Stephen A. Smith Weighs In On “Dinner With JAY-Z Or $500K”

Stephen A. Smith has become the latest person to answer the age-old question – dinner with JAY-Z or $500K. Smith weighed in after Hov himself told people to take the money. “I don’t think this is as cut and dry as JAY-Z says it is. If you are broke and you are struggling to pay the bills? You take the half-million. Because money talks. But if you have the money, just adding $500K to your coffers opposed to a one-on-one meeting with such a brilliant brother as this? I’m not sure you turn it down.” Smith went on to argue that a face-to-face meeting provides you with more clarity when it comes to advice and the ability to cultivate a relationship with JAY-Z “if he’s impressed by you”.

However, it’s a question that has proven divisive. A lot of people have chosen the dinner over the money simply because it would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet JAY-Z. Furthermore, there are a few things about Smith’s answer that are a little personal experience-specific. Smith makes $12 million a year from ESPN alone. He doesn’t need the money. But $500K is a life-changing amount for about 99% of the population. But what do you think – are you taking the money or the meal? Let us know in the comments.

JAY-Z Roasts Stephen A.

Additionally, it’s pretty easy for Stephen A. to give his answer thanks to his already cultivated relationship with JAY-Z. Hov was one of the people who roasted Smith for his terrible first pitch at a Yankees game earlier this year. According to Smith, the rapper texted him a picture of an article discussing Smith’s picture with a collection of sad face emojis attached. “He’s supposed to be my guy,” Smith said sadly.

More mockery came from the likes of Derek Jeter and Steve Harvey. Jeter reportedly told Smith “don’t mess this up” before the pitch. After the pitch, Jeter called Smith back and told him to claim he was playing “cricket not baseball”. Meanwhile, Harvey called into First Take to roast Smith. “Brother, man, I love you, dog. But I could not believe what I saw. Listen man, I don’t know if anyone who has called in today has actually thrown out a first pitch. I have thrown out a first pitch, at a Cubs game. I walked up to the mound, I’m actually 10, 12 years older than you. I leaned up back, I put some pepper on it. What you did yesterday…oh my god,” Steve Harvey said during a minute-long rant at Smith.

Overall, some believe Jay-Z can give you advice that will turn into millions. However, others note that $500K is life-changing for a lot of people. Jay-Z Finally Settles The Viral Debate Over Lunch With Him Or $500K

It seems like Jay-Z’s had enough of the Dinner With Jay-Z Or $500,000 debate. Last week, the rapper finally acknowledged the conversation after a fan told him he’d take the $500,000. Hov smirked and replied, “Be good,” but now, the 4:44 MC has finally provided his 2 cents on the conversation. Sitting down with CBS Mornings’ Gayle King at a replica of Baseline Studios at the Brooklyn Library, Jay-Z explained that it was a no-brainer: take the money. Although some might say he has invaluable knowledge to impart to his lunch guests, Jay-Z doesn’t think that it would amount to half a million.

“You got to take the money. What I’mma say?” Jay-Z told Gayle. While she argued that he’d have “beneficial” advice, Jay explained that he’s laid down the blueprint for his success in his albums. “You got all of that in the music for $10.99,” he said. “That’s a bad deal. I wouldn’t tell you to cut a bad deal.” He said that it’s far better to invest a small portion of that $500,000 to purchase his discography. “If you piece it together and really listen to the music for the words for what it is, it’s all there. Everything that I said was going to happen, happened. Everything I said I wanted to do, I’ve done… The blueprint to me and my life and my journey is there already.”

Even Jay-Z Wants You To Take The $500K

In all fairness, Jay-Z kinda suggested in the past that he didn’t think having lunch with him would be worth the same at half a milli. As the Dinner With Jay-Z Or $500,000 argument continuously hits the timeline, a tweet from TIDAL’s official X (formerly Twitter) account urged their followers to take the $500,000. So, it’s not really a surprise that Jay would encourage others to take the bread, especially since, as rumor has it, he already came into the rap game with his pockets loaded.

Interestingly enough, Haha Davis learned this firsthand. He previously recalled having lunch with Jay-Z. Although Davis was already hungry, Jay-Z apparently came to lunch a bit late and declined to have anything to eat. However, he admitted that plenty of business opportunities came out of that meeting so maybe, dinner with Hov might be worth it after all. Check out the snippet from Jay-Z’s interview with Gayle King above. The full interview airs this Thursday and Friday on CBS Mornings.

Jay-Z Reacts To Fan Who Chooses $500K Over Dinner With Him

Hip-hop’s philosophical debate surrounding Dinner with Jay-Z or $500K” has hit the timeline, once again. It’s an endless discourse that pops up on social media every few months. And while this conversation largely remains on X (fka Twitter) and other social media platforms, one man presented his choice to Hov himself. You could imagine that there would be plenty of things to say to Jay-Z during a brief interaction but somehow, this man felt compelled to let him know that he’s turning down the dinner.

In a video that surfaced this week, a man had crossed paths with Jay-Z, presumably at the Cowboys-Chargers game. While Hov appeared to be making his way out of the venue, the individual told Jay-Z, “Aye, Hov, I’m taking that $500K. I’m not takin’ that dinner, I’m taking that $500K.” Jay-Z cracked a grin before dapping the man, and responding, “Be good.” It marks one of the first times that Jay acknowledged the debate and it seems as though, even with his wealth, he knows how far $500K can take someone in this economy.

Dinner With Jay-Z Vs. $500K Debate IRL

For the most part, Jay-Z has dodged these questions in the past. However, it remained pervasive in the overall discourse within the culture. Pusha T, for example, once said that he would opt for the $500K, citing his frequent invitations to the Roc Nation Brunch. Meanwhile, HaHa Davis detailed the anticlimactic lunch meeting he had with the Brooklyn legend. Apparently, Jay didn’t even order food. Then, there was a tweet from TIDAL that simply read, “Take the $500K.”

In 2021, viral sensation Jazzy had the opportunity to speak with Jay-Z. And while he did provide plenty of gems during the interview, Jazzy’s dad revealed, “Mr. Carter politely asked her not to ask any silly dinner questions before her interview.” Clearly, Jay is fully aware of the discourse. Still, it seems like the individual in the video above got some sort of approval from Jay-Z. Check the clip above and sound off in the comments with your thoughts. Are you taking the $500K or dinner with Jay-Z?
