gucci Mane’s “Lemonade” Nearly 15 Years Later: Revisiting An Atlanta Anthem

In December 2009, Gucci Mane released his sixth album, The State vs. Radric Davis. The album became one of the most commercially successful of his career, becoming his first work to go platinum. The album also spawned some classic songs. “Lemonade,” the third of four singles released ahead of the album, is among the most famous in Gucci’s extensive back catalogue. It’s not hard to see why, with the track embodying everything that Gucci Mane fans go to his music for. Loud production, a catchy chorus, and witty bars are all over the track, resulting in one of the first undeniable hit tracks in a discography that has had many more since then.

“Lemonade” features a beat produced by Bangladesh, best known for his work with Lil Wayne and Beyonce. A persistent piano sample gives way to the trademark bass-heavy sound of southern hip-hop. Gucci Mane delivers his trademark bars. Meaning that they sound playful because of his delivery, but once you dig into them, you realize that he’s not really joking at all. He flexes and talks about the streets, mocking his enemies in the process. It also would not be a Gucci Mane song if he didn’t get some bars in there about his ice. The song still sounds great to this day, and has become a staple of Atlanta history since its initial release. Watch the classic video below, and stream Gucci Mane’s new Gangsta Grillz mixtape with DJ Drama when it releases on August 16.
