Jay-Z Explains Which Of His Albums He Feels Is The “Most Important”

Recently, Jay-Z sat down with Gayle King for an interview with CBS Mornings where he revealed all kinds of interesting information. First, he explained that he had no plans to sell his masters like some other rap artists have done in recent years. He discussed how hard he worked to have control of his music and if it was ever going to be sold, it would be up to his children. He also spoke quite a bit on his back catalog artistically. One of the biggest points of intrigue for fans came when he revealed which of his albums he sees as the most important.

While you might expect it was his breakthrough album Reasonable Doubt, his biggest success The Blueprint, or even his most personal album 4:44 it wasn’t any of those. He cited Vol 2… Hard Knock Life as his most important album. “This is the album that’s the most important album because it was the album where I honed my craft as a songwriter and that balance of creating exactly what I want. And just as a writer, a technical song-maker. Song-making skills with real stories is when it all came together on this album,” Jay-Z explained. Check out the full interview below.

Jay-Z Calls “Vol. 2” His Most Important Album

Earlier in the interview, Jay-Z elaborated on what it would take for him to release new music. “I’ll say I wanna make music, but it has to be something important. I don’t wanna just make a bunch of tunes. That’s not gonna serve me. It won’t feed me, first of all. I have to be saying something important. It has to mean something, you know? It has to mean something to a larger society,” he explained.

Jay-Z also gave his take on the famous $500k or dinner with Jay-Z question. He understands why people give the answers they do, but ultimately told fans to take the money. Do you agree with Jay-Z’s thoughts on which of his albums is the most important? Let us know in the comment section below.

Does Jay-Z Have A New Album Coming?

The first part of Jay-Z’s CBS Mornings interview officially arrived this morning, October 26. The nearly 13-minute clip captured Jay-Z giving Gayle King a tour of his Book Of HOV exhibit at the Brooklyn Public Library. He reflected on his past albums, including Reasonable Doubt, In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, and Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life. It’s already been six-plus years since Jay’s most recent album, 4:44, arrived and became his 14th consecutive No. 1 on the Billboard 200, so King had to ask if Jay-Z has plans for a new album anytime soon — or at all.

“We can’t use the word ‘retirement’ for you,” King said in a separate clip posed to CBS Mornings‘ Instagram account, to which Jay-Z joked, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, nah, I already did that. I can’t do that ever again.”

Then, he answered the question: “I’ll say, I want to make music again, but it has to be something important. I don’t want to just make a bunch of tunes. That’s not gonna serve me. It won’t feed me, first of all.” King asked what Jay-Z does feel feeds him, and he responded, “I have to be saying something important. It has to mean something. It has to mean something to a larger society. Like, 4:44, for example. It was a personal story, but the amount of vulnerability in there allowed for a lot of people to explore the space.”

Jay-Z Reveals The Conditions In Which He Will Drop New Music

Jay-Z is a legendary artist who in the eyes of many, is the GOAT of hip-hop. Overall, he has dropped numerous classic albums and continues to be a pioneer of the genre. However, the last time we heard music from the artist was in 2017 with 4:44. In the eyes of many, this is a project that could be considered his best and most personal. It was an eye-opening body of work that showcased just how much Jay still has it. Since then, fans have waited for an album, but nothing has dropped.

Recently, Jay-Z sat down with Gayle King for a conversation about his life and career. As you may expect, the conversation eventually shifted over to his music and whether or not he was interested in dropping something new. Overall, Jay would be down to come out with a new project. Although it has to be something meaningful. In the clip below, Jay explains that making music for the sake of it just isn’t something that he wants to do at this stage of his career or his life.

That’s not gonna serve me. It won’t feed me, first of all. I have to be saying something important. It has to mean something, you know? It has to mean something to a larger society.” This is line with an album like 4:44 which is filled with personal experience and introspective thoughts.

JAY-Z Recalls How “One-Take Hov” Nickname Started

JAY-Z recalled the origin of his “one-take Hov” nickname while speaking with Gayle King at his Book of HOV exhibit in Brooklyn for CBS Mornings. The legendary rapper’s Brooklyn Library exhibit covers the entirety of his career in both music, but also his deals in sports, music, alcohol, film, and public service.

“This was when you were recording to actual tape. So, you can’t mess up, ‘cause then you got to go all the way back and cut the tape,” Jay explained to King as they walked past a display of his master tapes. “That’s where the whole ‘One-Take HOV’ came from. Because if you wanted a fly chorus on this thing, you had to go to dinner. It took an engineer hours to cut the tape… fly it over here… So I start learning my lyrics really good so I could do them one time—you understand—straight down, and I didn’t waste time.”

Elsewhere in the interview, JAY-Z discussed the long-standing hypothetical debate as to whether a dinner with him or $500,000 is more valuable. He suggested fans should take the money in the scenario. “You gotta take the money,” JAY-Z said. “You got all that in the music for $10.99 — that’s a bad deal. I wouldn’t tell you to cut a bad deal. Take the $500,000, go buy some albums, and listen to the albums. It’s all there. If you piece it together and really listen to the music for the words, for what it is, it’s all there. Everything I said was going to happen happened, everything I said I wanted to do I’ve done. There’s the blueprint — literally, the blueprint to me and my life and my journey is there already.”

Jay-Z Was Asked The ‘$500K Or Dinner With Jay-Z?’ Question And His Answer Doesn’t Involve Food

Jay-Z hosts an annual Roc Nation Brunch, but he’d probably bypass his own star-studded soirée if given the option to deposit $500,000 into his already-overflowing bank account.

Hov sat down with Gayle King for the latest CBS Mornings, where King asked him to settle a years-long online debate with various mutations. “If you a had choice between getting paid $500,000 in cash or lunch with Jay-Z, which would you choose?” King asked.

Jay-Z barely needed two seconds to think before shrugging and saying, “You gotta take the money. What I’m gonna say?” King’s counterpoint was that wisdom garnered from Jay-Z during lunch would pay endless dividends, but Jay-Z wouldn’t be swayed. “You got all that in the music for $10.99. That’s a bad deal! I wouldn’t tell you to cut a bad deal.”

He continued, “Take the $500,000, go buy some albums, and listen to the albums. It’s all there. If you piece it together and really listen to the music for the words, for what it is, it’s all there. Everything that I said was gonna happen, happened. Everything I said I wanted to do, I’ve done. There’s the blueprint. The blueprint — literally — to me and my life and my journey is there already.”

There you have it. While King got Jay-Z’s answer, an Instagram user named K Rich briefly bonded with Jay-Z over the question during last week’s Monday Night Football game between the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Chargers. In the Instagram video, K Rich told Jay-Z he would “take that $500K!” Jay-Z walked over to fist-bump him and say, “Be good, man.”

Jay-Z Finally Settles The Viral Debate Over Lunch With Him Or $500K

It seems like Jay-Z’s had enough of the Dinner With Jay-Z Or $500,000 debate. Last week, the rapper finally acknowledged the conversation after a fan told him he’d take the $500,000. Hov smirked and replied, “Be good,” but now, the 4:44 MC has finally provided his 2 cents on the conversation. Sitting down with CBS Mornings’ Gayle King at a replica of Baseline Studios at the Brooklyn Library, Jay-Z explained that it was a no-brainer: take the money. Although some might say he has invaluable knowledge to impart to his lunch guests, Jay-Z doesn’t think that it would amount to half a million.

“You got to take the money. What I’mma say?” Jay-Z told Gayle. While she argued that he’d have “beneficial” advice, Jay explained that he’s laid down the blueprint for his success in his albums. “You got all of that in the music for $10.99,” he said. “That’s a bad deal. I wouldn’t tell you to cut a bad deal.” He said that it’s far better to invest a small portion of that $500,000 to purchase his discography. “If you piece it together and really listen to the music for the words for what it is, it’s all there. Everything that I said was going to happen, happened. Everything I said I wanted to do, I’ve done… The blueprint to me and my life and my journey is there already.”

Even Jay-Z Wants You To Take The $500K

In all fairness, Jay-Z kinda suggested in the past that he didn’t think having lunch with him would be worth the same at half a milli. As the Dinner With Jay-Z Or $500,000 argument continuously hits the timeline, a tweet from TIDAL’s official X (formerly Twitter) account urged their followers to take the $500,000. So, it’s not really a surprise that Jay would encourage others to take the bread, especially since, as rumor has it, he already came into the rap game with his pockets loaded.

Interestingly enough, Haha Davis learned this firsthand. He previously recalled having lunch with Jay-Z. Although Davis was already hungry, Jay-Z apparently came to lunch a bit late and declined to have anything to eat. However, he admitted that plenty of business opportunities came out of that meeting so maybe, dinner with Hov might be worth it after all. Check out the snippet from Jay-Z’s interview with Gayle King above. The full interview airs this Thursday and Friday on CBS Mornings.

Ari Lennox Apologizes To Oprah Winfrey & Gayle King For “Ignorant Attack”

Ari Lennox has issued a lengthy apology to Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King after insulting the two back in 2020. Commenting on a post from The Neighborhood Talk‘s Instagram page on Friday, Lennox admitted she was in the wrong for coming at them.

“Y’all can take this however you want,” she began. “But my passion is SINGING. I am not an actress first nor have I been auditioning for anything. I’m beyond content with what God has blessed me with. I apologized because I FEEL I was wrong, and I feel like those women didn’t deserve that ignorant attack from me.”

She continued: “This is not to impress the self-righteous idiots, the true misogynists that love degrading Black women for their imperfections or flaws. We all have a million reasons as to why we become who we become and I don’t see the point in being judgmental and evil towards people figuring it out. I’m here with no agenda or motive. I was wrong and I want to be very clear about it. I don’t mind being real about it. It’s not my intent to impress you or please any of you.”

Lennox originally called out the two for bringing up Kobe Bryant’s rape allegations following the Los Angeles Lakers legend’s tragic death. “Fuck ass, fucked up, fuck Gayle [King], and fuck Oprah,” she said at the time. “Y’all are some self-hating pieces of shit fuck-asses. I have never seen a c–n more fucking c–nier than got damn kale and okra. I’m over y’all. I don’t give a fuck how rich y’all are, how much you fucking accomplish. Y’all are tearing down the legacies of so many phenomenal beautiful Black men and I don’t fucking have time for it. I’m sick. I’m disgusted. You don’t care about Black people. Okra I knew you wasn’t shit when kids was trying to take a picture with you and she said ‘Ooh I see your little crack phone.’”

Ari Lennox’s Apology

Lennox also shared an apology for the incident on Twitter. “I sincerely apologize to Oprah and Gayle. Y’all legends didn’t deserve that wretched ignorant live.” she wrote in a brief post.

Ari Lennox Issued Another Apology To Oprah And Gayle King For Her ‘Wretched’ And ‘Ignorant’ 2020 Instagram Live Comments

Ari Lennox developed a cult-like following for her soulful songs and her addictive Instagram Live streams. Some of her sessions made it onto her album, while others have landed her in hot water, including comments she made about media moguls Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King. So the “Waste My Time” singer took to Twitter to issue a second apology to the women.

“I sincerely apologize to Oprah and Gayle. Y’all legends didn’t deserve that wretched ignorant live,” wrote the musician.

In her original livestream, Lennox was angry at King for her line of questioning during an interview with basketball player Lisa Leslie about the legacy of her late friend and fellow professional athlete Kobe Bryant.

“F*ck Gayle and f*ck Oprah,” the singer yelled. “Y’all are some self-hating pieces of sh*t f*ck asses. If I’ve never seen a c*on more f*cking c*onier than goddamn Kale and Okra. I’m over y’all.”

Before her apology, Lennox revealed the reason she stepped back from holding livestreams, saying, “I can be a b*tch sometimes. Just putting it out there. Not always proud of those moments, but sometimes I am.”

Reflecting on her decision to stop livestreaming, the entertainer confessed,” I have been naive, a sheep, a people pleaser battling traumas and codependency. I was one mindlessly and unintentionally spreading false information in order to impress people. My lives were a playground on top of a fiery hell. I was simply unaware of the damage I was causing. So while some of those lives represent a sweet, free, and even seemingly happier or more confident girl, I was lost and insecure. No self-awareness and so unhappy. Addicted to entertaining others so I didn’t have to face my own reality.”

Closing the thread, Lennox wrote, “So, in conclusion, that’s why there are no more IG lives from me, and prayerfully won’t be. They’re too addicting (for me), and I just don’t enjoy tap dancing at the expense of my mental health.”

Keke Palmer Opens Up About “Big Boss” Autobiographical Projects

Keke Palmer is a versatile singer and actor. Breaking out as a Nickelodeon star as the lead of True Jackson, VP, she has gone on to become an Emmy Award-winning actress. Furthermore, she has scared in major TV and film roles such as Scream Queens, Nope, and Lightyear.

Fans are getting hyped about Keke Palmer’s upcoming autobiographical projects, Big Boss. Big Boss will be comprised of an album and a film based on Palmer’s life experiences. Both are scheduled for release on May 12. Palmer sat down with Gayle King on CBS Mornings to discuss everything about the upcoming release.

Palmer Talks “Big Boss” And Family Life

“From my perspective, I experienced a lot of misogyny and also just insecurities… We all have these narratives that we tell ourselves. My first record deal at 12 years old with Atlantic Records told me that I was always going to have it hard in music. The movie is about me overcoming that narrative and understanding I’m always enough, Palmer said of the film Big Boss. She also reflected on her relationship with her mother, “Yes, so she started off as my acting coach, my manager and now she’s my business partner and those things are great, right. I’m so blessed to have not only a great parent but a passion shared with a parent, but the reality is, is that my job also became overwhelming for me.”

She continued. “I started to feel so much pressure for everything my parents sacrificed for me to do what I did and so then it became a painful kind of bond because it reminded me of what I felt like I sacrificed and what I could be losing.” Palmer also spoke about her family life, “I’m ready to go home now. There’s nothing more exciting than lookin’ at your little baby boy.” Palmer gave birth to her son Leo on February 25. Palmer also walked the red carpet at the recent Met Gala in a custom Sergio Hudson gown. “You were a grown-ass woman on the carpet!” to which Keke Palmer replied “Come on girl! Yaaaaasssss!!” Big Boss, both the film and album, drop on May 12.
