The 27th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival is proud to announce its official ambassador for this year’s event, none other than the Grammy and Emmy-nominated producer, actor, musician, and filmmaker, The RZA. As a founding member of the iconic hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan, The RZA co-directed the documentary “A Wu-Tang Experience: Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre” with Gerald Barclay. The film, premiered at Urbanworld on November 3, delves into the Wu-Tang Clan’s legendary 2021 performance with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.

Urbanworld is also excited to reveal that the festival’s Opening Night Film will be “American Fiction,” a Toronto International Film Festival award-winner directed by Cord Jefferson.

“I’m completely honored to be a part of a platform like Urbanworld which supports storytellers from all walks of life,” says RZA.”As a filmmaker, I understand the work that goes into not only getting a film made, but getting it seen. There aren’t a lot of film festivals that intentionally shine light on the works of Black Men and Women in our industry. Our growing number of directors and producers need more outlets. Urbanworld gets it and this opportunity to serve as ambassador to this year’s festival is an honor and a privilege.”

Set to run from Nov. 1-5, 2023, at AMC 34th Street and the SVA Theatre, the festival enjoys the continued support of HBO, returning as the Founding Partner for the 27th year, with Warner Bros. Discovery as the Prestige Partner. Tickets and passes are available for purchase at urbanworld.org.

Highlights of Urbanworld 2023 include a post-screening discussion of Misty Copeland’s short film “Flower,” the showcase of NBCUniversal’s new television series “Found,” National Geographic Documentary Films sponsoring students to attend a screening of “The Space Race,” and a special Friday night tribute to music videos titled “Lights, Cameras, Rhymes: 50 Years of Hip Hop on Screen.”

The Urbanworld Innovation Conference & Panel, scheduled for Friday, November 3 at the SVA SOC DOC Theater, returns to foster networking and community building among diverse creatives, featuring discussions on AI, culture, sports, and content distribution.

Tyrese Slapped With $10 Million Defamation Lawsuit Following Breakfast Club Appearance

Tyrese Reportedly Bails on Custody Battle Hearing

R&B singer Tyrese Gibson has been slapped with a $10 million defamation of character lawsuit for comments made on The Breakfast Club. Tyrese Gibson is being sued by a director over negative statements he made about him on ‘The Breakfast Club. The ‘Sweet Lady’ singer is being sued by Bryan Barber for defamation, and libel for $10,000,000.

According to legal documents, Barber is claiming the actor made inaccurate and defamatory statements about him during a September 7th appearance on “The Breakfast Club.”

Barker claimed that the “Baby Boy” actor attacked his “character and reputation” during the episode by stating, “Barber took Gibson’s [interview] footage and refused to give it back; Gibson paid [Barber] $35,000.00 total to film the interview footage; and Barber also stole footage from two other public figures – Big Boi and Dallas Austin.”

The filmmaker recalled he was hired by Gibson back in 2019, to conduct and edit a sitdown interview of him with Charlamagne Tha God. Gibson’s ex-wife, Samantha Lee, would be sitting with the actor during the filming.

Barber, the CEO and founder of Pivot Originals — a video streaming platform — says his company would provide cameras, lights, and editing following the filming for Gibson.

Gibson and Barker agreed that the interview would be filmed over a day and both parties “would split (on a 50/50 basis) the revenue derived from the streaming and/or other distribution.” However, that wasn’t the case as Gibson requested a second day of shooting under the guise of wanting a “‘B-Roll’ footage of Gibson spending time with his wife and their newborn daughter.”

As for Gibson’s claim about Barber refusing to release the interview footage, the music video director claimed the actor’s management specifically instructed him not to release any portion of the interview to protect the reputation of the “Fast 9” star.

“Gibson refused to adhere to the previous 50/50 revenue split that he and Barber previously negotiated for the CTG Interview,” the document reads.

Tyrese proceeded to mention the situation on an appearance on ‘The Breakfast Club’ claiming Barker was holding the footage hostage. In the interview, Gibson claims he spent $35,000 on it, and Barker will not release it.

Now, Barker claims those defamatory statements, and Gibson knew that “the success of Pivot Originals hinges largely on establishing and maintaining trust with original content creators.” Nevertheless, he made those remarks, knowing they weren’t true.

Barber is asking for damages in the amount of no less than $10,000,000, claiming the statements constituted slander per se to injuring his profession as a director (and editor/producer) and his business.

I’m so grateful and moved by all the messages I’m receiving out of Maui from the survivors of the devastating wildfires who are now getting their personal funding from The People’s Fund of Maui.
The strength of our people of Maui is beautiful and inspiring. Watching families and community come together after this tragedy is inspirational and I’m proud of our Polynesian people. Thank you to everyone who has helped by sending resources, love and prayers to all people affected by the fires and a loving mahalo and RESPECT to our OG cultural leaders, our local community organizations, and all our first responders and every person who came together to help our people.

And to everyone in my social media community right here. Our connection is everything because we only know how to be REAL with each other. Paul Rosenberg Squashes Rumors: Eminem’s “8 Mile” Isn’t Getting A Sequel

Screen Shot 2023 10 08 at 4.12.27 AM

The legacy of the cult classic movie 8 Mile won’t be touched. Eminem’s longtime manager and business partner Paul Rosenberg says that Eminem’s legendary film, 8 Mile, isn’t getting a sequel. The original 8 Mile was released back in 2002 and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Lose Yourself”. Rumors circulated after mogul 50 Cent claimed that he had a series for the movie in the works.

50 previewed the idea back in January while appearing on Big Boy’s Neighborhood. He said the show will further Eminem’s “legacy.” He most recently discussed the project during an interview with Men’s Health. “This shit is expected to be just as big as the feature film, just huge, it’ll be huge,” he told the outlet. “The interest in it is because the time period that 8 Mile was capturing further back, so as we move it into modern times you’ll see things about how we function now, how technology changed the way people enter the music business.” Paul Rosenberg, who was a co-founder and former president of Shady Records, clarified the situation on social media on Friday.

“Just wanna clear this up. There is no 8 Mile sequel. It does not and won’t exist,” he wrote. He didn’t mention 50’s idea for a TV series specifically. Users had mixed responses to the news. One wrote: “That’s good. Some movies are already unique. Don’t need a sequel. Except for an album called Relapse…” Another noted that the comment may not even apply to 50’s TV show. “Thank you, we don’t want that. We want The TV Show, Based off 8-Mile,” they said.

Thoughts?

Classic.

Chris Rock In Talks To Direct MLK Biopic

chris

Comedian Chris Rock has moved on from the Oscars drama with Will Smith and now he is in talks to direct a big screen biopic on civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King.  In collaboration with executive producer Steven Spielberg, Rock, 58, is in final talks to direct and produce a biopic about the late civil-rights activist for Universal Pictures, according to a release obtained by PEOPLE.

Kristie Macosko Krieger and Amblin Partners will co-produce alongside Rock, while Universal’s Senior Vice President of Production Development Ryan Jones will oversee, per the release.

The film will be based on Jonathan Eig’s New York Times best-selling biography, King: A Life.

Released earlier this year, the book “follows MLK from the classroom to the pulpit to the streets of Birmingham, Selma, and Memphis, [as] Eig dramatically re-creates the journey of a man who recast American race relations and became our only modern-day founding father — as well as the nation’s most mourned martyr,” an official synopsis for the book reads.

Screen Shot 2023 09 28 at 3.16.05 PM

Rapper-turned-mogul 50 Cent has been keeping up with the challenging action scenes on The Expendables 4. Stunt coordinator Alan Ng told PopCulture.com that the rapper/actor was “very powerful and strong, like a tank,” so much so that he inadvertently injured a stunt performer while filming the fourth installment in the star-studded action franchise.

“He was actually so strong that in one of the scenes, he was supposed to barge into a stunt performer and his strength resulted in the guy going flying and dislocated his finger,” he said. “The guy and his finger are okay now, of course.”

Ng added, “50 Cent is very powerful and strong so that made it very easy to work with him.”

Following Ng’s interview, 50 Cent (real name Curtis Jackson) shared a screenshot of the headline to Instagram, offering some additional context.

“I was 237 lbs in EXPENDABLES 4 I’m back down to 208,” Jackson wrote in the caption. “I still got a little POWER check out the movie.”

[WATCH] Wayne Brady Explains Why He Identifies As Pansexual

Screen Shot 2023 09 27 at 11.40.27 AM

Last month actor Wayne Brady revealed he was pansexual meaning that he is attracted to persons regardless of their sex or gender. Brady shared, “In doing my research, both with myself and just with the world, I couldn’t say if I was bisexual, because I had to really see what that was, especially because I really have not gotten a chance to act on anything. So, I came to pansexual because — and I know that I’m completely messing up the dictionary meaning — but to me, pan means being able to be attracted to anyone who identifies as gay, straight, bi, transsexual or non-binary. Being able to be attracted across the board. And, I think, at least for me for right now, that is the proper place. I took pan to mean that not only can I be attracted to any of these people or types physically, but I could be attracted to the person that is there.

Wayne sat down with Nischelle Turner from Entertainment Tonight for his first interview since the announcement. Now Wayne tells Nischelle that his admission simply means he is able to love any person regardless of their vessel.

WGA, AMPTP Reach Historic Contract Agreement To End 146-Day Writers Strike

Screen Shot 2023 09 25 at 2.02.04 AM

Finally! Hollywood can bring back our shows. The WGA and major studios and streamers have reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract that promises to end the 146-day strike that has taken a heavy toll across the content industry.

Negotiators for the Writers Guild of America and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers reached the finish line Sunday after five consecutive days of negotiations. Day 4 on Saturday mostly involved lawyers for the guild and AMPTP hashing out the fine print of language around complicated and groundbreaking additions to the WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement. The details of language around the use of generative AI in content production was one of the last items that the sides worked on before closing the pact.

“We can say, with great pride, that this deal is exceptional – with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership,” the WGA’s negotiating committee wrote in an email to sent to members at 7:10 p.m. PT

The strike itself will still be in force through the guild’s contract approval and ratification process. But picketing has been suspended as of Sunday night. Guild leaders are expected to vote on Tuesday on whether to formally lift the strike order against AMPTP signatories.

“To be clear, no one is to return to work until specifically authorized to by the Guild. We are still on strike until then,” the message to members stated.

Details of the contract agreement won’t be released until the final language is completed over the coming days. WGA leadership expects to vote on Tuesday on the final pact. First the negotiating committee will vote on whether to recommend that the deal go to a vote of the board of the WGA West and council of WGA East. Assuming both of those votes approve the pact, the contract will be sent out for ratification by WGA’s 11,000 members.

“Though we are eager to share the details of what has been achieved with you, we cannot do that until the last ‘i’ is dotted,” the message to members stated. “To do so would complicate our ability to finish the job. So, as you have been patient with us before, we ask you to be patient again – one last time.”

Tyler James Williams Fears Safety After Man Threatens Rape Then Shows Up At His Door

james

‘Everybody Hates Chris’ actor Tyler James Williams has been granted a restraining order after a stranger stalked him online threatening robbery and rape. The John Does then drove 2000 miles to Williams home and rang his doorbell 30 times over a 4 hour period. Now Williams is saying the man has caused him to suffer substantial emotional distress and he hasn’t been able to return to his home.

Radar Online reports:

Actor Tyler James Williams has been granted a temporary restraining order against an alleged stalker who allegedly drove thousands of miles and showed up at his front door, RadarOnline.com has learned.

According to court documents obtained by RadarOnline.com, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ordered the man identified as “John Doe” in Williams’ filings to stay 100 yards away from the Abbott Elementary star.

In his petition, Williams claimed the man in question had been sending him concerning messages on social media.

In another filing, Williams’ lawyer said, “Some of these messages contained explicit content including statements about being rape, robberies at gunpoint, drugs and social abandonment.”

Williams said the man seems “unstable and is also delusional since he believes we have a relationship.” His filing said messages that were sent by Doe included “I’m coming to the house” and “I don’t play games.”

Other messages included, “I’m not playing games with you here, my mind is playing games with me” and “Call me I can’t stop shaking.”

The star said the man drove 2,200 miles and showed up to his LA apartment complex on September 1.

Williams said Doe made entry to the building.

“Once inside the building, he repeatedly banged on my door while asking me to open my door,” the actor said.

Williams said Doe “continuously rang my ring doorbell at least 30 times over a 4-hour period. He also attempted to open a window adjacent to my front door.”

The actor said his Ring camera captured the incident. Williams said Doe became frustrated with not being able to make contact and was heard on camera saying, “I can’t believe I’m leaving and we didn’t get to talk. This isn’t f—— fair.”

“His messages and erratic behavior have placed me in fear for myself and have caused me to suffer substantial emotional distress,” Williams said.

He told the court he has not returned to the apartment since the incident occurred.
