On today’s date, 43 years ago, Hip Hop’s first Billboard Top 40 single, “Rapper’s Delight,” was released by Englewood, New Jersey’s Sugarhill Gang. As one of Hip Hop’s earliest relics, this single, written by The Cold Crush Brothers’ own Grandmaster Caz, is credited with bringing the art of rap to a multicultural mainstream audience.
In the ’70s, disco and soul still reigned supreme in the clubs and lounges of the country’s urban centers. In its most primitive form, Hip Hop was still misunderstood (and exclusive to New York City and California). Breaking, tagging, rapping, and spinning records were widely recognized as the borderline criminal activities of whatever city’s urban youth. The culture’s cult following was majority made up of housing project residence, the type to not frequent the discos and bars of their respective downtown centers. Every once in and awhile, someone would drop a single that would break through and get some shine on the club scene but never make much of a splash nationally. “Rapper’s Delight” was a different story.
On September 20, 1979, new wave bands Blondie andChic were playing a concert at New York’s renown Palladium with British punk rock band The Clash; Hip Hop’s earliest socialite (and soon to be television host)Fab Five Freddy was on the scene with Sugarhill Gang members Big Bank Hank, Mike Wright, and Master Gee. Having just released a single featuring Chic’s hit single “Good Times” from their recent international album Risqué, it was natural for the gang to hop on stage and start freestyling as soon as Chic dropped the bass line.
Sometime later, Chic’s Nile Rodgers was out at New York’s Club Leviticus and heard a recorded cut of the very song The Sugarhill Gang ever-so-delightfully interrupted his concert weeks earlier. Enraged, Rodgers immediately sought legal action and attempted to sue the Sugarhill Gang for using his band’s instrumental in their single. The lawsuit was settled out of court, and appropriate credit was given to Chic in their part of the song.
With the lawsuit and legal attention came a swarm of popularity. Disc Jockeys in clubs across the country began to spin this record every night of the week. The single gained so much play in the United States that clubs across the globe began to push this song like no tomorrow. Although the single may have peaked at #36 on the Billboard 200, it was #1 in Canada and the Netherlands, #2 in Belgium, France, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and #3 in Germany and the UK. This single song sold platinum in both the United States and Canada, with over 5 million copies sold worldwide.
“Rapper’s Delight” may be the most important single of Hip Hop culture. It didn’t event style, it wasn’t the first to gain mainstream success, it wasn’t even from New York, but it was the biggest of its time. What “Rapper’s Delight” did was make it “ok” to listen to and support rap music out in the open. Before this single, Hip Hop was an urban taboo. Upon its release, the connotation transformed from one synonymous with the ghetto to a new and hip musical genre. In a way, “Rapper’s Delight” gentrified Hip Hop in a way that made it profitable. Without it, the culture would not be a powerful as it is today.
According to a report from TMZ, Tory Lanez can breathe easy for a couple of months as his trial in the Megan Thee Stallion shooting has been postponed because of his lawyer’s schedule.
The report says that the new trial date will be between November 28 and December 8, with Megan’s former best friend, Kelsey Harris, who was in the SUV with Megan and Tory on the night of the shooting, is set to testify for the prosecution.
In December 2021, a LAPD officer testified that Megan initially reported that she cut her foot on glass before she reported that the injury was caused by Lanez shooting her while yelling, “Dance, bitch! Dance!! She claimed that she was trying to protect Lanez in the apex of the George Floyd murder and riots, fearing what would happen if she told police that he had a gun.
Tory’s facing one count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and one count of carrying a concealed, unregistered weapon.
He’s plead not guilty, but if convicted, he could face up to 22 years in prison.
Nick Cannon and model LaNisha Cole have welcomed their first child together and Nick’s 9th child.
Nick posted to his Instagram page a heartfelt note and a photo of his new family.
Introducing ONYX ICE COLE CANNON… Once again Today I am in Awe of the Devine Feminine! God has given me and @MissLanishaCole the privilege of hosting an Angel here on earth. I vow to protect, provide, guide and love this child to the best of my abilities. In this moment of celebration and jubilee, I wish to mute any low vibrational frequencies and only rejoice with the Highest Class of Civilization who are truly aligned with our purpose here in this dimension. We all learn so much from these Angels we call children. I am learning that it is not the limited amount of time we have on this planet but it’s the limited amount of love that is the issue. And I promise to love this little girl with all my heart, regardless what anyone says…I’ve given up on attempting to define myself for the world or society but instead I’m doing the work to heal and grow into the infinite Being God ordained me to be. Hopefully I can teach Onyx the same, to not let others shame or ridicule her with their outside opinions, because when they do they are only projecting their own harsh experiences, pain and social programming onto her unblemished beauty. As we all know I am not easily triggered and have quite tough skin and have always been an open book but not everyone in my family has that same level of strength. So I pray and ask others to please project all criticism and cynicism towards ME and not the loving and precious Mothers of my children. @MissLanishaCole is one of the most guileless, peaceful and nonconfrontational kind souls I’ve ever witnessed, and only deserves to revel in this moment of blissful joy of motherhood. Please give her that. She is so loving and pure hearted. As for me, if you are truly concerned during this time of Spiritual Warfare, my inner struggles with self, mental wellness and physical health concerns… Just continue to pray for me and my entire family that God will grant us Peace that surpasses all Understanding.
Check out a few videos of Lanisha who has also had a successful modeling career. Congrats to the happy couple.
In what is viewed as a haunting interview with DJ Akademiks on his Off The Record podcast, late Philly rapper PNB Rock talked with the culture critic about his close call in Los Angeles with a group of gang members while visiting the City of Angels with his family. The 30 year old “Selfish” singer talks about not being caught slipping by would be assailants not even a month before he would be shot dead in Roscoe’s Chicken And Waffles in South Central; just one day before the 28th anniversary of the death of late cultural icon Tupac Shakur.
“Somebody tried me on [ the Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles], like mid-pandemic,” the late rapper/singer said. “N*ggas was talking loud as shit wanting me to hear their conversation and it’s like, ‘I’m with my peoples — my daughter and my girl. Why are they talking about this gangsta shit? What the fuck is going on?’So I’m like, ‘Man, we outta here.’ My girl like, ‘Nah, we ain’t — what’s wrong?’ I’m just going off of the vibes. She ain’t peep it, she be thinking I’m tripping. She peeped that I’m serious so she’s like, ‘Alright, we out.’”
PNB continued, saying, “I ain’t go in the store for two seconds, the same people come from out the car, hop in the store hype as shit, say some gang banging shit…I recognized the energy. He started talking to me on some gangsta shit. I’m like, ‘Bruh, do you know me from somewhere?’ He like, ‘N*gga, yeah I know who you is!’ Trying to get me to, like, get into some shit. So I flagged him off and just walked out the store ’cause I already know where this shit ’bout to go … You don’t want to be nervous and make it seem like something ’bout to happen.”
In an eerily similar situation, PNB Rock was gunned down and robbed, passing away from his injuries hours after being shot.

The restaurant where slain rapper PnB Rock, real name Rakim Allen, was murdered on Monday is open for business again. According to reports the 30-year-old “Selfish” artist was dining with his girlfriend at Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles in South L.A, when he was shot and robbed of his jewelry.
The restaurant opened yesterday, with staff saying they had cleaned the interior. Roscoe’s was practically empty on Tuesday, as a gruesome video showing the Philly native fighting for his life and bleeding out on the floor circulated social media.
TMZreported employees who were working during the shooting were given the day off. Some have called the decision to open the restaurant so soon disrespectful while others have questioned the thoroughness of the cleaning.
Rock’s girlfriend and child’s mother, Steph Sibounheuang posted their location on her IG stories that has led to much speculation of the cause of his attack. While PnB Rock was seen flashing his jewelry on his Insta story earlier that same day.
According to the LA Times, Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore revealed the Instagram post with geo tagging to Roscoe’s may have led to his killing.
Moore said the fatal attack “occurred soon after the rapper was tagged online as being at the restaurant,” and police are investigating whether that is what prompted the robbery. Police are still working to identify the suspect.
Tupac Shakur was killed when he was just 25 years old. Now two Las Vegas-based podcasts are offering a substantial reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person who killed the iconic rapper 26 years ago.
Tupac Shakur is regarded as one of the most symbolic and influential rappers of all time. 2Pac ranks among the best-selling music artists, having sold more than 75 million records worldwide.
The reward is $100,000. Tupac died September 13, 1996, six days after he was hit by four bullets in a drive-by shooting at an intersection while leaving a Mike Tyson fight at the MGM Grand Plaza.

Cardi B returned to her old middle school in the Bronx on Tuesday to cheers from students. The Grammy award-winning raptress talked to her alma mater about her experience in the public school system and the importance of an education.
While visiting I.S. 232 in the Bronx the “Up” creator also announced a donation of $100,000.
The money will go towards implementing activities like dance programs, tutoring, music and more.
After surprising the students and faculty, Cardi B answered questions and took photos with the excited middle schoolers.
The school, which has more than 300 students, said “We are thrilled to welcome Cardi B back home to I.S. 232 in the Bronx, and we are so grateful for her generous contribution to her alma mater.”
“Cardi B’s commitment of $100,000 for the arts will help the school’s kids soar to their highest heights. Thank you, Cardi,” continued, New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks.
Cultural icon Tupac Shakur was then taken to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada hospital after being shot several times in a drive-by on a Las Vegas strip on September 7, 1996, and was under a medically induced coma for six days before dying from internal bleeding on September 13, 1996.
After several failed attempts by doctors to revive 2Pac, his mother Afeni Shakur requested for his life support machine to be turned off. What were the events that transpired the days before the September 7th shooting that caused his early demise and why has the mystery of his death never been solved? These are the questions that remain 19 years later. Chris Carroll, a retired Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department sergeant, told Vegas Seven Magazine in an interview last year that we may never know;
“Shakur’s murder is still considered an unsolved homicide and an unsolved homicide case is technically never closed. But nothing more is ever going to happen with it.”
After all the documentaries that have been put out pertaining to Pac’s death, most fans attempt to put the clues together and create their own hypothesis yet without hard evidence it’s still just an educated guess as to what really happened the night of September 7, 1996.
The only real evidence police have are the witness accounts from Outlaw member E.D.I Mean, who claimed to have seen all four men in the vehicle and Yaki Kadafi, who was involved in a scuffle with officers two days following the shooting after they pulled over a driver he was with and he protested. Officers did not try to locate Kadafi, who was later gunned down in Irving, NJ two months after the shooting.
Compton investigators assembled mug shots of several gang members, which included Orlando Anderson, the Crip that Tupac attacked in the MGM Grand lobby hours before the shooting. Anderson is the suspect said to have fired the fatal shots that killed Pac. Las Vegas police later discounted Anderson as a suspect and interviewed him only once. He was later killed in an unrelated gang shooting.
‘Pac’s killer has yet to be found or even suspected, but the fight to bring his killer(s) to justice is continual and highly publicized, which will hopefully bring the truth about his untimely death to light.
