It looks like fans of the Get Out Director, Jordan Peele, will be on pins and needles before his next horror movie on the big screen.
As reported by The Wrap, Universal Pictures just pushed back the Academy Award-winning filmmaker’s next movie set for release around Christmas 2024 … Sheesh. Blame the six-month-long WGA strike and subsequent SAF-AFTRA work stoppage for the scheduling shakeup.
Although untitled, this will be Peele’s fourth film of a five-year deal with his Monkeypaw production company.
Nope, Peele’s last film, did fairly well grossing $172.3 million at the box office. ICYMI Nope starred Keke Palmer, alongside Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya and Walking Dead alum, Steven Yeun, headlining a story about horse-wrangling siblings (Palmer and Kaluuya) who try to capture evidence on camera of well, a UFO. With a $68 million, Peele’s biggest of any of his features, he was poised for another big moment with a coveted Christmas season release.
Unless you were under a rock, Peele, took the movie business by storm in 2017 making his directorial debut of the critically acclaimed film, Get Out. The horror hit that had a social commentary undertone grossed a whopping $255 million worldwide against a $4.5 million budget. Get Out garnered four Oscar nominations and Peele, although nominated for Best Director, won the award for Best Original Screenplay.
With all that steam there’s no announced release date, or title for that matter on Peele’s next big splash in the horror genre. Stay tuned.
As reported on Blavity, Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Black Panther) is stepping into the big chair for his directorial debut in Netflix’s Th Kitchen. Actually he shared director duties with Kibwe Tavares (Jonah) and co-penned the script alongside Joe Murtagh (Gangs of London).
Don’t let the title throw you for a loop as the synopsis reads, “In a dystopian London, the gap between rich and poor has been stretched to its limits. All forms of social housing have been eradicated and only The Kitchen remains. A community that refuses to move out of the place they call home. This is where we meet a solitary Izi, living here by necessity and desperately trying to find a way out, and a 12-year-old Benji, who has lost his mother and is searching for a family. We follow our unlikely pair as they struggle to forge a relationship in a system that is stacked against them.”
The Kitchen stars Top Boy alum Kane Robinson, Jedaiah Bannerman, Ian Wright, Hope Ikpoku Jr, Cristale, BackRoad Gee, Teija Kabs, Demmy Ladipo.
As exclusively reported by Shadow and Act the Get Out star said, “This story is set in an oppressed world but it’s about the people who live there and their resilient inner life. No matter how much the class system dims and dehumanizes, with this film the light of our togetherness, community and humanity shines through.”
Co-Director Tavares added, “I’m very excited for audiences to see The Kitchen. Having grown up in London, the film really is a love letter to the city. It meant a lot to have Netflix’s support in making The Kitchen. It’s been such a journey from script to screen and I really wanted to make something fresh, thoughtful, and cinematic and I am so proud of the final film.”
The film debuts January 19 on Netflix and includes features music from Labrinth and Alex Baranowski.
Kid Cudi has had a few viral spats that lead fans to believe he can hold a bit of a grudge. During a recent Q&A with some fans on Twitter, he revealed yet another time he let something personal get in the way. Cudi has dipped his toes into acting a number of times before. A fan asked Cudi “What’s one film role that you wished you were cast in,” and the rapper had a good answer. “I wish I got Get Out. I auditioned and Jordan was impressed and I thought I ate that sh*t up,” he explains. Not getting the role must have stung, because he didn’t see the film for over a year after it came out. “I was so salty i didnt get it that I didnt even go see it in the theater when it was poppin. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem like Cudi’s grudge lasted too long and he ends his tweet giving credit to the film the way it ultimately ended up. “I was sick haha but to be real, Daniel was the best choice hes a master and did a phenominal job,” he ended his statement.
Cudi has shifted his focus back to music this year. Even though his album INSANO was delayed from its originally announced date, he did drop two new singles. “ILL WHAT I BLEED” and “MOST AIN’T DENNIS” hit streaming last week shortly after the announcement of the project’s delay. Christmas Day has been a coveted release date for the movie industry for generations. Massive Hollywood productions often fight it out to see who with reign, and it’s already shaping up to be a battle at the box office. On December 24, 2024, Variety reported that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and James Cameron’s Avatar 3 are both set to premiere. As if that wasn’t enough, Wicked was also set for release that weekend. However, the film adaptation of the famed musical will arrive on Thanksgiving next year.
Additionally, that may not be the only Peele-affiliate feature of 2024. His production company, Monkeypaw, has another film that’s said to hit theaters or streaming services on September 27, 2024. Like his other productions, nothing has been shared about the feature. Yet, fans believe Peele will stick to his horror-thriller-science fiction appeal and continue moving through those genres. He jumped into a new space in 2017 when he released his acclaimed Get Out, starring Daniel Kaluuya. The film placed him on the map of formidable filmmaking contenders, earning four nods from the Academy Awards. What if that seemingly innocent child was actually evil? What if, behind those friendly smiles, your neighbors were plotting horrors? What if the man in the mirror actually wanted to kill you?
In a similar manner, contemporary horror master Jordan Peele has found a new use for the most basic and versatile tool in the fear factory toolbox. While his films put novel twists on familiar frights like ambiguous racism and familial strife, he’s shown an equally innovative propensity for transforming our favorite hits, bops, and jams into the stuff of nightmares.
Like the build of tension over the course of the first act, his initial foray into this terrifying territory was subtle and could be easy to miss. It takes place at the very beginning of his first feature, Get Out. The Academy Award-winning debut was a shock in itself when it was first announced. The funnyman from Chappelle Show heir apparent Key & Peele (a misapplied honor in its own right) was going to do horror?
But then the film opens to the familiar tune of Childish Gambino’s “Redbone,” with its ominous admonition to “stay woke,” and it becomes clear that Peele understood more than anyone expected. Of course, that song is an undeniable favorite, handing Donald Glover a Grammy win for Best Traditional R&B Performance with its nods to the psychedelic funk of Parliament and the Family Stone.
In the context of the film itself, though, it serves two functions. One, to establish photographer protagonist Chris’ hip, contemporary awareness of pop culture, placing him firmly in a demographic of young, urban professionals who would be exactly the type to have the song on repeat. It’s no coincidence that this is also the group most likely to be exposed to the sort of wishy-washy, borderline accidental microaggressions that the film’s plot sends up.
But the second service of the song’s placement is that of the audience’s voice in the film, warning the character to watch out. And reflecting the character’s traditional ignorance to our cries in the darkened theater, Chris ignores the plaintive strains of Glover’s vocals, to his own eventual dismay.
And if that instance was the setup, Peele’s next deft disturbance of the musical status quo established him as an expert in not only the use of music to set the spooky atmosphere of a film’s fiendish setting but also in paying off that setup at the height of the film’s action. This time, the song in question is a Bay Area staple, the 1995 Luniz anthem “I Got 5 On It,” which plays in Peele’s follow up 2019 film Us, both the first act in its original form as the Wilson family drives to Santa Cruz for vacation and at the film’s climax when protagonist Addy faces her doppelganger Red in a subterranean fight to the death.
It’s in the second act that the transformation comes, strangling and stretching and stringing out the well-worn beat into something sinister. But this change didn’t even originate within the film itself; instead, Peele and his collaborators later revealed that it had been added to the scene as a response to the enthusiastic reception it received from fans reacting to its use in the film’s trailer, months before its release. The menacing strings and eerie pauses that had been threaded through the song’s DNA like a malignant viral strain had so unnerved audiences that Peele knew it’d be perfect for use in the film’s climactic scene. He was right.
The tactic proved so effective that it was later revisited in the initial trailer for Candyman in 2020, though the film was only produced by Peele, rather than written or directed by him (Nia DaCosta handles those honors this time around, although Peele contributed to the script, as did Win Rosenfeld, his frequent collaborator). The use of the Destiny’s Child 1999 fidelity challenge “Say My Name” cleverly played on the titular killer’s memorable gimmick — in order to summon the Candyman, you must say his name five times in a mirror.
This time, the evocation of Peele’s signature move is like a composer’s confident flourish at the crescendo of his magnum opus. You could say that it’s a rote device, that it’s a crutch, that it’s even (gasp) a gimmick. But in the hands of a horror hero like Jordan Peele, it’s instead a recognizable trademark, as indelible to his work as the hockey mask is to Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees or Freddy Kruger’s bladed glove in The Nightmare on Elm Street. Peele wields musical cues — from hip-hop to R&B to revivalist funk — the way Leatherface swings his chainsaw or Michael Myers looms with his kitchen knife. He turns a tool made for the purpose of evoking one emotion into a weapon with which he carves through his audiences’ expectations, bringing screams of both horror and delight.
