R. Kelly in Court federal child pornography

Convicted singer R. Kelly is currently on trial in his hometown of Chicago for 13 counts of child pornography and obstruction of justice. The federal prosecutors intend to prove 55-year-old Kelly had sex with minors and then paid witnesses off to get rid of the evidence.

According to the state, Kelly has a “dark side” that he kept hidden from the world behind his fame. Prosecutors allege Kelly’s “inner circle” helped the singer cover up his abuse and went to “extraordinary lengths” to do so.

Triller Responds To $28M Verzuz Lawsuit: Swizz And Tim Have Been Personally Paid Over $50 Million In Cash

Screen Shot 2022 08 17 at 9.03.29 AM

Less than a day following the news that Swizz Beatz and Timbaland were suing Triller to the tune of $28 million for breach of contract concerning the Verzuz platform, the company has responded with a statement, saying that not only have Swizz Beatz and Timbaland already been paid an overwhelming amount, but also the two super producers have not yet met the additional requirements to receive the remaining balance.

TMZ first reported that the TikTok rival was firing back at Swizz and TIm, saying that their agreement with Triller is far different than how it is being presented to the public. “This is not a feud over Verzuz, but simply about earn-out payments to Swizz and Tim,” said Triller’s official statement. “Swizz and Tim have personally been paid by Triller over $50 million in cash and stock to-date, and they stand to benefit even more over time. In addition, they have annual obligations, which if met, and no breach has occurred, entitles them to additional payments.”

Triller continued with claims that Swizz and Timbaland have not met the terms of their initial agreement:

“Only one payment of $10 million is in question. We do not believe they have met the thresholds for that payment yet, which include, but are not limited to, delivery of a set number of Verzuz events for 2022. We have been trying to resolve this amicably and this does not affect Verzuz operations or Triller’s ownership of Verzuz. If this does proceed in court, we look forward to a judgment that weighs all the facts.”

Swizz Beatz and Timbaland’s lawsuit reads “To date, Defendants have failed and refused to make any payment to [Swizz Beatz and Timbaland] of the past due sums due and owing.”

To the dismay of many fans, Verzuz was sold to Triller in January 2021.

Chicago PD Pin Third Murder Victim On King Von

Screen Shot 2022 08 18 at 7.59.27 AM

According to several confirmed reports, the Chicago Police Department have now added a third person to the list of murder victims who allegedly died at the hands of slain Chicago rapper Dayvon “King Von” Bennett.

Reports have confirmed that Von and his cohorts had beef with a local gang known as STL(abbreviated for St. Lawrence), to which Modell McCambry was connected and it is reported that Von fired the fatal shot that killed McCambry back in 2012. There have been several different accounts from eyewitnesses about who killed McCambry, but the Chicago Police Department have attributed his murder to King Von instead of the other suspect in the killing, T-Roy.

King Von and T. Roy were best friends and have both been murdered since the 2012 shooting. This case marks the second murder that’s been attributed to King Von’s name since his untimely death in November 2020.

Buying Back The Culture – How The Black Promoters Collective Is Changing The Face Of Live Music

Black Promoters Collective

It started, as so many stories do today, with a phone call about COVID-19. The devastating effect of the virus was being felt by the music industry. Touring was impossible, and this hit Black and independent promoters with a devastating impact. But it was from these conversations that the Black Promoters Collective was born.

With the murder of George Floyd, and the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement, the BPC recognized the importance of pooling together resources and knowledge to drive change in the music industry. A step that became not just necessary, but essential.

The BPC felt that the shared experience of Black musicians and promoters, their successes and their voices, could no longer be ignored by a biased industry. Troy Brown, Chief Marketing Officer of the BPC said “It’s time for us, as the culture, to buy back the culture. We need to go to these artists and say, ‘Here’s what we can do for you that some of these other big corporate entities can’t.’”

Now, just a little over two years later, the BPC grossed $60 million in their first quarter by putting on some impressive tours. The Collective headed up a 30-city tour for New Edition, called The Culture Tour featuring Charlie Wilson and Jodeci.

Another tour for Maxwell would feature Anthony Hamilton and Joe across 25 cities. Closing up an astounding quarter with a six-day tour featuring the legendary Patti LaBelle.

Off the back of this success, BPC is now promoting a 23-city tour for Mary J. Blige, the Good Morning Gorgeous arena tour. The tour will feature support from Ella Mai and Queen Naija.

The BPC is clearly starting to claim its share of the market. Working collectively, they sought to buy tours. Their collective work and expertise allow them to bid for entire tours, rather than smaller single dates or venues.

Their combined market weight, bringing together expertise from members from Detroit; Atlanta; Houston; Raleigh, N.C.; New York/New Jersey, Oakland and California, allows them to compete on a level playing field with giants like AEG and Live Nation.

History doesn’t repeat, but it does rhyme. This is not the first time that Black promoters have joined forces to confront the deep systemic white bias of the live music industry.

In 1998, a $700 million lawsuit was filed against multiple promoters and booking agencies by a group calling themselves The Black Promoters Agency. The lawsuit claimed antitrust and civil rights violations, but would be lost in 2005.

By contrast, the BPC continues to make inroads into the live music industry. With a mindset that firmly believes in reclaiming and buying back culture that was theirs in the first place, the BPC uses their Collective economics and business knowledge to their advantage.

The BPC has a mission of inclusion, and they mean it. They seek to work across multiple genres with a range of artists. Sticking to their mission, the BPC has managed to bring an increasing number of Black-owned businesses, as well as people of color, into the live music industry. And not just artists, but everyone from the caterers to the vendor partners. An action that, according to BPC’s Troy Brown, “Doesn’t happen in other, bigger corporate outfits.

The BPC is making huge strides towards achieving their mission. By making the industry more inclusive, the BPC ensures a world that respects the work of Black promoters and provides artists and fans with options that are not just Live Nation and AEG.

A recent video posted by EDM duo The Chainsmokers on their TikTok shows ATL legend T.I. punching one ofthe group members in the face for kissing him on the cheek.

On Tuesday, Andrew “Drew” Taggart and Alexander “Alex” Pall posted their recent meet with T.I. on TikTok entitled “When meeting T.I. goes wrong”, showing a pic of Taggart with Tip before the video shows the two in the back of a car.

Taggart says that he kissed T.I. because he was “feeling the vibes way too hard.” “T.I. just literally punched me in the face,” he says as Pall laughs in the background. “We’re in a vibe and I, like, gave him a kiss on the cheek — it was totally my fault.”

He continued, “And he was like, ‘Don’t do that.’ And I was like, ‘OK.’ He pushed me off and I was like, ‘Alright, my bad’ … And he was like, ‘Alright cool, we’re good.’ It was the weirdest interaction ever. First of all, T.I. is fully in the right here. I was feeling the vibes way too hard and I kissed T.I. on the cheek. And he punched me in the face for it! It’s fully fine.”

Promoter Files $150K Lawsuit Against Young Thug Over Canceled Show Due To His Incarceration

Screen Shot 2022 08 17 at 5.38.57 AM

According to a report from HotNewHipHop, a promotion company has filed a lawsuit against Young Thug while he is being held in Fulton County Jail for not returning a $150K deposit for a 45-minute stage performance that would ultimately cost $300K.

Back in January, A-1 Concert Entertainment contracted Young Thug, giving him the $150K up front and the remainder of the deposit and the end of his performance. A-! sought a refund after Thugger was arrested on RICO charges, contacting YSL Touring for their monetary return, but they were never refunded. Thug is now being sued for breach of contract.

Brian Steel, Young Thug’s attorney, says that the lawsuit taints the jury pool, saying, “Whoever is placing items of discovery online is not doing anybody a favor. It is totally inappropriate to try this case on social media. This case will be tried fairly and justly in Fulton County Superior Court.”

Thug also faces more legal woes, with the Fulton County D.A. claiming that YSL supporters are threatening a witness and their family in the RICO case against Thug and 27 other YSL members. District Attorney Fani Willis uncovered a document circulating on social media that is part of the witness’ statement. The witness contends that his life and that of his children are now in danger.

Thug is set for trial for January 9, 2023.

Swizz Beatz And Timbaland Sue Triller For $28M In Verzuz Lawsuit

Screen Shot 2022 08 17 at 9.03.29 AM

After creating an unprecedented platform for established artists and their fans during the pandemic, Swizz Beatz and TImbaland are suing Triller for their intellectual property to the tune of eight figures.

The two super producers claim that they were never paid by Triller, the now world famous video-sharing social networking service, for their Verzuz concept that Triller now owns. According to the lawsuit obtained by TMZ, Swizz and Timbaland sold Verzuz to Triller back in January 2021, but Triller defaulted on the deal after making just two payments.

The two producers claim that they settled with Triller after the first default payment, but the company once again made an installment payment and didn’t pay the remaining balance.

Swizz and Timbaland are now seeking $28 million dollars in damages from Triller plus interest. Triller has yet to respond to the lawsuit.
