R&B Singers Who Have Appeared On “Sesame Street”

Sesame Street is an iconic kids’ show, and over the years, many R&B singers have made guest appearances. The educational series premiered decades ago, in 1969, and has since become a staple of children’s TV. Presently, with 53 seasons and counting, it is one of the longest-running shows in the world. SZA recently revealed that she has been on the set of Sesame Street and will be appearing on-screen with the muppets. While it is unknown when her episode will air, fans are definitely waiting in anticipation. Here are seven other R&B singers who have appeared on Sesame Street over the years.

Patti LaBelle

Without a doubt, Patti LaBelle is one of the greatest R&B singers to ever perform on Sesame Street. The powerhouse vocalist and Godmother of Soul has had multiple guest appearances on the show. In 1984, she made her debut appearance when she performed “Oh, How I Miss My X” on episode 2168 of the show. Subsequently, she appeared again in 1986, twice in 1990, and a handful of other times. However, arguably her most beloved showing was in 1999 when she performed “The Alphabet Song” with the muppets. With her unmistakable voice and dynamic performance style, LaBelle transformed the familiar tune into a soulful anthem.

Stevie Wonder

Another legendary guest on Sesame Street, Stevie Wonder, is an inspiration to R&B singers everywhere. He made a guest appearance on episode 514, which aired on April 13, 1973. While it’s been over five decades since, Stevie’s appearance on the show is still etched in the memories of fans young and old. In the episode, he sings “123 Sesame Street,” teaches Grover how to sing, and performs his hit song, “Superstition.” Altogether, it was a delectable treat to experience the singer’s unparalleled talent on Sesame Street.

Jamie Foxx

Soon after winning his Academy Award for Best Actor in 2005, Jamie Foxx shared a screen with Elmo and the muppets. He is among a crop of super-talented R&B singers who have appeared on Sesame Street. However, he is also a very accomplished actor as well. His first appearance was in episode 4111, in which he sang the alphabet. Subsequently, he also appeared in the Sesame Street holiday special, Elmo’s Christmas Countdown. It aired on December 23, 2007, and Foxx performed a “Nutcracker” medley, which he wrote specifically for the special.

Jill Scott

Three-time Grammy Award winner Jill Scott is a highly celebrated figure in R&B. She appeared on the children’s TV show in 2002, specifically in the first episode of season 33. Like the aforementioned R&B singers who appeared on Sesame Street, Jill Scott also gave a very memorable performance. While her time on the episode is relatively short, it is one of its highlights. Scott, joined by a chorus of muppets, beautifully sings “We Are All Earthlings.” Scott’s soulful rendition of the song resonated with viewers of all ages and continues to do so.

John Legend

John Legend’s first guest appearance on Sesame Street was in the premiere episode of season 37. On episode 4109, which aired on August 14, 2006, he sang “It Feels Good When You Sing a Song” with Hoots the Owl. Subsequently, he made another guest appearance on episode 4130, one of the later episodes of season 37. In that episode, he performed “Hello Little One.” Later, in February 2018, the singer returned to Sesame Street on episode 4814, where he performed “Come Together” with the muppets. Soon after, Legend achieved an EGOT, becoming one of the most accomplished R&B singers to ever appear on Sesame Street.

Destiny’s Child

Regarded as one of the greatest girl groups of all time, Destiny’s Child’s appearance on Sesame Street was an iconic event. The Grammy-winning trio featured in episode 3984, performing “A New Way to Walk” with Grover, Elmo, and Zoe. It’s a fun rendition with a dance routine that encourages viewers to get up and move. Accordingly, the group’s infectious enthusiasm and catchy lyrics made the song an instant hit among fans.

India.Arie

Another icon among R&B singers, India.Arie, appeared on Sesame Street way back in 2005. The four-time Grammy winner was featured on episode 4100 of the children’s show, which aired on June 20, 2005. While it remains India.Arie’s sole appearance on the Sesame Street show to date is very memorable. The singer, backed up by Elmo, gave a soulful and lush performance of “The Alphabet Song.” India.Arie also has a short appearance in the Sesame Street direct-to-video release, Happy Healthy Monsters. In the home video, the singer performs “Jumping J.”

As a young woman striving to stand out in the entertainment industry, it couldn’t have been easy to constantly be compared to Queen B and Kelly Rowland, not to mention other contemporaries. Thankfully, Williams is now able to laugh off long-running jokes about her being DC’s “forgotten member.”

In recent months, both Bey and Rowland have been all over the news, the former for her highly anticipated Act II album, and the latter for her new Netflix Original film, Mea Culpa, directed by Tyler Perry. While Rowland shut down questions about the possibility of a Destiny’s Child reunion album while promoting her movie, Williams is welcoming opportunities to talk about her musical past, notably in a new commercial for Uber One, in which she addresses the disparity in attention she receives when compared to her counterparts.

Michelle Williams Collabs with Uber One

The Australian ad premiered on Monday (March 4), showing Williams walking through a park, coffee in hand. She eventually finds a bench to sit on, where she opens her Uber app to see how much money she’s saved. “OK, OK, my Uber One membership savings don’t disappoint,” the songstress declares. “You know what is disappointing? I was in one of the most iconic girl groups and no one recognizes me,” she adds. Afterward, a man conveniently calls out her name, generating an excited reaction, only for Williams to realize he was talking to his dog.

On the topic of Destiny’s Child, earlier this year, nearly all the historic girl group’s members were able to pose for a picture together for the first time. Farrah Franklin was absent, making the moment slightly less than perfect, but still, seeing how much the other five women have grown into themselves over the decades is sweet to see. The duo appeared to have a blast at the event, chatting it up and even dancing to Destiny’s Child’s 2002 hit, “Bootylicious.” Bailey and Smith also posed for some photos inside the catwalk together, wearing similarly edgy fits. Bailey stunned in a black halterneck dress complete with red and white details, which she complemented with some simple black heels. Smith rocked a coordinating crop top, which she paired with black trousers, a long jacket, and a pair of heeled boots.

Fans are glad to see the two songstresses link up, and can’t help but demand a collab. Some are even dubbing them “sisters from another mister.” It remains unclear whether or not listeners can expect to hear Bailey and Smith team up for a song anytime soon. Either way, supporters are glad to see their friendship on full display.

“Mea Culpa”: Kelly Rowland Rejects Destiny’s Child Reunion Question During Netflix Interview

It’s long been suggested that Beyonce outshone her Destiny’s Child co-members during their time together as a group, but regardless of what’s happened in the past, Kelly Rowland is front and centre right now. On Friday (February 23), Tyler Perry’s latest film, Mea Culpa, will debut on Netflix. Starring Rowland as a criminal defense attorney who takes on a case of an artist accused of murdering his girlfriend. As with most good dramas, lust and passion raise issues between the client and his lawyer, who finds herself living a double life while attempting to evade too much danger.

The multi-talent acts opposite Trevante Rhodes, who manages to reel her in with his expert tactics of seduction. Earlier this week, Rowland and her co-star were speaking with the media about their work, at which time she found herself shutting down unrelated questions from a journalist. When chatting with V-103 Atlanta about her movie, the black-haired beauty was taken aback by an inquiry about Beyonce. “Your sis just dropped a whole new couple of songs, and it’s my understanding that Renaissance II may or may not be country-based, and then there’s a rumor going around that Renaissance III may be rock-based or a DC reunion,” he speculated.

Throughout her career, she has reminded listeners of this on many occasions, proudly owning her roots and heritage. Following the acclaimed Renaissance album, Act II is dropping soon, and Beyoncé is set to break into the country scene like never before.

Beyoncé made a splash in country waters in 2016, with “Daddy Lessons” off of Lemonade. However, this time, she will immerse fans in a full country experience. Fans are also curious to see if she will collaborate with any country acts in her upcoming project. In the meantime, here are seven songs in which Beyoncé has flexed her Texas, country roots.

“Sail On” (Destiny’s Child)

“Sail On” was originally performed by The Commodores, and released as the lead single from their seventh album in 1979. 19 years later, it was covered by Destiny’s Child and released as a part of their eponymous debut album. The track is an evocative testament to the enduring influence of country music on Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child. The instrumentation and lyrics of “Sail On” follow the classic sound and narrative of country music. However, the group went above and beyond in their cover of the song. While paying homage to their Texan roots, Destiny’s Child simultaneously pushed the boundaries of contemporary R&B.

“Suga Mama”

A captivating fusion of R&B sass and Texas country grit, “Suga Mama” showcases the deep-rooted musical influences of Beyoncé. The song exudes confidence and swagger while incorporating elements of traditional country music. “Black Parade”

A powerful anthem, “Black Parade” not only celebrates Black culture, but also pays homage to Bey’s Texas roots. While there are no musical country elements present in the song, Beyoncé proudly speaks about her Southern country roots. In fact, right from the opening lines, Beyoncé makes it known that she’s from the South where her “roots ain’t watered down.”

“Formation”

Undoubtedly, “Formation” is one of the most important songs in Beyonce’s entire discography. Its release marked the beginning of the unforgettable Lemonade era in 2016. In addition to its celebration of Black culture, the song incorporates subtle country influences. Like she did on “Black Parade,” Beyoncé also proudly refers to her Southern roots on “Formation.” The music video helps serve as a visual representation of most of what she says on the song. It depicts the many sides of Beyoncé: an icon, a mother, and a Black Southern woman, among others.

“Daddy Lessons”

When Beyoncé dropped Lemonade, the last thing most people expected to hear on the album was a country song. However, on “Daddy Lessons,” Beyoncé cranked up her Southern country charm higher than she ever had before. Without a doubt, this is one of the standout tracks from the groundbreaking album. It showed a part of Beyoncé some fans thought they would never see, and it was glorious. It features everything from twangy guitar licks to bluesy harmonica and stomping percussion. Since this song was put out into the world, fans have clamored for more country songs from Beyoncé. After seven years, the Queen is finally doing country, giving fans an entire album. The excitement is palpable.

“16 Carriages”

One of two singles released on February 11, 2024, “16 Carriages” is an introduction to the Act II era. Beyoncé surprise-dropped the track in the middle of the Super Bowl after her Verizon ad was shown. While it’s only been days since it was released, the song has already received widespread praise, and rightly so. The country is strong with this one, and while Beyoncé blends in some R&B elements in her delivery, “16 Carriages” is unmistakably Southern. Moreover, she’s been blessing her fans with numerous country-inspired fashion looks, rounding out a full rollout.

“Texas Hold ‘Em”

Also dropped during the Super Bowl, “Texas Hold ‘Em” is already a fan favorite. It is on track to debut atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and might just achieve the record-breaking feat. Without a doubt, Beyoncé was deep in her country music bag when she made this one. Certainly, it is the most country-sounding track the singer has released yet. While we wait for the rest of Renaissance: Act II to drop, “Texas Hold ‘Em” is a great preview of what’s to come.

Usher Cleared Up A Rumor That He Was Once Beyoncé’s Nanny: ‘I Looked Over Them’

In a new interview, Usher cleared up a longstanding rumor that he was once Beyoncé’s nanny. Appearing on Shannon Sharpe’s YouTube show Club Shay Shay ahead of his upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show performance, Usher downplayed the caregiving role he played for his fellow pop-R&B star.

Torward the end of the interview (about 53:00 above), Sharpe asks directly, “I read that you were Beyoncé’s nanny. Is that true? Were you Beyoncé’s nanny?”

“First of all, I’d be a ‘manny,’” Usher jokes (look, he grew up in a different era). “Nah, I wasn’t Beyoncé’s nanny. Daryl Simmons had a group by the name of The Dolls, and they came to Atlanta for the first time. This is before Destiny’s Child became Destiny’s Child. I think I looked over them while they was doing something in the house; I had to watch over them ’cause I was like the, you know, the authority — ’cause I guess I was the teenager at the time.”

Sharpe then wonders if Usher could foresee Beyoncé’s future success, using his discovery of Justin Bieber as evidence of his eye for talent. Usher plays it humbly, pointing out that Destiny’s Child, as a group, is still successful collectively. But he does note that even those around him would say they could see that Beyoncé was special.

Destiny’s Child recently set the Internet ablaze after one of its members, LeToya Luckett, posted the group’s first-ever picture of all five main members together. For those unaware, they went through various lineup changes throughout their history together, and they recently met up for the RENAISSANCE film’s world premiere from Beyoncé. We thought that was all, but we just got this special new treat on Wednesday (January 3) to witness. It seems like this was a particularly thankful post from Luckett about her year as a whole that championed this as one of its best moments.

“ALL LOVE,’ LeToya Luckett wrote on Instagram as the picture’s caption, which sees Destiny’s Child posing in silver, black, and white fits. “This was hands down my favorite moment of 2023. The Love, The joy, The Prayer, The Healing. May we all experience beautiful moments like this in 2024 @beyonce @kellyrowland @iamlatavia @michellewilliams. All of the Chilren.” The superstar R&B group began as Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Luckett, and LaTavia Roberson. Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin replaced Luckett and Roberson in 2000, and after Franklin left after five months, this formed their most successful lineup.

Furthermore, this caveat is why Franklin doesn’t appear in this picture, although this doesn’t seem to be a combative departure or omission. Regardless, it’s amazing to see Destiny’s Child come together after decades of greatness, especially amid certain rumors in the mill. Back in May of 2023, Beyoncé’s father Matthew Knowles teased a potential reunion album. While he clarified that the decision rests solely within the current lineup, as their manager, he expresses his wholehearted support of the hypothetical moment.

Meanwhile, back in 2022, the music executive explained why Beyoncé’s sister, Solange, never joined the group. “You would think joining [the group] would be a dream to her,” he shared on social media. “She had every opportunity to seize the success that the group was experiencing. And Solange’s desires and faith in herself trumped my personal desires for her. You see, I realized then that she had an unmatched character and an unwavering belief in herself. Me as a father could never get in the way of that. I finally supported and encouraged her decision. LaTavia Roberson, the original member of Destiny’s Child, is currently making waves. SOHH had the opportunity to interview the former Destiny’s Child singer, during which she introduced a new era focused on healing and philanthropy.

The Le Papillon Foundation

On Sunday, December 17, LaTavia Roberson held a private screening of Beyoncé’s concert film, titled Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé, on behalf of her non-profit organization, Le Papillon Foundation, at the iPic Theater in Houston, TX. Before the private screening, Roberson shared prominent words as she stated:

“This is for my non-profit organization, Le Papillon Foundation, and that means the butterfly in French. And the reason why I like to reach out to young girls, is to just show them that no matter what, you are beautiful.”

A Mini-Reunion

LaTavia’s event brought together former Destiny’s Child member LeToya Luckett and other attendees to celebrate entertainment, healing, and growth through Beyoncé’s Renaissance film, which was released on Friday, Dec. 1. LaTavia highlighted the significance of the film and why she chose the film to screen, stating:

“What I got from it is how girls can see how she [Beyoncé] transformed what she had in her mind. It did not take her overnight, it did not take her all day. I want the girls to be entertained and to be educated.”

On behalf of LaTavia, it has been a “Renaissance,” for herself. The singer/entrepreneur has consistently prioritized her personal journey, envisioning the approaching year of 2024 as a period of “restoration and healing.” Roberson even states she’s working on new projects and that fans can look forward to seeing more of her when she says:

“Now it’s just my time and I’m ready to shine.”

This sentiment mirrors the theme emphasized in the concert film, where Queen Bey expressed that their reunion symbolized a “new birth” and a process of healing. In their hometown of Houston, TX, the original members of Destiny’s Child reunited at the Renaissance World Tour, where LaTavia hosted the film premiere as well.
